Week 7 [27.11-03.12.2017] How to spot a liar?

Could you spot a liar? Even if the liar would be a child? It turns out that its harder than we though. And it also turns out that we should be happy when our children start to lie because that mean (in short) that our kid is growing and hes getting smarter. If you want to test yourself and check if you can really tell if a kid is lying, check out Kang Lees lecture. Kang Lee is Developmental researcher which studied what happens to children when they lie. You can be shocked how hard it is to say if somebody is liar or not, even if the one whos lying is a child.

Questions:
1. Did you manage to find out whos lying? If yes, how?
2. Do you think you are a good liar?
3. What do you think of the morality of the lie? Are there situations where lie is better than the truth? Or maybe we should always tell the truth?

Comments

Main problem with lying is that you must have great memory to remember what you've said to whom. That's point where most liars fails. I know some liars who were lying for such a long time, that at some point they were not able to do it anymore, because they were saying different things to same persons. I hate speaking to people like that, because there is no basically sense of doing it, cause all of that person is saying is meaningless.
I don't think that I'm good liar and in fact I don't want to be. I try not to lie, because in most parts of life lying may lead to harming someone.
There are situations where lying is better choice than saying the truth. Sometimes it may save a lot of tears, but in most situations lying is a bad thing. There is one problem: who makes me suitable to lie? Am I so important to steal right of knowing true from someone? It's a risk that every person who is lying must take.
There is a show called "Lie to me" that tells a story of a guy who is master of knowing if someone is laying or not. I didn't watch a lot of that tv series, but it was quite fun for me.
Also while we are talking about lying there are tons of board games where lying is one of the most important factor to win.
There is great web hmmm let's called it game - evolution of trust, link: http://ncase.me/trust/. Check it, 100% worthy in my opinnion.

I can manage if some people are lying. For example my sister. When I'm in front of her I easily say if she's lying by looking at her eyes and mouth. When we are on phone I can say if she's laying by listening to her and how precisely she responds - if she does not directly address the question it may be a great sign of lie or hiding the truth (which I also cinsider a lie).
I think I'm a good liar, but I hate it - there are some situation where I lie, but I'm making it in good faith.
Morality of lie is not that simple. Lying your partner about where have you been, with whom you've been is awful. If you don't want to say it to not to make your partner angry then why you're doing it? If you do something you know that is bad or may have some consequences they lying about it won't make it better - lying is such situations is awful and I can't undestarnd why people are bahaving like that.
But there are situation where lying is justified. My grandfather was a sailor. When he was at a cruise his father died. When he called to my grandmother and asked how is he she lied, that he's fine - telling the truth wouldn't change anything, he couldn't get back to the funeral anyway so he oly would think about it for another 4 months. When he got back she told him about everything and he wasn;t angry or anything. He claimed, that she was right and he was grateful that she deciden not to tell him the truth.
Example is unusual as I think that lie is unusual justified.
It is better to tell the truth, as long as the truth will always show up.

It's good that my mom didn't read this article haha Anyway I once read about it. When someone is lying it seems to be looking at the top left corner. I don't remember exactly. supposedly I'm a very good liar. But he lied very rarely and only in a good deal :)I don't use it myself, but I think that the truth is better than the lie.

Honestly sometimes it isn’t hard to find out that someone is lying. Also sometimes even if it is hard we may know someone for enough period of time to see that something is not ok. You just have to listen carefully, use your mind, connect different facts etc. but sometimes it is impossible to see that someone is lying.
I don’t think that I’m a good liar but If I need to lie I often do it properly that it gives me effect which I wanted. I would also like to add that in my opinion lying I bad thing and we should truly avoid it and always tell the truth but I’m sure that each of us can agree that there are situations when lie is necessary. I think that when you lie and nobody is harmed it isn’t a big thing but as I sad, we should often try to avoid lying.

