Many of you probably  know this car. This is Volkswagen T2 commonly called Kombi or in Polish "Ogórek". It was very popular in the 70s thanks to the hippies. And also because it was often shown in pop-culture and films. Not without a reason it gained so much popularity. Mostly for design, functionality and innovation. It was produced from the 60s to late 90s as the first car that could accommodate more than 5 people with the possibility of sleeping. Originally it was designed for factory workers, not for public use but that has changed over time.

Kombi is still in use today by many people. There are enthusiasts who love this car and appreciate its advantages. The interior is very simple, you can move individual parts as you wish, just like Lego bricks. Everyone can choose his own style and adapt to personal needs. I think this is an example of good design which is going thru generations. Nowadays there are no cars which are timeless and have characteristic look. Unfortunately Kombi is no longer produced.

I was interested in James Barkman's story about his journey in Kombi. He is a photographer living on the road. Like he said this kind of lifestyle is very inspirational and creative. He spent a lot of time in his car travelling, working and meeting new people. For me it seems an unforgettable experience. Especially if you work as a freelancer then you are not attached to a single place.

I don't know if I would like to spend vacations in such a car. I like to rest in one warm place by the sea. But actually it could be a great adventure.
This way of travelling may be awesome solution for people who don't want to spend a lot of time in one place. I'm not sure if it also would be a good way of living, but maybe someone would love it.
I like this design, it's some kind of retro one. But for long time travelling I wouldn't choose this one. It doesn't look stable for me.
I have never experiences such a travel and I think I won't.

Of course I would like to spend this type of holiday. A couple times I drove around Europe and I slept in tent. During these trips I thought a lot about camper van or "ogórek". If you haven't had this type of holiday I recommend it very much. It's great experience and much cheaper than normal holidays.
Holidays are great idea but I couldn't live like this man.
Of course I love "Ogórek" and I thing that I will buy it in future. I think that I will soon rent a similar car to spend holidays in it.

I'm certainly not a kind of person who would like to travel during whole holidays in a van or other similar car. I'm addicted to comfortable bed, safety, moreover amenities. However, I could agree that it's quite a nice design of vehicle.
One of my colleagues traveled during whole last summer through South America by similar car, what's more, she and her friends had a full sponsorship. Definately wonderful experience, though not for me.

I know that such cars may look amazing and it have to be a great opportunity to travel with lower costs (only for transportation, you don't have to pay for room), but I think that in Poland or Europe it may be a problem. It takes more space at parking than regular car, I'm not super if you just can park in for example somewhere in Bieszczady.
Such cars are the most popular in USA, because I believe that they have got better conditions - better and bigger roads (their cars are wider than europeanon ones)

That's awesome, I dream about buying a road house - if you camp a lot you can notice a lot of campers traveling in a van with a kitchen, bedroom etc. and it's much more convenient - you can go anywhere. I like the design of the Kombi and I would like to go on a trip this way, but I wouldn't like to live this way - I'm a freelancer already and I can tell that continuous traveling is not that fun, eventually you get tired and your work productivity drops. Of course photographers need an inspiration, but developers need concentration and constant distracting, changing environment sounds like a bad idea.
This car looks like very adaptive - you can create whatever you want inside of it. I think that living in this car could be very interesting. You've got everything you need inside and you are really independent. You are not attached to one place and your home is exactly where you are. You are free. I will go for a road trip around the Europe in that kind of car this summer. I think that it will be huge adventure, I can't wait for it!
Unknown said…
I would like to spend a vacation like that, because I am person who likes travelling by car. It would be something new for me and definitely great adventure. It also gives you big independence because everything you need you have in car and thanks to that the costs of vacation are much lower.

I am not very fond of "Ogórek" but I can relate to Barkman: if I would have enough money for maintenance costs I would definitely be driving Ford Mustang (1969 or 2017). I would love to take looooooong trip around Europe with it. There is something tempting in this idea, I can't precisely say what. I have never taken such trip, but I hope that one day i will have time and money to do so.

My friend has this car and he travel with it. I think volkswagen company should consider resuming production and releasing a new version. It will be great if look of this car would have been left but the whole mechanics was replaced eg the engine. I would like to go on a trip with this car, maybe one day I will have that possibility :) I think it's great because you don't have to waste money on accommodation.

