Week 10 [04.06.2018-10.06.2018] A mini robot - powered by your phone

Keller Rinaudo, one of the computer geeks, wants to build a robot for everyone. Small robot and affordable price which everyone would like to have at home. It's called Romo, whose power is our phone. The robot uses a telephone camera to track our face. You can also manage the robot yourself and connect with it from a different part of the world.
I invite you to watch a short film.

Would you like to have this robot at home?
Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with  help of this robot?
Do you think such projects make sense?

Generally, I’m not very keen on such technologies at home. Of course, I do admire people inventing them and the growth in technology but as for now I’d rather like to see robots anywhere but my home. It’s hard for me to imagine playing hide and seek with help of this robot and I even don’t want to. Maybe in future. It’s also hard to determine whether such projects make sense but the most important is that inventing projects makes sense in general.
I'm not a fan of robots at all, but i would say rather "yes" than "no". I really appreciate helping hand at home. I can't imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot just because i don't like dishonest games. Every project makes sense. We need to fully understand that it is a future technology and we need to admire all the people who are spending their time for making our life easier.
A video robot is more of a toy and I do not know if I would like to have it at home. However, I have a cleaning robot at home and I think it was a great purchase. I do not have to vacuum anymore.
I think that hide-and-seek with such a robot is not even fun. Such a robot can be equipped with very advanced technologies that will not win. What's more, it's much smaller than a human, so it's easier to hide.
I'm more for the development of technologies that can in some way help human than produce next hig-tech toy.

No, why would I need it? Like it's really useless. I have pets, I have friends and family and I just simply dont need it. Well, I honestly dont know. Probably they made some researches on their target audience, but right now I dont think that this product will be successful

I think that it is obvious that robot like Romo has limited capabilities when it comes to performing useful tasks. In my opinion, such robots are not yet ready for everyday home usage. Maybe in few years, there will be some breakthrough in consumer robotics, but for now, we just need to entertain ourselves with what is available on the market right now. For me, this robot nothing more than a toy.
Pretty interesting concept but it's hard to imagine how this would be possible.
I find this project pretty interesting. Using smartphone as the brain of the robot is not a new concept but I can't remember any similar projects that used the same idea. Even if though project failed, it presented a very interesting approach that can be used in some future projects by other entrepreneurs in robotics.

I would like to have one of those robots in my home. I am sure that in the nearest future robotic industry will rapidly grow up and almost every family would be able to afford themselves useful robot that will help for example with house cleaning or other time consuming tasks or easier to say will make it easier to live. I think all new project make sense, because newer projekts, startups could use previous ones results, investigation to make new robots even more useful.

I'm recommend Roomba robot cleaner. It really works. My girlfriend's parents have robot similar to Roomba which cleans floors too but I can't say anything about it because I see it very rarely. I think that it isn't good.
Unknown said…
Yes, I agree with your opinion about admiring people who design and produced this king of gadget. The problem is that it makes most people lazy.
Unknown said…
My parents have 4 cats and have one Roomba robot on every floor. They still clean stairs, chairs and a lot of furniture. But if they didn't have Roomba robot they would die.

This video was made a few years ago and think what games you can play in future. Maybe in future we will be able to control it to leave it with your children or maybe grandma will be able to control it.
Unknown said…
I remember when they started selling Roomba , this technology was something amazing. But it was very expensive. Now you can buy it for about 1500 zl (basic version) but 10 years ago it cost more than 5k but I'm not sure how much

Would I like it have such robot at home? Not really, for me it's useless. I believe target audience is more for people with kids...
I can't imagine playing with such a robot my self but if I would have kids in the future I can imagine playing with my kid with similar technology if I for example couldn't be around for some reason.
This project never make sense by themselves nevertheless they sort of give public opportunity to imagine how useful it might be and popularize the technology in order to attract funding into the robotic development

As of now, I don't really see any usecases that would suit my needs, so I wouldn't buy such robot. Playing hide and seek could be possible if it had good image processing software prepared. I don't really think that creating such robots make a lot of sense right now. It's body would have to be much more complex than it is now.
I was thinking of an entirely different robot in the home. Usually, one that could do tasks in the House that have become most time-consuming. What I think of a robot is e.g. an autonomous vacuum cleaner. To me, the robot in the video is more of a gadget.

I think it's a pretty cool idea, but the current state of this project isn't quite satisfying, if you ask me. I wouldn't want to spend my money on that, because it would be much more fun to build something like that myself.
I don't think that this robot could really be capable of playing hide-and-seek, at least not for now. It's slow and it doesn't seem to be very agile. It might just be a fun thing for the kids to play with or to talk with the relatives that are away.
Such projects make sense, because each time that we try to make something new, we meet new obstacles on the way. It makes us only better at overcoming them in various ways as well as gives us an idea what area of computer science needs to be developed more before this projects could become as sophisticated as we want them to.

Would you like to have this robot at home?
Of coarse, I want a robot, but not this, because it 5 years old now, and didn't in production anymore. Also this robot don't solve real problems, and wasn't so popular. Also the firm that produced it, now is bankrupt. You can read about this here:
http://www.simplebotics.com/2016/02/the-rise-and-fall-of-robot-startup-romotive.html

Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
Now, this robot is useless because of his size and abilities. But I definitely could try to play with some boston dynamics robots.