Sometimes you see on the face people , their facial expressions, gestures ask everything .
everyone at least once in life lied and I am no exception. But I won't say that I'm a good a liar..
The lie always leads to problems. You should understand when to should lie and then tell the truth.
Unknown said…
Sometimes lying is better than saying truth. That is how people work. That is who life works...
I am not saying that we should lie, but truth can hurt one or both sides.
Only thing you need to do, to learn more about person - that is the way how you can find out who is lying. You can listen to guy, who is talking too much and after 2 minutes you Would say: -"f.... fabler". But if you are talking to person, who is not so sociable, it's so difficult to decide, lier he/she is or not.
I'm a bad lier, but agreed with the words above, that sometimes lying is better way to solve some kind of problem.
Difficult question about morality..hm..
I would say you need to lie sometimes, even if it sounds like a bad thing from me, but you need to calculate, how many problems it can cause.

I managed to find out that the little Asian girl was lying, because she was really frightened. You can see it on her face. On the other hand, the boy was chilled out.

I don't think I'm a good liar. I'd say the opposite but I don't lie much. Especially I don't lie to my friends and family. When there is a need to tell something "wrong" I prefer to say something broadly and then nobody knows what's the point.

In my opinion, lies are the last option when we have to solve some problems in our lives. For example we can lie when someone has a weak heart and can't stress too much. I'm still young and I don't know much about life. For now, this is how I think. We will see when the life will verifie me.

As a woman when I ask someone something I usually already know the answer, so yes I think I can spot when someone's lying ;)
I'm not a good liar, because I don't lie. I hate it and I don't know why people do it.
In my opinion we should always tell the truth or say nothing. There is no point in lying.
I noticed that something was wrong with the kids lie test too. I mean, it was so obvious for common people that the boy is lying but i knew that they want to show us that it's not always that obvious. Thank you for your comment.
Lie sometimes can save our lives. Imagine a situation when a woman asks a man about her look in that dress. If a man would tell her that she looks fat in that dress, then he is dead. :) Thank you for your comment.
Thank your for your comment and the game you linked! I finished that game and i must say that it's really good. I agree with you. It's not that easy to keep the same lie to everyone. In some point we can get lost and people will manage to see that we're not telling the truth.

I've learned to spot liars because I am liar itself. I can't say I am a good liar, becausefor me it requires good concentration and thinking to lie about something. But still, I know how to lie, I can do it, and I can see, when somebody is trying to lie to me.
I'm saying that I am good liar because of fact that I've never been caught in situation, when I forgot what I said previously (which was a lie), and say the different things after a while (a different kind of lie or even the truth that I don't want to say).

What is truth, after all? The truth is what the things are or what we believe they are? If it is the first, how can you explain the existence of various religions all around the world based on belief? If it is second, it means that there is no one truth but for each human exist at least one truth, that is different from any other ones. How can lying be judged if the truth is unknown or unwanted?
I would say that we usually don't know when someone is lying. I think people are in general good liars and it's really hard for a common human (not an expert) to figure out if someone is telling the truth or not. I think that we lie everyday. Thank you for your comment.
I think it depends on how well we know the other person. Sometimes they have some kind of a tell. I can always tell when my brother is lying - he bursts into laughter in the middle of a sentence so it’s not that hard to tell. I don’t think I’m a good liar. I've faked a cold few times to get out of going to school but that’s it. I think telling a white lie not to hurt someone’s feeling is not that bad – I would not treat it as a crime.

Thank you for the video, it's really interesting. But I think the technology of identifying lie would rather be used in courts (instead of a lie detector). Because there's no need to check parents or students with such a difficult technology, you can just ask parents. And in the case of students, teachers should know psychology, so they can identify who lies.
Unfortunately, I didn't choose the right child. My choice was that they both lied. Because they both look suspicious.
Unknown said…
The game is really amazing. It's easy to guess who will cheat in the game. I'd like to play the similar one, but with real people instead of those characters, something like multiplayer. I'd be even more interesting.
Filip Sawicki said…
I did find out who was lying, but only because I predicted that answer wouldn’t be obvious. In normal situation I would certainly falsely guess. I think that lies are one of the main parts of our life. Lie detector presented in the presentation could cause a threat for natural human interaction. I am strongly against using that kind of technology in fields other than healthcare.
There are many situations where lies are better than truth but morality of that is very vague and depend strictly on the circumstances. However, I certainly do not think that we should always tell the truth. Imagine the world where everyone but one would tell the truth, what inconceivable things that person would accomplish.
Yevhen Shymko said…
Lie is critical part of our society. It's not possible to build relationship of any kind without lie. There always something you dont like about other person. Lie is an instrument and it depends on you how you want to use it. Always telling the truth is easy, moderate the lie is art.
"So, you know this magical way for avoiding any trouble and getting people to give you what you want? Never use that again."
Louie C.K. to his 5-year-old daughter

