Week 9 [05.12 - 11.12] Health problems and childhood obesity

Walking on the street, we can see more and more obese children. It turns out that every fifth polish child has problem with obesity.

It's an easy way to have in future chronic diseases which can decrease their life expectancy. What are the main reasons of obesity in the young generation?

When a baby is discovering different things and experimenting with them, it can get addicted to bad habits easily. I'm speaking about junk food and new technologies, which also can contribute to the development of obesity. Ready-to-use products, fast food can make our life easier, but can also lead to ruin our health. Why is that happening?

Every processed food includes many food additives like colours, emulsifiers or solid vegetable fat. They are "empty" and don't have any value for the organism of child. Even worse, they lead to the production of additional energy, which is one of the most important factors for the proper functioning of human bodies.

Michael Matthews - Bigger Leaner Stronger, chapter 7, page 129

The lighter portions are the periods where your body has excess energy. The darker portions are the periods when the body has no energy left from food and thus has to burn fat to stay alive. When the lighter part will be bigger than the darker one, then this excess energy transforms into fat which is the cause of a child's obesity.

A surplus of energy can be reduced by feeding children nutritious meals and encouraging them to do some sport. PE lessons would be an ideal example of physical activity for children because it's a compulsory subject in every school, but unfortunately it doesn't work well. Why? Data generated by National Audit Office indicate that as much as 15% of primary schools' students (from fourth to sixth class), 23% of secondary schools' students and 30% of high schools' students don't attend PE classes.   Children and youngsters stated as reasons of avoiding physical exercises: diseases which prevent doing any intensive physical activity (35%) and unattractive way of teaching (31%).

As we can notice, the will of attending to PE classes goes down with increased age. To prevent development of this negative trend, Ministry of Sport and Tourism started public campaign "Stop exemptions from Physical Education".

Source

The main goal of this mission was to stop more and more absences on PE classes. In this action took part famous sportsmen and sportswomen, so additionally it promoted sport as a trendy way of spending free time.

Did you avoid PE classes? Why?
What are your ways to keep your bodies in shape?
Do you have any ideas to encourage the current generation to do sports and resign from daily intake of junk food?

It's good idea to stop exemptions from Physical Education. I noticed that it is more and more difficult to meet slim children. When I was in school I didn't like physical activities: I hate running, but I like team sports. In last year of high school I didn't go to PE because I sprained my foot. To keep my body in shape I have physical exercise practically everyday. To encourage young people to physical activity it's a good idea to make some phone application which makes people run to get maybe new level. Pokemon Go is not bad game because it makes us walk.

To be honest I have been avoiding PE classes since my primary school through the secondary school and high school. For most of cases it was in my opinion fault of a teachers who wasn't able to interest us with any sport, but they all was great at stressing students and forcing them to do every stupid sport.
Now I am very active person. For a long time I was doing running for 10, 15 or even 20 kilometers, but now I can't jog anymore because of injury of a knee - typical problem for runners. Now I go to the gym three times a week.
In my opinion a good idea is the kinect console. It combines some kind of sport and technology. It's perfect for young people know. I have tried playing tennis like this and I must admit that it can be really exhausting entertainment.

I used to avoid PE classes. I don't like most kinds of sport and engage sparingly even in those which I do like. I eat quite a lot, including sweets, pizza, kebab, kielbasa, french fries (but I eat a lot of healthier food aswell). And...

I am 25 years old male with 183 cm height and I weight 55 kg. My highest weight ever was 59 kg in high school. So obesity from eating too much or not enough sports is something abstract to me. I do walk a lot though, I can't sit in one place and when I wait for something or just think about something I walk (even few kilometers every day from one side of the room to another).

