Ukrainian cuisine

The Ukrainian cuisine is considered one of the most interesting and rich cuisines in the world. It enjoys honored popularity among other Slavs and many dishes, like vareniki and borscht, are now considered international. Thanks to the variety and perfection of its dishes, as well as due to their high taste quality, it has become widespread not only in neighboring countries but also far abroad.

Ukrainian national cuisine was formed in the 19th century and was already close to the Belarusian and Polish cuisines. Over time, the recipes were lost, but the traditions of the overseas cuisines entered the recipes of Ukrainian dishes. Kovbasa (sausage) and sauerkraut have Polish origins. Vareniki (dumplings) and holubtsi (stuffed cabbage) were originally imported from Turkey. Strudels, breaded meats, and desserts, such as cheesecake and tarts, were carried over from Austro-Hungarian times. Although Ukrainian dishes have origins from different countries, how they are prepared is uniquely Ukrainian.

All Ukrainian cuisine is considered being to some extent regional, because Western dishes differ from Eastern Ukrainian, and the influence of Hungarian cuisine on the Hutsul cuisine and Turkish cuisine on Bukovina can be traced decades ago. For example, borscht, which, it would seem, should be the same everywhere but depending on the region it is also prepared in its own way, and therefore it has a lot of varieties. But Ukrainian cuisine is united by several common principles of choosing food and cooking.

The Ukrainian cuisine cannot be confused with others because of its unique traditions. In a wide range of Ukrainian dishes, everyone will find something delicious even for those who have a discerning taste. As for the ingredients, in many popular Ukrainian dishes we can see lard, pork, beet, wheat flour and the abundant use of eggs. Lard is not only a favorite ingredient of many Ukrainians, but it is also considered a symbol of Ukrainian food. It is served as a separate dish in a smoked, salted, fried form, or used as a seasoning and fat base in other dishes.

Dishes of Ukrainian cuisine are diverse and extremely tasty. Ukrainian chefs and housewives cherish the traditions of cooking national dishes, passing them from family to family.

1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?
2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?

1. I can't say that I like it, simply because I don't have much experience with Ukrainian cuisine. Most likely I would like to try dishes that are similar to those we have in Poland, like dumplings for example and be able to notice differences myself.

2. My favorite cuisine is definitely Polish one. Each time I visit my grandma traditional food seems to be the greatest part of the visit. I love cucumber salad along with potatoes and good "schabowy". Dishes mostly considered as Polish ones would be - the one I mentioned already, as well as "bigos" or "pierogi" which can appear on the table in various types, depending on what somebody enjoys the most.

1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?

I've never tried real Ukrainian cuisine as i've never been to Ukraine but as You described in the article some of Ukrainian products are very similar to Polish ones, so after living my whole life in Poland i can most certainly tell that i'm not a very big fan of Polish cuisine. So by analogy i would say that i won't be keen on Ukrainian cuisine too, but I would like to try it in the future.

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?

I don't have my top 1 favorite cuisine but if i were to choose one of my most like it would've been German one. It's a lot of meat and fat, and tasty spices. My favorite dish from German cuisine is Currywurst, and it's a sausage heated in curry-tomato sauce. It's delicious!

I have never tried Ukrainian cuisine but after this article I definitely will. I can imagine how does it taste but I can't have opinion before try. I'm optimistic because I love every kinds of dumplings or similar dishes. Ukrainian cuisine looks very similar to Polish dishes, which I really enjoy.

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?
My favorite food though is Georgian cuisine like Chaczapuri or Chinkali or Hungarian cuisine where we can try Langosz or gulasz soup. I am fan of dishes with sos, chopped perfectly to bite size. Japanese cuisine like Sushi is also great. I'm foodie, I love to taste and eat every kind of food.

I am originally from Turkey and the holubtsi looks like something what we have called as "Dolma". But this is the general way of saying for this kind of meals, I guess you are only cooking it with cabbage and include meats inside, we cook it with different varieties for instance one with meat and one is without meat with olive oils for the vegetarians and we cook it with different vegetables such as (Quince, paprika, tomato, artichoke, pumpkin, eggplant and many many different vegatables.) It's yummy. so worth to try whatever holubtsi made it from :D

Details of Turkish way of cooking this meal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolma

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?

The Turkish ravioli is one of my favorite dish in the World. Honestly, for me there is nothing called as best, if a meaty meal meets with yogurt, I call it as the best.

