Week 5 [13-19.11.17] EA Sport FIFA (Motion Capture)

A few years ago when I was playing FIFA I was wondering how it is possible that not very famous footballer who moves in a characteristic way looks like in reality. It turned out it was because of Motion Capture.

What is Motion Capture?

Motion Capture (mocap) - is technique used in movies and computer games in which you capture 3D moves of actors and save them on the computer.

It turned out that they invited most footballers to EA studio and they recorded them with mocap.

EA sports is Canadian company from Vancouver. This company is famous worldwide and employs 2500 people. Company campus has got 37 thousand m2. It is most of all two buildings, one for employees who work only on FIFA. They make all animations in the game in hangar size of football pitch. There are 132 cameras, more than 10 monitors and special equipment. 25 employees use them at the same time. Hangar is enormous, there isn't bigger studio in the whole world. The idea is that footballers must feel like on real pitch. They must have space to gain momentum and shoot the ball. When they record , they put real grass in the studio.

In Canada they want their employees to be happy. Apart from tradicional canteen, they have two free Starbucks cafes, library , games room and cinema. They have a lot of pitches for different games and gym. Company pays for hairdresser, drycleaner and car wash.

What is more workers can come with their dogs. It means that more than 200 animals come to campus every day.

Questions:
Have you ever wondered how they make these realistic moves of footballers in FIFA?
Did you know that Mocap is such enormous project?
Do you like to organize small tournament in FIFA with friends at the weekend sometimes?

Actually I knew it before, because I'm quite big fan of Fifa games. I mean, maybe it's not a great game, but every football fans play it anyway.
When it comes to playing Fifa with friends, it's something that I love. I'm quite sad that nowadays games companies are focusing on online playing and there is such a few games that allows to play multiplayer offline. Still fifa does it, despite focusing on FIFA ultimate team, so it's nice that this doesn't change. What is your favourite fifa? Also I do not want to sound racist but FIFA has some problem with black players and there is always somone to much "OP" like Doumbia, Benteke or Martial. What dou you think about it? Cheers.

Fifa is the only game I play, but to be honest, I've never wondered how the moves of the players are made. I was aware of the Mocap technology as I've seen videos about making of Guitar Hero and registering some special scenic moves of the artists. But I didn't consider Mocap to be used in Fifa and the fact that they use it playing on the real pitch suprised me a bit. But I think that this professional attitude to the making of this game makes Fifa the best football game on the market and I really enjoy playing it with my friends.

When I was younger and had less knowledge about technology and such things I’ve always wondered how it is possible. Now when I exactly know what technology do they use I am wondering how did someone create such technology. This is awesome and also the extent of mocap project seems great to me. It has to be pleasure to participate projects like this.
Generally since me and my brother have discovered fifa we regularly meet to play whole season so we have to spend about 20 hours. We often try not to sleep and it is easy because this game is so entertaining.

I worked in a company, that is creating video games and i was wondered, how they did it. I heard something about mocap,i have friends who are fans of it. I'm not a guy who is interested in that kind of discussion, especially FIFA, but watching how it works - breathtaking.

Very interesting article :) I never thought about it. I have never heard motion capture. The fife play almost every day :). Weekly over the internet and every other weekend we meet with friends :)

I am a big fan of FIFA games and I've been playing FIFA since 2006. The graphics improves every year and it makes me excited. I knew that the company uses high technologies but I didn't know about it in details. Now I know more about Mocap and it's really awesome that some people make great efforts for us.
Yeah, I love organising small tournaments at weekends just becase I consider it's a great way to spend free time with friends.

I’m not a huge fan of FIFA, but I do like to play it once in a while. The really frustrating thing for me and I guess most of FIFA owners is that a new game is released each and every year and it only has minor differences compared to previous one. Obviously if you take a look at the newest release and compare it to the one created 5 years ago the change can be quite apparent. Graphics is one of the most important parts of FIFA (at least for EA) so this makes no sense for them to lose customers trust. However, I like the fact that technology is moving forward and gamedev industry is using motion capture to improve visual quality of their product just as in movies.

At work we have FIFA on Xbox One .... but i have never played, because I'm not a huge fan of Fifa and football in General. But this post was very interested me, because I have never interested how it is created.

Do I like to organize small tournament in FIFA with friends at the weekend sometimes? Hell no. I don't like football. It's just a bunch of people running after a ball. I do understand playing for fun, but watching or playing games whereit's core gameplay is running andkicking ball is jus laughable to me.
And yes i knew that motion capture is complicated and big project. And no i have never wondered how they make moves of football players so realistic.
Unknown said…
Waaaaaaaaaaat? I think you never tried to understand football and I think that you've never played football. what's sports you prefer?
I have never though about how they make realistic moves of footballers in FIFA. But know I know and it is really an interestic knowledge.
I heard about mocap seasions but the amount of work has suprised me. But I guess it has to be really enjoyable.
I'm not a big fan of FIFA games (last time I played fifa was about 8 years ago (whoa I just realised how much time passed since my last match)).