I always have mark 6 from PE lessons. I always participated in PE. So far I'm on workout at least 3 times per week. I do Brazilian jiu-jitsu and strength training in the gym. In my opinion everybody have to choose yourself if we want to be obese or athletic. It is never too late to train a sport.

luckily I was such a child who loved PE. I didn't go to PE only when I was sick. Unfortunately, many people do not went on PE. The worst part is that parents allow. It is terrible because they spoil the health of their children. I myself was in the class of sports. I had to go to the AWF but unfortunately I caught injuries. Anyway dear children more physical activity!! :)

Personally I hate PE, I always have problems with passing it. Only sport I accept is watching champions league in tv. My body is always in great shape, I don't need to improve it. Therefore I have much more time to spend in front of computer to watch funny videos on youtube. My favourite are fails of the week or man punching kangaroo in face. I have nevr been on diet too.

I haven't known about this campaign, but I think it's very good idea. I completely support it!

When I was younger, I was always attending on PE lessons. Of course, there were some situations that I didn't like it. Mostly because of teacher. But at the same time, I knew it's good for me - I was just brought up in this way. After school I practised sport all the time (riding a bike, swimming etc.).

Unfortunatelly, I had colleagues, who avoid sport and PE lessons (like Wojtek). I didn't (and don't now) understand them. To be honest, despite the fact that I treat Wojtek's statement as provocation, I could talk about it for hours (but let's not do it ;)). Of course, I exclude health problems.

For me, sport is important part of life. Thanks to it, I've learned many things such as how to compete, how to behave fair play and - the most important for me - how to schedule my time. I think every child should practise sport, but it depends (as everything at this age) on parents.

But how to teach children if some parents don't understand?

Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of premature death and disability in adulthood. Overweight and obese children are more likely to stay obese into adulthood and to develop noncommunicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age. The most significant health consequences of childhood overweight and obesity, that often do not become apparent until adulthood, include:
- cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke)
- diabetes
- certain types of cancer

It is truth that some further action should be taken to reverse this trend.

I have never been avoiding PE lessons, but I think this event is pointless, unless something changes with our PE classes. As I recall, most of our classes were like "here, have this ball and play" that is not a way to make all children train. Some of them want to try different sports. As to helthy food, I am afraid that children will not try healthy food because of parents bragging. Children are too early in life to see difference in self-comfort after eating junk food and after healthy one. Maybe more events with popular role models would convince them to try and change.

I always went to PE classes, but I was among the few people who did this. Sometimes it resulted from poor way of teaching, but a lot of people were simply lazy! Lack of physical activity isn't only bad for obese people but also for slim. Maybe you have heard of such a thing as visceral fat, this is the fat which accumulates around our internal organs and thereby causes various ailments even a slim person could have it if they don't exercise and nourish inappropriately. In my opinion there are more and more obese people because it appears more food of poor quality in shops and not many people pays attention to what they eat and what their children eat. My parents let me eat a lot of junk food but when I grow up I decide that I change my diet. I never be obese but know I feel better and I have more power. I think we should educate children about healthy eating in schools and learn healthy habits beacuse bad diet and lack of activity has a bad effect on our health in the future.

I've never had problem with overweight, I was an active child, I've done a lot of sports outside the school. I've never had a permanent exemption from PE classes, however I sometimes forged short period exemptions. I remember that in secondary school I hated PE because I was always made to play volleyball with obviously stronger boys from class or even from addictional volleyball classes. Seriously every PE class in the whole year looked the same and it was volleyball match! From that time the only volleyball I play is the one on the beach with soft air-ball, secondary school succesfully make me hate volleyball. In primary school and highschool I really enjoyed PE classes, exercises were diversified and interesting. A fortiori I loved the possibility to choose the activity as part of PE classes on my studies, of course I've chosen dance classes.

I was always an active person. From my childhood I always had a lot to do with sports - in my primary school I was in swimming-sport class, I trained swimming two times a day. After that I changed that activity to something else. I started dancing. After I started to train martial arts. I never had some serious problems with obesity or overweight, but the problem arises. As we can see now kids spend more time before the computer screen than on some trainings or physical activities. I never skipped PE classes, although I didn't like them. As I remember at school we always played volleyball which I truly hate. Maybe that's why I never remind the PE classes as some good memories...