1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?
I have never tried Ukrainian cuisine before, because my country doesn't have too many Ukrainian canteen, but one of my hobbies is eating delicious food, so I would like to try it someday. and I would like to try Ukrainian dumplings, because I like eating dumplings, especially with soup, I was very surprised the first time when I tried Polish dumplings, it was completely different from Chinese dumplings, so now I am curious about Ukrainian dumplings, also want to try Ukrainian traditional soup.

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?
My favorite one should be Cantonese cuisine, because I was born in a city called paradise of food--Canton. and the traditional dishes were called Dim Sum, maybe some people have already tried Dim Sum in Warsaw, anyway, they are not so authentic.
Although our traditional cuisine is very similar, I have little experience in Polish cuisine. But I hope that soon I will try the dishes you wrote about.
My grandmother also cooks traditional food and all my family loves it. I'm sure no restaurant food will taste better than my grandmother's :)
I hope you will find a Ukrainian dish that you will like :)

Your choice is very interesting. To be honest, I don't even know traditional German dishes. I only heard that they cooked delicious sausages. Although I'm not a fan of spicy food, I would like to try the dish you wrote about. Thank you, that opened something new from German cuisine and think not only for me.
Georgian cuisine is famous for its pastries and meat dishes. I already tried сhaczapuri, but not сhinkali. I want to try more Georgian dishes. But I don't like Japanese food. I think it's just not for me.
It's great that you're open to new dishes from all over the world and have a lot of experience.
It's great that everyone can tell something new and interesting about the traditional dishes of their country. We have similar dishes, but in each country they are slightly different (we add local products and seasonings, cooking method changes, etc.). And I think it's amazing.

Ukrainian traditional holubtsi is made from meat mixed with rice, and all this is wrapped in cabbage. During cooking, add tomatoes or tomato paste, grated carrots, sour cream, and bay leaf. It's not hard to cook yourself. I hope you will like Ukrainian holubtsi when you try them.
I hope you will like Ukrainian dumplings, although they are very similar to the Polish dumplings. There are several Ukrainian food restaurants in Warsaw, so I think you can try them there. But yes, you're right, they are completely different from Chinese dumplings.

I've never heard about Dim Sum. Can you explain what it's made of?

1. Honestly I've never tried real Ukrainian cuisinie but as you wrote it's very similiar to Polish. I'd like to try Vareniki the most because they are like Polish dumplings which I like very much.

2. My favourite cuisine is Italian and it's hard to say why I exactly like this one. I like all kind of pasta with tomato sauce, especially lasagne. Maybe this is the key why I love it so much. And of course who dosen't like pizza :)

1. I have never tried Ukrainian cuisine but as I can see it really is similar to Polish cuisine. I guess there are some differences with seasoning but overall it's quite the same. Hontesly, I don't like Polish food that much so I don't have anything I would like to try right now. Maybe if I see it in person I will be able to decide.

2. I don't have my favourite cuisine. I like a little bit of everything, I like for example only a few dishes from almost every cuisine.

I never tried Ukrainian cuisine as I never got the chance to visit this country but from what I've read some of your dishes are very similar.
I'd definitely want to try different varieties of borscht depending on your regions as it's my favourite soup.

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?

My favourite cuisine is Italian. I just love pizza and different types of pasta's.

I will for sure, thank you for sharing :)
I have never tried Ukrainian cuisine, but tomorrow it will change because I'm going for a bachelor party in Kiev. That's why your article is very useful for me. My favorite cuisine is definitely Asian cuisine. I love the most balance between all tastes and the use of raw fish and of course rice, which is my favorite source of carbohydrates. My favorite dishes are Sushi, Tonkotsu Ramen, Kimchi.

I am Ukrainian so I have definitely tried Ukrainian cuisine and of course I love it. I think because Ukraine was occupied by different countries and empires the cuisine is very diverse.
I don't have one favorite cuisine but I like some meals from Asian cuisines(curry, sushi, seafood), American(steaks and burgers), Italian(pasta) and some others. But the most important thing is that the food must be tasty.

1. Yes, I really like Ukrainian cousine, because it takes my memories from Ukrainie back. I have falled in love with their cousine since 2015. In 2015 I have been to Kijów for the first time. My favoirite dish is Varenyky - dumplings made with fillings.

