Week 7 [08.05-14.05.2017] – The father of modern world

Nicola Tesla, the man called by many the father of modern world. Born in modern-day Croatia in 1856. His father, Milutin was a priest  of  the Serbian Orthodox Church. His mother, Duka had the ability to memorize long text and a talent for hand crafting. Tesla inherited the eidetic memory from his mother, and from young age he amazed everyone with his talents.

During the studies, there was an ongoing debate between him and one of the professors over perceived design flaws in the direct-current motors that were demonstrated in class. Tesla dropped his studies and moved to Paris, where he took a job at the Continental Edison Company. During his job, there he made a prototype of alternating a current motor. He tried to find a businessman to become an investor in his invention, but none of them understand the device and didn’t see the value of it, so they rejected Tesla. Nicola decided to move to New York, where he could meet Thomas Edison, who could eventually appreciate his work. His idea was dismissed, but he get a job at Edison’s company. After some time, Nicola became his most valuable engineer, and got a promise of 50 000$ for improving Edison’s direct-current generators, what Tesla did, but in return, Edison said he was only joking about the reward, and offered only a rise of 10$ a week. Tesla resigned and was forced to take a job of digging ditches to survive. After hearing that, several investors asked Tesla to create an arc lighting system. In return they would finance his new company, the Tesla Electric Company. Nicola accepted the offer. When the company started to make profit, he was swindled out of most of the money, and then ejected from the company.
Two men approached Tesla and agreed to invest in his alternating current project, building him a laboratory in New York. Here he built a complete system of generators, motors and lighting. Then he was asked to lecture at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Now he could finally develop and do research that led to the modern world we know. First he researched radiant energy, it led to the discovery of X-rays and its usage. He didn’t make his discoveries well-known, which eventually led to X-rays been attributed to somebody else later.

There were more Tesla’s inventions not credited to him, e.g. the radio transmission.
Besides the inventions that were not credited to Tesla, there were some others, which could not find financial support. One of them were waves to detect German U-bots and other ships. Twenty years passed when eventually radar was invented using Tesla’s principles.
The last patent that Tesla received was for Equipment for aerial transportation. He designed a flying machine that was a cross between a helicopter and an airplane that could take off vertically and then fly horizontally. Now known as Vertical Short Take-off and Landing planes.

Surely Nicola Tesla genius and ability to think big caused that many others could not comprehend some of the plans he had for the future. It is one of the examples when a great mind is born to early, in times where he is not understood, and could not use full of his potential.

What do you think about Nicola Tesla? Have you heard about his inventions, that are credited to someone else?
Do you know other great minds, that were born to early, and could not use full of their potential?

Nicola Tesla was a really well know person. Especially when it comes to genious inventions.
In my opinion Leonardo da Vinci also was a great person. He invented a great amount of things that we are using today. He was very well educated. Da Vinci was a real Renaissance man knowing much about everything.

For sure Tesla was genius and great mind. In fast I didn't know his story. I didn't know about most of these inventions. I thought that somebody else invented most of these things. In history it often happens that somebody else gets price not inventor. The most interesting invention in the text is plane which starts vertically. It's nice that company which produced electric car is called Tesla. I don't know history of this company but I think that its name is tribute to Tesla

I wasn't aware that so many of his inventions were contributed to sb's else. However, that's usually the case with geniuses - they focus on progress and great ideas, not on money or making a name for themselves. That's why business people and economists always make money on geniuses. They just know how to sell them and their projects.

I knew that Tesla was a great mind, but I didn't know that so many of his inventions are assigned to someone else!
I think that great mind, that was misunderstood and due to it hated by society was ... Bona. She was great economist, she expanded her wealth and she knew how to administer. But polish society was jealous and they wanted to ruin her. They hated her for her knowledge of law and economy, so they couldn't deceive her and she was richer and richer. She wanted to advise king, so situation in the kingdom would be better, but his official advisers told him not to do this, because "she is just traitor, she wants all of us to get poorer and poorer", while she was just enforcing the law and she didn't allow to break the law and bribery.
When I was doing research about Tesla genius, and his inventions, Leonardo da Vinci crossed my mind. I agree with your opinion about him. During their times they were almost like magicians with their ideas.
Yes, that's sad that so many inventions are not credited to their inventors. I'm happy to hear I have realized you about some of Tesla's inventions. There are many more of them that are used to these days, like the remote control.
I'm happy to hear that my article showed you some of Tesla's inventions. That's true, what you say about geniuses and money. But there is also another problem, that Tesla had encountered in Europe. Happens that, investor don't understand how the invention works, and rejects to sponsor the genius idea.

