Week 7 [27.11-03.12.2017] Beard – just facial hair or style of living?

Growing a beard is very popular recently, you can see a lot of people following the trend and growing their facial hair, even those famous ones like football players or TV presenters. Currently we have November, which for many men is associated with actions like “no-shave November” or “Movember” that are supposed to raise awareness of men’s health issues. But for some people growing a beard is something more than that. Here is a video of MJ Johnson -  a man who turned his beard into his way of living.

Questions:
  1. What do you think about beards? Do you think that people look good with them or rather like they would be neglected?
  2. Do you think that beards should be accepted in workplaces or they are inappropriate?
  3. Did you like the MJ Johnson’s beard? 😊 Do you find these unusual types of beards interesting or rather funny?

I like beards and moustaches. I think men look better with facial hair than without. My logic here is simple: if you have a facial hair for a long time and you shave it, you're gonna look like a child. If you don't have a beard and you finally grow some - then you will look better in most cases :D

On the topic of facial hair at work - I think it's ok. I tried to come up with a proffesion or a field in which beard would be a nuissance, but the only thing that comes to my mind is gastronomy. Chefs with particularly hairy faces might leave their dishes with an additional seasoning in form of facial hair. However, there are some chefs, like Kurt Scheller, that are famous of their moustaches and beards, so I guess there is no actual problem with beards in the kitchen in reality. I believe it's a matter of proper hygiene in the kitchen, which should be kept by all cooks, no matter how hairy they are.

I don't like MJ Johnson's beard (or maybe it is a moustache?). For me it's an abomination and a barber's nightmare. I thought my moustache is edgy. On a more serious note, I think it's quite funny but I would never-ever do something like that to myself :P

Nice presentation, by the way. Interesting topic.
I don't think that I'm good person to judge it, mostly because I'm not into boys. I think that when beard is well cared and does not look like "Osama beard" it makes male looks better. There are men that beard does not suits very well, so they shave every two days and it's probably a good choice. To sum up - if you car about your beard and it's growing well, sure why not - grow a beard.
I think that in 2017 it may be illegal to not accept beards, tattoos, piercing etc. There are exceptions like food related jobs, I'm not sure if all M.D. are acceptable to have a beard (I know one doctor who is also a BJJ trainer and he has massive beard - you can check him: Maciej Sawosz, Copacabana team).
MJ Johnson’s beard looks silly. I think that most girls are much more into light beard like David Bechkahm style. Girls that I know are most likely to be into light beards. On the other hand there was some time ago trend called "lubersexual" look and it was quite popular, girls liked it.
Beards are quite cool, but I've never understood how people can be proud of having beard. All those beard forums and clubs are quite ridiculous for me. Contest of having the biggest or the most original beard is also quite funny, but there nowadays there are contest that normal person would never think of, so why not. I just don't find it how you can be so proud of things like being vegan, having beard or be Android/iOS user.

Haha, you don't need to be gay to tell if a beard looks good :D

I think that beards are disgusting. I've seen to much food and other dirt on someone's faces.
I believe that beard same as hair, blothes or manicure may be inappropriate so they should also be controlled and owner of the beard shouldn't be angry when he'll be asked to for axapmle trim it.
I find them disgusting, still.
Unknown said…
For me, the beard is unnecessary. In my opinion, when people have beard they look older. The beard is a matter of hygiene. I've often seen someone have food on beards. This is disgusting. As for the workplace, I think the beard should be as acceptable as possible. I don't like the beard of MJ JOHSON. Anyway, from what I know, girls mostly don't like the guy has a long beard: D
Unknown said…
Times have changed. In history, having a beard meant that you are neglected nowadays we have slightly different situation. To be honest in some cases having nice beard means that you are taking care of yourself. If talking about look it really depends because some men look better with beard while other just shouldn’t have it.
Of course that beards should be accepted in workplaces. I don’t think that having a beard may be harmful to someone or something like this.
No, I don’t like his beard. It is unusual and rather stupid for me 😊
Unknown said…
Not everyone looks good with beard. Not everyone's beard grows:) Beard is a good dickey, you can find whole day food there, with the smell of crouse:) I think guy should be shaved. Only five o'clock beard is ok tho.
I fall in love with beards when i was on my first year at university. I know that it is really big thing to care of. What about other people having a beard, i would say, that it depends on them(how old are they and etc.).
Do not understand what do you mean saying "workplaces", but talking about work, everything that you need is to show how good you are at your sphere and that's it. It is stupid to deny the fact, that person who has beard for example, less qualified than other person without it.
I really like this guy on the video and his beard. It's rather funny than unordinary, but it can be a new trend in our daily routine.
Unknown said…
I think beards are cool as long as they are well groomed. However I wouldn't have a moustache. It just looks really weird for me. Some men look good with big, wide beards, some of them don't.

