Week 6 [20-26.11.17] Making dreams come true - The story of Christian von Koenigsegg

Many of us dream of starting successful companies, but at the same moment we do realise it is extremely difficult to actually be successful. Some of us get ideas along the way as we study or work, but some of us already get inspired as a kid. Very few of them manage to realise their plans. One of them is Christian von Koenigsegg.

Christian von Koenigsegg was born in 1972 in Stockholm. It only took him 5 years to realise what his biggest dream is. It was at the moment when he was watching the norwegian stop motion-animated movie(1) Flåklypa Grand Prix, a movie about a bicycle mechanic who with the help of his two close friends built a racecar that they managed to win a racing championship with, that he knew - he wants to build racecars for a living.

A still of a scene from Flåklypa Grand Prix

Driven by his dream he managed to finish high school in one year and then an economical programme in the Scandinavian School of Brussels. Remarkably - he has not had any training as a mechanic, apart from building RC cars and tuning friends’ mopeds as a hobby. In 1994, at the age of 22 he and a partner won a government grant to build a prototype they’ve been working on. He additionally managed to get loans to a total of about €6m from investors who wanted to support his dream to build the world's fastest car, and start up his own company Koenigsegg Automotive AB.

A photo from the Koenigsegg factory in Ängelholm

Their first car, the Koenigsegg CC8S, based on the original prototype blueprints went into mass production in 2002. Shortly after launch the car broke the Guinness Record - it became the world’s fastest production car(2) with the measured top speed of 241 mph (388 kph). Unfortunately, shortly after that, his factory caught a fire and got burned to the ground. Fortunately the team managed to recover a fair amount of tech from the site and could start over again at their current site - the Ängelholm air force base, where they have hangars for the factory and a full sized airstrip for testing their cars.

After moving to the new factory they continued producing hypercars and reaching multiple milestones. The CCR met all the new Swedish safety and emissions regulations. The CCX, released in 2005, met all safety and emissions regulations - globally. 2007: the CCXR, which produced a total power of 1018 horsepower running on biofuel (the only hypercar at that moment exempt from vehicle tax). In 2010 they released one of their most popular cars - the Agera, which beat multiple records with its various editions. 2014 brought the One:1 to us being their first car with 1:1 power to mass ratio - 1341 bhp to 1341 kg (hence the car's name). Lastly, in March 2015 (at the Geneva Auto Show) they released the Regera, which is a hybrid, being the most powerful production car at the moment (a total of 1797 horsepower), and in addition being a car with no gearbox! (The regera uses a fixed gear with a torque converter(3)). At the same time they released their Agera RS, which lately beat multiple world records on one day.

The real race for world records began when Bugatti released their promotional video for their Chiron in September 2017 where an ex F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya beats the 0-400-0 kph (0-249-0 mph) speed record with an astounding 42 seconds. People can barely believe this result is possible. And then, out of the blue,in the end of the same month, Koenigsegg says: We did not beat it. We crushed it.

Video of Bugatti Chiron with its 0-400-0 run

It was a sunny day in Nevada, when they closed off a nearly 10 mile long part of a Highway for a few runs. It was not until the next day that they planned the record-breaking attempt. But they did not need it. The test driver set the new record in two runs back and forth. The official time: 33.29 seconds - that means over 8 seconds faster than the Bugatti! After that they went down the road two more times to set a new average of 277.9 mph top speed. But that was not enough.

Video of Koenigsegg Agera RS with its 0-400-0 run

They managed to beat 3 additional records which have been unchallenged for nearly 80 years, set by Mercedes’s Rekordwagen in 1938. The Agera beat the flying kilometer record with its 276.9 mph (445.6 kph), flying mile with 276.36 mph (444.7 kph) and improve the highest public road speed doing 284.55 mph (457.9 kph). And all that wasn’t done by the company’s test car - it was supplied by an owner from the US who “was very keen to prove the performance credentials of the car we’ve built for him” - said Christian von Koenigsegg.

Video about one of Koenigsegg’s innovations: the Regeras’s wing

Over the years Christian von Koenigsegg managed to build a very successful company and keeps making his dream come true. He also invented and introduced many innovations in his cars (such as the triplex suspension(4), free valve technology(5), Regera spoiler raising mechanism, Koenigseggs’ unique door “hinges”(6) and more) which are revolutionising the motoring industry and steadily pushing the game forward. I think we can all agree, that his childhood dream is more than fulfilled.