There's no doubt that Tesla was a genius and an extraordinary person, his inventions and experiments with electricity were life changing. I remembered another example of a genius who was born too early - it's Konstantin Tsiolkovsky - the Soviet rocket scientist of Polish descent, born in 1857, developed the astronautic theory that later inspired the whole rocket science. Obviously his ideas couldn't be implemented properly during his life because he worked in the beginning of 20th century.
I think that Tesla is the most underestimated genius of our world. It is sad that so many people know about him so little. If people from his epoch could appreciate him, I think that today's world would look very different, thanks to his inventions. It would just be better.

Tesla was a brilliant inventor, who had an amazing ability to envision the future. He overtook the world for many years. His inventions were breakthrough and thanks to him we live in a world like this, but I haven't known that so many ideas were credited to someone else.

I agree that he was so brilliant he became an icon in the science world, since many of his visions and ideas were simply genius and found its application later in years, which also shows how underestimated and not appreciated he was at the time.

What can I think about a man who wanted to give the world absolutely free electricity, and get rid of the wires? Genius, dreamer, idealist in one bottle. If not security services and other people from the behind the scene who inserted a spoke in his wheels in order to their wallets are not become emptied, we would use free and wireless electricity. Unfortunately, Thomas Edison was not only a scientist but also greedy for money businessman, and now we have what we have.

Yes I heard about Nicola Tesla. When I was in Belgarde I was in Nicola Tesla Museum but it's sad that is a really small place which is not very popular. I think such a great explorer deserves more attention. In Centrum Nauki Kopernik sometimes they organize Tesla Day and they remind us how much he discovered. In my opinion his inventions were a crucial for our time.

Tesla surely was genius. Regretfully, he was not good businesmann and let others take care of his money. It is really sad that because of pople greed his great mind could not flourish.
That's great that my post realized you about some of Tesla's inventions, there are of course more of them. I never heard the story about Bona, I will have to catch up with that, especially that it is part of Polish history.
I agree, that's a big loss for mankind, that there were so many great minds, that couldn't use full of their potential.
That's true. It's sad how most of people react to things they don't understand.

Yes I heard about Nicola Tesla. For me Tesla is the most underestimated scientist ever. One of the most important thing that only a few people know that Nicola argued with Einstein about relativity theory. Nicola had very good arguments. But Tesla was perceived as mental...
I think nowadays many businessmans are looking for a genius and they do all PR's work and I hope people are not going to lose any genius like Tesla.
Yes, I agree. Good to know, that my article realized you in some of Tesla's inventions, that were credited to someone else.
Never heard of Tesla Days orginized by Centrum Nauki Kopernik. I definetly have to go there. Thanks for sharing :)
I think that Nicola Tesla was the greatest scientist and inventor who was ahead of his time , many of his inventions, we started to use just now (like an induction motor). He made a huge contribution to the study of electricity. There is also a legend that in 1930, Niсola Tesla created a weapon that can hit targets at a distance with directional radiation , but destroyed the records of the present invention.

I don't know a lot about scientists, but of course, I've heard about Tesla and his huge impact in the world's science. I would like to visit Tesla museum to see his inventions in real life (of course, we still use what he created in our everyday life).

Well, I heard about Nicola Tesla as well as about his inventions. To be honest, I haven't connected some of them with Tesla. I just heard about it.
I'm a big fan of everything that is wireless. I try to make a lot of things to be wireless. Starting from the light, through turning on the sockets, to controlling my coffee machine. I just think it's useful and improves my daily life. So what can I say? Thank you Nicola!

