Week 9 [05.12 - 11.12] Favourite childhood games

Our generation remember the times when the internet speed didn’t exceed 128kb/s or maybe some of us did not have the internet access. Do you remember how you could get a new game? In my case that was 3,5 inches floppy disc with capacity 150MB or CD(but it was little later). My first computer was terribly weak. I don’t remember its parameters, but when I was starting it, I could go to the kitchen, prepare some food and eat it. I had a black and white screen, which was very big because it was about… 15 inches.

The first game I ever played was Aladdin. This is an old DOS game published in 1994 by Walt Disney. The game was inspired by the animated film of 1992 with the same name. It’s based on the movie and you are placed in the same areas as the hero in the movie - streets and rooftops of Agrabah. The main genre of this game is action.

If you want to try this game, here you have a link to its web version: http://game-oldies.com/play-online/aladdin-sega-genesis

The next game of my childhood is the well known Dyna blaster and Bomberman. They were published in 1991 by Hudson Soft. You are a young villain fighting against monsters to save your girlfriend at the end of game. It was the hardest game I’ve ever played because you’ve got only 3 lives.  This arcade game was the first I played with a color screen. There are no any words that can describe what I felt then. Let’s look at a snapshot of Bomberman.

Next Deluxe Ski Jump, in short DSJ. I won’t believe that someone haven’t played or doesn’t know this game. There are many versions of this game but the first was made and published 4th July 1999. The author is a Finnish game developer Jussi Koskela. Deluxe Ski Jump is considered one of the best simulators. The biggest popularity of this game is associated with Adam Małysz’s  victory in 49th Four Hills Tournament.

At the end of my presentation I have a brain teaser. There is one very old game made in year 1998 by a Finnish developer named Joose Riekkinen. I’ll put some snapshots of this game below and you have to guess the name. Who will be first?

Maybe you know some other games? Share with us! J

Thank you!

I remember playing Deluxe Ski at my IT lessons at primary school, it was awsome :P When I was very young I have been playing Hercules. This game has teach me the difference between right and left side when my uncle has been telling me turn right or left. I remember some games, but I don't know the names. One of them was about being a human (I think) and collecting fruits while avoiding ants. Now I can realize how old I am or how bad memory I have ;)

I remember Deluxe Ski Jump. Brilliant game :) I always played with my uncle. I remember my first game was a need for speed. My parents bought me also steering wheels. I remember to install the game we had to call IT guy Haha :) It was a beautiful time
The last game is called LIERO!

My favourite childhood game was carmagedon, the main point was to kill as many people as you can, it was great fun, but my mom thought that it was too less violent so she had bought me a gta an it was so good, i can do as much as in carmagedon but even more. Shooting people with ak47 was the greatest thing in my life. I have never experienced anything like that,

Snakes and Ladders. It is played between two or more players on a gameboard having numbered, gridded squares. A number of "ladders" and "snakes" are pictured on the board, each connecting two specific board squares. The object of the game is to navigate one's game piece, according to die rolls, from the start (bottom square) to the finish (top square), helped or hindered by ladders and snakes respectively. The historic version had root in morality lessons, where a player's progression up the board represented a life journey complicated by virtues (ladders) and vices (snakes).

Ahh, sweet memories. I personally remember Aladin, Cpt. Claw, Jazz Jackarbbit, Bomber, Deluxe Ski Jump. Nowadays I am not as eager to play, mostly because of lack of time. The game you provided is probably Liero.
In my childhood I used to play all of the games you listed except the last one. Among other titles I can mention Jazz Jackrabbit, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom 2, Gex or GTA 2. I also remember I often invited my schoolmates to play some games since at the beginning of primary school only two of us have computers. It was really funny when only one of us played a game and the rest just watched but was still very excited.

I played all the games I was little! I could spend hours on them :) I think Dyna Blaster was my favourite one. I think should be here also Super Mario Bros. Thank you for link to Aladdin, surely I will play ;) I remember that I have these games on floppy disks. Your presentation summoned really nice memories of childhood.

I got my first PC at the age of 8 in 1999. Among the first games I played were Age of Empires 2, SimTower, The Sims, Worms series, GTA2, Heroes of Might and Magic 3. And the first game I've finished was the Resident Evil 2. I remember that most of my peers were afraid to even turn this game on.

When I was a child I played a lot of games. I loved it and I still miss that time actually. I played in such games as Rayman, Heroes, Worms, Super Mario, Hugo (a looot), Bomber, and a lot more I don't even have in mind at the moment.

