Week 7 [08.05-15.05.2017] Digital Nomad

“You can work anywhere you have access to the Internet, right? So, why are you still here?” this question was asked by many people who decided to become a digital nomad. One of theme Pieter Levels was motivated to move out and change his life. The reason why he did it was quite simple, he wasn't happy with what he was doing so far. " Everything had become one big routine" he said. Despite being self-sufficient,  he missed something that made him feel so. That's why he decided to buy a ticket to Bangkok and then his adventure began. Now he is travelling while working on his start-ups.
One of  his idea was to create a social network where "nomads" can share their experience with  each other. He knew well what might be helpful for these people. The site is called nomad list you can find there the best places to live. If you are interested in living in, e.g. Paris, you probably would like to know what is the cost of living, speed of the internet, freedom of speech, how many people speak English or where to go to paint the town red.

What does digital nomad really mean? By definition it is a person who wanders, exchanges information and communicates with others without moving around - using technology such as the Internet. And also a person who can work anywhere with the same tools. Such workers typically work remotely generally from coffe shops, public libraries or co-working spaces - Wikipedia

Where many people there are many stories, everyone may have different reasons but the goal is one – to become a digital nomad. The people who are not attached to any place but travel and earn a living remotely. That kinda romantic lifestyle has its pros and cons. It requires a lot of discipline to finish started projects and stick to the schedule. Frequent change of residence may be confusing. That's why you need to have worked out habits to maintain balance in your life. On the other hand, you have a lot of freedom at work and private life. Not everyone would like this but there are  many people who can spent the rest of their lives living that way.

For anyone who does not want to travel alone was formed a community called "hacker paradise". This is a group of people that gathers designers, entrepreneurs and developers. They have a common apartment and a working space.

The idea of working in an office is no longer appealing these days.  More and more people are working from anywhere they want. They work online on their laptops, as a freelancer or entrepreneurs. The world is changing. You don't need to be stuck in one place or one company.  I think we can see today this social and cultural revolution. All the past rules that our parents or grandparents have had  to deal with may soon be out of existence.

Thanks to achievements of technology there are many factors that make this change easier nowadays. For example, social media like Facebook, more and more co-working spaces, open borders between countries, cheaper flights, and so on. Of course, there are also difficulties such as taxes (in each place they are different ) and visas.

Questions:
1. Have you ever heard about digital nomads before?
2. Do you know someone who lives this way?
3. What do you think about of such a lifestyle?
4. Would you like to travel and work remotely without being attached to a single place?
5. Do you think that in the future more and more people will decide to become digital nomads?

1.No, i didn't heard about digital nomads before. The most interesting part is the "hacker paradise" community :-)
2.And I haven't such friends.
3 and 4. Well, it's good idea to work from anywhere, but not from public places - it's hard to concentrate when there is a lot of noise beside. So I would prefer travelling, but working from hotel.
5.Yes, because almost everyone are working from laptops, next move can be permission from the government to allow work from another country without entry(or something similar).

I have never heard about such people before, but what they do sound awesome.
In my opinion people who live this way are happy because they can work and travel in the same time. Many people dream about a huge travel around the world, but they can't work in such way.
Personally I wouldn't like to travel and work, because it matters to me where am I while working. I have problems with concentration while being in unknown places. Sometimes I can't even focus at school and I prefer to do something at home.
Nowadays a great amount of work can be done from anywhere so in my opinion in the future people will get crazy about such a lifestyle.

Of course I have heard about digital nomads. I have seen a lot of programs about these people.
Personally I don't know anybody who lives this way.I think that it would be difficult to live this way. I prefer to work in one place but who knows what will be in the future. This lifestyle is for sure very interesting but in fact you don't know what will happen tomorrow. I think that in future the number of people who are nomads will be the same. This life is very lonely.

