Week 6[19-25.11.18] CIMON

In a lot of movies we can notice AI which helps the researcher/astronaut to control spaceship or explore endless space.

For example in Interstellar there is TARS which is U.S. Marine Corps tactical robot. It is one of the crew members. This robot is programmed to talk with astronauts during the journey. TARS is very suited companion because it can act sarcastic and humorous also it can help operate spaceship or go out with members to explore new planets.

You can wonder why I'm talking about it. By Airbus, in cooperation with IBM in 29 July a small robot with artificial intelligence (AI) was send to the International Space Station.

CIMON short for “Crew Interactive Mobile Companion ” is a new tool for astronaut in ISS which in the future will help members with many things. Robot is made up of plastic and metal, created using 3D printing and it weight something like 5 kg. Software is run on Linux Ubuntu. It look like football with small display and few speakers, CIMON is equipped with animated face to facilitate conversation. By facial recognition software robot know whom it’s talking to. The robot is able to fly around, by sucking air and blow it through by special tubes. For now robot can show astronauts the content of routine procedure or possible alert about abnormal situation on board. It can cares about the mental condition of the crew by for example offer crew member to play with Rubik’c cube, but most of all it will always learn about everything and by this it can propose solution to specific problem faced by the ISS crew.

Crew member of the ISS crew could say something like, 'CIMON, could you please help me perform a certain experiment? Could you please help me with the procedure?' after this CIMON will fly towards the member and start communicate.

After this test which was placed on June, AI is very useful in space using a quote:

"Having AI — having that knowledge base and the ability to tap into it in a way that's useful for the task that you're doing — is really critical for having humans further and further away from the planet," Kirk Shireman, NASA's International Space Station (ISS) program manager, said during a prelaunch news conference(June 28).

Thinking about future, we can imagine a lot of new possibilities. For example machines will repair damaged spacecraft system, treat sick crewmember or go out on the surface of the planet to help build new base on the Mars. There is new possibilities coming out from this small idea which will grow up very fast in my perspective.

Questions:

  • What do you think? Will we have such a thing like TARS from Interstellar?
  • Could you work side by side with the robot?
  • What do you thing about AI and connected it with robot? It can be beginning of the end of mankind?

Using: AIRBUS

Comments

Actually just a small AI program with some knowledge will not likely pose a threat to humanity, since it is a mere assistant, which is not involved in any action directly. Moreover, personally I for some reason have an uncanny valley against that face...

Consider something more: an android that imitates human in everything. Scared? Or exited? Try answering those questions for yourself:
1. Would you consider having a relationship with an android that looks like a human?
2. Would you let an android take care of your children?
3. If you needed emergency surgery, would you agree to be operated on by a machine?

I think robots will be useful. I don't know how much they will be developed and if we will be able to work with them. In a sense we are doing it know, but we have to control everything. I don't have anything against using more complex tools when working.

I am more inclined to say that there won't be any end of mankind caused by AI.
1) What do you think? Will we have such a thing like TARS from Interstellar?
I think that yes, but it will take a lot of time

2) Could you work side by side with the robot?
Yes, it might be interesting :)

3) What do you thing about AI and connected it with robot? It can be beginning of the end of mankind?
It will be a new era, but I don't think it will be beginning of the end - I think that we will develop a lot

1. Yes, everything is possible. However, only time will tell if we get to this.

2. Of course, why not? But I am not sure that I could work with it for a long time since I do not consider the robot a full-fledged replacement for a person, and live communication is always better than a robot.

3. Artificial intelligence is gaining popularity and is able to help in everyday affairs, so I think that connecting it with a robot is a good idea. No, this is not the beginning of the end - it is just a new step into the future.

I think we can have something like TARS in the Interstellar.
Yes, I can work with a robot. In my opinion, robots work in many ways better and more accurately than human beings, they share the feeling of doing their jobs, and only do their defined tasks. If this is an artificial intelligence robot, his capabilities and solutions, and his faster access to information, can also improve the quality of work.
In my opinion, no, this can not be the beginning of the end of humanity.

Everything is possible. Maybe it will not be the way it is today. Rather, I see the use of robots as tools for work, not collaborators.

I do not think robots will end humanity. Soon people will finish themselves.

In the subject of AI and coexistence of people and machines, I recommend a movie
"HER".

Well probably in long distance future we will have a ai robot companion. Maby it will look like tars from interstellar but I hope it will be more human-like from the outside.
Working with a robot might be easier than working with a human. Robots don't complain, they are not lazy. It might be a great companion to work with.
In case of human ai relations I have to agree with Krzysztof. Movie HER is worth watching.

I think it's possible.

Yes, why not. I don't have any objection to be working with the robots. However, I believe the communication between 2 humans will be better than human and robot.

