There are many major differences of growing up before and now. Starting with the difference that you're no longer allowed to go out and eat sand while playing in the playground, ending with the difference that technology is now all around and changed how children grow up. This is both the negative aspects, such as parents launching games and cartoons (often stupid ones) for their kids in order not to have to take care of them, and generally that the kids learn that every information they need is served on a silver platter, and the positive aspects, such as the easiness of accessing knowledge (when you actually want to get it), easiness of mastering technologies that in consequence makes it easier to actually making a change in this sector.

I have a hard time deciding when I'd like to be born. On one hand, life was much simpler and less stressful before, on the other hand, now is not a bad time to live either, but then again, we don't know what the future will look like, so it would be hard to decide. Good thing I cannot change it and don't have this dilemma :)

I think it's good, that there are young devs. They will get proficient with what they do very early on, and have the potential to make really great things in the future.

I think the main difference is how did we spent our free time and how children nowadays do it. We had a lot of friends, no smartphones and there was no problem to go out and find you friends. We were spending time outside almost all the day. Now children rather to talk to friends by chat and they spend all their time staring at their tablets or smartphones.
If I could choose I would like to live in 20ies or 50ies. I think it was a great time when woman were treated with respect, as ladies and so they were wearing. Now women can't behave themselves.

I'm very jealous about this guy because I always think what if I've started to learn programming earlier. And looking on him I understand that he has chance to have a good job even before he ends his study. What's more, he likes what he does. And that is the main goal, to do something what you like.

I would like to born past cuz really the best time. Where everyone plays on outside. Nobody knows what is the Dandy or another like that game console.
I think about young developers, that they will have a lot of money and popularity. But a child should be enjoying your childhood and not be adults in childhood cuz when he will be adults then he will have a problem with communication with another people.
I think that in 90's children were the last generation of those who grow up in a "retro" way. It was a totally normal to eat a ton of sugar, none had a problem with gluten and we had a lot of ways to spend free time - and it was different things than computer games or surfing internet. On the other hand it is cool that kids nowadays can learn how to code when they are 10, when I was younger it was almost impossible for polish child to learn code if he/she hadn't know someone who code.
I really loved my childhood, so I would not change anything.
When someone do it for passion it's ok. I do not like rat race so it's nothing wrong with it if you start coding after your 20's or even 30's. I think that despite computers kids should have some other passions.

Oh, what a wonderful kid in the video. But, in my opinion, he is so smart and industrious not because of the time he was born, but because of his parents and the way they raised him. Yes, maybe it's easier now to learn Computer Science. And not only that but many other things, you can just google some courses and even do it online, you can learn something new being at home and not going anywhere. But not everyone does it, don't you agree with that?

1. Maybe, possibilities. As I wrote, there are many courses now on the Internet. And also life has become faster, you always need to do something. Kids do so many things now, learn a lot, read a lot of information on the Internet. I'd say that life has become easier. You can get any information you want in less than 1 minute. That's cool.
2. I'd like to try to be born in the present. Just to see the difference. But it doesn't mean I'm not glad about the time I was born.
3. I don't know a lot about young developers. But I don't think they do something significant. They do funny apps, yes, but not apps for big companies. Although they just have fun, that's cool that they learn something like programming at such a young age. Hope they will be successful n the future.

P.S. Thank you for the interesting topic and video.

I totally agree with you! I should start programming earlier. When I had 12 years old I was dreaming about smartphone...
At 12 years old he was developing apps.
Unknown said…
I agree with you. Of course now its easier to learn something because of internet and online courses, only one thing you have to do is be willing to learn.

I think that there is no way to say directly what is the major difference. In my opinion the biggest factor that makes changes in our lives is technology. It's responsible for almost evertyhing in our life and it often affects our lifestyles as well as parenting styles. It's usual that we often want to have the newest technology and we alos deliver it tou our children. They grow up in this environment and also the way technology is growing and world is changing affects people's life approach and priorities.

