Week 8 [04.12 - 10.12.2017] How the book about the wizard changed our world.

Exactly 20 years ago - June 26, 1997 - there was a novel "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" published by Joan K. Rowling. It was the beginning of a whole series of books about a little wizard. Harry Potter became the most important literary character of the 21st century and certainly the most popular one. Adults and children fell in love with books written by Rowling - with detailed descriptions of the magical world, a complex plot, and humor.

The first edition of the book about Harry Potter was released by English publishing house Bloomsbury on June 26, 1997. Only 500 copies were issued, and 350 of them were bought by provincial British libraries. Ten years later, on July 21, 2007, the seventh part of the cycle was released. Only for the first day of sales of the book in the world was brought out 11 million copies. And today, ten years later, the total circulation of novels about the wizard boy has exceeded half a billion.

"Harry Potter" has formed a whole generation. And this generation is truly global, universal. Today you will not find a person under thirty, who wouldn`t have heard of the novel by Joan Rowling. Whoever knew the word "Quidditch", didn`t say, "fifty points to Gryffindor!". And at the least once in my life, I didn`t have a magic wand in my hands. For many people around the world, the universe created by Joan Rowling has become an international code system. The world today "speaks" in the language of "Harry Potter" without even thinking about it.
Harry Potter Wizard's Collection

The main knowledge that the history of the wizard boy gave us is that barriers separating people are nothing more than illusions than was commonly believed. Eight publishers rejected the Rowling manuscript. The refusal was based on the slow development of events in the book, a lot of details and complexity that may be too hard for children. They also doubted whether children would read a novel written by a woman. Therefore, the name "J. K. Rowling" was written in such a way as to conceal the sex of the author.

Harry Potter struck this wall. The bastion of the "incomprehensible children's world", in which long books do not have the right to exist, fell without a single shot. Children had to read simple stories, but they always dreamed of a real novel, which was written by Joanne Rowling. The appearance of the novel caused a change in the traditional system of children's reading.

Harry Potter destroyed the unspoken taboo on "frivolous" reading for adults. The history of the boy wizard freed children from compulsory literature. Rowling showed that a fairy tale about wizards can be of interest to people of any age.

Twenty years ago, a story began that showed the world that it is much more complete. People belonging to different civilizations can shout with pleasure "Expelliarmus!" and fly on a broomstick. Adults aren't different from children in their tastes and interests. Cultural barriers, which seemed insurmountable, were scattered by a single swing of the magic wand. And all this we owe the thin and shaggy orphan in ridiculous round glasses. There are only few heroes in the world who have made such a generous gift to humanity.

Yes, I'm familiar with the story of Harry Potter in general - I haven't read/watched all books/movies, but only few of them. I got to know Harry Potter due to my dad who gave me first part of this novel. I read it, but the whole story didn't absorb me so much, so I didn't read the rest of the books. Of course, I've seen movies and I kind of enjoyed them when I was a kid, but I've never been a big fan of Harry Potter. I preferred Star Wars all the way. :) I think I don't have any favourite character in this novel, I've always thought that all of them are a bit lame and there is no one I could really look up to. ;P
Yeah, I'm very familiar with story of Harry Potter, in fact it's my favourite book series ever. I've read all of books, even this newest which is a script of a play. Also, I've watched all the movies, but I did not find them very good. I was about 6 when I've heard about Harry Potter for the first time.
Story affected me in the way that now every book I'm reading is average. To be serious, there is something in this books, maybe magic itself? Story is so special that I can not find words to describe it. If you haven't read those series, change it and read it today - you will not be disappointed! I've read series from Stephen King, George Martin, Tolkien etc. but in my opinion there is no other book series that can be compered with HP.
HP has a lot of great supporting characters. My favourites are:
- Professor Lupin, mostly because he is so interesting and warm character, also he is very funny. His introduction was great, funny and mysterious at the same time. Favourite character, for sure.
- Sirius Black, because his character changes a lot during books. He starts as a villain to end as a one of favourite characters from series. Well played, ms Rowling!
- Bill Weasley, mostly because I found him very cool when I was younger - piercing, dragons and most beautiful girlfriend? I wanted to be like him.
- Dolores Umbridge for being best villain in book, even better than Voldemort.
There are ton of others characters that I like, but those are my favourite ones.