Of course, beards should be accepted in workplaces. If you look neat and it does not interfere with your work you can look the way you want. Only cooks shouldn't have beards, because I don't want their hair in my soup :)

I think that MJ Johnson's beard/moustache is rather funny. On the other hand it shows that he might be very interesting person on first look.
Unknown said…
In my opinion, that people look good with beards or not depends from face. I like when men have a beards but sometimes it looks repulsively. They have to know how to take care of it.
Referring to the second question, for me it's clear that it should be accepted. We are free people and like woman can determine how her hair will be look the same should be with beards.
For me MJ Johnson’s beard is funny but i like it. It is nead and tidy. If he feel good with it, it's great :)
Anonymous said…
I think short beards make man more serious and sexy, but on the other hand I hate when someone has really long one. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's dirty and doesn't look aesthetic.
Why beards would be not accepted in workplace? I don't mind as long as it's really well trimmed.
Unknown said…
Beards are good as long as they are only worn by men :) And also as long as men wash them. I saw a lot of cosmetics for beards (waxes, creams, etc), but I didn't saw any shampoo. Or maybe men use ones for head hair. I'd like to know.

The speaker's beard is funny. He's probably don't wear it like this every day, it wouldn't be comfortable enough. I mean, he made his beard look like this for the show. But he wouldn't sleep, eat and just hang out home like this. I think it's similar to makeup and hairstyles for women.
Filip Sawicki said…
Unless they have some hairstyle on your beard I find beard owners good looking. Usually it is quite challenging to pick a style which suits face and even more to consistently groom own beard. That is why I admire people like MJ Johnson.
Yes, I think that there should be no restrictions about it in any workplace, the same with tattoos and jewellery. It is our own decision how we look and nobody should impose such rules (to some extent in case of correlated danger).
MJ Jonson has funny beard and is fabulous public speaker. I wouldn’t grow such horns as he has, probably because it is way too “fancy” for my style.

My beard is a small one but for me is part of me not just a style. I started just for safe of not shaving since my skin is a bit sensitive. But when I realize that it just suites me I decide not to shave but my parents was against it so haven't had a chance to grow a beard. Everything changed when I moved to Poland. I haven't touch blades for one year and gut somewhat long beard but when you not taking care it look not that good and since I'm lazy person solution for me is to wear short beard and go to barbershop every month.
Marcin Mróz said…
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. In case of kitchen, I think that more risky than having a beard is having long hair. I have impression that beards's hair is somehow stronger than normal hair and it's not so willing to fall off. So I agree with you that it shouldn't be a problem.
Marcin Mróz said…
That's interesting, because I've never seen anyone with beard with food on it. You could as well have some food leftover without beard I think.
I agree with you, but the problem is what's the definition of 'being inapproporiate'. Everyone has different point of view in this case.
Marcin Mróz said…
The thing with looking older is true, I agree with you. But some people like it or it just suit them well and without beard they look like kids. I think that this 'having food on beard' is a bit stereotypical. Nowadays, if you grow a beard, you usually do it to look better so I doubt that someone would leave food on his beard and make it look disgusting.
Marcin Mróz said…
Yes, moustaches for me are also a bit odd. :D I heard a comparison that moustache without a beard is like a soldier without a rifle and I think it's accurate.
Magdalena Popek said…
I think whether or not the beard would look good depends on a style and general appearance of a person. Personally I prefer short beards, nicely trimmed, rather than the long ones (I actually don't like them). But even though I like beards I wouldn't want to have one.

In my opinion allowing having beards depends on a position and general look of an employee. It's hard to imagine a bank employee having long beard, but I think I wouldn't mind it if the person was competent and nice.

I find it really amazing, as I can only imagine how much time does it take daily to take care of such moustache. I don't like it but it doesn't change the fact it is really impressive.
Tomasz Morawski said…
I don't really care. Personally I don't like moustache or beard on myself but I usually have a "moss", since I'm too lazy to shave everyday. Nevertheless, if I had a choice, I'd probably got rid of my facial hair completely.
I've got nothing against beards in workplaces as long as it doesn't disturb from doing your work properly. I also think you should keep your beard tidy if you really want to have it. Unfortunately some people don't do it at all.
For instance, MJ Johnson’s beard looks fine and it can be clearly seen that he spend a lot of time keeping it in good shape. I must say I admire him but at the same time I suggest to find another hobby.