There are probably many interesting differences between growing up in these two generations. However, relating your question to the presented video, I would say that the exposure to mobile phones is the most obvious difference. Researchers claim that as a result of constant usage of mobiles and being bombarded with a highly reactive and massive amount of information, modern children's cognitive development has shown some differences. This is a hot research area in modern interdisciplinary psychological and CS studies.

I grew up in the 80s/90s and we were already exposed to technology at a young age. It was not as widespread and not as advanced as today, but my friends and I spent a good portion of our childhood playing with PCs. Some of my friends coded already as kids and young teenagers. It was time when it was "cool" to be a hacker or phreaker and young hackers were already in the mainstream consciousness thanks to being portrayed in the idiotic Hollywood movies. Let's not forget that even the previous generations; the generation of Linus Torvalds, and earlier generation of Steve Woz (Apple's co-founder), had young teenagers who were fantastic coders (even before the Internet!). True, they did not have slick mobile phones, but there were exceptionally talented kids and teenagers who were technological wiz kids even back then.

What do I think about young developers? if this is what they love doing, go for it, young devs! Good luck! :)

I think that childrens nowadays are not very different than childrens at 90's. Of course now we have more electronical devices and we have access to them in younger age than people some years ago but I don't believe in a statement that everything was changed and now kinds only play on a computer or xbox.

In my opinion it is good that we have more developers and childrens also are sometimes interested about it. We will need more and more progammers so it is good phenomenon.

1. First and foremost is the impact that technology has on kids now compared to impact it had in 90’s. In 90’s kids usually spent their time after school playing outside e.g.: playing football, skateboarding, rollerblading, riding a bike etc. They had social life based mainly on outside activities. Of course it was the time when computers and computer games were already present, however I think they didn’t have so much influence on them. Today’s kids live in a connected world as we all do. They are using social media, watching videos and playing games online. I think there is also a trend of preferring this kind entertainment over physical activities.
2. It is quite hard to answer such a question. For sure, being born would have many advantages like access to better education system and technical development but also drawbacks which I’ve mentioned above.
3. 3. What do you think about young developers?
I think it is very optimistic trend that kids can not only play games and use modern technology for entertainment but also they are trying to create ones. Young developers lack experience and they don’t follow good practices but they are very creative, can quickly develop simple solutions and they often have an ability of an out of the box thinking.

I think that the biggest difference is technology. When I was young I was spending my free time outside with my friends. I was leaving my home at the morning and coming back in the evening. I think that my growing up time was the best :)
Nowadays, every kid has his own computer and that's everything. They are playing computer games and it's everything. Seriously, look at youtube.. there are about 5-6k people on live streams everyday! It's easier to talk by Skype than real communication for them.
There are some advantages about born at present. This child from video is the best example. He can start programming earlier than me and best when he will be at my age but... I would like to born in the past because I have a lot of memories from that time. I hope that my child childhood will me similar to my :)
What do I think about young developers? It's not a problem for me. If they want to be developers.. why not? I wish them all the best.
1. Everybody can see the difference shown in the kids’ environment, I mean the technology. But I’d like to write about something else. In my opinion children are more sensitive and clever now, they act with huge intuition, I observe they become quite early ready to talk to them about serious issues. I keep on thinking how it is possible and apart from the civilization changes I can see social ones, which have provoked that. I mean people are more conscious of the psychologic processes in their life, meet with their coaches, mentors, develop their minds. Kids observe all of that, and follow the adults, learning faster and deeper. For me this is the essence of difference in growing up in 90’s and now.
2. If I could choose, I wouldn’t change anything. First of all I like the way I came through until today, all the difficult experiences gave mi a lot of inspirations and self-development in fact. Apart from that, I am not sure, where the human race is going, what is the future. Let’s leave it to the younger generation. Maybe they are better prepared (see my answer above) just for this reason.
3. I admire such kids. On the other hand I have mixed feelings, because there is a lot of dangers concerning their further life. He can be bored very fast with the successes they’ve participated and with the money they’ve earned. There are two options possible to happen – they can be messed or they can look for life’s sense in very early age. Let’s hope I am wrong.

