Week 7 [14.05-20.05.2018] Why cartoon characters wear gloves

Why cartoon characters wear gloves

It's always interesting to learn something new. Sometimes you should learn from your own mistakes, but if the answer already found, why not use it. This video hides the answer to the question, which sooner or later asked anyone who watched old cartoons. You can also see how various problems in classical animation were solved earlier, and how much time and effort was spent on creating them.

1.Have you ever wondered why many characters in old cartoons wear gloves?

2.Do you think that using gloves was the right decision?

3.Did you learn something new from this video?

I've never wondered why many characters in old cartoons wear gloves but it's really interesting question! After watching video it's almost obvious that it was the right decision. We can simply say that drawing hands is difficult (I know it from experience) and for cartoon companies it wasn't worth to spend so much time and money on little details. What's more, in my opinion, cartoons had their own soul because of exaggerating or mentioned lack of details like hands.

I’ve always thought about it as a style of characterization. A signature looks. When I was watching cartoons, characters with gloves were less common than ones without them. It’s certainly was news to me that part of the reason was practicality.
Using gloves made the characters look more iconic. Gave them an old school look that was associated with this particular set of Disney characters. However, if they weren’t there it wouldn’t impact the characters designs that much overall. And wouldn’t make much of a difference.

I usually don't have much attention and curiosity when it comes to such details so obviously, I've never asked myself this question.
As it was said in the video, gloves helped animators to simplify drawing of complicated scenes and made the whole animation process much easier and less time-consuming. So I think, it was a very clever choice to make.
For me, information presented in this video is nothing more than fun fact, but I enjoy watching videos like this.

I watched cartoons when I was very young, so when I was only a few years old I didn't think about such things, but now that I'm already an adult it makes sense to ask this question. I think these gloves are a very good decision and they have good reasons to use them.
The facts I saw in this film were really very informative, they showed me cartoons from a different perspective

It was very interesting for me to see this video. So far I have not been careful about this.
In my opinion, at that time and in accordance with the conditions and conditions that could exist, it would have been the best decision.
It's always been interesting to me to look at the points that may have been irrelevant to us in the past.

That's actually a very interesting topic. I was never sure why cartoon characters wear gloves. I guess I kind of thought that it just belongs to the style the artists decided to introduce, nothing more. This video shows there is actually more to it. I think using gloves was the right decision back at the time. The most appealing argument was that in black-and-white animations hands and feet were not properly visible if not for the gloves and shoes. The most interesting and surprising thing I've learned from this video was the vaudeville culture. I have not heard anything about it before and I have certainly not associated it with Mickey Mouse - interesting.

To be honest I've never wondered why many characters in old cartoons wear gloves. I think no one can imagine mickey mouse without them. In my opinion using gloves years ago was very good decision. It's very interesting way to clearly mark hands or feet in black and white animations.
I have never even thought about it but in my opinion this is one of the greatest solution for such a problem. I consider that this trick gives only positive effects. First of all it complements your character with an unique attribute which makes him unforgettable. Moreover it makes drawing this character much more easier.

As for me information in this video is just another example of how to simplify complex problem.

Yes, I've always wondered why cartoon characters wear gloves, now I know. I think the use of gloves was a good decision. In the black and white cartoons, there was probably not a better way to get their hands visible. Thanks to it, we don’t only see black uniform spot. Thanks to gloves, cartoons characters have an original style. Watching this video, I learned interesting things about the history of cartoon gloves.

Have you ever wondered why many characters in old cartoons wear gloves?
Actually I never noticed that, when I was a kid. After that I didn’t watch many cartoons.
Do you think that using gloves was the right decision?
I think yes. It is characteristic idea but it fit perfectly because many people as me never notice that.
Did you learn something new from this video?
Yes, that is more than one reason for wearing gloves by cartoon characters.

I have actually noticed that many characters wear gloves in cartoons, but there wasn't much thought process behind this. I think gloves were good decision as you can see on an example of Micky Mouse from 1929 that his hands and his actions are much more visible in comparison to Micky Mouse from 1927 and 1928. Of course I have learned about the reasons why so many cartoon characters wear gloves. Also it showed me how much a small change can help.
As someone who really lowes cartoons this question really bothered me for a long time, and i got my answer seeing this video a little bit earlier =). It was the best(or the first) decision that was made, that had no negative consequences, so i would say that it was a right decision. I learn a lot things when i first saw it, i really like cartoons and some new random facts about them always make me happy =3.

