Week 7 [08.05-14.05.2017] – From small to big

There is a Japanese legend called “Straw Millionaire” about a poor man who becomes rich, thanks to series of successive trades, starting with a straw.

Nowadays the story has repeated. Kyle MacDonald, called the paperclip guy, One day, sitting at his desk he looked at a red paperclip and come up with an idea to play Bigger and Better starting with that. Rules of the game are to trade something small for something bigger and better and repeat it

He started the game offering a red paperclip from his desk and soon two girls offered a fish-shaped pen for it. Later he got a hand-sculpted doorknob for the pen. After that he traded the doorknob for a camp stove, and after almost a year of trading he ended up giving a movie role contract for a farmhouse.

I encourage you to watch the TED:

Questions:

1. Have you heard about the paperclip guys story before? Do you think, that this kind of story could happen in Poland where we are recognized as more distrustful and cunning?

2. Have you ever played the game called Bigger and Better? If yes, what are your biggest achievement?

3. Are you an opportunity hunter or a successive trader?

I haven't heard the story before so thank you for sharing it. Actually, it's so fantastic I can't believe it. I've also haven't played Bigger and Better game, however, I'm going to try it!
I believe I'm not only excelent trader but also avid opportunity hunter. When I was a child I picked "noski" from oak tree and tried to sold them. Strangers, always adults of course, payed me some small change or gave me some small presents. ;)

I haven't heard this story before, but I think it would be nice to listen about during some classes about entrepreneurship.
I have never heard of this game, so I haven't played it.
I can't tell really. You've interested me and now I have to read more about it!
How about you - are you excelent trader or opportunity hunter?
I'm glad to hear, that you liked the story. You should definitely try to play the game. That's a lovely story, about "noski", thanks for sharing :)
I agree with you, that this story could be instructive for entrepreneurs. I'm happy that I've got your attention with the topic and you will do more research :). I'm rather a fair trader, trying to trade for the same amount the things are worth. Also I'm not a big oportunity hunter, especially not the kind that we can watch on Youtube with the Lidl clients :).

I haven't heard of this game before and haven't played it, but it sounds like a really ineffective way of growth and improvement. I think that "invest everything you have and scale fast" is a better way, because if you start with something small and exchange it with a small margin you will spend a lot of time, especially when you find yourself exchanging huge things, like your shed for a small house - with margins at this scale people will not approve the exchange.

Haha Lidl clients...
Have you heard about American TV programme "Auction Hunters"? They're auctioning old, not paid off garages without checking what's inside. They could only have a quick look at it, yet they mustn't enter garage area. What surprise me the most are things which people collect at their garages and the great ability of "Hunters" to sell acquired goods.
I haven't heard the story before but it is very interesting, maybe it is not the best strategy because it takes a long time, but it is amazing how people can move from something small to something big. I don't think that something like this is possible in Poland, because most of us are too distrustful and don't wanna risk.
I think that I'm opportunity hunter, long distance strategy is not my strong point, I prefer to search for opportunity and use them.

I have never heard that story but it sounds unbelievable that you keep exchanging things to more and more valuable and finally get something really expensive. I think it is all about a good personality and marketing skills. Some years ago there was also a tv series on discovery that some trader's goal was to get a super car starting with a small one which cost no more that 500$.
Yeah I heard about this story , and it is very amazing. I think that in Poland it may take much more time , but it's real , I also think that there are more very big luck , because at certain times a person to need what you want to exchange.

I think those who played the MMORPG game that is definitely played in this game in order to get the best in-game items.

I also have never heard that story before, but thank you for sharing it. I have never played this game and frankly I am not a fan of such games, but as long as it keeps you motivated to improve and achieve greater things - it is good. As someone mentioned before, I prefer to take biger steps and set greater goals after each other, since in my opinion, it'd take way more time to do only small improvements and changes. If I should describe myself, I would definitely choose the second option, as I am a successive trader and when focus on the goal I set to myself, I keep on putting the whole effort and fulfill it.

Actually I have heard a similar story. It was about a guy who managed to change a pen to some extra expensive car like Ferrari or similar one. I don't think that in Poland it would be possible.
I have never heard about game Bigger and Better and I have never played it.

I haven't heard of this game before and haven't played it. I am a strategic kind of person. The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, "What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?" This recurring question helps you see around the next corner. There you can evaluate accurately the potential obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path -- your strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: "What if?" Select. Strike.

Great story! I hear about it for the first time. I think it's good chance to meet many inspirational people. If someone in Poland started it, I would definitely participate. Cool is that such a story can start with such a small thing as a paper clip.

That is really nice story, good for him. It is quite hard to comprehend for me that one could exchange thinks for bigger and better. I think such success is possible only if people who trade with you really need the thing that you posess. In other case exchanging is simply not worth it and will not happen.

