Week 8 [04.12 - 10.12.2017] How to spot a liar?

How to spot a liar?

English wikipedia quotes that:
"A lie is a statement used intentionally for the purpose of deception. The practice of communicating lying is called lying, and a person who communicates a lie may be termed a liar. Lies may be employed to serve a variety of instrumental, interpersonal, or Psychological functions for individuals who use them."

http://fb-timeline-cover.com/covers/tv-shows/Dr-House-Everybody-Lies.html

Everyone lies – it’s one of Doctor House's favourite quotes. It is hard to disagree with him. Everyone lies and it does not dependent on age. Some people suffer from pathological lying (it is a behaviour of habitual or compulsive lying). We can say we are surrounded by liars. That's how the world  is constructed.  Rather, we are not able to change this situation. However, we can try  but how?!

I encourage you to watch the video and have fun!  : )

Questions:
1. Do you notice when  people lie  to you during  conversations? What behaviours betray them?
2. Do you think a lie always comes out?
3. Do you use white lies? If yes, in what situations? Why do people so often use white lies?

Very interesting article. It reminds me that many people are compulsive liars, not because they like to lie but they do it unconditionally and oftentimes unconsciously. What is more, rare occurence they do lie just because they can get away with this. This thing doesn't need to be neccesarily negative.

I'm totally bad in that case. I belive people to their first lie. Then I have the impression that someone lie always.
I think that lie sooner or later will come out. In my small and shameful experience this always happens.
In my opinion everybody use white lies. In my case i lie to my mum. Mum:
What time did you go to sleep? Me: Oh really! Not so late! «I really watched the series up to four». But she is then peaceful.

I'm good liar. but I can also recognize how someone is lying. If a person I don't know well is lying, I probably I will not recognize that someone lie, but if someone can not lie, it's easy to get to know it. Liars are often tangled in their own lies, so they do not always go out of the lie
Spotting a liar can be very easy if our person is inexperienced, but also very hard if he mastered lying to perfection. If somebody is just lying without actual preparation, it's easy most of the time.

Personally I try to avoid lying. I'll rather change a topic or in other way avoid the question rather than telling something that isn't truth. Sometimes it's not possible and "small lie" can actually benefit both parties, but I don't believe that it can stay hidden for a longer while. We're only humans and we're doing mistakes - getting confused in our own lies eventually will happen.

The people's expressions will show it all. a person is lying or telling the truth.
Everyone at least once in life lied and I am no exception. But I won't say that I'm a good a liar..
The lie always leads to problems. You should understand when to should lie or tell the truth.

There was similar article about lying so I will repeat some facts. It’s not difficult to notice that someone is lying but only If you know this person very well. There are lot of factors that may help you to spot the liar. I’m sometimes successful in spotting liars. Just observe someone’s body language, facial expression and things like this. Honestly I have to say that lie doesn’t always have to come out but in my opinion that’s because of the purpose of this lie. Some of them have to come out because are harmful but there are also white lies which sometimes doesn’t come out and it’s normal. Sometimes I use white lies but only not to hurt someone feelings.

1. I do often spot lies, not always though. People who are not good at lying tend to get another pitch of their voice, move their hands more than usually, get red or pale faced, or they just prove their lies to not be true by saying something contrary. Generally if someone is behaving oddly, then it's suspicious. I tend not to say anything, they might have a good reason, and if not, it usually gets more embarrassing for the liar if you reveal the truth at a later point, when the lie gets more advanced - i.e. more fun to the person revealing it.

2. A good lie made up by a person with IQ above average does not have to come out. On the other hand, no matter how good it is, everything can happen if you're unlucky. The thing is, if you really want a lie to last, you have to give it a lot more thought than it's usually worth it. You really have to think about every possible event and outcome.

3. Of course. In general, when it's for a greater good, I go for it. I do hate some of them though, like "I'm almost there" while the person in question hasn't even showered yet. I believe there is an especially awful part of hell prepared for these people.
When you know someone well it’s easy to detect a lie. Sometimes it’s very easy - my brother bursts into laughter in the middle of the sentence. When a lie is big and not well thought through it usually comes out, but those little white lies? Rarely. I use white lies when it’s not a big deal and it would end up hurting someone I care about. I think a lot of people use white lies in similar situations.