There's a really good TV series about people researching micro-expressions called "Lie To Me". In one point they raise a very good point. It's not about weather someone is lying, it's about why? We live in a complex world, where people have countless reasons not to tell the truth. They can also be easily manipulated to believe what they are saying, or simply misinformed. If we detect a person is lying saying "there is no bomb on a plane", does it mean that he planted a bomb, or that he saw some eastern looking person in the queue and he's just prejudice. It's all about the context.

1. I though both kids did.
2. Good enough.
3. Read my previous comment.

I managed to find out who was lying but it's probably I expected it'd be too obvious if won the boy who was looking down.
I don't think I'm good liar. I have never been able to cheat well and most of the time I'm so scared I immediately become red all over the face ;)
Well, I believe most of the time we should tell the truth but there are situations when telling lie may save someone's life or it's just not really harmful, for example I don't mind telling small lie to inquisitive people because it saves me some time and it's not something they really need to know.

"I am my father" :D
thanks, it's an interesting TED speech.

I suspected the child #2 was lying only because I assumed the test was setup to mislead us (the child #1 looked down when he said "no" - a common sign of lying while the child #2 tried a bit too hard to act honest). I'm not sure I would guess it in a real life situation though.

I'm not a good liar. I don't have a poker face and my memory is really bad :) So whenever I can I opt to tell the truth.

Your question about the morality of lying reminded me about a comedy "The Invention of Lying" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhRnmyBjOLs

I didn't manage to find out who was lying. I think I am good liar. And I think people who lies the best are actors. I think none of us wants to be lied. But sometimes we don't know what is best for us. And in such situations we should lie to somebody.

No, I was sure that the boy was lying, but I also suspected that there was a trap in this test. As a result, I didn't manage to find the liar.
To be honest, I often try not to lie because I am adult and I guess what consenquesces may wait for me. Sometimes I can not to tell everything but I don't consider it to be lip gloss.
If we always tell the truth, we would not have any friend. That's the truth. Some people prefer to know a lie that to be aware of the truth. I prefer to tell the truth and than I have clear mind

I love the idea of technology shown in the video. I can't lie myself nor i detect a lier. Shame that i am 99% sure this won't be used on politicians, only on us, little mouses for marketing purpose or police investigation.
However use of it in court would be mile breaking. No more perjury .