I really like idea of digital nomads. You can work everywhere you are.
I don't know anyone who is working this way.
I believe that such solution, as always, has got pros and cons. Pros - you're not attached to place, you can travel&work, but there is no border between life and work - you can't just leave and have some time, because as a nomad you probably don't have got strict hours of work, f.e. 8-16, so people may call you actually whenever

I heard about the digital nomad movement, for anyone interested - check out the site nomadlist.com They have a huge community. A few years ago I considered living in the same way since I was a freelance developer and I had no static workplace. I gave up on this idea because I get tired of continuous traveling, after a month of traveling you just want to go "home", and there should be a place where you can return - hotels, apartments for rent and hostels don't give you a "home" feeling. When you travel without any pause new places are not interesting anymore, you're just tired.

So I guess it's just not for everyone. For example working in Thailand on the sea coast sounds fun, but there's a crazy humidity, it's actually hot and you can't find basic products like milk in the local stores.

Personally, I haven't heard about digital nomads before, none of my friends live this way and I wouldn't like such life either. I'd be under stress all the time while moving to new place that I forgot sth as it often happens to me. I totally agree with Paulina that such style of working could lead to loosing the life-work balance. What's more, Ihor hit the nail on the very head - I believe everyone needs "home" place to some extent.

Thank you for your comment. It's true that it depends on what someone like. It would be nice if goverments in the future will make new law for digital nomads

Thanks for your opinion :) I think that many people have the same problem with concentration. Maybe it's a matter of a practice? I don't have enough experience in this field so I don’t know.

It is interesting what you said. In my opinion the nomads will be more in the future because more and more people are working remotely. This is interesting movement but I don't think it is a perspective for the rest of the life but maybe for a short period. Always you can travel with someone if you wish.
Adam Paśniczek said…
Thank you for your opinion. I agree with you that there is no border between life and work. Maybe it is look so perfect but for sure you have to put a lot of effort into it. I guess people who decided to live that way they know the consequences of such lifestyle and they accept it with all the cons and pros.
Adam Paśniczek said…
It's nice that you share your experience. Like you said it depends on what you like. Not everyone would travel for all the time. You have to have a place that you call home where you can come back.
Adam Paśniczek said…
I agree with You and Ihor that there should be a place to which you can return. Without this it is easy to lose the ground under the feet especially if someone travels a lot.

It is first time I have hear about digital nomads and I don't know anyone who live like it. It sounds cool you can travel the whole world and work remotely. But I think people are more productive, when they have one place to work in which they are used to. It improves your concentration and there are less things which distract you.
It's interesting way of living. I think that I could try it for some time, but after longer period of time I would miss my family and my friends. Yes, you can still communicate with them over the phone or internet, but it is not the same. I think that that kind of living is for people who are really lonely and have nothing and no one to left behind - simply not happy, or for people for whom the most important thing in a life is to being free. This is great that everyone could find his place in the world.

I am aware of existence of such people. I have been considering working this way, but I think that i need to gain some experience before starting to work remotely. I don't have idea for startup that i could manage remotely, and I don't have enough experience to get remote job. In the future I think I will consider such opportunity, it seems like good way of life. I think that in the future, many people will be working this way. Nowadays, more and more jobs do not require worker to be physically present in workspace. It might be even positive for company, as it reduces costs.

I have heard about Digital Nomads thanks to a marketing specialist Natalia Hatalska, she has published a study about this type of living made by the institute she established. I think this is the future of our generation and the next one as well. All of the jobs which can be done online - will be done online, and so it influences on our flexibility regarding the place we work at. It already is possible to work on ''home office'' mode, however I have experienced that employers are not too happy with it and they agree to such type when they have established a policy like this, but if they haven't, it is up to them, which means that sometimes they are okay with it and sometimes they do not appreciate it. I think that soon it will be a standard behavior and way of living, to choose to work online and remotely, so you can travel in the meantime or sit at home, because we are the ones who create the market and the standards of work. Regarding the digital nomads, I would not like to travel my whole life without finding my favourite place to stay there and settle down, but I appreciate the idea of constant moving at some point - it shows how free, open minded and independent these people are.