This subject was discussed many times. We need to be very careful when developing AI.
I think it’s very good idea to create such AI, it could help to solve some problems and could help people in critical situations. To my mind, with time it will created, because people already lead a lot of research in this area. If we are talking about robot like TARS then definitely yes, because he has different levels of sarcasm and humor and you can change these levels. While these robots will be under control, people should program some rules which they can't break in this case all will be okay. But there's always a chance something might go wrong.
I think that robots with advanced AI like TARS are only matter of time. Even if current progress in machine learning will slow down one day, people will finally overcome every obstacles.
I would love to work side by side with robot or advanced AI. Such machines would be great to help people with complicated tasks and it would speed up technology development even more. In addition robots could assist humans in many more areas. In my opinion it would be great to develop machines which would be able to perform all this “mindless” everyday human activities. This would allow us to concentrate on activities in which people are especially good.
I think that connecting AI with robot is necessary to truly make us of AI. In fact robot without AI is just simple automate, which can do only preprogrammed things. What is more, I think that we are safe from “robotic apocalypse” until we develop true AI. Current intelligent machines are in fact computational intelligence, which can just perfectly simulate certain behaviours and perform tasks which were impossible for normal algorithms. I think, that when we finally create thinking machines we would be able to cooperate with them to create better world.

Robot-helper with AI is good idea. Yes, I think that future we’ll have robots such as TARS.
I don’t think that I really need robot for my work. It can be voice assistant with AI and UI that will answer my question instantly(if I forget something), write notes and will help to visualize some idea. I’m programmer and therefore I don’t need robot with “arms and legs” to help me, I can write code myself.
Connect AI with robot good idea but creators should make some restrictions for robots(for example “DON’T KILL PEOPLE”). As far as I know those rules are already created by Isaac Asimov, mankind should remember this rules.

1. Yes, I believe that in the future we will have our own TARS. Unfortunately, it will take some time before that happens, but at least, considering current development of AI, we are going in the right direction.

2. Of course! There's nothing cooler than having a robot sidekick! Besides, I imagine that working with a robot would be more productive and even quite relaxing.

3. Not necessarily. Considering how on guard we are in this matter I doubt that connecting AI with a machine will cause the end of mankind.

I do think that at some point in the future, a thing like TARS will be created - however, I also think that that point will not come for several years, as creating such a thing is significantly beyond our current capabilities. I think I would be able to work side by side with a robot, though of course there is no way to really know without really trying. I don't see any reason that would stop me from doing so, though.
As for whether AI could result in an end of mankind, I don't know. We simply don't know enough to determine that. It's possible that it would result in the end of mankind, it could also result in a new age of mankind as well. It could also be the beginning of an era of transhumanism - there's no way for us to know.

I haven't watched the movie, but I think it's possible. From what you wrote I understand that there is already something similar to this, so I guess that wouldn't be a big problem.
The description of CIMON appeared to me that this robot could be really useful, so I think that it wouldn't be a problem for me to work with it. It's a pity that such robots aren't used in our everyday life, but only in space. ;)
I believe that it's not the beggining of the end of the mankind, from what we can see this kind of robots are rather intended to help people not to replace them, so I don't see any threat for mankind in developing them.
I think having robots like TARS form Interstellar during space travellings is just a matter of time. We already made similar robots as you mentioned before but let's look closer. In our smartphones we have Google Assistant or Siri which are AI's. Of course Google Assistant is not as smart as TARS but still it is AI that can controll almost every phone function so i think that more advanced AI's are just a matter of time. I think that working side by side with a robot is not a problem as long as it's not my partner just tool to a work. About AI in a robot I think that as long as it has no consciousness about it's own existance it's not a problem. The problem begins when machines starts to be self aware of their beeing and starts to think on their own. When human stops to be creator just a obsticle to robot's well being.

I think it's certain and I think we're close by. I've always been a fan of Iron Man, where Tony Stark, the main character, had Jarvis software and since 2008 I've always dreamt of such cooperation. I think robots can be our end, but in the end it's the machines so it's up to us how we design them.

1. I think that now we can't stop electronic development and in the next few years we will be able to use similar thing to TARS or even more complex solutions.
2. I think that for my job is it not possible to work side by side with the robot but on the other hand I use computer to programming and I use programs which helps me with programming so maybe I already work with the robot? It's hard to say but I think that robots will help people with hard physical jobs in the nearest future.
3. I don't think so because we will program it to make decisions only in limited area of knowledge.
I love Interstellar. It's amazing. I don't think that TARS is artificial intelligence, rather heavy-duty robot. Maybe soon we will learn to create such robots not only on the screens of movies. I believe that I could work side by side with the robot. After all, this is just a more advanced computer, and I spend 90 percent of my time on it. Working with a robot would be more convenient than with some people. Because with them I never forget that if you want it to be done well, do it yourself.
Yes and yes. Definitely, sooner or later, artificial intelligence will reach the point of development that wants to dominate humanity.
1. Yes, in my opinion sooner or later we will invent such companions. Maybe even in next 20 years?

2. Definitely. I would have to go through certain training or courses first but in the end I think I would be able to cooperate with a robot/AI.

3. It might be. Personally I think that AI should be more about advising humans when they make their decisions than acting itself. If AI gets advanced enough it can come up with ideas or decisions that humans won't be able to predict. That is why I don't think that connecting it to a robot is a good idea. It might pose a real threat to humans.