Footnotes:
(1) Stop motion is a technique based on a series of drawings or photos which as a series of quickly changing pictures tricks the eyes that the object are moving.
(2) A production car is a car that is mass-produced, which according to FIA regulation means at least 25 units within a 12-month period, sold to individual clients.
(3) Torque conversion was implemented in its simple form early on in mopeds, which do not have a gearbox. It is done by a fluid coupling opposed to the mechanical clutch used in conventional vehicles.
(4) An innovative rear suspension mechanism allowing higher comfort and straight-line speed which are two major problems encountered in sportscars.
(5) A technology allowing much more precise timing of the engine's valve actions, which improves the power output of the engine (the better synchronised it is the more power is generated).
(6) The doors use an unique mechanism that lets them open without much effort, additionally working even in very tight parking spaces.

Questions:
Do you think everyone can become successful being driven only by their dreams?
Would you want to have your own company? Would it be IT, or something else?
What was your childhood dream (career-related), if you had one?

Feel free to answer the abovementioned questions and/or comment on the article in the comment section below! :)

I don't think that someone can become successful being driven only by dreams. I think that we should have dreams but it isn't over. Dream is only beginning of something that we should start on our own.
Having my own company would require a huge responsible. I'm not sure if I'm ready for such a stress life. Anyway it wouldn't be IT company for sure.
As a little and stupid girl I loved flowers and my only dream was to have my own flower shop and work there so that I could smell flowers all day. Maybe someday I will have one, who knows?

Becoming successful by being driven only by dreams isn’t impossible but it is rare and also risky a little bit. If you have dreams and try to make them true you should also try to stay focused and be rational. Relying only on dreams and emotions may be dangerous and unsuccessful.
It’s obvious that I’d like to have my own IT company. Leading your own company may be challenging and difficult. I like challenging things.
As a young boy I used to like cars so I’ve always dreamed to become car mechanic. Fortunately I have opportunity to do this in my free time.

Yes, having a company can be pretty stressful, especially if everything is not going as you want it to. That is definitely something to consider before deciding to start a business :)
Unknown said…
You're right, especially when it comes to really difficult professions like IT. To start a company you really need the knowledge, even if you're going to employ people you should know a lot so that you can actually control your employees and evaluate their work. It is definitely challenging, but as you implied - the satisfaction of running a successful business must be enormous.

Is it possible to become successful being driven only by dreams but this is very rare I think. If our dream is really achievable and we have the right attitude and there aren't many difficulties on the road to the dream it can works but when there are a lot of problems while chasing this dream beeing driven only by this dream may not be enough.
Of course I would want to have my own company (preferably music industry).
I had a lot of dreams about my carrer as a kid. I was dreaming about becoming a doctor/military officer/musician.

I believe that being driven only by dreams is not enough. You have to work hard, be detrminated and work more. You have to be patient, because it may take a lot of time. You have to be ceareful, becuase it may affect many aspects of your life - your relationships, work, free time and actually everything. It may be hard, as long as there will be hard moments and challenges. It would be nice to have a someone who will support you - even by telling that you can achieve what you want.
When I was in kindergarden I told everyone that in the future I will be boss of Sony. My friends wanted to be firefighters, sellers or hairdressers - my family laughed at me and at family spends they called me "boss" :)

I think that everyone can be succesful being driven only by your dreams it only depends on you. If you work hard and never give up , in the end you will achieve success. Everyone knows that different things can happen in our lives and sometime you have to give up on your dreams.
Of course I would like to have my own car company and design and test cars. Some time ago I watched " Top Gear" and I thought that this is dream job.
To be honest I don't remember my childhood dream.

Of course everyone can become successful being driven only by their dreams. This is the only way in my opinion to be truly successful, however simple idea is not enough - knowledge, patience and luck is also required. Personally, I would love to have my own successful company or business. IT and generally tech is a largest area for my experience and knowledge, therefore it would be most stable and certain idea. I was thinking about connecting it with medicine and general health. When I was a kid I always wanted to become astronaut and I have spent all my spare time on reading books about universe, I guess these dreams got lost somewhere during growing up.
I don't think that everyone can be successful being driven only by their dreams. The key to success is hard working and knowledge. Yes of course, I would love to have my own company. I don't mind if it would be in IT. Developing and seeing how it (the company) grows must be very fascinating.