I haven't heard of this story. It is great, thank you for sharing it. I think in Poland this is impossible. But this story reminded me funny scene from The Office. Have you seen this series? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWxcCCVJ1aU
Well I really like trading and I think I am a successive trader. When I was 18 I'm selling figures of footballers, which were not available in Poland.
That's true, that it is not a very effective way of growth, because it's slow. But also it is not as risky as the method you mentioned: "invest everything you have and scale fast". I'm not a type of a risk taker, so I prefer the slow method.
That's true, I agree that this method is slow, but also it is not that risky. And I agree that in Poland this story wouldn't happen, but only because we are distrustful.
That tv show sounds interesting. Do you remember the name of the series? How much time did the trader got to reach the goal?
I think, that in Poland this story would have a very small change to happen. In my opinion most of poles are untrustful and would not want to trade. But maybe i shouldn't measure other people by one's own yard-stick in this case :)

I've heard this story before, but never watched a TED talk about it. It was interesting, thank you :) When I first heard about it, I thought that in only can happen in USA when people are maybe a bit more open for fun. I think, it could happen in Poland, but you have to have a lot of fortune for the start. There aren't many people who will exchange anything for paperclip, but if you can make a couple of deals at the start, it could lead to bigger and bigger exchanges.
I've never played Bigger and Better game because I'm not a trader at all :) It's always difficult for me to sell something to someone and to negotiate.

Interesting story. Haven't head about it before but it sounds reasonable. Starting from a small thing someone needs and trading it off for something of bigger/higher value is possible. I don't think it's possible in Poland where trading with so called 'Janusze biznesu' will leave you off rather cheated.
Never played Bigger and Better before but I may try someday. Sounds awesome.

Wow that’s a really great story. I haven’t heard it ever before but I find it very interesting.
I think that with the right persuasive skills the story could happen anywhere.
I haven’t played the game called Bigger and Better, because I haven’t heard about it before, but now I have to try playing it.
I don’t really know if I’m opportunity hunter or a successive trader, I guess a little of both depending on situation.

I never heard about this story but it's quite motivating and inspirational.
In my opinion there is no chance to do something like that in Poland - too many cheaters.

I was shocked by the story! Who would even want to trade a pen for a paperclip, I think it's an "America thing". I can't believe he succeeded, it's really amazing. But thinking about it I think in Poland something like this could happen as all the time people are buying things not worth the money, because someone "can into marketing".
I've never played this game as I have never heard of it. To play it first I would have to believe I can do it and improve my soft skills (as for convincing people to give me "pen for paperclip" might require great soft skills and believing I can do it. If I can't convince myself I won't convince anyone else).

I haven't heard about this story. It is very interesting and almost unbelievable. Could this game be played in Poland? Why not! However, I think because of our characteristic as a nation it would be harder to achieve such big success.
It's hard for me to tell whether I’m opportunity hunter or a successive trader.
I guess it depends on a situation.

And... Those garages are not empty?.. I thought that it is obvious to take all valuable things with you when you are leaving.

I have heard about similar story, but I thought that was a legend or something. Very interesting, that this guy really exists. But I think it is a single case, a very rare case. I wouldn't even try to play such a game, cause I am not good at trading. For me, being a great trader is a talent, you can't study. I don't know about Poland, I still haven't learnt much about mentality here, but in my country everything is possible, I guess:)
I haven't heard about the paperclip guy and I have to say that is really incredible to earn from something really worthless as a paperclip to really expensive things like the farmhouse. I think this kind of situation is hard to repeat, because it's based on trading skills on our charisma and many people don't have these traits. In Poland it would be really difficult to do that, because we don't like to loss on trading we have to see a real value.
No, I haven't played this game so I don't have anything to tell about it.
I can say that I am a pretty good trader. To be a good trader you have to offer something that opposite side wants and if you have that or you make them to want that it's pretty easy.

History like that is very interesting and nice to listen about people whos happy and doing something what they want. Of course the most impresive thing is how people like that devise that. Before i have never heard about this story but after red it i think its very interesting and we can learn something from this article. Well every people who develop our earth and people life its good people. I have never played that game. I still want to learn how to negotation with people
I really enjoyed this story but I was surprised, I never heard about it before. Just think about it, simple paperclip, you can have nothing for this, so the idea to trade for such a small thing was...strange. But it actually worked! Amazing. I have never played this game. It could be such an experience...

I haven't heard about the paperchip guys story before. I think that it's a fantastic game for everyone, what a pity that I havent't played it yet...Thanks to this game people can learn to present things at its best and also to develop their communication skills and creativity. If I played this, I could even make new friendships. I must try it out necessarily!

I don't even remember trading anyone for anything and while the story seems fascinating, I doubt it would work out that well for me. I never tried playing Bigger and Better (if you can call it a game). Also, I didn't know we were recognized as cunning, of all things. That's a new one.

I've never heard about this game and this guy but I'm sure he's really open minded. In my opinion, those people like him will get very big fortune because they strange on their way.
I've never heard this story and never played this game. I'm not a trader at all so it's hard for me to tell something about it, but I know for sure that you have to be clever to do it.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
