Week 6 [19-25.11.18] The impossibility of intelligence explosion

When working in the field of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence is definitely considered on cutting edge. We are working on Machine Learning – how to make our computers learn things by observing the world around and by finding patterns in data. Just like we do. But to the outside observer, this sounds almost like magic. Like we’re trying to free a genie from its bottle. It could either push as to new miraculous advances or it might just destroy us.

One of the ideas often discussed in the popular science press is the possibility of an intelligence explosion, a singularity. A point at which we are unable to predict what will come after because all the rules will change. An intelligence explosion assumes that at some point we will invent an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) which will be as smart as we are. At this point, some conclude, this AGI will be able to create a bit better version of itself – because it’s something we could do as well. Once it’s a bit better, it will be able to do the same over and over again – each time building a new version that is faster and better and “more intelligent” than we are. But what’s next? What will such a super intelligent being think about us? Will it be our friend? Or maybe our enemy?

Will AI replace humans?
François Chollet, creator of Keras Deep Learning library for Python and author of “The impossibility of intelligence explosion” article thinks this is just another myth that people who don’t really know the topic try to propagate. There are multiple problems with the idea of singularity.

Firstly, there is nothing like “general intelligence”. Actually, psychologists can’t even agree what intelligence is. We have some ideas and some definitions, but they don’t really cover all the cases we observe in the real world. Intelligence is considered to be “general problem-solving skill”. But we don’t really understand how it works. If we make “it” think faster, will it actually be more intelligent? Or “more intelligence” actually needs to change the quality of thinking? This is something that contradicts the idea of “slightly better AGI”.

Also, our intelligence seems to be connected with our culture. Or even wider – with the environment. We don’t really know how much of the intelligence is connected to the way we teach our kids. If a genius kid is suddenly lost in the jungle and parented by wolves (like in Jungle Book),  will it still be a genius? Will it be able to invent new technologies and ideas?

Our intelligence is partially coded in our civilization. In a way, it’s constantly improving, constantly reinventing itself. Yet it’s not really exploding. The complexity of our civilization is growing as fast as it’s capabilities. The same we can observe with our computers. Moore’s law says every 18 months our processors double their processing power. But is it’s exploding? Not really, because the tasks they are facing are also increasing in complexity. Exponential progress, meet exponential friction.

In conclusion, we are not really in danger of a Singularity. There will be no Intelligence Explosion on earth. We will observe the growth, which is good news, but we shouldn’t fear to become irrelevant overnight. That’s just a myth of “intelligence explosion”.
Questions:
1.    Are you aware how many AI products are you already using?
2.    Do you think we’ll see AGI in our lifetime?
3.    Are you afraid we’ll be made irrelevant once AI will be used everywhere around us?

Comments

Actually, I am pretty impressed that the exponential concept was mentioned in this article -- it is not that well-known fact. But it is true: all of nature's processes is running strictly according to the exponential law. Even the simple sunset, the temperature and the amount of light changes according to that single number. So does the progress. Personally I see nothing bad in singularity. Yes, I assume that it is totally possible, but try to see it like a new stage of evolution. By the way, actually turning into robotic lifeforms is better for human, since planet Earth is slowly collapsing, and getting rid of need in oxygen and nutrition might actually come in handy as the oceans rise and the biomes are vanishing one by one. Time to move on from this obsolete organic matter.

For sure I’m not aware how many AI products I’m using and I think that I wouldn’t like to find out because AI sound a little bit scary. When I hear it, I think about robots replacing people not only in workplaces but in relations and it’s horrible.
I believe that technology is growing very fast but to be honest I think that we won’t be able to see AGI in our lifetime. Also I can say that I’d be very happy not to see it :D
As I’ve said, I think that I’m afraid about it because nowadays even some real people become irrelevant for others. So…

To be honest I don't know how many AI products Im using right now but I think it's a lot. As I was thinking about it for a while I came to a conclusion that almost every app is using some sort of AI or framework that uses AI. It's really popular nowadays.

When it comes to new technology is still expanding drasticly but I don't think we will see AGI in our lifetime. I guess after it will be ready it will be still tested many times before releasing so it will take many years to see.

I think it is possible to human kind to become irrelevant. Nowadays a lot of working places are closed because humans were swapped to some machine with artificial intelligence. I think it will take some time but I guess we will become irrelevant.