I think that if you commit to something completely, do everything you can to achieve your goal and accept possibility of failure you can become succesfull and chase your dreams. But without full commitment your desires will only stay in the sphere of dreams and you won't succeed. I don't know whether I would like to have my own company, I believe it's kind of stressful and basically you're working all the time when you want to have everything under control. I would have to have a good idea for a business to start my company. As a child I've always dreamed about being a footballer or a musician, but reality is that these are really hard jobs, especially in Poland, so I will just turn my childhood dreams into hobbies. ;)

Actually I don't think everyone can achieve such a result. It doesn't matter if you have a dream or passion. It definitely helps but in the end the question is whether you got into right place on right time. Passion can increase you chances but you can't beat universe and that what you have keep in mind while chasing you dream. What regards my company I'm not sure yet... Still thinking about my options and what do I like more coding or management.

wow, I considered Bugatti to be the fastest car!
Firstly, your idea has to have great potencial. Moreover, it should be studied, compared to other ideas, topical.
yeah, but it needs the basics of enterprise and economics
because i reckon it to be very important to run your own business successfully
yeah, I wanted to became an astronaut, a policeman, but it were unstable dreams of my childhood.
Dear Emil, that was a very interesting and inspiring article. And so many pretty pictures! I think in creating successful business dreams are not enough - hard work, surrounding yourself with right people and a little bit of luck are definitely needed. I’d like to start my own business but I won’t tell you more cause I’m worried you will steal my idea. As a kid I wanted to be a rockstar. Don’t ask why. I seriously don’t know.

I would like to find my own company in the future. It definitely will be an IT company but I have no good ideas for now so it's just my dream, and as we learn from the article, the dream became true so I hope that one day my dream also would become reallity.

Thanks for the videos posted as I am keen on cars and those clips are really interesting.
Many successful people say that pursuing their dreams is the most important thing in your life. But was it in fact sufficient to build their businesses and careers ? I am pretty sure that was not enough, they also had to do many other things like working hard, overcoming obstacles and what is also very important they had to be lucky.
I would like to have my own company one day but I am aware how hard could it possibly be to make it profitable. You have to have great ideas, sufficient budget and right people involved in order to succeed. I am not sure if it would be pure IT related business, it definitely should be something that will challenge me and let me push myself out of my comfort zone.
As a kid I dreamed about being F1 driver.

Yes, everyone can become successful being driven only by their dreams. The biggest and most recognizable companies was build like that - with passion, not desire of being wealth.

I've always wanted to run my own buisness. I am not talking about inheriting company from parents. I would like to build something by my own. I am not sure it's going to be related to IT.

After I watched "rocky 6" for the first time, I wanted to become a boxer. After all it was only my unstable, non-realistic dream.

I really like your presentation, good job:) I am into cars, but I have never heard about this man, so I was glad to learn something new. At PJATK we had lectures about the history of car design, and we was told about the projects, which maybe wasn't very successful, but was created with passion. It were great stories of people, who's passion and dreams were more important then power and money, amazing people. Nowadays success is associated mostly with money and fame, and this is problem. People think that the best scenery of life is to be popular and own a corporation. But what if success is not only the money? Yes, I do think you can be a successful by following your dreams. Being happy and living in harmony is better than owning a biggest house. But its only my opinion.
To tell the truth, I would like to have my own company, but it's not about power - it's about doing something that I'd love to. Some small business, that will make me happy and satisfied with my job.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a journalist, a surgeon, a detective and a zoo-keeper:)

Your childhood dream is a great dream to hold on to! Sounds really great and is definitely a life I'd like to live.
Unknown said…
That's a great story! Are you still pursuing your dream? :D
Unknown said…
Oh yes, working as one of the presenters of the 'old' Top Gear (now Grand Tour) really sounds like a dream. Especially that you're just an employee and are not responsible for anything :)
Unknown said…
I'm very happy that you found the article, and even more - the videos interesting.

Being a race driver is still one of my dreams, even if the chances of becoming a professional one are getting smaller and smaller for each year not competing.
Unknown said…
I am really happy that the article was informative :)

It's all associated with money because succesful businesses generate it - often lots of it, but it's just a side effect and not a main one.
Unknown said…
That is to a great extent true. If Koenigsegg built the fastest coal-powered train it would not be a huge success in the world of modern trains, so you have a point in what you're saying.
Unknown said…
Bugatti always either claim they're the fastest, or imply that in their ads/promotional material. We just have to remember they're part of Volkswagen, and we already know about how trustworthy they are after the emissions scandal :) Despite that, the Chiron still is a very impressive car.