Harry potter is one of my favorite novels. Since childhood, I love this series. Although I read only two parts of Harry potter but I watched all the parts. I first watched Harry Potter when I was 8 years old. Has it affected my life? Probably not. Movies do not affect my life. As a child, I also wanted to be a Harry Potter :) I have many favorite characters.
Above all, the main three, Harry Potter, Hermiona Granger and Ron Weasley :) I like also Severus Snape. Although at first I thought he was on this dark side, but later it turned out that he always had good intentions and protected Harry. I would like it to be a continuation of this story :)
I actually liked the book, also watched movie for a few times as a child, but somehow I lost interest in harry potter when I grew up. It was always interesting story to read, and I'd definitely recommend it to other people :).

Exactly! It is definitely one of the best movies of my childhood. I often watched the movie on the television, but I didn't read it cuz being a child, I wasn't intersted in reading too much. I watched the first part when I was about 12 y.o.
Watching this movie always brought me a lot of emotions but the perceprion of the movie would be different if I watched it today.
As a rule, in contrast to Draco Malfoy and Slytherine I loved the trio- Harry, Ron and Hermiona. I choose them cuz they generally fought against evil.

I'm very familiar with Harry Potter. I remember getting the first book in the series on my birthday in November 2000, so I was 8 years old. It really makes me feel old now. I enjoyed the books very much, and every time a new one came out, I'd re-read the previous ones prior to the new one. This is definitely THE book of my childhood. It did for sure have some influence on me, as it teaches about values in life and about whats good and what isn't, even though I never thought about that.

My favorite character was always Harry Potter himself, because of his problem solving skills and being a great quidditch player :)

Unlike watching TV I love watching good movies. That’s obvious that I’m familiar with the story of Harry Potter. I’ve read each of books once and watched each movie many times. I think that I was about 7/8 years old when I felled in love with this novel. I consider it as the best book, movie, story that I’ve read, seen in my life. Even despite the fact that there is a lot of magic in this story we would say that it is magical. I think that there is no way to watch it and avoid felling in love with this three friends and their adventures. Of course my favorite character is Harry Potter, the main character because of his all advantages, skills etc.

Yes, I familiar with the story of Harry Potter. I read books and watched all series film. The first part I watched when I was a kid in 2002 or 2003 ... don't remember :)
This story did not affect my life.
But I will remember all my life how the best tale :)
Favorite character in the novel is Severus Snape. He showed himself as a villain, but all the time helped Harry.
OMG. Of course I’m familiar with the story of Harry Potter. I’ve read every book and watched every movie (couple of times to be honest). I was 7 years old when my mum took me to the premiere of first Harry Potter movie and during the next couple of days I’ve read every Harry Potter book that was available, all four of them. Harry Potter accompanied me through my whole childhood I’ve watched the last movie when I was 17. It was a great adventure that I’ll be forever grateful for.

I think most of people have heard about Harry Potter. I've read and watched all parts. I've read Potter when I was in primary school and I think it was the first book that I was reading with pleasure not because I had to. And I think this book made me more into books so that now I read a lot.
My favourite character was Harry, because as a small girl I was in love with him. Hm, actually I was in love with every main character in every movie/book when I was a child haha
Well, then. Everyone can have an opinion. I also like Star Wars too, but not as much as Harry Potter. And maybe I wouldn't want to recount the books now. I already know the story, and it will not be interesting. But I find this universe incredible. And some of the characters deserve careful attention.

I am very glad to meet a person who also admires this universe. I'm ready to agree, the films were terrible. I can review the first three. Maybe I'll make myself see the fourth. But the rest is a nightmare. Especially the seventh, I'm not ashamed to say that I saw them only once, at the cinema. I also read the eighth book, but alas she disappointed me. I tend to the idea that the desire to earn in it was stronger than the desire to please the fans.

I love to read the fantasy books. I will not lie if I say that I read one book a day. But still, Harry Potter forces him to come back to him again and again.
It's cool that we both love Sirius Black, I'm very saddened by his fate. And I don't stop to think how the story would have changed if he did not get in prison. Thank you for your lovely comment.
I also love Severus Snape. I think he is the most underrated character in this series of books._(
Perhaps this is correct. Grow out of some things over time. I think that I will give it to my children when they appear.
Yes, Slytherin steers! I'm delighted that so many people love Harry Potter!
I think that waiting for the release of new books is very important. I think I would have loved this story less if I had not waited so long. And I also read from the beginning all the parts before releasing a new book. But sometimes I feel old when I see that children read Harry Potter in a row. They didn't need to wait for the next book to be published. This is sad because the first and seventh books are very different and it is difficult to read all the books at the same age. I can say that the books grew with us.
I also think that this is the best book, movie, story in the world. I think that in our life more magic is required. My childhood would be terrible without Harry Potter.
I love Severus Snape! He is the bravest and strongest man in the world!
Harry Potter can be re-read a million times)) Also remember my first trip to the cinema on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. at that time I had already read the first book and gave spoilers to my parents. Mom wanted to knock me.
Little girls just have to fall in love with the main characters. And by the way, I still do not like Ginny Weasley. The main characters should remain alone, and then we will always have hope))) I still remember that sorrow, when the letter did not come on my 11th birthday. Another year I believed that they made a mistake and corrected it until my next birthday. Ahahha
I don't even know a person, who hasn't even heard about Harry Potter. I watched all movies and read two books. But i prefer watching a movie. I don't remember exactly, but under 10 y.o. for sure.
This story didn't affect on my life, it is just a tale and even when i was about 8 years old, i was not naive )
My favourite character is Ron Weasley, he is so funny and making me laugh all the time. All things that he made were so clumsy and i can't imagine movie without this kind of character. Also i was a fan of Hagrid, just because of his beard, it's crazy and huge.