2. I like Polish cuisine, because it is tasty and filling, but I am short thought with Polish cousine, because I eat it every time when I visit my parents. So when I eat out I prefer trying something new, for instance last week I have tried Gegorian cousine for the first time and I can reccomend it. When it comes to my taste spicy food really gets me and I can say that Mexican and Thailand food are the best for me.
1. I have never tried Ukrainian cuisine and I have no idea what it tastes like. And what dish do I want to try and why? Hard to say. Everything looks delicious, so I would probably try everything by piece.

2. My favorite cuisine is Italian and Asian. I love pasta and pizzas from Italian cuisine, and from Asia I like all Asian dishes, e.g. chicken with Thai basil (Pad Kra Pao Gai) or chicken with five flavors.

1. I have never tried it, so it's hard to say if I like it or not. I would like to try dishes inspired by turkish cuisine, as it seems more exotic to me.

2. I don't have one, I like trying different dishes from different cuisines. Right now my favourite one is georgian cuisine, but maybe soon I' ll get bored with it and look for something new.
1. I may have eaten Ukrainian cuisine in my life, but it was so long ago that I forgot. I think that all Slavic cuisines are very similar, certainly made in a different way, but similar. I've been to Russia much more often than in Ukraine, that's why I could definitely say more about their cuisine. When it comes to testing Ukrainian dishes, I think I would like to try vareniki (dumplings) and borscht (which certainly means 'barszcz' in Polish), because they would probably be similar to our Polish counterparts. I wonder how different the taste would be though.

2. I don't really have a favorite cuisine, but if I had to choose one, it's definitely Italian cuisine. Spaghetti, risotto, pizza, lasagne, ravioli and many more are the most famous traditional dishes - and also my favorites. They taste great, and if somebody somehow has never tried this cuisine before, do it as soon as possible.
1. I have had an opportunity to try it few times and it’s always have been a pleasure to my taste buds. I like it for its unique dishes with a strong taste. Like in every other cuisine, cooks should prepare it from high quality ingredients and with passion. When this rule is obeyed, dishes will always be delicious and balanced.

2. My favourite cuisine will always be the Italian one. It’s simple, tasty and has a variety of flavours. There are plenty of completely different regions, in each part of Italy you can find various dishes, ingredients and tastes. Pizza and pasta are the obvious associations but the rare ones are arancini, cannolo and different kinds of cold cuts and meat dishes.
1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?
I didn’t eat any or at last I’m not aware of this and I’m not to interested to try any at this moment
2. What is your favourite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?
I would say that is Polish cuisine because I grew up on them and Italian cuisine like lasagne, pizza, spaghetti and and some individual dishes from others cuisine.
1. I don't think that I ate any Ukrainian dish before, but I would like to try all of them. I love eating, no matter what. I won't know if I like it if I don't eat it
2. I think I don't have favourite cuisine, but I really like our Polish cuisine - schabowy, mielony or żurek, love it! But recently I tried ramen for the first time and I have the feeling that I could eat it everyday
Mykola Suprun said…
Yes, of course, being Ukranian myself, I grew up on it.
Not one county in particular, but I like eastern food, and especially the Chinese one. It is so much different from what I used to but extremely peculiar and diverse. But I would say that I would prefer it to everything else. At the end of the day, there is often ignorance, not tastes that prevents someone from appreciating some type of cuisine.
I was waiting for someone to write that Italian cuisine is his/her favorite because it's my favorite cuisine too :) I like everything about Italian food. Starting with different variations of tomato pastes and ending with the most delicious dishes. I'm glad I found a like-minded person)

1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?
To be honest, I have no experience with Ukrainian cuisine, but this article shows that it has a lot in common with other Slovenian cuisines. By similarities, I mean rich usage of meat that completely disqualify this cuisine for me, as I am vegetarian since pretty early childhood. Nevertheless, I could try vareniki if it is stuff with cheese, mushrooms or fruits.