I think it would be a positive experience to spend some time in such an old and hippie car while traveling somewhere in Europe, I also have watched a series on Youtube, where a group of friends go across many countries on different continents and spend their whole time on sightseeing places and living in this car. I believe that if someone finds it fulfilling they should keep on doing it and pursue such path of their lives, regardless of what is is basically. In this case, if you like to travel and you enjoy such type of living, when you do not know where you are going to end up at the end of the day, you should continue. I think the design of this car is nice and original, when I was a kid, me and my family used to drive in a van called Mercury Villager which has 7 seat available to passengers and a couch, which was like a big house or fortress to us, kids - therefore we truly enjoyed all of the European road trips at the time, there was always enough space to play, sleep and rest.

I'm certainly not a kind of person who would like to travel during whole holidays by RV. The accommodations available in most rental motor homes are comfortable, yet simple. And it's a relatively small space, so it helps if you are very comfortable living in close quarters with your travel partners. What is more driving and parking an RV in unfamiliar cities and parks is impractical, expensive, and inconvenient. You’ll probably need to tow a tiny car for day-to-day driving.

Yeah I would like to spend vacations in car. But not in old Volkswagen but in a new big camper :) I would like to go for one month ride to see all Europe. I've never experienced a trip in a similar car but my friend had and he recommend this. I think that is a new way of traveling in Poland and it may be very interesting. I like design of Kombi, but only for traveling. I will rent this car, but I won't buy, because I live in Warsaw and I will choose urban car.

Yes, I think camper is the best solution if you travel a lot around Europe. The cost of living in this kind of trip is lower than normal holiday. There is also a comfort that you can go wherever you want to.
Adam Paśniczek said…
Thanks for your opinion. I think it depends on what everyone likes. I realize that living in that car could be difficult and uncomfortable.
Adam Paśniczek said…

Thank you for sharing your opinion. I heard also some stories about people who get sponsored for their trip. It’s true that is wonderful experience.
Adam Paśniczek said…
Yes, maybe it’s a problem to go on trip in Europe ( because of old infrastructure in towns ) but there is a many places to go outside big cities. I think this kind of travelling in Europe is not popular like in US because they have a “travel culture” e.g famous route 66. This country is so huge that if want see all states you have to go on the trip. Maybe that’s why in the USA this car get so much popularity.
Adam Paśniczek said…
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that this car is very adaptive. I hope that your trip will succeed :)
Adam Paśniczek said…
Yes, that’s true it is more comfortable to travel in a camper. I can guess that for your work it is hard to concentrate during such trip. I have the same as a graphic designer. There is no problem for me to travel for a long period of time but not for all the time.

Oh, I definitely would like to have such an experience. I love traveling and I love different ways of traveling. I've never tried to spend even a couple days in this or similar car, so I want to do it some day. I'm sure, he can catch amazing views and meet great people, and discover tons and tons of new places. It's an unforgettable experience. Hope, one day I could spend some of me holidays like this.

I haven't spent any trip in such a van but I'd like to. To be honest, I love to go on holiday by car. I just feel the trip, climate and so on. It has its charm.
I'm convinced that in the next few years I'll do such trip.

My uncle bought old toyota land cruiser 80 and did hmm.. let's say such van. He threw back seats and did a bed. On the roof, he put a container with water. I know it's not a van, but the purpose is similar. He did it to be able to go to off-roads expedition. I think it's also very interesting way of using a car.

I think that spending vacations in this car may be actually a really great experience.
The possibility to move around your “house” sounds really amazing.
I think that it’s the great way to travel, but I can’t really imagine living in a car.
Sure for a couple of weeks it might be great, but for longer period of time I think that I’d hate it/
I really like the design of Kombi, but unfortunately I haven’t experienced a trip in it or in any similar car.

I would like to spend 3-4 days in the van but not the entire vacation :D I think it would be a cool adventure. I'm Fascinated with cars and everything that is related to cars just like it :) I really like this project. I had no chance to experience adventures in such a van but if I had a chance, I would definitely use it

Yes please. Gimme a remote work to do, internet connection, undestructuble "ogórek" and boy oh boy, a journey around the world here I come! (Digital nomad anyone?)
Sounds nice. On the other hand warm bed and a cozy apartment sounds good as well.
There are actually people living (not only vacationing) traveling around the world, rejected most of their possesions, just walking on sunshine and in the direction of it. Check out /r/vagabond on reddit or whether you are interested or not just see a movie called "Into the wild" (inspired by true story), highly recommended.

