Week 8 [04.12 - 10.12.2017] Free ear massage via the Internet or ASMR

It's been a long day, hasn't it? You probably feel tired, sleepy. Or, maybe, you have problems with sleep. In any case, I hope you'll find the topic of this post helpful.

Have you ever heard of ASMR?
Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a term used for an experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine.

In a nutshell, ASMR is something that comforts and relaxes you, help fall asleep, calm down or just get goosebumps. There are visual and audial asmr, but the second type is more popular.
ASMR are videos on YouTube in which people make different sounds: tap on items, scratch them, whisper from ear to ear, eat, make mouth sounds, read books, etc.

ASMRtists (people who create audiovisual material) usually use binaural/stereo mics. This means that the sound in your ears is la little bit different. For example, ASMRtist can whisper to a left microphone and the sound in your left ear will be louder. This creates the impression of 3D sound.

There are some examples of triggers:

  • Listening to a softly spoken or whispering voice
  •  Listening to quiet, repetitive sounds resulting from someone engaging in a mundane task such as turning the pages of a book
  • Watching somebody attentively execute a mundane task such as preparing food
  • Loudly chewing, crunching, slurping or biting foods, drinks, or gum
  • Receiving altruistic tender personal attention
  • Initiating the stimulus through conscious manipulation without the need for external video or audio triggers

There are some examples of ASMR. You don’t have to watch these videos from beginning to end and all of them. Just choose the one you like and watch a minute or two. But do it only at home and only while wearing headphones.

There is also something called mukbang.

Mukbang (or muk-bang; Korean: 먹방; meokbang; lit. "eating show") is an online audiovisual broadcast in which a host eats large quantities of food while interacting with their audience.

It reminds ASMR in some way, but in mukbang videos, people only eat and not necessarily quiet. Just try to paste into the search on YouTube "mukbang" and you'll be surprised at the number of mukbang videos and views on them.

There are several theories why it's popular. Some argue that it helps satisfy the desire for the food. Others say that the Koreans (they started to make such videos) used to eat with someone, not alone. But those Koreans who live alone feel lonely when eating alone, so they watch mukbangs.

  Questions:

  1. Have you ever heard of or listened to ASRM? How do you feel about it and do you find it relaxing?
  2. Why, in your opinion, so many people watch Mukbang videos?

Comments

We're living in the world where people are marrying anime characters, I don't see anything weird in watching mukbang videos anymore, the world is fu**ed up as it is :). Personally I heard about it and even tried it a while back, maybe it did help a little, but not that much. I guess my brain launched specially created anti-placebo effect that actually tried hard to make me believe it doesn't work. Perhaps I'll try someday, but not today :). Thanks for interesting presentation.

Yeah, but these examples of muckbang are not the most strange you can find. There are also videos about girls licking bananas and watching into cameras; guys with makeup eating sausages. Even children do muckbangs. And I saw one video about a boy who ate vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, carrot, asparagus) and he liked it. It was funny.
So, you think people watch it to not to be hungry?

I have never heard about ASRM and I have never heard it. It is very strange for me. maybe it is good way to relax but I prefer to do other things. I have no idea why people watch Mukbang movies. Now people watch different strange things for example people watch how other people play games they can't play and they pay them.

I first encountered ASMR when I was searching for the laptop cleaning products a couple of years ago. I was puzzled when instead of the usual laptop dismantling and compressed air cleaning I saw an attractive girl making keyboard rubbing sounds. I thought it was some kind of a fetish :D

As for Mukbang, I remember it gaining popularity due to The Diva. Like many things coming from Asia, I must say that its popularity is beyond my comprehension :)

Once my friend showed me this. Felt wierd, unnatural, could even say disturbing. Never again. Why people watch girls in the internet? Go open twitch.tv and watch any IRL themed streamer:) phimosis audience...
Unknown said…
Thank you for the video. Yeah, I can imagine this. The way she cleans her laptop is very relaxing, though. However, not everyone can clean their gadgets for a half of hour, she's so patient.
I remember the first time I saw ASMR. "Hey, girl, what are you doing with this brush, why are you whispering those silly things so close to the mic?"
Unknown said…
By the way, there are a lot of ASMR on the Twitch. I've checked once :)
Unknown said…
I don't know what games you've written about, but it sounds similar to gamer's letsplays. Except for paying for this, but the audience watches the advertisement, so.
Maybe, it's ok to be a little bit strange and watch strange things. Otherwise, the world would be so normal and boring, wouldn't it?
I have listened to ASRM twice or 3 times I don't know. The feeling during listening to this is interesting and funny but for me it quickly becomes boring.
I have never heard about mukbang but during today's dinner I won't eat alone :D
It's a little bit weird but probably you are right and some people dont want to be alone during dinner.

I haven't heard of ASMR. But I doubt this can help people. It is strange to like mukbang videos. But I think that many poeple like watching this kind of videos, because most of them are chinese.
Unknown said…
I know what ASMR is, but I don't like it. I think it's distracting rather than helpful in concentration.
Mukbang streamers probably eat online to earn money, because they have viewers that send donations. However I have no idea why normal people watch this. Maybe only Asians know it.