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?
I don't have favorite cuisine, but I like Arabic and Asian species, so India and Morocco's cuisines are fairly good. Generally, if some dish doesn't include meat in any form and doesn't look like brought from laboratory it is fine for me. :)
There are several restaurants of Ukrainian cuisine in Warsaw. I think there you can try the main dishes, including borsch. But if you want to try different variations of the same dishes, then I invite you to visit Ukraine. This is a good way not only to see new places but also to eat traditional food.
I am very glad that my article was useful. I hope that you will try a lot of delicious Ukrainian dishes and share your impressions not only with us but also with your friends and family. After all, it is best to share something new with someone when you have already tried it yourself.
I agree with you. I think the origin of the dish is not very important. The main thing is that you like this food. It is unnecessary to have one favorite cuisine. It is much better to enjoy delicious dishes from different countries because each dish will have something special, something that distinguishes it from the rest.
I have never tried Asian cuisine, but I would like to try some dishes. I like chicken dishes with different seasonings. So I think the chicken with Thai basil you wrote about will appeal to me. Thank you for the new information :)
I totally agree with you. The Italian cuisine is excellent, and I'm glad I found another one like-minded person. I advise you to find a place where you can taste Ukrainian cuisine and remember this taste again. I'm sure you won't regret it)

1. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to try Ukrainian cuisine or maybe i tried it without knowledge that it was Ukrainian, so it's hard for me to say that i like it or not and why. I definitely want to try "bliny" ( I assume it's traditional Ukrainian cushine dish)

2. I love Polish cuisine a lot, but when I am the responsible one to cook something I tend to do it at low cost and effort so Im switching to Italian cuisine because there's nothing easier to cook than simple pasta.
I also love Italian food, but I've never heard of arancini and cannolo. Interestingly, you might like something very much, but you still won't know everything about it. But there will be someone who will tell you something new about it. Thanks to you, I learned about new dishes of my favorite cuisine, and now I want to try them. Thank you for the new information :)
Although now I live in Poland and to be honest, I have tested none of those Polish dishes that you have listed. Reading your comments on this article, it's not the first time I've seen you mention these dishes. So I think I should try them out soon.
In Ukrainian cuisine, there are many dishes with meat, but there are also traditional dishes vegetarians can eat that. I found a website (https://destinations.com.ua/fine-dining/top-10-ukrainian-meatless-dishes), where you can read about these dishes. I hope that someday you will try these dishes and you will like them.
"Bliny" are mostly related to Russian cuisine. But the cuisine of the Slavic countries is very similar, so I think you can find a similar dish in Poland.

1. I've never had an opportunity to try typical Ukrainian food. However, as I read, many dishes are quite similar to ours, probably only visually, so I can try just a bit to imagine how they could taste. I would like to try real Ukrainian borscht to compare it with Ukrainian borscht which is served in Poland. Also Ukrainian version of our dumplings could be something interesting to me.

2. I'm a general food lover so I don't have a favorite one. I like many dishes from different cuisines but I really love our Polish. Especially traditional dishes like pork chop or pierogi/dumplings. There’s nothing better than traditional fried carp on Christmas Eve. On the other hand I also like Italian pizza and pastas or American burgers.

Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?

I like Ukrainian cuisine by hundred percent. Especially Salo. It's because I grew up with this cuisine. But, as the article says, there are many different regional dishes that I have not tried. In particular, I would like to try Western Ukrainian cuisine, where influence of Hutsul cuisine was bigger (they just use a lot of meat in their dishes)

What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?

It is difficult to single out any special kitchen. Any kitchen has several incredibly delicious dishes. In general, I like to eat what I like and sometimes try something new
1. Yes I love Ukrainian cuisine very much because there are variety of meal and it's tasty. I have tried Borscht,Chicken Kiev, Potato pancakes, Vareniki, Okroshka, Syrniki , Holodets and all of them were delicious!
I would say that Ukrainian, Russian cuisine is partially the same.
2. I am a lover of Uzbek cuisine. I come from this country. Surely you also heard or saw Uzbek restaurants in Ukraine, Poland and other countries many times. If you heard then we have dishes called Pilaf. This is a very popular dish in all of Central Asia and even in the west. I advise you to visit the Uzbek restaurant wherever you are because there you will be fed very tasty and satisfying!

1. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried Ukrainian cuisine yet, but now, right after reading that blog entry I’m sure I will try it anytime soon. All of mentioned national Ukrainian dishes look really tasty, but if I had to choose only one to try first, I would definitely go for vareniki. I’ve read that they are very similar to polish dish called „pierogi”, which I truly love; so I would like to try vareniki and spot the difference between them and pierogi; either way I’m pretty sure they are delicious.

2. I love Italian cuisine, this cuisine contains all of the best ingredients: tomatoes, many kinds of cheese, seafood and pasta. That’s why it taste so good in my opinion. I could only eat italian pasta for the rest of my life. Italian cuisine is famous for pizza and pasta served with different variations of sauce. Italians also have their traditional dessert called „tiramisu”, it’s a cake made of sponge soak with coffee, and mascarpone.
1. Unfortunately, although I have visited Ukraine before, I never had any opportunity to try the proper dishes of Ukrainian cuisine. I do like dumplings very much, so I would like to try the Ukrainian version of them and compare.