1. I managed to detect that little girl was lying because of her strong facial expressions by which she was trying to persuade us that she was actually telling the truth.
2. I think that I am not such a good liar as I used to be when I was a child. In my opinion It is naturally connected with becoming more responsible as we are growing up. Currently, I am more concerned about consequences and long term effects of telling lies and that it can cause a lot of problems for me as well as for other people.
3. I could imagine some situations when lie is better than the truth but I think it is kind of a short-term solution as it only sweeps problem under the rug. Lie can work for several years, but in most cases, truth will come out eventually and then it can be very harmful to the parties involved.
Foodocado said…
I wasn't able to recognize the liar. It's easier to find out that somebody lies when you know that person. I don't think I am a goo liar. I feel awful when I have to lie to someone. That's why I don't do this very often. I believe it's better not to tell about something, than lie. The truth always come out...
Vladlen Kyselov said…
I guess that lying is not always bad. Sometimes it is even necessary measure, for example when you should not tell the truth to someone to protect him/her from unnecessary stressful situations. Everyone in this world is a liar and lied to someone at least once, but more oftenly than lying to someone we lie to ourselves, for example "I will do it tomorrow" as the most widely spread lie.
I think that I am not a good liar, because always when I lie I act not as I usually do it and my biggest problem is that I lie to much I can forget what I`ve told, what I`ve found out as the best lie at that moment and if I will have to repeat my lie I could fail. Morality of lie is very complicated and everyone should understand it. I would like to say that telling truth is sometimes hard but still very important thing to do escpecially to your relatives and friends, but even in family there can occur situations where it is better to lie than tell the truth.
Unknown said…
I am not sure if the first question concerns kids presented in the video or everyday people around me. I was wrong about these kids, but I feel like I am good liar detector on daily basis. Basically, I rely on people's mistake and moments of weakness during long speeches rather than some magic liar skills. I do think I am a good liar, almost always I know what someone wants to hear and I can provide this information with a sweet smile. About the last question, lying is bad and I never lie about things crucial for me or someone else. There is plenty of situations where lie is better than the truth and mostly common these are health situations, where you want to avoid someone's extra pain.
Jakub Lisicki said…
I did manage to find out which one out the two kids was telling a lie, but that was probably just pure luck, since I'm a pretty bad liar. I always feel regrets after telling a lie, since that may influence the way other people treat, or are likely to believe you in the future. Telling lies is pretty natural, sometimes it's pretty helpful, but it may also cause several long term effects. Overall, I don't think it's worth it.
Sometimes lying seems to be justified, but we should stick to the truth more.
Unknown said…
If you are asking about video then yes, I recognized it but if you are asking me about people around me then I am not sure. Sometimes its easy to recognize lier especially if you know that person. I don't think that I am good lier, I dont like to lie.
I know that it's bad but in my opinion sometimes it's better to lie than tell the truth.
Unknown said…
It's very hard to get to know when new people lie. But I know when my friends lie. I think that I'm not a good lier. I think that there are lots of situations when a lie is better than truth. I think that a small lie is better than sad true. There are some situations when people shoudn't know anything about it.
Marcin Górski said…
I think that is very hard to recognize the liar. If you don't know that person it is very difficult because you don't know about that person behavior.
I don't like to lie and thats why I'm thinking that I'm a bad lier. It is very stressful for me. I can't to look into my opponents eyes and that is the easiest way to recognize that.
There are some situations that lie is better than true. I think that we should tell the reality but we should do it very prudently.
Thank you for the excellent lecture on the TED.
I was able to determine that the child # 2 lies. But I think it was an accident. Although this girl was too innocent and convincing, why? Usually, if you are telling the truth, you do not need to convince anyone, you already know for yourself that you are right. Well, I also just don't trust children, they are all very dangerous little demons.
I don't know how good I'm a liar. All the problems are that I do not have to do this often.Although, if you start telling the teacher that you were not in the class because you were sick, then he will not believe you. And it doesn't depend on how good you are in lies. It's just that everybody is lying to him, and in this case, even the truth will not help much.
I believe that lies in our lives are necessary. If it doesn't exist, then humanity will become crazy. I am very grateful to Mama that she was an enemy to me in my childhood. Yes, my hamster just ran away. Yes, the nature of the parrot has changed, because he lived for a long time with his grandmother. But in adulthood, it is also needed. What we don't know, we don't hurt.
Unknown said…
My guess about which child was lying turned out to be the right one, even though I have no idea why exactly.

I think I am a good liar when I feel I have to. There are some situations when I feel I have to do it for a greater good. Sometimes there are stupid lies for a surprise to work, and these I sometimes blow. In such situations I sometimes cannot stay serious and lose the poker face. Other situations, when I don't want someone to worry, or know truth would hurt someone and is very unlikely to actually come out, I have no problems with that. The thing is, you have to be able to quickly evaluate the possible positive and negative outcomes, if it is morally right, the following risks and the chances that it will not come out. Sometimes it's clear you should, 99% of the cases it is simply not worth it.
Unknown said…
I was not sure but my first think was that she was a liar. I think that she was more stressed because of it. I think that it is easier to recognise if somebody lies or not during such research than in real situation.

I am not certainly a good lier because I feel very bad if I have to tell not truth. Sometimes when I try to tell a lie if feel so much guilty that I have to tell the truth in a moment.