I have never been a big fan of Harry Potter. When was a child I watched it because other people did. I remember that I saw the first four parts in the cinema twice but after I stopped. In the past I read book but it wasn't interesting for me. I didn't like movies about Harry Potter very much but I must say that the last part was good. This story didn't influence me. My favorite character from Harry Potter is Hagrid. I liked his character and the way he looked. He is very orginal character.

I've read all books, some of them two, three or even four times. I've also watched and rewatched all hte movies. It is good story and it brings some good memories, but it is really overrated, in my opinion. When it comes to favorite character, I think it is Sirius Black. The third part, when he appeared for the first time, was the only one, where there were almost nothing about Voldemort, and this fact definitely makes this part unique. I also like stories about what it was, when Harry's parents were students, and most of these storie includes Sirius. In fact, Sirius for Harry was the only one possible "connection" with his parents.

I have watched all movies about Harry Poter. It is a quiet interesting story, but it didn`t affect my life at all. I am a huge fan of Harry Poter. First I watched Harry Poter when I was about 12 years old and I didn`t like it very much at that moment . But later I have watched it once more and I enjoyed it.

I've never been a huge fan of Harry Potter, despite I watched all the episodes. I liked the story when I was younger, but now it's not attractive to me at all. I think the new books are made only for profit. The story didn't affect my life at all. Hagrid was the character that I liked most. He was original and seemed to be really kind.
I have read all the HP books and watched only few of the movies. I was about 12 years old when I started reading "Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone".
Well the story affected my life is such way that rather than doing my school homework I was reading the damn books about wizards. Right decision 10/10 :D
The question about favorite character is difficult. Maybe Fred and George Weasley? They were crazy and funny and I liked it.

I am very familiar with Harry Potter books. I have read my first Harry Potter book when I was 9 or 10. I have read 4 editions, but then I stopped. Maybe I grew up. But lately I was watching every edition in TV every summer holiday. The story of HP did not affect my life. Maybe because it is just fiction and I don't get affected by it. My favorite character in the poem is Harry Potter. He is the best in the novel and I like people who are better than others and are special.

I was in primary school when the first movie of Harry Potter came out. I haven't read first 4 parts of Harry Potter series, I have only watched it. I still have first part on VHS. When I was older I've read last 3 parts and they were really interesting.
I know a lot about the world of Harry Potter however I'm not a geek. I consider it only as a good book and great movies (I love the soundtracks).
My favourite character is Sirius Black, Harry's uncle. He was a noble person and could transform into a dog ;)

I have never read Harry Potter books but I was watching every edition in TV last summer holiday. Effects were amazing.
Has it affected my life? Of course not :) It's unreal film and it can't happen in our life.
My favorite character was Harry Potter. He was very helpful and showed that good always triumphs over evil.

Yes i'm familiar with this story. And yes i have watched the movies and also read the books. Still it did not impact my life in the least. Still it's just a story. Not good, but not bad either. Even as a 6 year old child i have not even once jumped out of joy or anything because of this. As such i don't have any favourite characters, unless dragons count assuch. In that case it's pretty obvius isn't it?
Oh man, where to start...

I learned to read using those books. Not in general, but an a middle school level. I always got bored by reading books, I doubt I've ever finished a book for school, but this series was always special. I used to read them aloud to my younger sister, we used to fight whose turn it was to read. I used to own all the books in audiobook format and listen to them while falling asleep (I found it really helps you calm down when you're ill and are having some crazy exhausting dreams). It was an undeniably huge part of my childhood, and the fact the the characters grew along me only multiplied my fascination with it.

Favourite characters :)

I recall my friend writing love letters to Emma Watson, the actress who played Hermione in the movies. Apparently he was able to obtain her "real" e-mail address. And out of the male fans of the movie, he certainly wasn't the only one. You could probably call her the "princess Leia" of out generation.