I agree that it's a major issue, although I avoided PE classes at school - they were really boring, just the same exercises over and over. I think that excitement and competition is important, we should encourage children to take part in some sports or even use a gamification technique in PE. Also, I don't know if it was normal in 90s, but I couldn't afford so many sweets in my childhood, currently kids can eat them constantly so they have to control themselves instead:)

I have never avoided the PE classes and as far as I can remember, boys always loved these classes, we could simply play football, basketball, volleyball, we could move and also have fun together.
As far as I have noticed, it was quite contrary with girls, they used to split to two groups: the one would enjoy sport and even want to play with us, and the other one would skip the lessons, sit on benches and talk or gossip about something.
What makes me feel great and full of energy and strength is actually moving, exercising and working out, but I don't have so much time currently so I miss the PE classes that I used to have before.
I believe that the teachers should show the youngsters that sport is fun and eating healthy is cool, so they actually want to do it themselves. Maybe bringing a strong man or a fitness specialist twice a term would encourage them so they would meet someone they can look up to?
I never avoid PE classes in school - I'm not the fan of running or simply exercising, but I really enjoy team sports. I don't understand why someone, especially girls, avoid it.

I dont' think that this is only reason why children are thicker. When I was a child, I didn't spent so much time in front of tv or computer eating sweets, there were another entertainments. Of course when I got a chance, I use it and sit in front of tv/computer all day, but that kind of day was one in a month.

I was avoiding PE lessons only in high school, because I have never been a sport type, so I had got problems sometimes with some excersises or technique to perform them correctly, but in primary school and middle school it wasn't a problem, because I was trying to and there was no problem with the fact that it didn't work perfect, but in high school PE teacher was telling it out loud that I've done something wrong, everytime, in front of all class and after few lessons I felt embarrassed - new school, new people and everyone can hear how incapable of sports I am. Before high school I enjoyed PE lessons and some sport - recreational.
I think that if someone would show children that healhy food is delicious and looks nice they would like to eat it, instead of junk food.
Looking after what I have eaten in childhood i should weigh more than 100kg. A lot of McDonald, fat fries and chips bought mainly for Pokemon should induce me obesity but not make it. Why? I really don't know. Someone can tell about genetics but for me it is an excuse for people who do not perform any sport and only sit on chair. If we don't want to childhood obesity we should build more gyms near school and encourage young people do not attend. Ban for "junk food" not change anything.

I think PE classes are very often bad, because of the teachers and lack of infrastructure in schools. In many schools classes have to share one room, so there was no way to play a proper football or basketball match, because all your group had was a 1/4 of gym room. I haven't avoided PE classes, but I think there is much to be improved about them, to make kids interested in doing sport.
Wait so I'm either obese or athletic? There is no middle ground? You can eat healthy and stay slim. Or even eat unhealthy but right proportions. Surely you won't be fit if you don't do any physical activity but that doesn't mean I'm obese.

I think often times PE comes to playing football, volleyball or something. Not everyone likes sports hence students miss PE. In my opinion it should focus on endurance training and teaching about healthy eating.

Same story for me :D In my childhood Ive eaten tons of chips mostly for.. Pokemon Tazos :D I cant imagine how I didn't became fat in the way i could spin around my axle!

I didn't like to attend PE classes in my school. It was always about a competition. And if you loose - you are a looser for a long time. I didn't also like the way PE classes were taught. You have to pass exams in any way even if the classes didn't give you enough training because teachers didn't want to show you how to breath and move right.
I experienced by myself how bad the junk food can be for me. It's really easy to gain ten kilograms for a couple of months just because of eating that food and don't have enough movement.
I think the main reason of children's obesity are parents who don't have a time to cook a proper food for them.
Eh I must admit that I never liked PE classes and did avoid them from time to time when I was younger, as I'm not sports person, I was never really good in it, so I preferred to play games and push my logical thinking to maximum rather than playing football :). Maybe it looks different in other schools, but in my case it 4 out of 5 classes looked always the same - we played football and nothing more, which I'm sure some people can find quite interesting, as it was always a choice what we're doing, but I didn't enjoy it, even though I tried to participate and not skip any class due to my lazyness or unwilling.

