Music has been a part of our lives throughout centuries. It has evolved from just clapping hands and beating stones in a particular rhythm through performing sounds using different kinds of instruments in company of human voice to modern, electronic music created by computers. Every civilization with a culture has had its own concept of it and produced various kinds of instruments. But no matter how it has been created, the reason why it has existed are the feelings it gives us.
I think that all of you have a favorite type of music that you enjoy most, that makes you feel good or that you identify yourself with. But have you ever wondered how it can affect your mind and body?
Music actually is very beneficial for your psychological and physical health. It helps you reduce stress, increase concentration, make you feel less fatigue or even make you smarter. It is scientifically proven that listening to music has a positive impact on the activity of your brain and could lead to the increase of creativity or repair brain damage. I believe that everyone heard about the idea of pregnant mothers playing classical music to their unborn kids so that they would be smarter. It is based on the so called “Mozart effect” which is a set of hypotheses that indicates that listening to classical music (especially Mozart) in childhood leads to beneficial effects in mental development. Even better effects could be seen in people who started learning to play instruments at an early age. This process changes the brain structure by increasing grey matter volume in various brain regions and strengthening connections between them. It also leads to bigger capacity of memory, better coordination and maths skills. Albert Einstein asked why he was so smart, replied that it was because he played the violin.
But going back to music itself, apart from mental health benefits caused by music, we can experience its upsides also in our physical condition. There are many studies indicating that listening to music while exercising can increase your endurance, reduce muscle tension and improve coordination. Music has also direct impact on our body chemistry – it can lead to secretion of some specific chemicals. For example, loud and rhythmic music can give you adrenaline, which will keep you awake during a long, boring ride. Contrary, calm and relaxing music can help you get asleep by reducing nervous system activity, decreasing anxiety and blood pressure.

My favourite genre is probably rock. I'm huge fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers, my favourite one for sure. I also love Beatles, White Stripes, Oasis, Pearl Jam and John Mayer. There are tons other bands/musician that I really like, but those mentioned are my favourites. All of that doesn't mean that I listen only to rock. My second favourite music type is a rap. When I was younger I used to listen to Eminem alongside to Nirvana or System of a Down, that was my beginning with rap music. I'm quite open to new things, that's why I'm not listening only "good old school" rap but also some newer ones. Despite American rap, my favourites are French rap (IAM, check it if you don't know them) and Polish rap (Quebonafide for example).
Despite rock and rap, which I listen to while having free time, there are genres of music that I listen to during specific time, for example: classical music for studying/coding, metal music for relaxing etc. I try to be open minded and giving a shoot to every music genre, that's way there are a few Reggae or Pop songs on my phone.
I've tried to learn how to play on guitar but it turns out that I'm total anti-talent when it comes to creating music, that's why I stopped doing it really quickly.
I don't have got favorite music genre - I like various genres. I'm listening different music at parties than in work, I listen something else when I'm writing some document and when I;m playing at the table. What is some, what I'm listening to depends on my humor.
Oh yes, I was playing at some instruments - I even was in school band! I played triangle and cymbals. When I was adult I've learnt to play 'Kitten climbed on the fence' on baby's piano and then I played it at a normal one (I don't remebmer how to play it now)
By the way, you have nice taste in music. Do you also listen to artists that combine rock and rap? Rage Against Machine is my favourite one performing this kind of music. However I don't like rap itself, it's too monotonous for me. But of course it's the matter of taste. :)
Music has a very positive effect on me. I don't have one favorite genre of music. So I learned to play the piano. I played for 6 years but it is not for me.
I have few particular music genres that I like most and often listen them but I’m keen on any kind of music if only it appeals to me.
As most of us I’ve tried to learn to play on instrument. It was guitar. I’ve even managed to learn to play one song but I decided to change my hobby.
When I was a kid, I was playing on the piano. Beautiful instrument, I miss....
I don't have A favorite music genre, I like various types of music. From big artists to indie music, from rock to classical, it just has to be good. I don't hate any kind of music just because of it's genre as I don't judge the book by its cover. Lately I even started listening to some Ukrainian rap even though this is definitely not my favorite genre.
When it comes to instruments I played piano for many years, as well as the guitar, even though I wouldn't say I was particularly good at it. Mediocre maybe. I also tried the violin, saxophone, and the drums. The latter was pretty recently and is something I'd want to continue when I have some more time, along with playing the guitar. Learning how to play is very time consuming and challenging, but very rewarding when you actually start doing well.
I'm listening everything, it can be pop, rap, rock, it does not matter.