A beard can turn a boy into a man. Unless it's a beard with flowers in it
https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/flower-beards-trend-8.jpg
in such case, only a real man can pull it off. In general, from what I can see, a beard can be quite useful. Men keep everything from cigarettes to Christmas bells in it :)

Workplace-wise I'm lucky, because I come from a work culture that says your work and your character is all that matters. You can wear your knickers on your head and no one would mind if you do your job well.

MJ Johnson’s beard rocks! He is a character.

I'm a proud owner of a beard. Me and my girlfriend think that I look better with it. I prefer natural beards, I'm not a big fan of beards like MJ Johnson has.
In my opinion, what and how you do should be the only thing that matters in a workplace, not how you look. Of course, in some jobs like for example a waiter, your appearance is important, but let's be honest, is beard really so shocking nowadays? I don't think so.

I think some people look better with beards and some not. Some people with berds looks neglected. Some doesn't care about shaving and shave ocasionally, and look neglected. Beards should be acctepted in workplace, because some people look good in beards. I don't like Mr Johnson's beard. It is too big. I find unusual type of beard just ugly. I don't like it. I don't see purpose in breeding beards.
Unknown said…
Personally, I like beards and moustaches, especially the English moustache, El bandito moustaches and Pencil moustaches. To my way of thinking, having moustache or beard may emphasise some handsome features or vice versa hide a scar, for example. However, either a beard or moustaches must be trim.
I think beards can't be accepted in army, though it's ok for other occupations. Btw, I heard that pilots can't have beards.
No, it's a gross exaggeration for me, it looks weird.
Unknown said…
It is tough to answer on the first question, cause it all depends on the look and the beard's style. Generally I do like beards, but sometimes "insanity comes in many forms". In my opinion, beards should be accepted in workplaces as long as they don't present any offensive signs, which can hurt someone feelings. About MJ Johnson's beard, I find it a bit funny to have this kind of beard in his age and I also find these unusual types of beards rather funny than interesting.
I certainly look dashing with mine.

1. A good choice of facial hair can really improve or detract from you looks, just like with any other kind of hair.

2. If it's not a hygienic issue, I don't see a problem with people having beard at word. It would be like saying that ladies can't come to work with curly hair. We already allow tattoos and various levels of piercing, which I'd rate as much more invasive on one's appearance.

3.It's fun to have a bobby, but I would find such beard unpractical.
Foodocado said…
I can't imagine myself with the beard. As long as the beard is well-kept it look nice, but to be honest not everyone look good with it.
I think the beards should be accepted in a workplace. The same applies to the tattoss. I believe the employees should be assesed by their knowlage and skills not their appearance. The times are changing and it's more common to employ such a people.

I like his beard, but to be honest he looks really funny.
Vladlen Kyselov said…
I think that the beard requires a lot of attention to itself and therefore you can not just want and start growing a beard. It is necessary to keep in mind a lot of details "who to" considering beard gowing and continue to monitor it daily. For example I don`t have a beard yet because I would like to have a beautiful one. I have started from preparing my skin to it and everyday shaving to be sure that it grows proportional. I envy to those who already have a nice beard. I like his beard and find unusual beards funny)

1. Personally I don’t like beards. For me men look better without them. Also those neglected ones are not fine for me, this is another extreme not attractive for me.
2. I think people shall look neatly in workplaces, wearing clothes respectively to the situations, business partners. I think this is different in different “workplaces” and it is hard to have opinion common for everybody. The “image” must simply fit to workplace, and this also shall be applied to beards. The employee must do his job, if his image doesn’t disturb him in his work, I think everything is acceptable.
3. Unfortunately, I don’t like neither MJ Johnson’s beard nor other such unusual types of beards. For some people maybe they are funny sometimes, but for me they are neither interesting, nor fanny. As a social phenomenon or original image I tolerate them, but I hope I won’t have to "suffer" something similar in my closest surrounding.
Unknown said…
I would say that beard is not for everyone. I mean one guy looks great but another one terrible. I think that beards should be accepted in workplaces because we have freedom of choice. To be honest it's nothing wrong with beard. If you are asking about MJ Johnson’s beard I would say he looks funny, but in a good kind:)
Jakub Lisicki said…
I don't mind beards, but I don't really look good with the beard myself. Some people look good with it, but it requires a lot of time to take care of it and making sure it's well-kept at all times.
I don't see any reasons why beards would be considered as inappropriate anywhere, with no exception for workplaces. Of course, as long as it's clean and neatly groomed.
I don't like making too much of a big deal out of the topic of beards. That's why I consider unusual beards as a way of showing off with no real reason behind it. It's not really funny. It's pretty weird.