I may only estimate how many AI products I already use but I wouldn’t dare do it. Actually this number is pretty huge and it’s scary. Few years ago AI sounded for me like something very complicated and extraordinary but now when I got a little bit more familiar with it I realize its potential and how it could affect our lives in future. People use AI for different purposes: some want to create self-driving cars and automate everything that is automatable and some want to use it to predict which kind of advertisement to show you.

2. Do you think we’ll see AGI in our lifetime? I hope so because it will be definitely new page in our lives. To my mind it may bring big changes to our world.

3.    Are you afraid we’ll be made irrelevant once AI will be used everywhere around us? I don’t believe in all those myths that robots will replace humans and etc but I do strongly believe that most of the manual work will be done by robots.
Yeap, we use more and more AI in our lives someone even don't know about it. A simple example is our gmail spam filter and smart gmail categorization. I think a lot of people even don't know about it. I think we will see AGI, and it could be after 15-20 years. I am not afraid, but I don't know what will be with us. Because almost everyone will be unemployed and for this reason some of people will start partisan war. Also, a human is biggest problem for our earth, because we kill nature and how AGI will relate for these actions it's very important question. AGI could think that we don't deserve to live.

A lot of things that we use over the course of the day are associated with AI. Perhaps the simple example is an iPhone or Android phone assistant.
In my opinion, human abilities are as high as AI. The human brain has many abilities and capabilities that have not yet been discovered. Information and knowledge are expanding in the world and there is still a great way to learn everything.
Artificial Intelligence is written by humans, before you can define in the program code the rules that artificial intelligence is only available to humans.
The real example is the use of artificial intelligence in China to give citizens a rating that is more like a nightmare.

I believe that we still use a few products AI because all of these products are very expensive. What I use in everyday life - often personal assistants for various platforms (iOS, Android, and Windows). And...I guess that's it, really wanted to see how the AI drives in the future would like to purchase the robot. I think not so that this intelligence existed, it should take more than one generation of robots. I'm afraid that robots perform different kind of work do not require as a payment of money. Therefore, it is logical that the money will be given to those who own the robots. Since the money overshadows the mind starts to worry about people who will remain in the end without work and money.

Sure AI is used in many ways, the simplest is Siri in iPhone or self-driving cars. Will it be smarter then we are? Well, 30 years ago there was no computers and now almost everyone has it. So it will not be a surprise if AGI came in our lives in 30 years and yes we definitely could catch it. But actually I am not sure that people could be irrelevant. There is no, wich i know, ways to recreate people feelings and consciousness. Maybe math can rule the world but it's hard to create algorithm wich could calculate the difference between fine line between similar feelings.
More and more products that are our dailes are having a support of AI so for sure i lost a track. When it comes to AGI i think it is still long way. Look at what cameras with AI are doing with strange bugs and glitches. Also every captcha or those strange pictures that even i have problem to read. And im not afraid about beeing irrelevant as i dont think it will happen in my lifetime.
I'n not hundred percent sure about the number of AI product which I'm currently using but I can assume that each product of any advanced company which includes a task of classification, (face/voice) recognition or sometimes even prediction (e.g prediction of the next word based on what already has been typed) all of them has AI functionality. Even google translate is based on AI which is extremely exciting topic.

It's difficult to answer the question will we ever see AGI in our life time just because we still don't have the precise definition of intelligence in AI terms. Although I guess that will witness something mind blowing in the next 10 - 20 years.

Certainly not, there should be some one alive in order to controls those AI systems. I mean there still will be positions which require creativity e.g science, art.

1. Of course it is hard to be aware of all products around us, that use artificial intelligence under the hood. We can say that every device with Internet connection nowadays already use AI directly or indirectly.
2. I think we will see some form of AGI in next few years as it is one of the fastest-growing area in science and technology area. Every tech company or major university is investing lots of money in research & development of AI so it will inevitably lead to AGI to be created.
3. In my opinion that is not going to happen because there will be still areas where it would be difficult to replace humans, e.g.: creating artworks, managing people, expressing emotions. Additionally, I think that authorities and designers of AI-driven solutions will consider implementing some kind of limitations in the self-improvement process of such a devices in order to prevent machines to get out of human’s control.

I guess that I'm not aware of all of them or I just don't think about them as AI products. For example something like recommendations on YouTube - they are for so long with us that they became an obvious thing and no one thinks about it as an AI product, but I believe there is some AI algorithm behind it.
I rather don't worry about becoming irrelevant due to Artificial Intelligence. As far as I work in IT, if my specialisation became automated, I would shift to another field of IT, maybe connected with tuning this AI or something like that.