There were many likeable characters in that book, the great strength of the main hero, was that he had complexity. He had problems, vices, he behaved like an asshole from time to time, making him much easier to connect with.

Personally I liked how she completed the Snape's story arc. Can't say that I've liked him in the past, he wasn't written to be a likeable character, but that ending was a true masterpiece of storytelling.

Are you familiar with the story of Harry Potter? Have you read books or watched a movie? How old were you, when you first heard about Harry Potter?
Did this story affect your life, and if so, how?
What are your favorite characters in the novel? Why did you choose them?

I really hate it. Tried to watch it many times and I can only use censored words to show my true emotions about this movie. It is so unreal and foolish I really cannot watch it. But I also do not like Lords OF The Rings so maybe I just do not like this kind of stories.
Yeaah, i guess everyone born in 90's is familiar with it. I have seen all movies went threw books too. However i always concidered Tolkien as more interesting, more complete etc. I know it is dumb to compare those 2 but yeaah... still i think it was entertaining, when i was 10 and when i am 20 watching with my gf which is huge potterhead :)

Of course I am familiar with the story of Harry Potter and I have watched all movies but I didn't ready any Harry Potter books. I was always a fan of Harry Potter and I admire him because he was smart and very strong magician.

I am familiar with the story of Harry Potter, I was on every part of movie in cinema. Actually I didn't read books, just watched movies. I can't remember how old I was but something about 8 years old. My favourite character was Harry, but Snape was good one too.
When i read the title of article i knew it will be about Harry Potter series. To be honest i didn't read any of Harry Potter's book but i watched all of the movie series and i really liked them.
When i heard about Harry Potter for the first time i was probably at 10 years ago but i'm not sure. It's fascinating that first Harry Potter movie was directed at 2001 when i was only six years old!
The story didn't affect my life, i enjoyed watching it but it's not my favourite movie.
My favourite character from the novel is professor Snape beacuse of his shocking ending.

I love Harry Potter!!! It's my favourite character from books for children. My love started when i saw first time "Harry Potter and Philosopher's Stone". I was very young and i wend with my dad to the cinema. It was love at the first sight. When i was eighteen years old i started reading books. It was amazing journey experiences again.
Thanks to this story and the story of live J.K. Rowling (she had really hard situations in live, respect for her!) Now i belive that good good overcomes :)

Yes, i'm familiar with the Harry Potter story. I have watched and read all books and films. For the first time about Harry Potter I heard when I was young, 1st or 2nd grade in elementary school. I love this story and think that it allows children to develop their imagination. Of course, my favorite character is Harry Potter.
Of course I am familiar with the story of Harry Potter, but I am not a big fan. I have read maybe 3 books, but watched all movies. Recently, I have rewatched all movies, they definitely don't amaze me like in a childhood, but still great. I was about 8 years old, when I heard about Harry Potter for the first time.
Did this story affect my life? I guess in some way. This story teaches a lot of good things concerning friendship, family and etc.
My favorite character in the novel is Ron Weasley, he is funny and brave.

I have watched, but I have never read the books. Harry Potter for me is a cosy home evening, a big cup of tea and a mood for some fairytale. Maybe I wasn't always in a mood for Harry, but I am glad that his story exists. It is a wonderful world and it means a lot for many children and even grown-ups. I think it has made this world a little better. Magic. Maybe one day when I will have kids, I will give them these books, I do believe it would become a classics of literature. I don't have the favorite character, but I like the atmosphere of this movie, and it was partly created by talented young actors, and all the characters are quite interesting.

Harry Potter is my favourite book. I read it when I was child. As I remember there was only 2 books published at that moment. And I couldn't wait for time when next parts would be published. Few of them I read few times, for exmaple 2 part I read 4 times. Yes, I'm a strange person. I watched all films about Harry Potter too, including last one "Fantastic beasts and where to find them" which is not related to Harry Potter but it's from the same universe. This book... It definetelly changed my life.

I’ve read all the books and watched all the movies. I’ve also played a few of the games based on the story. I don’t really know if it affected my life, maybe? As for my favourite characters, hmm… I don't have one I think.
Also, the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” was quite fun. The world created in the books has such a great potential for new stories.

Everyone knows Harry Potter! Who doesn't? It was one of the greatest books to read as a kid. Totally immersive, rich world of magic mixing with daily reality. Always full of adventure and things that you wanted to be possible (like using magic to tidy up your room) or trying out elixirs and sweets they always eat on the train. Everything aobut it was/is magical.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