Thanks, this article brings on pure nostalgia:) I had a Sega gaming console when I was a kid and enjoyed it a lot, I used to play a lot of games, among them are Contra, Battletoads, Battle City.

I remember playing DSJ on IT classes in Primary School. We had tournaments, and winner could play with our teacher (he was the best in this game). I remember trying to play first Call of Duty multiplayer on modem with speed up to 56kb/s. It wasn't my best multiplayer experience, I don't know what I was expecting;)

My favourite chlidhood game was bomberman. I playes it with my sister - I was using a, s, d, w keys, while she was using arrow keys.
I wasn't playing Deluxe Sky Jumping, because I haven't got it on my computer, it was only in day room at school and there was always a long queue to computer. It was same situation with Alladine game.
I see a great disparity time when these games were created. I think things like aladdin can we associate only with games on slot machines when we were at the seaside with parents. A more appropriate game for our time will be games like Gothic, Half-life, Morrowind and when we were very small we can play also on Pegasus or Nintendo (only when we when we had an uncle in America). I think it was a beautiful time for games because every game introduced something new to the games industry.

My favorite game of childhoods was contra. I played it with my dad. It was not easy because we had only 3 lives. But my dad changed the setting for   99 lives and then you could easily play. I also liked tanks. Because you could play with a friend. One was watching eagle and another one had to destroy tanks of the enemy. Moreover, I played the DSJ as well. When it comes to pegazus I have always wondered how does the gun which killed the ducks on the screen work.
When I was a kid, I played a lot of games, now I do it hardly ever. I really enjoyed playing “Captain Claw”, “Icy Tower”, “Jazz Jackrabbit” or “Heroes”.
Even though they were really simple, I miss that kind of games. Now I really have to download and play one of them :D

My favourite childhood game was Heroes of Might and Magic 3. I could spend whole days playing it with my friends. Even today I like to come back to this game and play if from time to time. I think there is some kind of magic in those old games.

I find the article too short you didn't mention croc or sonic which were popular, I've played deluxe ski jumping which was pretty fun but boring after some time. Bomber man was a great game at the times it offered multiplayer which few games only had at that time was worth mentioning also. You didn't name Mario the classic of all it was developed a little later but made the biggest boom. The last game you provided screen shots is worms which everyone knows, it was one of the top played games.
I think a lot of people used to play DSJ on IT classes in primary school. I also remember playing the first Prince of Persia and funny thing is that the IT teacher forbidden us to play it because there was pixelated blood.

But going even earlier my first gaming experience was on Pegasus. Me and my brother used to play it all the time. There was this cartridge with 5 games on it. It was called "The golden 5". It consisted of games like MicroMachines, BigNose the Caveman, BigNose Freaks Out, The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy and Ultimate Stuntman. Good times.

When I was child, I didn't played games too much. There was simple reason - I hadn't a computer. I just played on my friend's computer, but it wasn't too often.

Despite that my favourite game was Dyna. Wow! That was a game! When I saw screenshot I just smiled :D if it's possible now, I'll download it.
Of course, I know Deluxe ski jumping and Alladin from my childhood - I liked it (which child doesn't like games), but "my heart" belongs to Dyna.

Some years after playing Dyna, I got playstation 1 for my birthday. I was playing Crash Bandicoot a lot. I think it's one of the most interesting games. Of course, there are a lot of many technologicaly-advanced games (GTA, Wiedźmin etc.), but it's not as engaging as "childhood games".
Maybe there are too much games on the market and I don't appreciate it or I just grew up.

Although... I would play in Dyna or Crash :D

Wow, thanks for bringing great nostalgic emotions. Just a few days ago I bought 2 gamepads for this purpose. For playing retro games with my friends. I grew up in a poor family, so the most expensive console I ever owned was NES. With all these amazing titles like Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Snow brothers, Duck Hunt (yeah it was a magic for me, really). My uncle who was 10 years older than me once brought Sony Playstation 1 to our house (he borrowed it for 2 days). We literally were eating and sleeping in front of an old TV. You know… when you’re limited in time of playing a game - the game becomes more interesting and valuable. Princess Xena, Crash Bash, Spyro, Tarzan, Tekken3 were my favorite titles.
I realized that every family should have any kind of console at home. And parents should play with their kids. I’m really happy that my father was playing Contra, Jackal (NES) with me. And my mother was playing Ice Climber and Super Mario with me.