I am not sure how many AI products i am currently using, but it is fascinating that the usage of these kind of a thing is almost everywhere nowadays. And it becomes even more exciting when i start to think, that even more are coming to actually help and make ours lives easier.

I think we will see the first AGI in next 30-40 years, and this one will change everything in this world, even probably will start a new era in human history.

I don't think that all the humans will be replaced, because there are still many options and jobs, which cannot be replaced . Humanity is making this for themselves, so its obvious, that some places will have to stay.

In fact, humanity uses a lot of products associated with artificial intelligence, most of us do not even think about it, including myself, I did not think about it before I read your article. Today, all technological innovations include components related to AI.
I think we will be the generation that will witness the introduction of AI in the daily life of the population of the planet.
Even today, many processes occur at the automatic level. And technology replaces people in production. This is on the one hand a negative phenomenon. But such human progress can be forgiven.
Thanks for the article. I have a very ambiguous attitude toward artificial intelligence. On the one hand, this is all amazing, development and new technologies. But on the other hand, I think it’s not for nothing that there are so many books and films about how robots rebel against humans. Because sooner or later it can happen. When machines will can without our help, self-reproduction. Since I am a designer, I am not afraid that I will be replaced by AI in the near future. My profession needs creativity and imagination. Artificial intelligence will take too long to develop these qualities.
I wouldn’t consider myself especially aware of how much AI lies in things I use daily, but I’m fairly sure it is already quite a lot, and growing with each passing day. Aside from the more… “tangible” AI that could be found in computer games, personal assistants and image upscaling software (have you seen that neural network trained to enlarge pictures of cartoons), I’m fairly sure there’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes in a lot of online services that I use. As to the AGI – I think we are already on a good road to see one emerge in the next few decades. It depends greatly on a lot of factors of course, and may still not be a solution to all of our problems. Do I fear artificial intelligence? I don’t really have a strong feeling one way or another. I believe that if we ever find ourselves in a world with an AGI, regardless of whether it decides to help our civilisation flourish, or finds us a waste of space and resources, we’ll have nothing more to worry about. Either because all our needs will be cared for from there on, or because we’ll get deleted from the face of the earth by a superior being that likely won’t be as easy to turn off as some of the Hollywood movies have us think.
I personaly hope if this super-intelligent AGI will decide to take care of us, it will still leave us some things to do and some challenges to meet. If all my needs are cared for, what will be left for me to do :)
Some people actually theorize those future AGIs will have the same kind of attitude towards humans as humans have towards animals. So we should change our attitude now - be more kind, don't abuse them and don't hurt them. So our future super-intelligent AGI rulers will adapt the same attitude to those of lower intellect :)
On the other hand, maybe because they will be more intelligent then us, they will be less prone to violance and abuse then we are. We can only hope.

1. Are you aware how many AI products are you already using?
I don't like term artificial intelligence, because at this point there are no intelligence. I prefer terms machine learning, and deep learning, because computers just calculate weights and possibilities. So I happy that computers now are better in predictions.

2. Do you think we’ll see AGI in our lifetime?
I think no, because switch from learn to how to play DOTA to real world learning is not a question of decade. From my perspective it will take about a century.

3. Are you afraid we’ll be made irrelevant once AI will be used everywhere around us?
I think people can concentrate on more important tasks and also can perform better with assistance of AI.

1. Are you aware how many AI products are you already using?
Propably I'm not aware of their number because they they shouldny be called intellegent for me.
2. Do you think we’ll see AGI in our lifetime?
I don't think this will happen in our lifetime. Hu mans are trying to invent someting as smart as we are but i'm not considered that it wil happen at all.
3. Are you afraid we’ll be made irrelevant once AI will be used everywhere around us?
I'm not afraid about me but maybe about other generations. Nowadays many people lose their job in favour of robots or some kinds of systems. They have many benefits from the point of view of the employer and something like AI will have even more.
Oh boy, we’re deep in sci-fi stuff in this article. Not that long ago I heard the following quote: „If it’s programmed in Python, it’s Machine Learning. If it’s programmed in a PowerPoint presentation, it’s Artificial Intelligence.” I find it both funny and deeply true at the same time.

In my opinion, we’re far away from AGI now, as is a possibility for machines to realize self-existence and start recursive self-improvements (a.k.a. the emerging of singularity). We’re very far away from that now. And I’m not afraid at all.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...

Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] This is what happens when you reply to spam email.

James Veitch is a British comedian. In today’s Ted Talk James with characteristic for himself a sense of humor shows how he deals with spam emails and why responding to junk messages may be sometimes dangerous. Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam? How do you deal with with it?