1.Have you ever wondered why many characters in old cartoons wear gloves?
No, I even didn't thought about them earlier. For me they were part of the character, especially some of them didn't wear any kind of shirts or jackets.

2.Do you think that using gloves was the right decision?
And who am I to judge it? I never thought about alternatives and I don't think I would come up with better one for black-and-white movies. And in my opinion they didn't got better idea than this.

3.Did you learn something new from this video?
In fact - everything. Never saw any scene from this video before and never thought about gloves for cartoon characters. And what's more - never thought about the answer for that question.

I have never wondered about that, until now. I became pretty curious about that, when I've seen the title of this presentation, though. I really like to be surprised by this type of question - the one that makes us wonder why we have never thought about that before.
I think that the gloves were a perfect decision. As a child I have obviously noticed them on some of my favourite characters, but have never wondered, why. As most of them were wearing gloves, it became pretty natural to not care about it. It makes a pretty good memory, too. Nowadays, when we see so many 3D characters, we can't really notice anything common about any single one of them. We may just be thankful of having an opportunity to see our childhood have some consistent and easy things to remember.
This video has taught me a lot, since I didn't know any of the reasons behind cartoon characters wearing the gloves. I don't really need that in my life, but I also don't consider it as a waste of time. It even made me smile a bit.

In fact I have never wondered about this until now. Watching the video you added was a really shocking experience, haha for so many years I didn’t notice that, it felt so natural. Now I don’t know how to answer second question, to me gloves used to be an integral part of many cartoons that I watched over the years, without them characters would have totally different personality. Yes I did learn something from this video, how many small, outstanding and mind-blowing curiosities there are in our world.

Hmmm, I have watched a lot of cartoons but but it's something new for me. I know about every character from your video but it's a first time when I have noticed that they are having gloves. Solution explained in that movie is good for me because it can be eye-friendly and as explained using hands for mouse character could be a abuse. Yes, of course I have learn about cartoons history, thank you for something new for me :)

I have never wondered why such characters wear gloves. What's more, I've never noticed that they wear gloves. Now, when I know the reason why they were wearing them, it is quite understandable for me.

It was a quite interesting presentation for me. It's funny how many details are hidden in such cartoons.

I have never bothered why they are wearing gloves, but after watching this video it explains a lot. I guess that was exactly right decision not to waste time on details in the cartoon. I have learned a lot from this video.
This is cool workaround to make accent on hands of person. I have never think about why they wear gloves in cartoons. Maybe because I don't look such types of cartoons now and in modern time animators has more ways to do their cartoons.

But I think this thing has made cartoons unique and different compare to current time.

I didn't think about it. But it is interesting. A lot of cartoon characters wear gloves.

I don't know. I don't care about this. I think nobody pays any attention to it. Perhaps the use of gloves was a good decision, but it is difficult to say a word about it.

Interesting movie about wearing gloves by cartoon characters.

I must admit that it never struck my mind why old cartoon characters wear gloves. Frankly, I had more things to wonder about, for example why some animal characters are personified while other aren't, or why animals speak English or have their own cities etc.
I think that using gloves was an ingenious idea. Artists are always constrained by the tools they are using so it takes creativity to overcome these circumstances and using gloves was a good solution.
The video was very interesting, I haven't learned about the history of animation before, so the presented information were new to me. It was also interesting to hear some words of Walt Disney from his book.

I have never wondered about this, I think I didn't pay attention to such detail and also the fact that almost every character wore them made not even wonder about it. But now I agree it's interesting and a bit weird. ;P However, I believe it was a good decision, because characters simply looked better with gloves. Also, due to this their hands were more visible and we could observe all characters' moves easily.

1. Have you ever wondered why many characters in old cartoons wear gloves?
Yea, I was always curious why cartoons characters wore items like gloves, hats, glasses and basically these part of clothes which cover detailed parts of human body.

2. Do you think that using gloves was the right decision?
Yes, I find simplifying cartoon characters a very good decision. It makes it easier and more pleasant to watch cartoons, as characters are easier to remember and kids don't have to focus on less important details.

3. Did you learn something new from this video?
I don't know whether I've learned something new, but I was amazed how many details are hidden in such cartoons.
Unknown said…
1. No, I never paid attention to it.
2. Yes, it took less time to draw the details of the body and the presence of the hands of the characters was better perceived by the children.
3. Yes, of course, it was very interesting, now with the cartoons everything is different, it's computer models and more realistic characters.