Some time ago I had a boyfriend who loved playing FIFA (as most of boys) so that I had to play it too. Actually I hated it. Every time we were playing he had to remind me how to use all of those buttons.
I have never wondered about those realistic moves at FIFA, but I find out motion capture after Avatar movie.
In my town there is a pub which used to organize FIFA tournaments. Actually I liked to watch it but they stopped doing it I think.
Yes! I was alaways wondering how they are making such a beautiful animations, but not only in FIFA but mainly in Witcher series games. Thanks to your article now i know. No, i didn't know that Mocap was such a enormous and complicated project. That's fascinating how animations systems have improved over the years. FIFA is one of my favourie games on consoles and I adore spending my free time playing it with my friends, espesially 2v2 game mode. However, to be honest i'm really bad at it. :)

In my opinion that is the best multiplayer game. „Ultimate team” is very refined mode and that’s way it is so popular. I spent a lot of time on that but I’ve never thought about how EA make realistic moves. Thanks to your article I know about Mocap and it’s very interesting. It’s good to know how your best game is creating.

I knew about Motion Picture before because I have played a lot of FIFA games in my life and of course I like to play tournaments with my friends. I also think millennial fathers will play EA Fifa game with their children like our parents played board games with us. Family meeting with obligatory FIFA tournament. Sounds great ;)
Never had a chance to wonder why some characters in games look so realistic when it comes to their moves and faces all of it because, i had already read about motion capture technology before.
YEs motion capture is a huge investment and present way of doing things right. Witcher 3 was a great example of using motion capture to record and recreate movements from real life into game cinematic and character movement. It has its drawbacks its a huge time sink to get it right and having it rushed can end up just like MassEfect Andromeda, where it turned out awful to say at best.
As for Fifa , not a huge fan mainly because of it yearly system which milks money off gamers with what could be done through update, im talking about releasing virtually same content under new game price-tag with no real progression to actual franchise. This aspect + EA shady practices when it comes to young football talent make Fifa as a game for me not acceptable.

I already know about this technology, because one time I have asked myself a questions, how is it possible to make so realistic moves without any kind of model, so when I have read about this technology I has become pretty obvious to me how is it possible. I am not a huge fan of FIFA games, but challenges with friends have always been a fun part of every our meeting with old good friends.

This is not new and has been used in many games and animated movies. I've been wondering about it a few years ago, and already then read lots about it, therefore I am fully aware of how big these projects are. I am not a FIFA fan, so I can't really relate to the last question. Instead, I can elaborate a bit on another technology used in games, i.e. Laser scanning.

Laser scanning is extremely useful in games (or apps), which replicate any kinds of environments that are present in the 'real world'. In my case the most interesting area is racing games, where laser scanning is at the moment revolutionising the industry. Since a few years back developers have used laser scanning to replicate real racetracks in games. At first you might think, that it does not make any sense, because it is just a bit of straight road and some curves at certain angles. That is not entirely true, as laser scanning lets you make 100% true models of environments including exact hillclimbs, exact tilts, but even the exact texture of the tarmac, bumps, holes, cracks and even minor ruggedness of the road. This, in combination of the power of todays computers and advanced physics used in games lets developers create realistic simulations, letting the user actually experience the real racetrack virtually. The same goes of course to making 3D models of existing buildings, roads, sceneries etc.
I have heard about Motion Picture before, probably because of some documentary about animation techniques. I’m not a huge fan of FIFA games, or video games particularly, buy I think that FIFA tournament could be a fun event, for some people to play and for other just to watch.

I couldn't care less about football and fifa. I don't know what I hate more - the sport itself, its popularity or video games about them. What's funny is that both games and the sport have something similar about them that was not intended - staleness. Nothing ever changes in any of them. Video games are almost the same with every edition and if you watched a football game from 10 years ago and now without any background information and names of players you would not be able to recognize which one is the older one. I even got bored writing this comment.

Yes, I know this technology. That’s how The Witcher’s realistic moves / fighting styles are made too ;).
First time I’ve heard about it was when Andy Serkins was creating Gollum to The Lord of the Rings.
I’m not a big fan of FIFA. I’m more like RPG/moba games guy, but when it comes to play some tournament with friends, we’re playing Fightnight or EA UFC.