I don't think that everyone can be successful being driven only by their dreams. The most important is hard working and perseverance. People are lazy and that's why there is only group of people whose dreams come true.

I would like to make own business in the future. I know that is not easy but I want to make good life to my family. I hope to achieve this

When I was a kid I wanted to be a footballer.
Unknown said…
That is true, without at least some social skills you are very unlikely to have a successful business. It might be easier when it's already big and recognized and you're employing lots of people, including PR. But you still have to get there to begin with.
Unknown said…
I just couldn't agree more with what you said. Without full commitment it is very hard to achieve anything, it seems like this is the secret ingredient to actually get these kinds of dreams come true.
Unknown said…
And let's not forget - hard work to achieve the dreams is a must too!
To be successful, a business venue requires proper funding, planning, management and many more. Even then, only a small percentage of venues become successful. Having a dream is not enough, although it might serve as a good basis, a drive to push you forward through tackling all the other obstacles.

I've never viewed myself as much of an entrepreneur, but I thing I'd like building super cars. I've always liked puzzles and this kind of job provides you with plenty problems to figure out.
I guess everone "can" be successful if they are following their dreams hard and, luck is on their side. By luck i mean that, your idea will fill some market niche or your product or whatever you create will be at least noticed and nothing crushing will happen.

Nah, i never thought about it. I were always looking to work at cdpr and that was my main dream connected with carrer.

Nissan Skyline after watching first "fast and furious", duuuh.

Do you think everyone can become successful being driven only by their dreams?
I don’t think so. If so then everyone would be successful right now. In my opinion the key to be successful is not only having a dream, but also determination to achieve them. And maybe some good luck.
Would you want to have your own company? Would it be IT, or something else?
I think in some day I would like to lead some company but this is not my life-goal, and probably it would be some IT related company.
What was your childhood dream (career-related), if you had one?
I had many dreams, when I was child, like be an astronaut, but many of them were crashed by reality.
Vyvyan said…
I think that following our dreams can end with success but it has to be our passion. We have to work hard and sacrifice ourselves to accomplish our goal. So it's not like everyone can become successful.

Maybe in future I would like to have my own company. It would be related with IT - games production. But having a company is a great responsibility and requires specific budget.

My childhood dream was to be a singer. Today I'm just posting my records on facebook or youtube so partly I achieved what I wanted.

It all starts with a dream. A picture in your mind, a goal you feel you live for, been born for, if it truly is that, then all you can do is chase it. You will find a way, not by mere wanting but doing. It will look like hard work for others but it's going to be thrilling for you. A little luck with the right place and the right time may always help though ;)
Haven't thought about my own company but I do see how difficult and broad topic it is. It depends on what you want/like to do. If you like to make baskets and start you own company making baskets, you will not make baskets but will have to organize everything around the process of making a basket. From place/office, through funding and clients to workers and various issues and problems. In the end you may not do what you like to do - make baskets but might still feel fulfilled by producing baskets.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a fireman, scientist, an astronaut, solider (that one's weird from my todays point of view), wrc driver, a programmer/IT guy ofc, all kinds of things, the world was an endlesss opportunity. Too bad I've had grown out of it.

I really admire Christian. I'm a petrol head, so I was watching competition between Bugatti and Koenigsegg from the beginning. In my opinion, with enormous amount of work and determination you are able to do anything you dreamt of. I wanted to be an f1 driver when I was a kid.
I would like to have my own company somewhere in the future. I'm a developer, so yes, it would be an IT company, but at this moment, I don't have a vision what would it do.
I don’t really think that everyone can become successful being driven by only their dreams. I think that a tiny amount of such people would become somewhat successful (some people have dumb dreams I guess).
I would like to have my own company, It could be IT, but my real dream is to have some kind of restaurant, bar or something like that. I don’t think that I’ve had any childhood dream related to my future career, and even if I had I don’t remember it.
Personally I don't think everyone can become successful being driven only by their dreams. In my opinion passion and perseverance will help you to achieve your dream, also don't forget about luck. I'm definitely want to have my own company, but not now. I think , it would be related most definitely with IT/Design. As a kid I dreamed about being pilot and still have passion for everything that connected with aviation.