I have never heard about ASMR but now... it is very strange for me. I have no idea why people watch Mukbang videos. It can be relaxing? Seriously? For normal people?
Never heard about ASMR before neither i stumbled in those kind of videos before today. Seems like it is just concept of people enjoining different kind of background noises, for various reasons. Most of us probably dont realise we do the same , for example i need sm1 to talk in the background while im trying to sleep- otherwise in silence my hearing focuses first on heartbeat and other body sounds only to focus on every single abnormality later on, i will hear every crack in the house, water flowing in the pipes, and ill pickup various noises from outside the house and thats disturbing. Unfortunately not as much disturbing as ASMR performed like in the videos ive seen today. Why so many people watch those videos - i would describe it simply as a fetish, but dont we all have them?:)
Why, in your opinion, so many people watch Mukbang videos?
Unknown said…
Never heard of it and i don't really care. I consider it yet another fetish of humanity.
I think that people who listen to such things are either bored af or just some sort of fetishists. Whatever floats your boat i guess.
Unknown said…
Yes, it's kinda boring to watch how someone tries to close the bottle for an hour or cleans laptop for so long :)
Unknown said…
But I've read a lot of comments on the YouTube that ASMR helps people. Some of them had insomnia, some had anxiety. And with ASMR they feel better. I was surprised by the fact it can really help and it does something, that it's not only for the entertainment.
Unknown said…
Yes, Asian have other culture that is hard to understand living in the Europe. But Americans and Europeans film and watch mukbangs too.
Unknown said…
Yes, why not? It's not the strangest thing on the Internet.
Unknown said…
I know some people who can't fall asleep without TV. And my father is among them. It's interesting that Tv works for you, but ASMR doesn't.
I can't tell why other people watch it. Maybe they really don't like to eat alone. But I watch mukbang when I'm on a diet and can't eat something. It's strange, but it works for me so good. And not only those videos but just watching pictures with cakes or something like that does a great job too.

Bored or hungry :)
There are a lot of fetishes in the world, all of them contain one thing in them - pleasure. For me the reality is always better than any kind of virtual play. So as long as someone is satisfied with it, it's good. For me it is a no go and complete waste of creativity and useless. It's better to eat something good or rub a pretty girl ears and neck or anything you want to :) Other way is just a fantasy :)
Unknown said…
It is an interesting topic and I will try it when I will finish commenting articles on our blog. :) I don't understand why people watch Mukbang videos. For me it is not interesting at all and even it is a disgusting.

Never heard about it, but I'm not surprised it comes from Japan- it is known for many strange things (and I'm not talking just about tentacle videos right now). I don't find it relaxing, as the first video is too high-pitched and distracts me, and the second one.. Well, it's just weird- If someone likes to watch someone else touching silicone ears, then I don't really much care about it.
Maybe people watch those Mukbang videos because they are lonely? Or perhaps they are hungry? I don't know, but it might have connection to the fact that, for example, everyone likes the picture of well made food, like a T-bone steak.
Unknown said…
Interesting but I never heard about it. To be honest im not suprised that its from Japan. When I checked your youtube link I felt weird. I dont know exactly what i felt but it's not relaxing at all for me.
Yes, I heard about ASMR approximately 2-3 years ago. I listened to ASMR maybe 2-3 times just to understand the purpose of it. Personally, it's not for me - I don't find it relaxing, furthermore, I feel awkward.
To be honest, I don't know why so many people watch Mukbang videos, but most likely because "Koreans used to eat with someone".
Unknown said…
You know, many ASMRtists are so creative. They do roleplays, for instance. There are a lot of them on many themes, they act as doctors, office workers, even as heroes of some films. It's something like cosplay, but with attention to sounds.
Unknown said…
I’ve heard of it and I just don’t understand it, to each his own I guess. If it helps some people in any way, great.
As for the Mukbang I think your explanation of being alone while eating makes sense.
Unknown said…
Yeah, it's weird when someone chewing and munch on purpose. But some people do it very cute.
Hope you find ASMR relaxing and it helps you to fall asleep today.
Unknown said…
And also Asian pay so much attention to the way the food looks. So, maybe you're right. But, unfortunately, there is no such a study to check it.
Unknown said…
You intrigued me. I'd like to know what you felt watching these videos.
Unknown said…
Yes, but not only Asian watch mukbang videos, there are many Europeans who enjoy it too.

I've heard about it, but I have never listened to it. The second video which you posted wasn't relaxing at all. It annoyed me with the sound of scratching a microphone. The effect was quite opposite to what I expected.
I think mostly because of the fact they are lonely. So instead of eating alone they look for company.
Unknown said…
Well i have never heard about this but for me its look very wierd. Ok if someone want to use it feel free to use it without any problems but for me its useless

Haha, made in Japan - it explains everything. Never heard of ASRM or I didn't know it was called so. If sound of a fireplace or raining is ASRM then I do find it very relaxing and calming. Got an app on my phone with such sounds, it's called "myNoise" (on AppStore at least) and there are many different sounds which you can combine and play dynamically. No explicitly human sounds though, I find it creepy - the example of ear massage? Wow. That's really weird. Mukbag is something I couldn't listen to. But it's from Japan so not as surprising.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