To be honest I've nevr noticed that every of the characters wear gloves. Maybe because they suit them perfectly, so of course it was good decision not to spend to much money on designing hands for every character, when you have opportunity to replace them by stylish gloves.
Of course we learn something from every presentation. This shows that even, unnoticeable at first glance, part of the dress is a solution of the big problem.
Well, i never really realised that but, if you think about it, feets and hands are the hardest parts to draw. Especially when it comes to antropomorhic animals like in mikey mouse. How do you imagine to draw it hands to look real! So comming to second question, i guess it was best idea they could come up with.
I totally agree with you. Thanks to these gloves, the cartoons of that time were in their charm. And the creators came up with a great way to make your work easier because it's very difficult to draw hands.
Yes, I agree. The lack of gloves would not change anything. But at the same time, it gives the recognition to the cartoons.
It's very appropriate that you liked my choice of a video. I'm also like watching these videos. They tell interesting information, entertain the viewer and you don't get tired.
I also learned a lot from watching this video. Mickey Mouse - the idol of the cartoon of that time, and I think that many will take him from him an example for a long time. This character has won the audience and will forever remain in our hearts.
A simple solution to a complex problem
is top of the line.. I love such simple solutions.
I'm very glad that you have already seen this video. It's nice to know that someone has similar interests. I love old cartoons much more modern. Perhaps this is because of the complexity of the product, their creators thought through the script and more carefully.
It never really bothered me, neither it proven to be of my interest to ask such question.
Although i suspected that they might have been solution to an non obvious problem in the industry, i never really investigated. My theory was simple "To give contrast" of where the arm ends and the hand starts in b&w films. As seen in video it solved another problem of having less to draw each frame (ofc depending on the gloves details) so simply to save time i would never suspect it was a way to reference / pay homage to Vaudeville performances.
I'm very glad that the video made you smile. I agree that it's very nice to know that the cartoons of our childhood are not just entertainment. This is a lot of hard work, of many people. So, I think those people, who think that cartoons are only for children, are deeply mistaken.

No, I didn't notice this before, it was unexpected for me at all. Smart and simple solution for artists to skip details.
Absolutely, It was a right decision, because who really cares?
- Only artists who have to draw it manually.
I did, and I will never forget it. Thanks for the interesting info)
I learned about the "face paint" thing on the actors at school. It was a part of Jim Crow of course. Jim Crow went on for many years dating back to almost the 17th century and ending around the 60s. Whites used to stereotype and rumor that African Americans were mischievous and that they were savages. This led to the whites making movies, merchandise, and tv shows trashing the reputations of all African Americans. That is why the faces are painted. The things white Americans did back then were such despicable actions.
Wow, what an interesting fact it is! I've never paid an attention to it. But what an amazing topic to discuss i would say. Thank you for that interesting story. After i've watched a video above, i can say the reason creators did it. But i didn't notice it until i watched the video.

1. No, but now I can think of a many of them. It's funny because when You have mentioned it, I've realised that actually a lot of them uses gloves.

2. Yes. Everything that can ease the production process is a good choice I think. For me it's not a big difference about it.

3. I know quite a lot about cartoons, so it was already known for me.

I've never think about it. But when i saw this heading I hought that is connected with focus us on hands.
After watch this film I think that's good idea. When people watch TV they want to relax so why they should think more than they can.
I rather don't learn nothing new but it is more ordered knowledge.
Unknown said…
Nope. I haven't even noticed it really! But after this video I see, that that definitely was the right decision! Those characters without gloves look confusing and a bit... too black for me.
Yep, it's interesting how people that shoot movies/cartoons or make games care how their creatures will look like for ordinary human and how they think about such small details, that normal human won't even notice!

The contrast on b&w cartoons, become much better with gloves, so it a brilliant idea in my humble opinion.

3.Did you learn something new from this video?
Yes, I never thought before about this topic, and I'm learned a lot of information from this video.

What’s more interesting - gloves became iconic in old school cartoons.
Isn’t that weird, that all the characters have 4 fingers?

before i watched this movie i have never thought about reason why cartoon characters are wearing gloves. it is really surprising because when i was a child and Disney cartoons were something like addiction to me , i have never even noticed it. while watching this film i perceive that gloves on mickey mouse hands aren't accidental.at one time creating cartoons weren't so easy as nowadays. creators like Walt Disney had to draw separately frames to make even a short cartoon. It took a lot of time so they thought about drawing gloves for their characters. thanks to this they didn't have to draw do many details. in my opinion this solution id really clever. I learned that work smart not hard .

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