My first musical instrument that i used to play is guitar. I was playing guitar for 1 year, but now, don't have time anymore. One day i tried piano, but it was a bad idea - as my mom said, i don't have a rhythm :)
I don't have my favourite music genre. I really like movie soundtracks and my favourite composer is Hans Zimmer. He composed music for "The Lion King", "Gladiator" or "Interstellar" and many many more.
I have been playing on guitar for 5-6 six years, but in high school I decided to stop. Playing on any instrument requires many hours of practicing and I couldn't do that. I was too lazy unfortunately. I still have guitars in my room but I play on them only from time to time. I love how piano sounds and I wish one day I will learn to play it.
Actually I don't have any favorite genre. I just listen to anything I like. It depends of my mood.
When I was a kid I got a keyboard for Christmas and I was 'playing' it. When I was older I wanted to learn how to play guitar, but I think it demands a lot of patience so I resigned.
I am mostly metal guy. I listen mostly heavy, power, industrial and death metal. I also like tribal music, mostly because of rhythm. In general, genre for me is not important as a harmony between rhythm, music and lyrics in the song. I definitely hate most of the pop-music, because it is crap, though.
But I totally agree with the part of your post where you write about exercises. Music helps a lot.
Yes, I tried to play the drum. It was green and nice. And I was 5 or so. In the end, my mom took the drum away, then she realized I wouldn't be a great musician.
I like rock music, (animated) movie soundtracks and I love Irish traditional music. The last one can brighten up even the saddest day. Once I was in Ireland in a true old Irish pub and there were a "band" of 4 elderly people playing and singing Irish songs. I entered the pub, heard the music and started crying immediately. It has always been my dream (since I was 8) and the fact it came true... I just couldn't believe it. It was definitely an unforgettable experience.
I tried to play the guitar, but I didn't like it. I've always wanted to play the piano, but didn't have the opportunity to learn. I strongly regret it. Instead of playing an instrument I sing.
I don't really have favourite genre - it depends on my mood. Most of the time it's the pop you can hear on every radio, but I also like rap, rock or some alternative music. Sometimes I even listen to polish "feast songs" but I need to use headphones for that.
Besides flute I learnt to play on when I was a child, I tried to learn playing on the guitar and piano, but I tremendously failed. I've also tried to play something on my brother's ocarina but it turned out to be too complicated for me.
I’m a big music fan and I always like learning new things connected with music.
Listening to music is not only my hobby, it’s a way of life. I strongly believe that music can affect every aspect of our nature. Of course, an impact can be always either good and bad, but in the case of music I guess the positive effects exceed the negative ones.
It would be extremely difficult to choose one music genre to be my favourite. I really enjoy rock, metal and pop, as well as hip hop, r’n’b and even classical music. In fact, I can hardly find any kind of music I dislike. When I was a kid, my mother made me learn to play the piano. I didn’t like it at all, but I have decided to try the drums recently, to the despair of my neighbors :)
I would really like to learn to play on piano. Unfortunately, at this moment I don't have enough time for that.
2. Probably indie rock, but I'll listen to anything I consider good enough.
3. I tried to learn to play guitar as a teenager, but all that came of it was my prowess in guitar hero games :)
I don't have favorite genre. Mostly I listen to music depending on my currently mood. When I want to be more concentraited I like listening to calm music, when I have a bad mood I like music which bring to me memories. I used to learn playing piano for couple of years. Now, I am afraid I wouldn't play any track.
2. My lately discovered music genre is old-fashioned “Italo-disco” as very positively acting on everybody. I also like French and Italian hip-hop. I feel younger listening to it, and it helps me to train foreign languages.
3. I have never tried to learn playing any instrument, because I am not musically talented. But my kids do, my 10-years old son has been playing the piano since he was 5, his 6-years old sisters have been learning this for 2 years. They love music lessons, they always wait for them. Playing the piano seems to be their way to deal with emotions, taking problems more easy, bringing more calmness to their lives.
I have once tried to learn how to play on the piano but it was too hard for me to deal with.
Of course I listen to music. It's very important in my life. I finished Jazz Music School. I've play the drums for 13 years but I must learn other instruments. Today I have two bands. I record CDs and play concerts. I'm a musician and I listen to all types of music. I must learn a lot of kinds of music. I think that real musicians aren't valued. Muscian's life is not fair because you spend 50 000 zl you travel 500km to play a concert you learn most of your life how to play and you earn 50 zl.
I listen to many music genres, but my favourite one is classical. I don't listen to it constantly, but I always enjoy it the most. Sometimes it's really calm, relaxing and sometimes it's really stimulating as it comes to terms of learning or getting some work done.