1.Technologies around us, easier access to information, the whole world is closer to you than it has ever been, you name it. Between generation of 90's and generation of 2000's the difference is bigger than between any other generation, and it is all because of fast evolution of technologies.

2. I like my time. I don't really want to change something. Besides, there is no perfect time period in the whole history of our world (maybe one without humanity in the distant past was good, tho).

3. It is like with foreign languages. The younger you are, the easier it is to you to learn one. It is our future. We really should teach kids to use all modern technologies as a tool to interact or even change our world and society.

Well that's the thing. Today its easier to find anything for young programmers, but rest of kids are playing computer games instead of spending time outside.

The difference between people growing up in the 90's and now is really huge. Kids from the present times happen to have much more opportunities to learn and find all necessary information, thanks to cheap and easy access to the internet. In the 90's finding some of the information has been a real struggle.
If I could choose between living in the past or in the present, I would just keep things the way they are now. I wouldn't want to live in the past, as that would change most of the things in my life in a pretty weird way. I don't think that I could adjust to the reality of these times after knowing how life looks like now, int the present.
I think it's pretty amazing that such young people put so much effort into becoming so good at something so useful. It is a known fact that the younger you are when you start doing something, the easier it is to get a grip of something. I personally admire them.
I believe these new kids already know much more than we did in our age. But at the same time, they are in a way spoilt with the absence of the ability to discover something. They have all the tools to get the work done, and there is no need to invent. Unlike what is shown in the video, I believe there will be less inventions in the future. Still, I would prefer to be born when I was born and not now.

What is the major difference between growing up at 90’s and nowadays?
I think the biggest difference is the internet and electronics. Now days internet is everywhere and is faster than w have in 90’s. Also electronics is more accessible for kids because of its price. The internet resources are bigger too, and everybody can find what they need.
If you could choose - when would you like to born, at present or in the past?
Looking through the prism of my career maybe today, but still I would have to learn what I learn or even more because when I would graduate the base of knowledge would be bigger. Assuming I think the 90’s was just the best. Also more kids then ware playing outside.
What do you think about young developers?
I keep my fingers crossed for them.
Unknown said…
There will be always something to discover. I think its better to have all tools because we are inventing new things and we need them to move forward. Passed knowledge is very important.
Unknown said…
Maybe you are right, but if you are young programmer you don't have to spend all day with computer. I think that you can reconcile your learning and having fun with others.

Nowadays kids have much more technology to use, which improves level of their lives. But it has drawbacks. Such kids have to learn to use new technologies wisely. It could be dangerous for them. They can develop new friendships, but also they can be objects of hatred. I would like to be born in the past. Life was much more simplier. There were less things that could be stolen or damaged. Nowadays you have to worry about your car, your telephone, your TV, what is actually going on in world.
Free time is a main difference. When I was a kid we used to play outside, and we were going back to home only when newest dragon ball episode was airing, now children are far less social, with their noses in smartphones, tablets and all sort of technology, and just finding out teens playing football out of their own is pretty rare nowadays.

I can't say whether it's actually good or bad. I feel like children lack some kind of "guardian" now that would tell them how to use the technology they have access to - parents have less and less time for their own children, resulting in them finding out what is best for them on their own, becoming lazy and without any ambitious goal, because they have nothing to really strive for.
Unknown said…
The biggest difference is that kids nowadays grow up with computers, tablets, smartphones in front of their faces. In 90's kids were playing outside and were moving much more.
If I could have chosen when to be born, I wouldn't have changed anything.
As long as young developers like what they do I wish them all the best. However if it's forced by their parents to do what can be profitable in the future and the kids hate it than it's a different story.