I know it's you, Igor!!! Make your presentation for English classes. The deadline is on Wednesday!!!

It's true, sometimes a white lie is better. You gave a great example. Thanks fot that your mother is calm about you. Bravo!
Unknown said…
Wow! Please tell me what techniques of lying do you use?
Unknown said…
Sometimes lying is better than saying truth. The world is constructed like this. You need to know when lie and when tell the truth.
Unknown said…
Thank you for your comment Łuaksz. You have right, not every lie is bad! Sometimes small lie can benefit both sides.
Unknown said…
In my opinion people are good liars. It is easier to catch a liar when you know this person. Much heavier is when you meet someone for the first time.
-"Everybody lies" - but i'm not :) Yea,i'm kidding, i used to lie when i was a child, but trying to not do it nowadays. When somebody lies and do it rarely, he/she would not be calm and this kind of nervous behaviour is easy to notice.
Yeah, i'm 1000% agreed that lie is always coming out and it doesn't matter when it would be.
White lie is not the reason to avoid catastrophy, but can be helpful sometimes. As for me, i hate lie and people who lie, so there is no difference between "white" or "black" lie for me

The situation from answer number 3 is very frequent... Something like that happened to me. Once I was a lying party and once someone lied to me.
Unknown said…
A lie has no legs! The truth will always come out. ;)
Unknown said…
Thank you for your comment Łuaksz. What white lie have you used lately?
Unknown said…
Another presentation about lying?
I can't recognize when person I don't know is lying. Some people are so good that I can't recognize it even when I know them well. I have friends who lie often in the way that I belive that. I sometimes have impression that they believe what they say. People say that lie alwayas comes out but we know that not all lies do. Sometimes it's a good idea to lie for others. It is true that we live in the world of lies.
Unknown said…
We didn't agree to duplicate this topic... I'm not lying!!!
Foodocado said…
It's easier to find out that somebody lies when you know that person. I don't think I am a goo liar. I feel awful when I have to lie to someone. That's why I don't do this very often. I believe if we are afraid of telling the truth it's better not to tell about it, than lie. The truth always come out...
Unknown said…
Thanks a lot for this interesting video. Well, sometimes I manage to descry a lying person due to his or her behaviour. First of all, this person often touches his/her ear, rubs the face and chest. Then, it might be visible how this person tries not to catch your look etc etc..
Not really, cuz some people are great liars and they manage to hide the truth and, on the other hand, I am not into lie detection. Some lies may exist for years and you wouldn't suspect even.
Yes, I use the co called white lies, but try to be very cautious with it cuz sometimes it has the same results as a traditional lie
Vladlen Kyselov said…

Lies is the art of someone doing it well someone is bad and that's why it's hard to understand whether a stranger is lying or not. After all, it may be that he intentionally shows that he is lying to realize a goal.