I think that could be a really great adventure to spend few months living like this guy but I don't know if I can afford being all the time in move.
Design of this car is absolutely timeless, and actually you can buy "new" T2 : ) link below:

I'm a petrolhead, however I don't really like idea to spend vacation in a car. I think, if someone is ok with that, it might be a really good and I think not so expensive way to travel. I would like to have a short (3-4 day) trip in such car, maybe after it I would fall in love in travelling in such way?

I would love to spend holidays in such van. I have always been into travelling (even though I don't travel much due to lack of money and or maybe due to being underaged for most of my life so far, I guess). "One day when I'm adult" (I still consider myself a teenager :P ) I want to travel as much as I can. That's why to finally start travelling on my own together with my boyfriend we are plannign to go for a week-long car trip through Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Czech Republic and back to Poland. Not much, just few places in each country but I consider it a great start for me!
I think this lifestyle is not for everyone. Some people value stability and routine (routine =/= boredom). His life is not about going on a adventure, his life is an adventure. Not everyone would be able to live like this. It sounds amazing, I would love to try but I'm not sure I would be able to live such a life for long.
1. Would you like to spend vacations in this car or maybe in another one ?
Did that already while traveling through Italy. It is a good way until everything is working fine. Car trouble are really annoying and spoils a lot of fun. Especially when you are waiting for a specific car part to order or the Air Conditioning stops to work and there is 35 degree outside.
2. What do you think about such way of travel or living?
It is ok if you don't have a lot of money to spend. It is really the cheapest option. In few towns in Italy you currently cannot stop anywhere and go to sleep at night. You might get a ticket for that. Nowadays I prefer a good hotel and good breakfast in the morning in it.
3. Do you like the design of Kombi?
It looks ok.
4. Have you ever experienced a trip in a similar car?
As mentioned in point 1 :)

I would rather prefer to drive by bicycle and leave in a hotel then in a car. It's not so comfortable as hotel and it takes time to travel from one city to another. Or I just don't understand the sense because I didn't had enough practice in driving car :)
I would definitely spend vacations in car like that. It would a great adventure and opportunity to discover many places around Europe, because it is cheapest and most encouraging way to travel abroad. The biggest flaw is i have to find a driver, because I don't have a driver license. I think that if someone wants to live in car like that it's his business. If you want you can and should do it, because life is to short to think about what others think.
From a design point I really like the look of kombi, especially ones with neon colors they are just so different from other normal cars on streets an that is beautiful.

Travel like that is very interesting but to some time because we have to focus about our future. Of course when you sit on chair 20 years later you have nice memeory and you can tell your child about that story. Its nice to visit other country and see something different for me of course but its very expensive travel. This man solved that problem because he build his own car-house. I have never travel like that i buy a travel in shop. Well now i dont have enough time to build car like that.

my dream car:) I would definitely try such a trip if I could have this van. This car was created to give happiness and joy of traveling - sweet little guy with a true free spirit. I feel sad, that VW does't produce it anymore.
I hope one day I could be enough adventurous to buy similar car and travel around the Europe, stay in small villages, meet locals and write down the stories in my travel book. Now I have to travel in my small car, but I still love it though.
James Barkman is my hero)
I was already planning spending one whole summer like this. I never tried before, but I guess that it could be really funny. Taking a big van, couple of good friends, and the road is ours! It would be great. Adventure all the time!

Beautiful and unique car, but hard in use, in my opinion. The production of this bus started in the 80's, what is quite long time period. I suspect that now some of its mechanical parts aren't working correctly. Additionally this model isn't suitable for driving in the mountains because of low engine's power. Despite its weakness in technical aspect, I must admit that its design is great and makes this model distinctive. I didn't get a chance to try this car out, but I would be glad to do it.

I knew someone who had a huge, old combi Mazda and liked it a lot. Personally I'm not a fan of spending vacation in a car, it's a fine way of transport - sure, but I prefer a comfy bed to sleep in. There is this sort of romantic feeling to traveling in a hippie van from place to place, but as much as I love how the cucumber Volkswagen looks, I doubt it's that comfortable... not to mention servicing and fueling it might be more expensive than several airline tickets.

I've already been on trip like this few years ago. We were travelling for about one week with friends. Personally I love events like this and I hope I'll try it again.
I don't like long trips by car becouse I don't feel comfortable there at all. For long travels I prefer plane or train. So, I wouldn't like to spend vacations in this way. On the other hand I think it's cool that people have passions like this one and give a second life to old things like this car.

I am a fan of sport cars, thats why I don't like this design. ;)

I wouldn't want to travel or live that way. Constantly moving with no place to go back to. It's... sad. It's just not for me. Although the design of that car is quite nice.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