Today beards are fashionable. I think that a lot of men looks better with beards. But big beard is a little strange for me. I think that this big beard disturbs everyday life. How do people eat with these beards like Mr Jonshon's? How does he get a helmet? I think that he disturbs people at the cinema
Marcin Górski said…
Beard is not for everyone. One man can looks nice but another can look funny. In my opinion it depends on facial features. I know that is very fashionable and we can buy a lot of products for it but I don't want to have it.
My workmates have beards and it doesn't disturb me. While they are taking care of it all is okay.
MJ Johnson’s beard is funny for me. Daily life with that kind of beard must be so hard!
Personally, I think beards are not for everyone. You need some time and efforts to grow a nice looking beard. But, overall, in my opinion, growing beard is like a hobby, you either live it or not.
Definitely beards should be accepted in workplaces, without discussions. It's silly to forbid beards.
MJ Johnson’s beard is awesome, but, in general, I find these unusual types of beards rather funny.
Unknown said…
I like beards, and I think they can make one look much better. The condition is that they have to be properly grown, trimmed, be even and dense. 5 hair on the chin does not look good. Patches without hair do not look good. And it has to be taken care of to look good, and it's something many forget about.

When it comes to workplaces, I think it is exactly the same as hair on the hair, in the armpits ot wherever else. It is just there, and it's the way men developed. It's a natural feature and should be treated like one, and not be a subject to being accepted or not.

MJ Johnsons beard/moustache maybe isn't my style, but is impressive nevertheless.

I always wanted to have a beard, but my facial hair is not the best looking for it. If someone have predisposition to have a great beard, and like wearing it, I do not see a problem why should they do not wear it. I never heard that any employer had a problem employing someone with a beard. MJ Johnson has a very interesting beard, I think if I could grow facial hair like him, I would experiment too.
I guess beards are a little bit like a hairstyle - it suits one person and not so much the other. For the same reason I don’t think they should be banned from a work place. I think his beard is rather funny but I do applaud trying something new. It’s always an experience that broadens ones horizons.

Beards. Because I'm a girl, it's hard for me to understand this question. From an aesthetic point of view, I like beards. Particularly well-groomed beards, not those that just grow on the face. Perhaps from a practical point of view, this is not always convenient. When I kiss my boyfriend, she picks up and irritates the skin on my face. Sometimes this hair can penetrate into the mouth. Also, not the most pleasant feeling in the world. So, my attitude to the beards is very twofold.
What about the beards in the workplace. I think it all depends on where the person works. I would not like that in the cafe I cooked a cook with a beard. If a person works in a bank or just in an office, the beard does not always look appropriate. But everything depends on its length and appearance. In any other case, I think that the beard will not interfere the work.
What about MJ Johnson's beard? It's very funny. I would like to touch it and understand how it keeps in this form. And I'm a little sorry for his wife. If my friend made such a mustache, I would laugh all the time. And this is the guarantee of eternal good mood.
Unknown said…
Of course I have heard about beards and I have my own beard. I like a small growth on my face but a beards from this presentation are weird for me. This guy from presentation looks for me like a clown.

I have to say that as a employer I wouldn't hire such person becasue such style attract attention too much.

I think that certainly his beard was funny for me and I don't feel that is an art or something like that. Unfortunetely, I don't feel it and is only a fun fuct for me.
Unknown said…
In my opinion beards are OK in most cases, however there are some men which look better without it as beards sometimes make them look old or untidy. I don’t see a point of banning wearing beards in workplaces unless it is obviously dangerous or disturbing (soldiers, firemen etc.)
I find MJ Johnson ridiculous but I am also impressed with his extraordinary hobby.
Unknown said…
I don't mind a short, nicely trimmed beard. Its more an addition to your overall look than a main part of your image. Long and unmaintained beards look "acceptable" on elders and bums. Plus, they don't make the owner of this beard look like lumberjack but more like a knockoff hipster who thinks he looks manly, and is part of the current trends.
I don't think any part of one's appearance should be taken into account when it comes to recruitment AS LONG AS we are not recruiting for position that requires contact with clients- Its same as with tattoos- If you put them in visible places, then you gotta deal with the consequences and handle ANY opinions on them, not just the good ones. People tend to forget it and then they whine everywhere that "they are being judged by their looks". Well, guess what- if you go running around naked in the public, people will call you a pervert, EVEN if you have PhD in rocket science, because fine feathers make fine birds.
That guy's beard is funny for me, It's making your life difficult just to show your beard to everyone, but if "a man who turned his beard into his way of living." so there is hardly any logic behind it...