I was playing the guitar for a couple of years, but now I don't have any time for it anymore. I'm also a bit tired of it, but I guess that someday I'll start playing on this or some other instrument again.
Oh man, why did you stop? :D I don't think that it requires that much time, especially, if you already have some basics and know how to play. I also don't have that much time to play guitar as I had when I was in primary school, but I'd never decide to stop playing it at all. I think it's really fun and I'm trying to find some time to play everyday, at least 15 minutes. ;)
Usually, I'm listening RAP but it depends on my mood. Sometimes, I like to turn on some rock songs.
Yes, I had some guitar lessons as a teenager. It was very hard for me and that's why I stopped it. Now, I'm having a lot of duties but I will come back to it! I promise! :)
When I was in primary school I have been playing in school mandolin orchestra for three years. I didn’t like it most of the time back then to be honest as our music teacher was very demanding and we had to know all the pieces by heart. It required from me a lot of practicing and memorizing every single day but now, after years, I am convinced that it had a great impact of my learning process and helped me to obtain better results in my further life.
Usually, I prefer to listen techno, soul or rap, but in most cases , it depends on the mood or comapany.
I have tried to learn to play the guitar, but now I don't have a passion for it. Maybe, in one day, I will succeed in it.
I think there aren't people in the world who do not like music. Music influences our life and creates a mood. You can listen to music while you work. All, of course, depends on the music. It can set you up to work hard and can get you treated. It could be the neighbor's vile music behind the wall, early Sunday morning. And then you want to get up and go kill because you can not sleep anymore. So, I think music has read our life and we can not escape from it.
It's hard to say which music I like. Probably all. Except for turnips. I even do not know why. And also techno. It pulls my brain and just makes me close my ears.
My experience playing the musical instruments ended sadly. I played half an hour on the guitar and everyone who sat around realized that I was hopeless. I think that creating music requires talent. Magic abilities or something like that.
I don't have one particular type of music which I like. Of course I can say that I like blues, rock, alternative rock but I listen also pop or classical music. I think that in my case it depends on time or my frame of mind.
I play on the piano sometimes but now I don't have much time for it. I promised myself that when I will finish my studies I will back to playing on the piano. I have also tried a harmonica which is also very exciting instrument. I can play some songs on it but I can say that I am only an amateur.
No, I don't have a favourite type of music. It depends on a day, activity, mood or weather. Mostly it is pop, house, trance and a little bit of rock music.
I tried to go to music school when I was in primary school, but they said that I am not the best candidate :D
When I was young I participated in a course of playing keyboard - I practiced it for like 5 years I guess? I didn't learnt a lot due to my age and rather medium interest, but I did learn over a hundred songs if I remember right.
Of course. I am listening to different kind of music when I am trying to learn or focus on my job - it is usually instrumental music or waterfall noise not to distract me. When I'm driving the music is usually hard (Metallica, Ramstein) to keep me focus and gives me a small adrenaline rush. When I need to relax a good classical music or opera - La Traviata - Libiamo :)
Do you have your favorite music genre?
As written above.
Have you ever tried to learn to play any musical instrument? If yes, what were your experiences?
I tried piano but currently I don't remember anything of it (tried few years ago).
I've started playing piano as a kid, had an episode with grandpa's accordion haha. Never really got good at it, discontinued it, went back, I some play from time to time, I'm still bad but if I get one song right I love playing it.
Yes I like listening to music. And it has positive effects on me. When I'm working out I always listen faster songs. I like rap. But I used to listen rock, punk. I used to play guitar but now I don't have time to practise.
I don’t have one favorite music genre, if I like a song I like it, if I don’t I don’t, no matter the genre.
I have learned how to play a guitar, and I hated it SOOOOO much. It was just dumb attempt by my parents to make me happy against my will.
My favourite bands are KoRn, Gojira and Slipknot.
When I saw Korn video for the first time, I was like: „How is this THAT heavy?!”. I mean guitar riffs of course. Then I started to play guitar and now after all these years I’m rocking it on Munky’s signature 7 string guitar. It’s awesome!
It's usually polish rap or pop. Sometimes also disco-polo.
When I learn something new, I prefer silence, but when I do something easy for me I usually listen to music.
My favourite music genre is rap. Especially polish rap for example OSTR, Pokahontaz, Kękę, Joka, Quebonafide and many others.
I have a music lessons in primary school like everyone but I wasn't very good at it. We played the cymbals and flute. Honestly it was more fun than real learning.