I think that sometimes a lie is better than truth. In extremal situations e.g in the car accident died somebody who was really close to you and you are seriously hurt but in the ambulance you ask if everybody are fine. I think that in such situation it is understandable that in this particular moment you would prefer to hear a lie.
If you are asking about the video, I failed to detect the lier. I am a very naive person, so it is hard for me to spot a lie. I am a bad lier, so if I do not want to tell something I usually avoid the topic. I think there are situations that we should lie, like in Kamizelka of Bolesław Prus.
Indeed, if you know the person it's much easier to find out that he's not honest with us or not. But i think if the person is good at it, it's almost impossible to tell if he's lying or not. Even the polygraph can be cheated and result would be falsified. Thank you for your comment.
1. Did you manage to find out who’s lying? If yes, how?
Yes. How - I spent a lot of time with my grandson and as a 10 year old he is lying mostly all the time :)
2. Do you think you are a good liar?
Everyone of us has to be in different situations. In my work it is not mostly about lying but saying something the way client wants to hear. PR all the time.
3. What do you think of the morality of the lie? Are there situations where lie is better than the truth? Or maybe we should always tell the truth?
There are many situations when you can't tell the truth otherwise people will panic.
Zygmunt Z said…
It is rather easy to spot a liar during such research, my guess was the girl on the right and as Tomasz Trzos said, she looked as if she was more stressed. I think that I am a good liar when I have to and when I know that when there was a necessity to tell a lie to another person whether it is to protect her or not to make her sad or worried I have no moral problems with that because in the end it has a better outcome to the situation. I can't say that always telling a lie is a good way because as we know a lie has no legs and in the end it may cause more problems than telling the truth but when you feel that telling a lie is the only solution and you can face it then I don't see any cons
Patryk Pohnke said…
I knew girl cheated cause I just voted for the option I would't normally choose. This is the purpose of such tests :D
I think I am, but I guess it isn't a thing you can be proud of. I use it as a final, ultimate tool when all other options failed.
Definitely there are a lot of situations where lie is better than truth, but in general it is not worth lying, especially in situations which aren't important.
I managed to get my initial prediction right, so I have some idea about it, even if it's just blind shot :).

Sometimes lying can be beneficial for both parties. Those are usually small lies, or more like "avoiding the truth" rather than "telling something that is not true". I'm trying to not lie frequently, but sometimes I will make an excuse for example to simply stop talking with somebody that I'm no longer interested talking to, and I don't see anything wrong in it. Lying everywhere and about everything is bad, but trying to do reverse-psychology and spot a lier is as bad as lying itself - the question should be WHY that person is lying to us, and not whether he is or not, since that can be stated pretty easily and without any external tools in most cases.

Try to check too poker players if you want to see bluff in completely new poker face edition :).

Well, as shown in the video it's really hard to guess if a kid is lying. I did not guess it. Am I a good liar? I would have to ask other people if they believed me, but I would go with a no, I'm not the best at it cause usually I can't keep a straight face if I want to colorize something. Personally I prefer sour truth than the sweetest lie but it depends on the topic and the seriousness of it.

Interesting video, I would love to have that tech integrated into some glasses, or at least some smartphone camera- knowing other people's feelings and thoughts about you is a big advantage in discussions or when it comes to making friends. Actually it would boil down to "High five him 13 times, so you would be his best friend", giving you an edge during trades and signing contracts.
I've managed to tell who was lying, cause people tend to overreact when telling the lie, and therefore their actions look exaggerated. I don't think that I am a good liar, but it depends on the context anyway- a lie is as good as the amount of time and effort needed to verify it.
Of course nobody is going to take actions to prove that you came to the college building by a private helicopter, because everyone knows there are no helipads in the vicinity of it, so its a cheap lie everyone knows about almost instantly. Also, people don't like ones who talk lies often, even the simple ones, as it just makes them look like "stupid BS'ers".
When it comes to morality- well.. It depends what are we about to lie. Sometimes it's good not to tell the terminally ill that they are dying, so they can be happy during their last moments. On the other hand, people tend to lie to themselves- homeopathy industry and other companies making pills from 100% of powdered sugar wouldn't be this big if those lies were that morally bad...