it's needless to say that the difference is HUGE. when I was a child I played SEGA games but nowadays children can create Iphone apps themselves and play them. It depends on the environment which surrounds us. contemporary world gives much more opportunities than we had 20 years ago.
Despite the fact I am a computer programmer I would like to born in 90s as I did.
I reckon it's a great thing because the world we're living in requires sucg young developers..they're just like Mozart several centuries ago, but their talent is completely different
The biggest difference between growing up in 90's and now is probably that back then the air was much cleaner and water was less polluted. There were less brainless stuff thrown our way all the time, kids were meeting face to face and not talking through facebook and imagination was used more widely. If I had to chose I would definitely prefer to be born in the past, mostly because while having less you paradoxically had more. People like to think that technology is all we need and people must have been really bored back in the days. Really? Ask your parents or grandparents, I bet they had a lot of fun without TV and Internet. Nowadays everything is at hand and you don't have to do anything to spoil your neurons. Not having to work for fun reduces the quality of it. Regarding the last question there is nothing wrong with young developers as long as they really have fun doing and they are not forced to do it by their parents.

I see a lot of benefits and disadvantages of upbringing in the 90's and now. I have a younger sister and I see how her life differs from mine when I was her age. I see that she has more skills and certainly more developed social life. Even when it comes to profession and your future, she knows what she wants to do. At her age I wanted to be a singer or a princess. However, I do not know if I would like to change it. I feel good about where I am now and with my childhood memories. And when I listen to children like in video.... On the one hand, I admire them very much because I see that they can do a lot and maybe I will never be able to do so much. However, on the other hand, I think that they have no childhood and that they could spend time more carefree. And for a moment, be a knight or a princess... like i was ;D

In my opinion growing up nowadays makes it easier for children to learn. I do not say that learning was difficult at 90s, it is just now youth can learn anything they want in every possible way. You can sign up for the course, watch tutorials, read articles on the internet or find a book about it. In 21st century people are eager to share their knowledge with everybody who is interested.
If I had a choice when I would like to be born, I would say at present. I like how fast everything is developing- technology, medicine, business etc. Word is full of opportunities and things to discover, and people are ready to help you if you need it. All you have to do is to make a first step, then you are unstoppable- every day you learn something new, take risks, win, fail and grow.
I think that with every passing yearn children become more and more intelligent. You can often hear about young geniuses making discoveries, breaking word records and showing extraordinary talents. Young people are open to everything new and that is why young developers are usually the most successful ones. It is amazing that parents encourage their children's talents and believe that they can do everything despite their age.
I don't like these types of comparissons. Kids nowadays are completely different than 90s kids because they grown up in completely different times. Technology is improving and it's obvious that kids should use it to not be behind. If i would choose i would like to be born nowadays because living is much easier at the moment. I'm jealous about young developers - If I could turn back time, i would start programming at young age.

I believe the major difference between growing up in 90's and nowadays is the technology around us. I got my very first phone, Nokia 3310, when I was 8, and it was just because I was going on a camp and just needed it. Then my parents took it away, because there was a greater change of me losing it than using it. Now I can see kids from primary school having better phones than I do.
I believe the greatest threat to young developers is growing up too fast. Kids are still developing persons and we should not treat them as adults. If they want to learn to develop applications we should definitely encourage them to do so. But let's not forget they are just kids - no matter how grown-up they behave or seem to be.

I think the major difference between growing up at 90's and nowadays is how kid can spending his free time. I was growning up at 90's and I spend hours on watching Cartoon Network. There were so funny cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo or The Flintstones. I think in today's cartoons there are so many violence and competition. This is awesome that there are so much young developers but if I could choose I would like to born in the past.

In my opinion the biggest difference is the amount of electronics. Now electronics is everywhere. IT has made a huge step forward in recent years.
I think I would choose to be born even earlier, but not too much. Thanks to that I could admire the development of many technologies from the beginning.
I think it's good to be a young programmer. However, this requires a lot of time and work.