2. My favourite cuisine is the Italian one. Pepperoni pizza wins with any other dish in the world. Also, from time to time I like to eat a lasagne or pasta.

1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?
I like the Ukrainian cuisine very match! Cause of its variety, originality and old history. Borscht, for example, already was known in Trypillya culture (5-6 thousand years ago), and it was accepted by Eastern Slavs. Most of Ukrainian dishes are very calorie. To cook them, u use a lot of components and cooking, consists of several methods of heat treatment, that’s why they are rich in proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Dishes are very tasty although, because of supplements, that are adding to the main dish. For example, sour cream, it is added almost to every dish.
2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?
Every cuisine has its individual features. And to say that some cuisine is your favorite, u need to understand what food do you prefer. As for me, I prefer fish instead of meet; cooked in any way – fried, smoked, dried, soup with fish, salad with fish…
I don’t know why I like it …. Maybe I was a cat in my previous life)
1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?

As I am ukrainian I have tried ukrainian cuisin. Of course, I love it, very much. When I try something from ukrainian cuisin I always remember y childhood, when my granmother cooked some delicious dishes and we all together was siting by the table and talking.

2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?

I like Italian cuisin. Pizza, lazania, pasta... Everything is delicious. Also I like Georgian one. Chinkali, some great steaks.
Even a Ukrainian may not always be fully familiar with traditional Ukrainian cuisine :) I also would like to try traditional Western Ukrainian food, as it differs from what I used to eat.

2. I really like Italian cousine. Its dishes are simple and made of simple ingredients.
I love pizzas, spaghetti, lasagne and many others. I've also been in Italy and tried them there.
It even slipped my mind that tiramisu is also a traditional Italian dish until I read your comment :) I cooked it several times with my mother, using true Italian products. And although it was not very easy, it turned out delicious. Thank you for reminding me of that.

My favorite cuisine may be Spain or Italy in Europe. Since I am Turkish, they are included in the Mediterranean cuisine. Especially the Spanish meats are delicious.

But still I am a fan of eating fast foods, just that you don’t have to waste time cooking something.
1. I don't have much experience with Ukrainian cuisine. The only dish I remember is Ukrainian borscht. I really like this dish, my mother prepared it according to a traditional Ukrainian recipe.

2. My favorite cuisine, besides Polish of course, is Mexican cuisine. I love burritos, cheese quesadille with chicken and corn, nachos and all types of tortillas. This kitchen suits me very much because it is rich in spices, products, flavors and colors which makes it so tasty no only for me but for many people around the world.

Unfortunately, in Warsaw there are not many Ukrainian restaurants in which dishes reflect the true taste of this cuisine.
my favorite cuisine is definitely italian cuisine. it came from that my grandmother spent over 30 years in Italy and when she returned she cooked all these delicious Italian dishes. I learned to cook them myself and they are the basis of my nutrition on a daily basis. I think this kitchen is very valuable for our health because it is a Mediterranean diet that includes healthy fats such as olive oil and a lot of vegetables. my favorite dish is spaghetti and other pastas to which I add fresh tomatoes and sprinkle with real Italian Parmesan cheese.

As for me, food should be helpful and healthy, it should fill human with energy not vice versa.
1. Do you like the Ukrainian cuisine and why? If you have not tried Ukrainian cuisine, what dish would you like to try first and why?
I haven't tried it yet. A lot of we have in poland but i would really enjoy some local cousine.
2. What is your favorite cuisine and why? What are the traditional dishes of this cuisine?
I really like italian cousine because of it's freshness and simplicity. Pastas, pizza, seafoods.
1. I have never tried Ukrainian cuisine, so i just can't say if i like it. My friend from Ukraine told my that theirs cuisine is similar to ours so i think that i will enjoy it.
I would like to try dumplings, it's one of my favourite dishes in Poland, so it would be fun to try if they are as good as ours or better!

2. It's really hard question to answer because all cusine from the whole word has delicious dishes, which i love to eat. For the purpose of the question i will chose chinese cuisine. The rice and vegetables with their sauce and spices is one of the best kitchen adventures i had in my life. Peking duck is one of their traditional dish, which suprised me with unexpected taste.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