I think I can recognize when someone is lying. In this film, I managed to do it partially, but in reality when I see a person face to face it is much easier to detect. The ability to lie is something popular nowadays and should be considered. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the truth and we run away to say only what the other person wants to hear.
Usually I'm able to recognise when someone is lying, but if it's not someone that is close to me, then I simply don't care enough to do anything about that. The same goes with my lies. I often find myself in a weird spot of saying something without thinking and me being myself I don't even try to correct the information and have to go with the flow. But I don't lie to people that I care about, with others I simply can't be bothered to rehabilitate. The thing with morality is that there is no universal one. I mean that there is no good or evil in the universe and there are only opinions. With that in mind I don't believe that we should be telling truth all the time, sometimes it's better to say nothing.
Wojtek Kania said…
Well I think only liars can find out other liar. I am not a good liar, so I can't find out liars. In my opinion lie is always worse than the truth. The truth can be more difficult than lie. But even the most difficult truth is easier to accept than the most beautiful lie.
Yes, I did manage to find out who is lying. I find it hard not to. It’s pretty obvious, she is trying too hard.
I don’t know if I’m a good liar, but I think that I’m not that bad.
I think that in some situations the lie is better than the truth. But in the most cases telling truth may be a lot “easier” in the long run.
Unknown said…
I am not a good liar unfortunately, I blush when I am under pressure. :) I am not really good at spotting a liar either. Of course, sometimes I lie succesfully, but does that prove anything?

On the topic of morality of lies, I believe there is no such thing as an "immoral deed". A lie, an assasination or serving an oversalted soup - anything can be morally justified depending on a situation.

By the way, there is a funny movie called "The Invention of Lying". It's a movie about a world where nobody lies and one day the main hero invents lying. If anybody is interested in the topic of lying, it is a nice movie to watch, as it shows us how would our world look like if everybody was telling only truth. It's a bit silly but also quite original and I liked it.

Yes, I was right about the second kid. The boy is very self-confident, he looks relaxed.
On the other hand, girl is very serious and she looks hesitant.
I don’t know, because I’m not lying. I think I could be a good liar
You know, it’s life. Sometimes there are situations, where lies are better, but honestly I would rather know the worst truth than a good lie. I know people who lied a lot, and then they started to believe in their own lies and well… they doesn’t look happier.
Unknown said…
Well i dont recognize lieyrs on that movie. I trust only my closed peoples like family or closed friends and dont belive to much in other people like strangers. Of course we have to trust in some things what people said but for me we should check any information what we got from stranger people.

Of course I managed to discover a liar. I have a one friend who often lies. His problem is that he is a very poor liar. It's easy to see when he is lying. In such moments he wonders about what he wants to say for a long time. He is not sure of his words. Sometimes pretending not to hear what I was saying to him.
I don't know if I am a good liar. Basically, I just lie when I have to. It is not often situation.
It seems to me that sometimes it is better to lie.
For example, for the good of others. Not always the truth is good. However, it seems to me that a lot depends on the morality of a liar.
Unknown said…
It takes a liar to know a liar. I strongly believe that as with everything - if you're good at something you are likely to see this skill in others. I don't know if I'm any good at it but situations that cause me to think of someone as a liar happen pretty often. Maybe I am just paranoid or maybe I've watched too many episodes of House MD. Idk

I don't want to touch the subject of morality when it comes to lying. Everyone does that and it is not such a big deal. Only crazy people are always honest with everyone.
Unknown said…
I'm really bad in that case! For me it's terrybli hard to know who is lying or who is not.
In my opinion, i'm good lier. It's not good skill but i think that my experience in the theater is helpful. I wrote that it's not good sklil because for me lying is bad. So lie is always worse way than truth. But i know a situation in my life that sometimes we have to lie. Sad but truth.
Magdalena Popek said…
I don't know if I'm a good liar. I try not to lie. I was lying when I was a child because of sometimes overprotective parents. "No, of course I was playing only at the nearest playground", "No, I didn't go there". If someone tells me small lies - I don't care actually. If someone's late I don't care if their bus broke down and they had to walk or they just overslept. They are late - happens. I don't think we should always tell the truth, but in most of the situations we should. We never know how lying can turn against us. And telling the truth immediately instead of lying is way better than admitting to a lie.
