Week 12 [22.01.2018 - 28.01.2018] How computers learn to recognize objects instantly

Technology of recognising object on an image is vital technology to move forward, it is useful almost everywhere nowadays (in robotics, medicine, education, security). This technology is a starter for new systems that might make our life even better.

Questions:

Do you like image recognition technology?
Do you think this is a useful technology? If not, please explain why?
This technology is an open-source technology, so would you like to try to build your own unique world changing a product or a start up?

I'm not an AI expert, but I find this field very interesting. To say more, not only image recognition - also fields like sound, text, face emotion or economic bobbles can be recognized and that's freaking amazing.
It depends what are you doing. If you spend your free time to create other dog photo recognition then I would say it's not useful. AI itself is really interesting and it will be our future I guess. Photo recognition can be used in:
- Searching for criminals,
- Phone unblock system (new Iphone),
- E - commerce (various different usages).
Why not both - build start up that made unique world changing product ;)?

I do like the image recognition technology, and find it very useful. The uses for that are almost endless. You can automatically make albums on your phone based on what's on them. As Andrzej said, you can find criminals by recognizing their face. You can make Augumented Reality / Mixed Reality apps and games. And that are just a few examples. I see very big potential in this and I think that there are many ideas that haven't been made real yet, that can earn people loads of money. If I get one of these ideas, then why not?

1. Yes, of course. The video is amazing, the algorithm detects the objects so quickly. It impresses.
2. Yes, In my opinion, it's a very powerful technology. For instance, developers could use this in robotics to make robots that serve people (in restaurants, hotels, etc). Or it also could be used in drones. I've heard that Dji has done something similar, their drones can follow the object, but it doesn't work perfectly yet.
3. No, but just because I don't fancy it (making apps, etc). Even so, I would like to read some articles or watch videos about the further development of the technology.

It's kind of cool and usefull but the tech that I'm looking forward to see in our lifetime is strong AI. That is what blows my mind. Imagine the world with the mind inside internet with limitless access to all the knowlage and ability to process it. That what would be not even next step or leap but rather whole new era.

Technology presented in the video was really impressive, its accuracy and real-time recognition was mind-blowing! In my opinion it could be very useful in many different fields of our life. With this kind of software we can obtain more and more automation that could make our life even more convenient. I think that if I got time, resources and good idea for a startup using this technology I would definitely give it a try!

In fact I know a bit about image recognition. I have played with OpenCV (image processing library) and Keras (neural network library) in python to classify images. Real-Time classification is another big thing which I would love to delve into. It is nice that they are open sourcing this technology, maybe in the future I will try to build something with this, like animal species detection system on smartphone.

1. Of course I like image recognition technology.
2. I consider image recognition as one of the most important advances in A.I. area. We can all agree that it is a basic building block of many useful and crucial projects, products and services. Actually there are no limits in number of areas where this technology could be applied because, as the presenter stated, it is general purpose by design.
3. Certainly I would like to try building world changing product or the next big thing, but currently I don’t have enough business experience and creativity to build a successful one and I don’t know if I will ever have.

Of course this is a very useful technology. So many difficult processes that took us a lot of time in the past now became quite easy to deal with. With image recognition technology, we can become productive in all industries. However, my point of interest is more about architecture. Image recognition will help put furniture into digital room design projects. We can be able to just take an image and scan it with our device, and then very easily the image of the i.e. chair will appear in the room in the project. Provided the size of an object is preserved, it will be a very useful tool for designers.

I think that it is amazing that we are able to use a technology to recognition objects on images. I think that it is useful technology which can be used for categorize our images on our computers or for something which is more important - for recognize criminals.

It is nice that such technology is an open-source and everybody can develop it. As a programmer I am not interested in this part of IT but I am happy that other people can use it to develop their products.

This kind of projects can really make a change - both in a good and bad meaning of it. It could help us making public places a lot safer as well as make unwarranted surveillance almost normal and acceptable. Overall, I really like and appreciate this technology, but the use cases for it should be somehow controlled by the authorities, if it would be used for something serious, which could break the limits of our privacy.
Currently, I don't have any serious projects in my mind that would make a good use out of this technology. I would like to learn it and be a professional in all AI related fields, but it's pretty hard to achieve in a short time. That seems like a good idea for a long term plan, though. If I'd ever have a project that could make a good use out of this technology, I wouldn't hesitate to implement it.

Image recognition technology has a huge impact on many things. Nowadays it helps autonomous cars to drive and it's getting popular in big cities to invigilate dangerous people. I like this technology however I don't want my boss to spy on me with his cameras in the office. I could try to join a startup, but I don't really like to code things connected with GPUs.

Technology itself is OK but I'm not really that much interested in it. Image processing in general helps in many different aspects in our lifes already, and it'll only get better with time. With enough progress it could help e.g. during check-in on the airport, by automatically verifying held objects. This is probably already happening to some degree, even though I still see humans manually verifying anyway.

Thanks to the author for the article. This technology is simply amazing. I really like that progress does not stand still, but it is constantly developing. I think that after ten years we are so used to this technology that we will be surprised how we lived without it. Already, my phone offers to find a specific object on the Internet, just pointing at it the camera lens. In addition, the guy in the video said that this technology helps develop robotics and medicine. This is obviously useful for cars with autopilot. I look forward to new discoveries and would very much like to see their application in our lives.

Taking into consideration how our species act and how our civilization is build I don't think that conducting further research into it will make a world a better place, quite the contrary. It will be used to further limit our freedom and privacy. Also I find it amusing that people believe that the way to stop crime is to have more security cameras with face recognition. I bet that reducing the poverty and wealth disparity would have a much bigger impact. Also I wouldn't like to take part in developing this technology, because of the aforementioned reasons and while it's definitely a world changing product, I do believe it would change it for worse.

I’m really amazed by the image recognition technology, it can be incredibly useful. The fact that some AI can recognize if your skin mark is cancerous, amazes me. I think that someday, when I have a good idea, I will definitely try to make some useful AI software.

I have no comparison for this image recognition technology because i'm really bad at AI, however i think that's solid algorithm. Yes this might be a useful technology in many cases. For example it would be easier for robots to do many things. I would like to build my own unique product that would change the world but i'm probably too lazy for that.

oh, wow! that technology is amazing. Some years ago I have first met the tineye web service. You just had to load the picture and it would find you the source. It was very useful when you needed to find places, authors, brand names. I have no idea, what algorithm did it use, but I thought that it was a great progress:) Now I am watching this TED talk and have the same feeling. I wish I could test it myself.

in context of treating cancer I like this idea though I am sure this techlonogy may go to the companies, which develop guns and then killing people precisely will be easier( I don't know if it's good or bad)
I think this technology is very useful because it will help to develop smart cars, which are seemed to be released on the market very soon.

An interesting article. Automatic detection of objects and classifying them is useful thing, but
I think that this technology can be dangerous. Let's imagine that government agencies are assembling
this algorithm in our webcams. This program, which now
seems innocent,in the future may be developed and harm our privacy. Answering the last question, I would be happy to create an unique product based on this algorithm, but right now I have no idea for its use.

Image recognition technology is both useful and scary. I have mixed feelings about it because it can as well make our lives safer by detecting dangerous individuals, but also it can ruin our privacy. Some people say that have nothing to hide but governments change and if a new one declares something illegal that was okay few years ago I wouldn't want them to have evidence of me doing said thing even if the law doesn't work backwards.