I have heard of such a way of life but I don't know that people who do it are called digital nomads. I don't want to travel alone but this idea with "hacker paradise" where you could work with other people is amazing! I have friend who is graphic designer like me and he work one year as freelancer from Thailand. In my opion it's great option for creative profession, beacause it's hard to make new and innovative things when you are sitting all day in the office. Of course that daily work in corporations is a safer option than some freelance work but I think if we have internet we should let our allow our employees to travel if their profession isn't related to direct customer meetings. I would like to try to be a digital nomad, maybe when I finish my studies.

I haven't heard about digital nomads before, but after this article I can see a lots of advantages, for example:
- having exciting hobbies:
Whether it’s skiing, surfing, kayaking, or rock climbing – you can set yourself up in the perfect spot so that you can enjoy amazing activities when the working day is done. Or before it begins, or half-way through!
- WORKING REMOTELY FOR CLIENTS IN COUNTRIES THAT PAY WELL:
ay, this one is pretty obvious, but bears mentioning nonetheless. In the past, work and travel often meant teaching, bar work, or picking fruit. Online jobs like programming, SEO consultancy, and even copywriting can offer enough funds to have a comfortable lifestyle on the road, without working long or antisocial hours (unless you choose to of course). Working remotely can also mean earning a better salary than you would get working for local companies or clients.
- You are the boss!!!!
On-line business making is all about networking. It means that you never have to put up with actual bosses; rather, you have to put up (and mutually profit from) business collaborators. As you build on your professional assets, you’ll get access to increasingly valuable opportunities.
Yeah I heard about the General concept , a couple of times to read the article unfortunately it looked like people had refused to work in the office , went to another country to work remotely after 5-6 years still came back.

Yes friends, my neighbor worked in this way in Bali.

I think this approach is too individual for whom some pros can be cons, but definitely to meet new people from different parts of the world is the perfect way.

This is a very difficult question for me because I wasn't to work in this way , to be honest 5 years ago I probably would have said no , because I really liked working in the office, but eventually I had to adjust to remote work at home in the same firm (since man cannot be simultaneously in 2 places if they are separated by 1,500 miles) because I dumya to answer this question you need to fully try it.

I don't think , I think definitely a certain percentage of such people , firstly this method is not relevant in some professions , but even if you take IT in some projects easier to solve problems face to face , because it will save a lot of time.

I don’t know anyone who lives that way, and to be honest I probably wouldn’t want to live like this.
I think that the possibility to travel and work from any place in the world is amazing, but I think that it would be hard for me to focus on work.
I think that in the future more and more people will live that way, because of the freedom it offers.

Yes, I've heard about digital nomads before, I actually have a digital nomad friend or so you may call him. Lots of travelling and not sitting stuck in traffic every morning for at least an hour (times two, as in way to and back) but waking up and go into open beach to write some code? Sounds very tempting.
Living wherever you want and always having a work/way to make a living sounds great and all but to certain point... cause where is 'home'? A place you can always come back to? I think everyone needs such a place. A safe harbor you can always count on.
On a side note, this 'documentary video' must be sponsored by Apple, can't believe all those people work on macs only. Not a single one win/linux machine! And calling themselves Hackers paradise! Outrageous! :P

I never heard of it. I don't know anyone who lives in this way, at least I don't know anything about it. I think it's a good idea to work remotely from anywhere on earth. I like to work remotely and travel.

I know one guy who lives like this. Mostly life goal for "normal" people is to have nice flat, car, family etc.
I talked to him and he absolutely don't care about having "home", thing that he enjoy the most about being 'nomad' is travelling and total freedom.