1. I think yes, but just as a coworker.
2. Maybe, but if we will have control for example immediate switch of button. And just if I go from home for just a few hours.
3. 3. Yes. For example we have robots which helps to surgery very small part of brain.
Unknown said…
I think so too. It will be a new era with new great technology.

Robots are better than people, unfortunately yes. I think because of that robots can get our jobs and there will be problem. Just like in last episode "Doctor Who".
Unknown said…
Thanks for remind me this movie, every time I forgot to watch it and a lot of friends recommended it. I also recommend "Ex Machina".
I hope so! Still not sure when we will create such advanced AI, but for sure it will be cool !
I would prefer to work side by side with a robot. The main reason is there won't be any personal prejudice. I won't be worried to rely on it. Even if something happens it would be probably my mistake in communication with the robot.
I'm ninety nine percent sure that it won't happen. And my first reason: "why it suppose to kill us?". Just because human kind destroying the planet ? In my opinion there are other methods of how to prevent people from damaging our planet without killing us.

Unknown said…
Ok, tomorrow I will watch it xd. In the movie "I, Robot" we can observe such a thing.
Unknown said…
Definitely there would be robots with AI in our lives. And I'm sure that it would be start of the end. I think that Isaac Asimov wrote good books about this subject but unfortunately it isn't a research work so people don't pay attention on the fact that they trying to make something that would totally replace them in the future. So I see only two ways of our future with robots: human race would disappear or we would become robot's slaves.

Yes just like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics and movie "I, Robot" talk a lot about it.
I think we are already on the way there – research on various robots and their applications is widespread, and I believe that we’ll see first conscious AIs within the next few decades. Putting the two things together doesn’t seem to be a thing outside of the realm of our possibilities. Even if the first AIs end up requiring significant processing power, by the time we are there we’ll surely have widespread fast networking to let them control robots wirelessly. Could I work with a robot? I don’t see a reason against it. I’d actually find it rather cool, getting to live in a world not unlike the one I’ve seen only in movies so far, where people and various machines work together to further their goals, rather than slay each other in pitiful war over who’s superior being. As I mentioned under Paweł’s post about AGI, I believe that emergence of complex, self-improving artificial intelligence will mean the end of our problems – either because it will solve them for us, or just remove us from the face of the earth. I much prefer to think it will be the former option.
Unknown said…
As I mention in comment above https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics this rules should be applied and every engineers/programmers should have it in mind.
Unknown said…
If we connect advance robot with AI and we don't restrict it, can be really bad. But maybe if we feed AI with good data it can be enough to not destroy the world.
I think it's great that companies have started to develop such AI robots. It's just matter of time, when we will have something similar to "TARS from Interstellar".
Obviously, I have never worked with the robot, but in some specific fields, most definitely they will be very useful. Personally, I would try to work side by side with the robot, because they don't have such a trait like laziness and as I know robots don't quarrel over personal relationships.
I want to believe that AI in combination with robots will bring humanity only happiness and make life easier for us. But sometimes, to be completely honest, bad thoughts come in my mind about future of mankind and I want AI to be regulated.
Unknown said…
Connecting AI with robot can be bad idea but depends on level of AI. It can be just robot which follows you and carry things or will be your guard with guns and advanced aimbot(second option can be risky xd).
Unknown said…
Since I watched "Iron Man" I dreamed about it and because of that I bought raspberry pi xd. Unfortunately i don't have time to make next Jarvis.

What do you think? Will we have such a thing like TARS from Interstellar?
I hope so, but there is a lot of work in front of us to achieve that.

Could you work side by side with the robot?
As a developer I working with a machines more than with live people, and if machine could assist me, tell a joke, or warn, it would be great.

What do you thing about AI and connected it with robot? It can be beginning of the end of mankind?
I think that there a lot of work should be made before robots become such inteligent, from my perspective it can take more than a century. But I think robots and people will live in harmony.
Unknown said…
What do you think? Will we have such a thing like TARS from Interstellar?

Not in near future i guess because TARS was a really advanced AI, but it's possible in my opinion.

Could you work side by side with the robot?

Maybe for some time... and of course not only an robot. I think that this kind of solution is better than beaing alone, but nothing can replace a human being.

What do you thing about AI and connected it with robot? It can be beginning of the end of mankind?
It's hard to say, but in my opionion at the begining it may be very usefull. Having an advanced AI can make many thing easier and solve problems. On the other hand we don't really know how will it develop.

I dont thing we will ever get so far as we have in movies. besides we want to control everything there is no way that Ai will be able to go rampage on its own, especially an advanced one. I would have no problem having a "AI coworker" that complements my disabilities and weaknesses so the work can be done more efficiently.
AI connected to a robot is not more than a hamster in a closed out garden it has a lot of "space"but not much to go from there.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...

Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] This is what happens when you reply to spam email.

James Veitch is a British comedian. In today’s Ted Talk James with characteristic for himself a sense of humor shows how he deals with spam emails and why responding to junk messages may be sometimes dangerous. Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam? How do you deal with with it?