Well, a few days ago I have read a funny article, where the author have started with the question:"How have we managed to survive our childhood?". He meant that we had crazy activities, sometimes dangerous and stupid, but it was a great time. And I remember, that almost every day we invented new games, learned how to socialize, how to be strong and fearless. I can't say much about kids nowadays, I don't have children. But I think, that the new age has ruined that childhood with all that old-school stuff and activities. It makes me sad a bit. Kids have ambitions like the grown-ups, they no longer come back home with dirty clothes and pockets full of colorful pieces of broken glass. Kids must be kids. I hope, that parents understand it and won't take away their best years.
The major difference is the accesibility to technology. When most of us were young we had like 1 pc per couple houses and only landline phones. We had to go to eachother houses instead of using fb.
Im so happy i was born in 90s and i don't know what could change my mind.
Those kids will be beating up ever programmer that started his jurney on highschool. Of course those classes should be only for those that enjoys it. Other way kids that don't will be frustrated as it is really hard to understand it for some.
Unknown said…
The biggest differences I can think of are access to technology and information and they are both basically the same thing. It's wonderful that people now are able to find any information anywhere, anytime without having to worry about distance to nearest bookstore or being forced to do a course in that specific topic.
If I could choose I would want to be born as late as possible just because I believe that this century will be a breakthrough in medical science that could result in my dream - immortal humans.

>1.What is the major difference between growing up at 90’s and nowadays?
Lack of VHS? But really? Well, its the possibility to look up any information about anything from a tiny plastic thingy in your hand. Life was made sooo much easier.
>2.If you could choose - when would you like to born, at present or in the past?
Still I'd like to be born in the past - without all these modern idiocracies such as multi-culti or "everyone is equal, no matter the cost" and other quirks of nowadays life.
>What do you think about young developers?
I don't care how old the developer is, as long as s/he writes good and clean code.
Patryk Pohnke said…
Well I think nowadays kids don't spend so much time outside. So they socialize less. That's definitely dangerous. From the other side they get used to technology sooner, so they can develop their skills.
I had happy childhood, so I won't change it.
The good thing is, they see things as young people do, so they can suit app better for children in their age.
I'd say that the influence of technology around them its what's changed the most. When i was 12 all i had was a mp3 player i would not have dreamed of a phone. Nowadays damn a 12y old has better phone than i do.

The more into the future them less ppl will have to worry about at all ages, but i would not change when i was born.

You do you and they do what they are capable of doing... Its like asking what do you think about young painters. All they do is follow they dreams/ grow their hobbys and talents.

A kid complaining that every kid that wanna learn to play soccer can join soccer club, for learning to play violin you can get lessons to play violin, but kids can't learn programming because there is no club for it? Where did he learn then? Was born with the knowledge? I'd say it's easier to learn things on your own these days than ever. The internet, the free and open places, sources of knowledge are all there within our grasp. A kid saying he's writing in Python, C, Java, etc but when the Apple released the iPhone with their SDK, that's when it OPENED UP WHOLE NEW WORLD OF POSSIBILITES, like, c'mon. Nicely staged, little unnatural, but I hate when they use kids to sell us things.
Back to topic, it's easier today than in the 90's. Doesn't mean it's better though. The kid's experiences just differ today from that time. It will again differ in the next 10-20 years. Only natural. I would like to be born now or in the future. I'll pass on the past. Young developers are the future of this industry so I wish them the best experience on their way.

I think that the major difference between growing in the 90's and right now is the ubiquitous technology among children. When I was younger I usually played with my friends, we would organise BayBlade contests for example. Right now children prefer to play videogames on their phone rather than spending time outside with their colleagues. If it comes to the time I was born, I am fully satisfied with it. And finally, I really respect young developers as they learn things which we learn right now and at the point of life where we are right now, they might come to a huge breakthrough in the world of technology

1. What is the major difference between growing up at 90’s and nowadays?
Well, beside of fashion or marketing possibilities, the most crucial thing is the tech. Technology develops exponentially and globalization become something very neutral for everyone very quickly. I think the major difference is an access to the Internet and tech devices. Everyone is able to get stuff instantly.
2. If you could choose - when would you like to born, at present or in the past?
I would rather be born at present time, I always prefer to benefit from human inventions, which are pretty always better and improved over time.
3. What do you think about young developers?
They are inexperienced, but it is great to see young kids talking with passion and ambition about tech.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