EA, cancer developer and stockist.
But true is that this is amazing how far technology went ahead, allowing to create such a "realistic" games and movies.
If anyone interested in how much does it takes to create a single frame in game(gta 5):

I played FIFA and heard about Mocap and was guessing that it was made like that. One of my favorite games is based on Mocap, it is our native Witcher. I'm not a big fan of football, but when I was younger I liked to play FIFA with my friends, but never I had orginized a tournament with them.
I'm actually just not a big fan of FIFA, and like motion capture its smth so common in our times, all expensive and nice films and series filmed with this technology, like a Deadpool, Ironman, Game of Thrones and other. So I guess its pretty good idea to use the same technology for games creating if that so good.

Actually I am big FIFA fan and i knew that they are using motion capture. I love how players move in game, its really awesome! I was suprised when i saw campus, I thought it is smaller. It looks like they spend a lot of time by improving this game. I organize small tournament in FIFA with my friends, mostly every 2 weeks but sometimes more often. I am playing FIFA since i was young.

I've never liked to play FIFA. But It's impressive how they create this game. I heard something about Mocap but I didn't think that it's so huge project.

FIFA is the most popular football game. I never wondered how this game was designed. Yes, I happen to meet my friends and play a little tournament

I didn't wonder how they make such accurate and enormous moves in FIFA and other games. I just thought that it is modeled by game developers. But after few years I watched some movie in TV that enlighted me. Mocap is enourmous project, I thought that is isn't that enourmous. Now I know I was wrong. I like playing FIFA with friends, but I don't play FIFA at home alone so I don't know especially much about how to play.

I've heard about it before, and I'm surprised it might seem new to someone - It was used in many movies before. Go check the shots from Pirates of the Caribbean, where "some guys in strange gray suits are running around", that was really big project, compared to some footballers doing tricks: http://i.imgur.com/CKyBD.jpg
>Do you like to organize small tournament in FIFA with friends at the weekend sometimes?
I'm not a big fan of sports games, as well as my friends, so we play some other games.

I have wondered how they make these realistic moves of footballers in FIFA and I am familiar with this tech. I do know that Mocap is such enormous tech and it is very common to use one in many games and movies, especially with large amount of action. Organizing small tournaments in FIFA with friends at the weekends is what I was doing in the middle and high school. I got to say that was fun, but it also can get boring really quick.

Actually I've never wondered about how they make the realistic moves of footballers in FIFA, because I've just never played FIFA. Anyway it's good to know it, because I would never say motion capture is used to do it. Recently I've been rather interested in stop motion so I've haven't read much about Mocap.

I'm not a fan of football, but I like CG. Some days ago I asked an animator from Dreamworks about Motion Capture. I was wondering about the role of animators. Should they worry about losing their jobs? His answer was very surprising. He said companies like Disney or Pixar try not to use Motion Capture and animate everything by hands. It's strange because it's more time-consuming. The result is better, though. But it depends.

I was conscious how game producers create animations for their games so it wasn't a big surprise for me. I am not a speciallist in this kind of technology so after this presentation I could get to know some interesting things e.g. about a Mocap project. I don't have a FIFA but when I was younger I played a lot in this game for many many hours. When I will be able to buy a console for this game I will gladly to play with my firends on a couch like old times when online games didn't exists.
I saw a lot of movies of making of FIFA and what techniques they are using. I love that they copied every players specific movement. The way the Modric is dribbling and moving his hair with his hand all the time, Ronaldo's while ball just sticks to his leg and Lewandowski with a finger in the mouth after goal. That makes this game really awesome and few years passed by and PES for me is way much worse currently and less realistic than FIFA.

I love playing Fifa game. I've been playing it for a long time in my life. This is my favorite game. In childhood there was no other game that would give me more pleasure. However, I never thought about how the players' movements were mapped. For me it was a very interesting article.

I honestly expected that Mocap is such a big project. FIFA is refined in the smallest detail. Thousands of people are working on making this game perfect.

I like meeting with my friends and play Fifa. It could be entertainment for all weekend. During tournaments the game is even more interesting. It is really hard to stop playing FIFA on the console.

I am not a huge fan of a FIFA series, but the modern ways of the motion capture animations are astonishing.

I have seen that in this game real football players are used to show moves of virtual soccer players as natural as possible. Motion capture is the only one technology which allows us to realise the dream about mapping human moves. I didn't organise common meetings with my mates because I'm not into FIFA.
Unknown said…
Nothing new. You can use kinect capture your motion and make such realistic moves in your own game.
But let me tell you about EA, those greedy punks don't deserve gamers respect. Ruined Battlefront for the last time. Not going to buy a game from them anymore. Not FIFA sadly either.
Unknown said…
EA want to add something new special things to gameplay but the most of this innovation works terible. You can score goals run from your half. Ok graphics is much better then previous year but EA should looking for problems in gameplay. Its very annoying when you try to score goal by passes and after your goal your opponent score goal from his half just with one player. Maybe in next patch fifa change something and nerf some ovepower player.

Now a days gaming has become so competitive that in order to make game better from its competitors, lot of new stuff is being used. Motion Capture being one of them.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