Do you think such projects make sense?
I this so.

Sure, I love robots, We will have a lot of fun if its going to happen. We all are going to play hide and seek with the next generations of this which will want to conquer us. I can't say for sure, there are different projects that seem more important to me.
Every year more and more robots appear in our lives. This is the main meaning of development. Therefore, I would like to have such a robot, but maybe not now. In my opinion, many children will appreciate such a companion for games. Every project has a right to exist. Many great projects began with a small idea, which no one believed.
1) Would you like to have this robot at home?
Yes I find this robot interesting especially for kids. But I think that we have analog in intelligent speakers because all that usual human do with such types of devices is just telling commands what need to do.
2) Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
No, I'm too old for this ... But for kids this will be useful

3) Do you think such projects make sense?
I think that this project make no sense in real world and we can develop something more useful.

Would you like to have this robot at home?
No, because I don't have an Iphone.

Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
Maybe. But it would be much more useful if it would have more possibilities than just riding and tilting up and down.

Do you think such projects make sense?
A little. It may be a toy or a mobile camera for controlling small kids in homes when away from their room.

I generally try to avoid too much AI around me, cause I am a conspiracy theory freak, and I think that one day they can take over control . But seriously, I don't really feel like I need more technology around me. Less is the answer.

Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
I guess it would be fun. I think I would gladly play with such robot if it could be found on some fares in the city, and not necessarily bought and kept at home. It would be a nice one-time experience.

Do you think such projects make sense?
I think they do. It is only part of the further human development that we go deeper into robotics.
Not actually. I agree it’s fun but that’s all. I don’t see any purpose to buy and to have such robot at home. If I would like to throw my money away I wouldn’t definitely buy this robot :) In order to imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of the robot I should at first remember when was the last time I played hide-and-seek at all.

Maybe for someone it makes sense. I would say that it mostly make sense for developer to increase his skill and show everyone that he is able to do something like this. As for me it’s rather funny thing than something handy.

Would you like to have this robot at home?
I do not see any point to have it. For what? In my opinion this robot is useless.
Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
No, whats with stairs? I could count that. Maybe some day will be robots capable play hide and seek, and I hope that we will be playing with them, not them with us.
Do you think such projects make sense?
In long context yes, it could discover some problems and resolve them. But when to see short term in example to sell them then in my opinion no.

1. Would you like to have this robot at home?
I think that I do not need such a robot at home but I like gadgets so I could to try such solution because it looks interesting.

2. Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
No, not really. But a concept is not so stiupid but he has to improve this solution because for now I think that it is not very spectacular.

3. Do you think so projects make sense?
Yes, of course such projects make sense because technology development takes time ans such projects makes us closer to better solution, ideas, electronic devices.
Unknown said…
In general yes but I can't find any sensible use for Romo.
At this stage it's actually useless, hide and seek with grandma? Come on...
All kind of projects with robots are valueable because robots are becoming our helpers in daily routines for example vacuuming robots, smart friidges etc.

Maybe yes, but I think that it is a gadget It is not a "must have".

Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?

Yes, but it is not my kind of "fun"

Do you think such projects make sense?

Yes, but only for some kind of entertainment.
Unknown said…
Well, If it was a gift then why not. But I don't think I would spend my money on it.
I don't think at this moment it is really useful, but hey, every project/technology must fail first few times. In my opinion every similar project bring us closer to better and more technology advance solution.

I don't need a robot like this.

I prefer playing with someone alive.

I can't really think of any use for it except as a gadget or a toy.
Marcin Górski said…
Hmmm, I think that this robot can be unnecessary at my home. I don't think that I can exploit the potential of that device. About second question? I grew up with that game. I have spend a lot of time with my friends and I can't imagine playing with robot. Hide-and-seek? Only with my friends. In my opinion, every IT project has sense. I like new ideas and this one is something new for me. Video is very interesting and gadget looks great.

I would love to have this kind of robot at home. I am fan of new technologies and wanted to have my own robot since I first time saw R2-D2 in Star Wars.
I can imagine that, but I would play games like this with real people rather than robots. I prefer robots to have different kind of works in home.
I think that any project that develop in any way technology make sense.

It's not that kind of things that you must have, but I would like to try it. Why not.

Can you imagine playing hide-and-seek with help of this robot?
Oh, in this point of view it's could be good when I was little and used to play hide-and-seek.

Do you think such projects make sense?
Well, it is progress, so it is make sense.

I would not spend 150 dollars for such a toy but if someone buys it for child or for himself I truly understand because it looks like fun. Second reason why I would not buy it it is because it is not useful for me. If it could do something like going out with rubbish I would spend all my money to buy it. I guess I am little to old for playing hide and seek with a robot when I am alone at home but if I had a child I would play it. Such projects for sure make sense. It gives new ideas or solutions or ideas for other people making robots and it can help increasing amount and quality of new robots and if we have 150 free dollars to spend and a bored child it is a great opportunity to give a really good time to our child and us.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