Do you use white lies? If yes, in what situations?
Unknown said…
Wow. Thank you for that comment. Your theory is really creepy.
Unknown said…
Which white lie you did you use the last time?
Unknown said…
I can't see when somebody lies. Almost everthing people say to me I accept as truth. I even can't imagine somebody lying. I do it sometimes, but don't know why would somebody want to lie to me. I think a lie almost always comes out. In some situations not, for example when it is not important lie and I forget what somebody said to me.
Magdalena Popek said…
I usually don't care if someone's lying to me, unless we are more than just colleagues. I just don't like lying about why someone didn't do something they were supposed to do. I don't think a lie always come out. First of all sometimes a lie is so insignificant no one even cares if it comes out or not. Yes, I sometimes do white lies, but it's really not often.
Jakub Lisicki said…
I often notice people lying to me or others during the conversations, I just not always care about it. I sometimes try to find the reasons behind why they would lie, unless they are pathological liars. What makes it pretty obvious that they lie is them being either too serious or not serious at all, change of the voice tone, unnatural hand gestures, blinking too often - there are rally many factors to determine how likely it is that they lie. It's too complicated to explain it in just a few sentences.
The lie does not always come out. It's just a way to scare people off telling lies. What would be the point of lying if it always comes out?
I don't see that white lies are as bad as some other ways of lying. I tell those lies, because I don't want others to worry about me. I guess that many people may tell them because of similar reasons.
Most of the time i use white lies to comfort people or not to give out my own opinion on the matter if i feel that it might be better not to do so. Its hard to spot a liar if its the first time we have interaction wit them, but when it comes to friends and relatives its trivial to do so. Body movements of the liar are most obvious ones that make him vulnerable to spotting, next is non connecting facts in the story followed by impossible chances. When it comes to lies i do believe there are perfect lies , ones that we will never uncover as such.
Unknown said…
1) I do sometimes see when others lie. As to what are the things i see when they do i'll keep it a secret.
2) Not unles you remember clearly what you said, why you did it, to whom you said it and informed for example 3rd party to cover for you.
3) Yes i use them. Mainly to comfort people.
I am quite naive, so it is hard for me to spot a liar. I heard that average human lies 3 times every 10 minutes. I do not lie to often because I consider it will always come out. Sometimes I use white lies when my mom is abroad and I do not want to worry her.
I used to lie a lot, I played a different character each time I met someone new I knew I might never meet again, and sometimes I catch myself doing it still. I don't know why, I love making voices and writing characters, maybe I just wish I could experience how it is to be a different person? But it is deceptive and I would like to stop doing it altogether. It's just amazing to me how automatic it is.
Unknown said…
I remember we had an article about lying some time ago, but anyway- I can't tell if I could notice if some random guy is lying to me- If he wasn't doing anything unusual or exaggerating his moves, it would be hard to tell. I don't think that lie always comes out- it depends on the context anyway, as we can compare the lie to a security system- it is as good as the amount of time needed to verify(i.e crack) it.
Of course nobody is going to take actions to prove that you came to the college building by a private helicopter, because everyone knows there are no helipads in the vicinity of it, so its a cheap lie everyone knows about almost instantly.
Also, people don't like ones who often lie, even the simple ones, as it just makes them look like "stupid BS'ers".
When it comes to morality of white lies- well.. It depends what we are lying. Sometimes it's good not to tell the terminally ill that they are dying, so they can be happy during their last moments. On the other hand, people tend to lie to themselves- homeopathy industry and other companies making pills from 100% of powdered sugar wouldn't be this big if those lies were that morally bad...
1. Do you notice when people lie to you during conversations? What behaviours betray them?
Sometimes it is all about little words or change of sentence through the time.
2. Do you think a lie always comes out?
No it is just a credible way to hide it and it will stay this way.
3. Do you use white lies? If yes, in what situations? Why do people so often use white lies?
Sometimes especially in work it is more of a PR thing and not saying everything it has to be said.
If the person who is lying is good at it i think it's almost impossible to notice that he's not telling us the truth. As i said before when the liar is good at lying I think lie won't come out. Everybody lie! We usually lie (me either) to gain something like avoiding consequences. For example i always lie when my girlfriend ask me how she looks in that dress. :)
Unknown said…
When someone tries to lie to me, I can feel it. How do I recognize that they are not being honest with me? People tend to avoid the eye contact, they spin nervously, it's visible that they have something to hide. Basing on my experience I know that a lie sooner or later comes to the light. Even if the truth is just hidden because of a good purpose, people find out it. The most often white lie is used by people who don't want to hurt another person. I suppose that in this group there are for example doctors who sometimes don't tell their patients the whole diagnosis to not take away the hope for a better recovery. Sometimes I also lie, but usually when I want to surprise someone.
Unknown said…
Average human lies 3 times every 10 minutes... Sad true.
Unknown said…
Thanks for interesting video posted.
1. It depends on how good the liar is 😊. I think that everyone can spot lies when conversating with poor liar as such people cannot use proper techniques to make their lies unnoticeable, e.g.: they cannot control their voice and start talking very quickly or shaking their hands. In such a case I can easy say if the person is lying or not. But when it comes to let’s say “professional” liars e.g.: salesmen, it is hard for me to spot particular lies as those people are trained to control their emotions and use other tricks to make you believe them. Of course, I am aware that they do not tell the truth so I do not believe them in general.
2.In my opinion lying does not pay off in general. Lie maybe will not always come out entirely, but they always affect you in this way or another.
3. I use white lies from time to time especially about not serious issues and when it can save me or other people big problems or feeling uncomfortably. However, as I mentioned above I am trying to avoid using white lies because even such small dishonesties can have serious consequences in the future. I think that the main reason for people using white lies is that they are handy and do not seem to hurt anybody rather make you or other people feel better.