Still, I'd do anything but actual sport, I'm lazy as ****, and I know it's not healthy to be spending time coding and playing video games, but I find it really hard to actually do some running or anything that involves physical excercise, I guess I'll never enjoy any of that to be honest...

I was always avoiding these lessons thanks to my parents who was very understanding with this topic. The teachers made us lift the heavy items, run along the street with crazy traffic and jump in dirty sand. So it was much more chances to get ill then to become healthy.
Now I love sports and healthy eating. But at the gym I choose the training by myself and can control the situation.
In my opinion, the problem with children obesity could be easily solved by their parents. If only the parents would understand it and find the time to pay attention to the children's diet.
I've never avoided PE classes - but I had many things to choose from - usually football and swimming pool.
I've trained shooting on Monday and Saturday, Boxing on Tuesday, Climbing on Thursday and that was my way to keep me fit.
Now I am at school from about 3 months and don't have so much time for all other activities and as I see my belly is starting to grow :) For me also it's hard to resign from junk food. Just way too much of it - but I really don't have time to prepare healthy food as usual.

I believe that young people’s lifestyle differs greatly from time when I was a kid. I manage to spend the whole day outside playing basketball. Nowadays children spent most of their leisure time in front of computer. It is impossible to be healthy when you do nothing apart from playing video games, eating junky food or spending most of your time on Facebook. In my opinion if the situation doesn’t change the problem of obesity will become more and more serious.
The lack of infrastructure is definitely a big problem in many places in Poland, but I think that it is fair to say that it is better than it was ever before and still the number of children avoiding PE classes is growing. Maybe it's the lack of diversity of sporting disciplines or PE teachers not being trained properly?
When I was a kid, I've always tried not to avoid PE classes, but at the time there were no smartphones or tablets that would probably have a big impact on my childhood.
To keep my body in shape I attend the gym at least once a week and I would recommend it to anyone in my age. I like the idea of "Stop exemptions from Physical Education" campaign. I think that promoting the sport as "cool and trendy" is a key to encourage the current generation to be more physically active. The only question is how to make such campaign more effective? Perhaps the social media could help in delivering the message to the right audience.

Proper diet is a lot more important for your health than a regular physical activity. Recent studies shows that fat tissue is very active - it is a lot more complex than we used to think. For example, fat is a very important endocrine organ, mainly known for producing estrogen, a female hormone. An excess amount of fat could overproduce those hormones, even in a male body! As you see, that could make a harm for your health, especially if you are a male, excess fat could deregulate your endocrine system, and even a hard workout would't help. A good diet is the best what you can do for your health.

I think young parents are more educated and they are focused on health on their childs. For example many of kids are playing football's kindergartens, many kids are swimming. I think it was a little crisis, but goverment are educating parents in good way.

I think that children with obesity problems, who eat unhealthy food mostly just act like their parents. Parents don't poison their children on purpose, they just have bad eating and health habits of their own and don't see there's anything wrong. If the whole family was on a healthy diet for a month, they would never return to their old habits of eating unhealthy.
Personally, I don't like premade food you can buy in a shop, I don't eat meat and I can immediately see the difference in how I feel after eating a hot, home made, valuable meal and how I feel after ordering a greasy pizza. If I had kids I would probably care about healthy food even more.
However, I think PE classes are horrible and I spent half of my year dodging them. I always had an exemption. I never liked sports, especially between math and literature lesson at school. Carrying additional clothes and changing in front of other people was also not something I enjoyed. Ever since I can remember I hated team based sports and it never changed.

The funny thing is that I am one of the person who is always slim and would even say skinny and at the same time i am the peroson who used to avoid PE classes. Nowdays I regret this decision and i can say on my own example That the EP is not only about keep in shape. I avoided PE only becouse i was lazy and now is the time for the Consequences. I joined some sports classes and my skills and condition is worse then i expected. When you are teenager is the most important time to keep physical activity because this will affect the whole future.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