I've never heard about digital nomads before, but I think it's an interesting way of living. For the last year I'm growing a dream of that kind of lifestyle, I just didn't know it has it's own name :) I know people who are traveling and working for a couple of months and after that coming back home to take some brake and start all over again. I'm dreaming to visit as much places on Earth as possible and I love my job, so I really want to try this lifestyle!
To be honest, I heard about the people living this way, but I didn't know they are called "digital nomads". I think is is really interesting. I'm not sure If I would like to travel and work remotely without being attached to a single place, because I think it would be extremely hard for me to keep focused and work systematically. However, I've been thinkig about moving for a few months to some distant, exotic country (for example Thailand) and work from there remotely. It is very tempting to try that, especially if your profession gives you such freedom.

I have heard about such people but I didn't know they are called "digital nomads". I think it is extremely interesting way to live. If you're single. I can't imagine travelling like this with a whole family. I think for some time I would like to try it, but having a boyfriend - future dentist, might make it a bit difficult.
If costs of buing a flat will be rising like they do, I think more people will decide to do so :P But honestly I think it depends on a person. I believe still more people choose stability and working on a contract.

I have heard and I know this kind of people. They travel a lot, changing countries and "homes" all the time. Some of them just found a new constant place to live and stay there because of the climate or for any other reason.
I must confess, that once I've dreamed about such a life, but now I would rather find my place on Earth and travel a few times a year.
I think this way of living will become more and more popular. For example, my friends, who can work remotely don't even want to buy flats, make families. I guess it's a new trend - free life, free of affections.
I haven't heard about digital nomads before and I don't know anyone who lives that kind of life. Such a lifestyle is kind of beauties of world we are living in, because of technological advancement we can work anywhere we want almost the way we like. Work isn't about to go to workplace sit there for 8 or more hours. I would like to live my life in that way to change my workplace almost every day to go discover new places and earn money to do it at the same time. I don't think that this kind of life is a future because many people are bonded to the place they live and don't want to change that, it's more of a character trait than just new way of work for everyone.

Well i have never heard about digital nomads and i dont know any people who live like that. For me its good part of life but only part because i want to develop my skill in company and creating new thing. I prefer to live in city and go on travel only in some part of year. Maybe after some time i will work remotly but now i have to learn a lot of things to work remotly. Its good option to move to smaller city and work from home with family. Maybe in future more people decide to live like that but i dont think so. Maybe if they are older and they are boring they current job.
I like to have my own place and stay in it - maybe because I had to travel a lot in a previous company I worked in. It is fun for a while but for longer period of time it got really depressing - all of your friends and people you love cannot move all the time with you. But it's good for singles. I personally did not have the concentration to work in a public places, especially managing big applications, databases. Lately I have found a solution for me - headphones with noise cancellations and classical music does the job - you can get lot more concentrated in a noisy area.
Digital nomads? Never heard of it before, I also don't know anybody who runs that way of living. But this idea sounds really nice, work doesn't have to be nine to five at the certain workplace. I would like to try this kind of life for some time, see how would I like it. It could be nice probably to work from Hawaii or Taiwan...

I've heard about digital nomads, but I don't know anyone who lives on this way. For me working and travelling at same time sounds great, but also requires from people bravery and independence. Not everyone are predestined to live so far from their country where are their family and friends. I admire digital nomads and hope that more and more people will live on this way, out of "static life in offices". After all, we have only one life.

Thank you for very interesting article. I've never heard about Digital Nomad term but it seems really nice :D. In my opinion lifestyle like this gives big opportuinty to find beautiful places. If somebody has possibility to do that - why not? I think I would try to live like Digital Nomad.

I've heard about digital nomads earlier but I don't know any. In my point of view this kind of lifestyle might be really interesting and joyful. I'm keen on travels so working while travelling might be a perfect combination for me. I would like to try it in the future after I graduate.

Nowadays everything you need to work is your computer and there are more and more jobs that you can do remotely, this facts might be a booster for people living a digital nomad lifestyle.

You can earn $20 for each 20 minute survey!

Guess what? This is exactly what major companies are paying me for. They need to know what their customer needs and wants. So large companies pay millions of dollars per month to the average person. In return, the average person, like me and you, answers some questions and gives them their opinion.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