Do you think sometimes a white lie is better than true?

I usually notice when people lies in important things. If people lies in important things they are show their nerves. I think that lies always comes out and I have even a problem with usign a 'white lies' which you mentioned in your post. I feel a guilty too much and I confess that I have lied.

Sometimes I notice that someone is liar, usually when they don't know what to say when I am asking them about details.
I think that lie always comes out, maybe not today, not tomorrow, but someday. If you are asking about "white lies" I am okay with it. Sometimes it is better choice.
Unknown said…
I know what you feel. You're a good man Tomasz.
Unknown said…
yeah, asking for details is good idea! You can easily recognize the liar in this way.
Unknown said…
I don’t always notice if someone lies to me, but as to what betrays them it’s usually being nervous or they’re lost in the lie and can’t keep one version of it.
It really depends on the lie if it comes out, but I don’t think every single lie will come out at some point.
Sometimes it’s just easier to use a white lie than explain someone something or the subject is just not important enough.
Unknown said…
Thank you for your comment Kamil.

I can agree with you Marcin.

I do agree that everybody lies. Mainly because they are afraid of been judged in some ways, to avoid the responsibility of their actions or to avoid the unpleasant dialogue. I can't say I could always spot a liar, but I mostly manage to do it. Not because I am so talented in recognizing the mimic changes, but you just feel it, maybe intuition, maybe some skill, that you have got during your life.
I don't think that lies always comes out, but in my case it always does)) I am not a good liar, so I always try to avoid it. Usually I lie to my parents when I am ill and don't want them to worry about it. But I still think it's a white lie. Of course, I am not very proud of it, but I think it's a better way. Sometimes I lie not to offend people. Or when I don't want to go to some party and I just say that I am busy with my studies - I could say the truth, but then everyone will think that I am not social enough:D ok ok, I should tell how it is.. But everybody lies;)

To spot a lie you have to pay attention and know how to listen. For me it wasn't that important to spot a layer but recently I started to play game called "Mafia" which actually based on finding a lairs and the easyest way to do that is to listen to what other person is saying and notice some inconsistencies. We are social animals and white lie is required from us if we want to be social so if you want to play a game you have to fallow the rules.
Yes, I often notice that people are lying. At such times they make a poker face and try to convince you that they are right. Yes, lies sooner or later will manifest them. A person cant remember all that he was lying. And often a liar speaks different things to another. In the end, it will pop up. And this is not very pleasant. I think white lies are necessary. All our childhood consists of white lies. In communication with adults, sometimes it is also worth using. A world where everyone talks to each other the truth cant exist. This is a very terrible and brutal utopia.

Not always, but in most cases - yes.
Because sometimes it is the only way to avoid/solve some problems.

sometimes i can recognize when people liying but the most times i bilnd trust in few this and from few persons. I try to belive in everything what things my friend or girlfriend but when strangers want to say me something what i have to trust i try to check that infromating and dont trust in blind.
Yes, I often notice when people lie to me. In most cases , look and voice betray them. But, overall, it depends on a certain person.
I don't think a lie always comes out. But, the bitterest truth is better than the sweetest lies.
Yes, I use white lies rarely, only to avoid some stupid and small problems.

I can agree with you. Usually the bitterest truth is better than the sweetest lies.
1. It is not possible to recognize a liar any time he lies. And many times I found out I had been cheated just after long time. But more older and experienced I become, less such situations take place. I can see people’s behavior, not looking into my eyes while talking to me, and then sometimes I am able to notice bad intensions. Generally I believe that everything we do to the others, will come back to us sooner or later. So I do not insist on the knowledge of every case of having something to do with a cheater. He will meet his justice.

2. No, the lies not always comes out. But for me it is much easier just to say the truth than a lie, because this way I don’t have to keep nothing different unreal stories in my mind, only true ones.

3. This is a controversial issue. I try to avoid even this kind of lie, for the reasons I mentioned above. Honesty is a value of its own, and apart from that I don’t want to charge my memory too much. But sometimes telling truth can kill something valuable. In really exceptional situations I would accept white lies (real danger, need to protect human’s life, children problems).

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