I know people who look better with beard and without it. There is no simple answer for this question.

They should be allowed and they are. The problem occurs when someone has so big beard that it starts to disturb him in daily routine. It became impractical and very time consuming in order to remain clean and well-shaped.

I like his beard as it pushed him to do things he never did. It is a little bit too big for a daily usage, but as it is his special sign I understand it.

I don't have any particular opinion about beards, I know that I don't look very good with beard but sometimes I am just lazy to shave myself but I am also aware that many men look very good with their beards. I don't think that beards should be neglected at workplaces - if you do your job correctly and with full commitment I don't care how you look, you can be ugly as hell or have the appearance of an angel, as long as you work hard and I can see the effects of your work I am fully satisfied. I must say that MJ Johnson's beard is rather amusing, when it comes to another example, first thing that comes to my mind are the guys from ZZ Top band and their very very long beards which they grow all their lifes
Actually I think beard is cool most of the time. Super-fancy ones like that guy on the video don't really apply to me, I think it's rather comparable to a stupid haircut - sure, it might look fancy and cool, but it's no longer a cool, gentle beard that adds extra points for every man :).

Even though I hate how itchy it becomes after a while, and I'm shaving anyway every 2 weeks at most. Maybe eventually I consider having one, but for now I like myself more without one, even though I consider beards rather cool.
Not everyone looks good in beard. It is also very problematic in most sports - even swimming or football gets annoying when you have big beard. Tried it. Beard should be trimmed to the maximum and used only if it fits you. Do not get involved that there is a time for a beard now and every guy should have it. As I am looking at this guy it is hard for me to imagine how he kisses his woman...
Unknown said…
I don't mind other people beards. Must admint that it does fit with some people better than others though. As long as it doesn't get in a way of work I don't mind them at workplaces either. Unusual beards are kinda funny but I can't imagine how timeconsuming it is to take care of it and keep it in a good "shape".
Marcin Mróz said…
Yes, some beards just look like they got out of control ;) I like your attitude towards MJ Johnson beard, I think that everyone should care only about whether they feel good with particular beard, hairstyle or clothing not about what others would think about it.

I believe that having a thick and well-groomed beard can significantly change the appearance of a person. In my opinion, it adds a few years, but it can certainly add charm. I never heard that because of the beard, someone had problems in the work place. MJ Johnson has an unusual beard, but certainly very interesting.

I think that not everyone looks good in beard. I have many friends which has beard and they looks good.
I think it depends on the job you do. If you are Santa in supermarket... I'm joking :D But there are jobs that beard is inappropriate like official.
I really don't like MJ Johnson's beard. For me he looks like a circus character. I think that he has right to have this beard but I will never have beard like this.
Facial hair can radically alter the way a man looks, whether it’s a little stubble or a full-on beard.
Statistics say that men as more attractive when they clean-shaven.
But otherwise, if u have a beard, people will estimate you like a high-ranking social position and command respect over other men in the community.
The thing with beards is that if you can't grow a proper one then just don't bother. If I'll ever be able to grow a full beard I would just stop shaving until I drop dead, because I really hate to shave every day, but I would rather not walk with pubes on my face. I don't see anything wrong with wearing a beard to work, it's just like having hair or eyebrows, nothing particularly wrong with that. When it comes to the guy from the video and his beard I really don't care, just like I wouldn't mind a random dude walking with his balls out as long as he doesn't try some further interaction.
In my opinion beards look good only when people really take care of them, if they aren’t the owner often looks like a hobo. I think that beards should be accepted in workplaces, and to be honest I haven’t heard about a place which doesn’t accept them. They are only inappropriate if you look like your beard is caused by your neglect and you look like a homeless person. I think that MJ Johnson beard is ..different. I don’t really like it, it looks weird.

In my personal opinion the beard could turn guy into a man and opposite - man who shaved his beard could turn into young guy who will be asked by cashier in a supermarket about identity card :)

Beards are okay. It’s just a part of our look. To be honest, I can’t imagine myself with a beard. Maybe someday I will grow one? I don’t know.
Somebody’s appearance with beard depends on face shape. It just fits or not.
Of course beards should be accepted in workplaces, because why not? As I said, it’s just a part of our look. Even tattoos should be accepted, I am really big fan of them.
Do I find his beard unusual? For sure, but there is nothing wrong in it. If he feels comfortable with it - just keep it and rock it out.

MJ Johnson looks a little bit stupid for me, but also funny.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