This post is a really good remainder of the past. I remembered the countless times when I was playing with friends the DSJ game. Moreover, we were preparing competitions at home and we managed to play really long hours in this game, sometimes all night until the morning! It was a great time.

Oh, it is so sweet that you have reminded us about that good childhood times:)
This long winter evenings - my mother hated our Sega and then the PC, because I was playing or watching my dad playing until I was getting the fever:)
Among the Sega games I loved Supermario, Contra and Duck hunting.
But when we had got the PC the choice was wider - many nights was spent with Alone in the Dark game - since that time I loved horrors. It was a DOS game and seemed to be so cool! A few years ago I even tried to play it again - oh, boy, now it looks so ugly and slow. Some sweet memories should stay in the past:)

But in the beginning my heart was taken by the simplest game Ski. Maybe somebody remembers that annoying yeti, that was trying to eat you. The game was very primitive but I loved it.

Then I also loved Aladdin and The Lion King. Everybody loved Disney and those games was colorful and so attractive. And of course I was playing tetris.

Later it was Wolf, Doom, Half Life, CS, but this is another story:)

Liero is great!!! My favourite game which we played at school during IT classes :D Unfortunately teacher wasn't prepared for lessions more advanced than setting margins in Word, or adding sum formula in Excel...
Oh yes, there are so many old good games I had lots of fun with. It's hard to point just a few, but I really played much of Warcraft 2, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and more. I still remember how I was even younger and my dad was showing me putt-putt, or he was playing first prince of persia himself :). If only I was born a few years before, I'm quite sure that I've wasted many more hours on all of that, as I started serious gaming after DOS era :).

For me it has always been Heroes 3. Best party game ever. Even now, years after I played it for the last time, I still remember some of the maps and treasure placements.

Other than that, one of my first games that I actually understood how to play was Kapitan Pazur.

I've played far too many video games in my childhood (and in my life in general), but i don't have my favourite one. I have to say that my friends and i used to play "Gusanos" a lot, a modern version of "Liero". Those games where you can play with your friends on one computer at the same time are simply the best. It's a shame that nowadays computer games can be played mainly through the Internet...
I'm the generation of first DOOM, Lotus, Carmageddon and Leisure Suit Larry. That was really old school games that made me learn English very fast. And there was times without Sound Cards was premium goods :) When I look at it now I don't know how I managed to play those games for so long. They look crappy now. Comparing to new productions like Battlefield 1 - hmm lot changed through the years.

P.S There is one Abandonware game I'm still playing today from time to time - WWF Wrestlemania and Mortal Kombat 2 - don't know why but they're really playable.

I remember playing Croc and Captain Claw for hours. Another game I was spending days with was Crash Bandicoot.
Sometimes I go back to these titles if I feel nostalgic and relive these adventures. I was never into sport games like Deluxe Ski Jumping. I was only interested in platform games.

I have played all of the games you mentioned. There were many games that I liked as a child, for example: Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter, Heroes of Might and Magic II, Golden Axe. I also remember playing Doom 2 in my dad's workplace against his colleague.

Yeah, I've learned a lot of history from gaming. But more so from Total War series. It encouraged me to read and find more knowledge. A a result I can visualize world map from any period of history with most political borders at the time.

My first game that I played was FIFA 98. Thanks to this game I became interested in football. Now football is my passion. And today I'm playing on FIFA 17. This is my 19 edition of this game which I play...it is amazing

This is really interesting topic. It's fun to remember our first computers and old games. Everything worked so slow back then. When I was a small child I was not interested in games that much, and the first computer game I remember was a Barbie game bought at a flea market. In that game, Barbie could choose clothes and makeup, and then she would go somewhere but the game always froze in the same moment and I played it for only one day.
I really liked to play Harry Potter games. I remember that you had to collect beans and the graphics were a little strange. I was afraid of the music and always turned off my speakers. I also remember that I had a problem with platforming and I often died because of it.
For a long time I liked to play a racing game, which looked more professional and I played it using the joystick. I was pretty good at this game and I wanted to be a rally driver when I grow up. I think that I also played some ski jumping, but not too often.
I never understood what was going on in the Minesweeper.

To me it were these three games: Aladdin, Dyna Blaster and Wolfenstein. These games have been filling out my childhood experience with playing computer games together with my older cousins :-) I remember that these games have been bringing new types of emotions because using computers was pretty new and modern at that time. It was higher level of adrenaline than in current games available.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