Yes, I have heard about Tesla before. A briliant inventor and a really sad story of him having such a great potential and being used by others for their own profit. I've heard Tesla wanted everyone to have unrestricted access to energy. There is a lot of mystery surrounding his inventions. I agree he was born too early, sadly. I think we could have benefited from his genius a lot more today.
I think that Nicola Tesla was one of the greatest minds in history.
I have heard a lot about his inventions and what a D Thomas Edison really was.
I think that more people should know about this genius, because there are a lot of people who are not aware of who he was.
There were a lot of people who were bora too early for their times, but I think that it’s impossible to find better example than Tesla.

I really admire Tesla, his big mind and what he achieved. As many says, he was born in wrong century. Imagine what would he invent now.. I've heard about his inventions, that somebody else took credit.
I think Leonardo Da Vinci was also a person, who was born to early. However, how our world would look like without them?

I alread knew Edison stole some of Tesla's inventions but I didn't know Tesla was working for him. For me it's sad how a genious could not do what he loved due to lack of money. And it was again said to read how Edison treated Tesla. I think the greatest example of a great mind born too early is Leonardo da Vinci, who designed many devices we are using nowadays.
Tesla inventions really revolutionize our way of living. I did not know that he was working for Thomas Edison, for me the saddest part of the story was the promise made for 50 000 $. For me made promise has to be kept - the only things about him that comes to my head are censored words. Very sad story.
Tesla was a great scientist, he invented so many things that our world is based on, so without people like him we wouldn't be in place we are right now. With tesla like many other inventors many of their ideas where "stolen" by someone else it's not the dictionary meaning of steal they just think about something as obvious or just not likely to being used, so they just don't talk about it and in future someone else figure it out and told about it to everyone. I think that great minds are almost always born to early if you are good at innovating you can't use your full potential because it always will be something that will stop you in your process.

Of course Tesla is one of the best scientists and create a lot of useful things. But we shouldnt forget about other peoples who create other useful things. Anyway Tesla is genius and i really admire people like that. I still waiting for new invention and useful things from his company and our world still be better if we had company and invention like that.

I've heard about Tesla before, but I had no clue about his inventions. I agree with previous opinion about the story when Tesla worked for Edison. It seems that even he was an innovative engineering genius, he was also a naive person. Tesla appeared as one of characters in one of my favourite films - "Illusionist". Tesla associates to me not only with this inventor, but also to a famous company which build electric cars - Tesla Motors.

Mean silly people always try to critisize whatever is too hard for their simple mind. Maybe that is why the great inventors of all times faced the problem of misunderstanding and underestimation. Nicola Tesla is a good, but sad example. They world is cruel and unfair. Of course, now people could admire and discuss how great Tesla was, but it is always felt so sorry that such people couldn't be estimated while being alive to create their incredible things. That's why I am glad, that now more and more smart guys get a chance to tell the world about their inventions and start-ups.
I admire Tesla, just like any other great inventor. They all made an efford, so now we have the world as we know it. Probably without their great minds we would still live in much worse conditions or without many solutions that we know now. Was that too early for him to be born ? Maybe. But maybe it was just the right time ?

I heard about Nicola Tesla, and I heard about some of his inventions being stolen (to be fair, mostly because of the G.F.Darwin short https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ky32f0n3Tg ).
I guess there were a lot of people, through the history who had ideas that were too much for people of their times, the most overused example of that would be Leonardo Da Vinci and some of his inventions, I guess it's just something humanity does, when something shakes up the way things are, people get upset or can't understand it right away, Elon Musk might end up being a modern example of this but now inventions are rarely attributed to single person.

Thanks for this article. I think everybody have heard about Nicola Tesla but I haven't heard about his inventions in this way. He was the man who was pushing up our world.
I've heard about Tesla's story earlier, but thank you for this article.

I don't know any similar story but I know that many talents are wasted mostly becouse of parents that are unable to spot them on time.

Nikola tesla huh? I have heard of him. Great man. Great scientist. (Suposedly created a working Deathray) Yet very underestimated. I have heard abouth his... dispute with Thomas Eddison, yet that's all i know about him. One man who comes to mind in comparison to him is probably Leonardo Da Vinci, as both of these guys were born too early to achieve glory.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