I think it is a very rare phenomenon that people become successful being driven only by their dreams, mostly it is a combination of hard work, passion and dedication. When it comes to company then I have to say “yes”, I would like to have a my own one. It can be IT since it can be very lucrative business if you acquire big clients but I am not closed for one type. I am also a huge petrolhead so something connected with cars would also be a good idea, maybe even a fusion of IT and cars. Finally, I don’t think that I had any childhood career-related dream which I am pursuing right now so I am not able to give you any example from my life.
Unknown said…
For me you have to dream because if you are dreaming, with determination you will eventually achieve it.
I would like to have my own company, for sure it will be IT.
Actually when I was young I wanted to have company with video games. Today I am thinking about something else:)

I think being successful is not only about dreams. It's about the way of thinking, working, being. I wouldn't want to have my own company as for the moment I feel it would be too big responsibility. But in the future - maybe. I didn't have any career-related dream when I was a child. I wanted to be a vet, but then I learn being a vet is not about hugging animals and putting a dressing patch on a paw. I didn't want to be a vet any more.

Dreams are not enough. You need to be dedicated and work hard to achieve your goals/dreams. Christian von Koenigsegg is a great example. Nothing comes easy in life. However if you like what you are doing, the hard path to success is going to be more enjoyable than painful.
Personally, I'd like to have my own company which owns many luxurious hotels around the world, but "with great power comes great responsibility". As a CEO you are responsible for your employees. If you fail or make a wrong decision they can also pay for that. That's why I think it's not the best moment in my life to be a company owner. I don't want to fail other people. I need to learn more, but one day maybe I will achieve my goal ;)

I don't think that everyone can become successful being driven only by their dreams. If you want to succeed you must work, work and work.
I started my own company about 9 months ago. And it is a IT company. It was most stressful part of my life. But know there are more advantages than disadvantages.

Dream is end goal - how we achieve it, and if, is entirely another thing. I have a dream of becoming successful programmer and creating my own company someday, but whether it will happen or not will be the result of my hard work and determination, not just having that dream itself.

Koenigseggs are amazing. One:1 is just sick! Incredible car. I'm really happy, that they've beaten Bugatti.
Yes, Robert Gryn for example. Hard work will make your dreams come true.
Sure, I’d love to have my own business and I’m pretty sure, that it will be an IT business. Maybe software house?
My biggest childhood dream was to become a rock star, cause I’m really 90’s nu metal kid: Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, you know ;).

I think dreams are not enough to make it happen. It is worth to have a goal and to change it to be fulfilled. My dream is to set up my own company, which will introduce automated systems to companies.

I'm not into cars but the story of Christian von Koenigsegg is inspiring. It's very important in life to have both small and big dreams and stick to them as long as you can. We should also remember to actually do something to fulfill those dreams and it's probably the hardest and usually forgotten part of "dreaming".
Unfortunately dreams also have evil side - there are a lot of people who "sell" dreams and give other people false hope just to earn money. We should remember that not every dream can be achieved and they ought to be chosen wisely.

I think that our dreams depend only on us. If we really want to come it true, we will do everything to achieve it. Walt Disney said "If you can dream something, you can also achieve it" and I believe it.
I want to have a company connected with IT, but now I don't have fair idea. Now I am gaining experience and think about something own. If I come up with an really good idea, I will realize it.
I wanted to be an actress, but I wasn't confident if I was enough good at it. On the other hand I can study at technical university after graduating humanistic school what was my second dream.
Great article. Good movies attached. I loved Koenigsegg first time playing it in Need For Speed the Game. The sound and speed of it was just amazing. After that I saw it at the expo in Lipsk loved it even more. After watching it speeding in Need For Speed the movie I was just amazed. Did not know the background story of the fight vs the Bugatti - good to know. Would like to drive one for a while but the price for 1 day is just way too much currently.

From what I know, driving one is not as exciting as it sounds. With all the electronics and computers in the car you can go from 0 to 300 to 0 holding the wheel with one finger. If you're looking for smiles per gallon, have a look at cars without assists, like the Porsche Carrera GT. Only thing helping you not to die are the anti-lock brakes :)

You can always get subsidized if you have a good idea. There are subsidies from the government, from big organisations, from the EU and there are even TV shows like Dragons Den. The budget does not have to be an issue if you have a good idea. Getting a subsidy is even better because it's easier to kick off in regards of not having to risk all your savings you've accumulated for the past ?? years, which makes it easier to actually use the money.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
