Week 5 [03.04-09.04.2017] Want to sound like a leader? Start by saying your name right | Laura Sicola |

Have you ever been in a situation when you are a leader in your job, lead developer, project manager etc. and  the idea / message you are trying to pass over gets mixed up? Have you ever thought the reason of that problem can lie in the way you use your voice?
If you want to sound like a leader and be credible, you have to sound credible.

We have a lot of control over how we use our voice – and we just have to adjust it to a proper situation correctly. You can take control over tonality of your voice to make the message you want to pass as clear as possible. It really works. Many successful people do it all the time. Taking control over how you control your voice and how emotions are passed through it are the main keys to a clear message.

Enough introduction - all of that included in TED video from Laura Sicola titled "Start by saying your name right":

Questions:
1) Do you think that people with confident voice tonality are more credible ? Is correct pronunciation really the key for correct delivery of message and achieving goals ?
2) Have you ever made tone execution incorrectly to a situation (like "Everybody, please stay calm" in TED). After watching this presentation would you like to learn more about the power of your voice and how to sound more credible ?

It's fact that people who are confident are more credible. when you have strong voice it's good.
I think about people who cheated with "grandson method" which people talk about. These people must have strong and confident voice if they can steal so much money. It's amazing that so many people let them steal money.

I always knew that way of pronouncing has huge influence on how I will be perceived and how many people will object my ideas. I had few moments when I realized that my ideas are not trusted just because I did not expressed them "confident" enough, but usually I try to explain my point of view, rather than support my statement with confidence, since arguments are much better way to support your point of view than confidence. Confidence surely helps, but i have seen too many confident fools to rely only on way of expression.

I didn't like Laura's non-verbal communication, chaotic hands movement, pace of walking. Neither her tone of voice, for me she desperately wanted to sound authoritative yet I simply didn't buy her. I've expected sth more of her, especially that she talked about how to sound like a leader, but she wasn't the one for me.
I'm working with children so I observed that tone of voice, appriopriate intonation and self-confidence could work wonders - you become credible leader.

In my opinion it's easier to talk about your point of view when you have a right pronounciation. I think that if someone has a speech defect he's less confident just because of it and in fact can't talk to the people. Personally I don't make speeches very often and I don't remember any of this kind of mistakes.
I wouldn't like to learn more about power of voice because I don't think that this kind of knowledge will be useful for me.

I believe that if you want to be credible you have to be sure, or you have to think, that you're right.
I know that sometimes I don't say things right, because tone of my voice or my non-verbal communication is just bad - like when I'm nervous.
Now I know, that when you're nervous you should calm down and then talk, so you'll be well received.

In my opinion it is very important to sound credible. There are some ways to learn how to do this. For example:
1) Speak slower. Take your time to speak with purpose.

2) Speak louder. Tip which helped me tremendously is to speak through people instead of at them.

3) Don’t rush to respond. Give yourself an extra second or two to process what they just said.

4) Use pauses effectively. Think where commas fall as points where you can and should wait an extra second.

5) Speak with passion. If you’re passionate about what you say, your audience will be passionate about it, too.
I know that the way we speak can influence on our appearance and our self-confidence as well. People always want to listen to people who can speak very confidentialy, because it makes the impression that the speaker know very well what is he talking about and that makes we want to follow his ideas.

In my opinion showing confidence is the most simple way to become credible. When you speak in a way that you show you believe in what you say or you know that you are right, people may think you are true and know what you're saying. I also agree that showing passion is important because then you show you are also true to yourself and this makes you look credible and interesting.

I think it's really important that's how you say the message. I saw this for exams when I was quietly saying that the lecturers thought I wasn't sure of my answer. When you speak loud and slow people think that you are more confident. I'm not a good speaker but I think this is a very important skill to learn. First of all, when you are in high position for example when you are a team manager. When you tell your team that everything is going well they have to believe you and often it does matter how you say it. In my opinion this skill is very helpful in life.

I think the way we speak affects on conversation. If we speak clear and fluent we create an image of self confident person. It is important no to lisp, because people won't understand us.

I have never made tone execution incorrectly. I'm not a type of speaker so I don't make public speeches often.
After watching this presentation I would like to learn more about the power of voice, but I don't think it will be a useful knowledge for me

In my opinion being confident about what you are talking about is a key point to become credible. Passion is also very important. People find such people much more trustworthy, so to achieve your goals you have to be confident!
Being a confident is a key to any kind of success - nice, strong voice can only further help, but yes I think it does matter a lot, best example would be our Polish lector Tomasz Knapik who never agrees to read electrion spot or anything considering politics - because he doesn't want his voice to be connected with politics in any way, it proves that voice does matter for many cases.

I think that the voice is important, but this is not the most important thing. Leader can't be quiet. Leader should be assertive. I would like to be the boss in a project. I think I would be good at this haha :)
I think that your pronunciation and tone of voice is important in a speech and can make you sound credible. Let's look for example on the coaching, that is a money making machine, based on confident talking. Sometimes I use my tone incorectly to the situation for comedy purposes. Personally I don't like giving speeches and don't feel the need for this skill in my career right now.
I believe that confident voice is very important. Intonation and pronunciation can completely change the meaning of the sentence. Ability to speak confidently can help to tell about your idea and your emotions.
I really want to be able to speak confidently, because sometimes I feel that I am being listened to, but not heard.
I think that being confident and showing your confidence to others is the key to success.
But I think that the tone of voice is minor factor when showing your confidence.
The pose and behavior are the key to success. Of course when you have shaky voice it ruins everything even when you have a great pose, but in other cases I wouldn’t say it has a lot of influence on how you are perceived.
I think that for most management and pr positions skill of right pronunciation and adjusting voice tonality is crucial. Number of signals we receive from body language and voice is so huge that good use of those will make us to look better in front of others. The simplest way to visualize this is situation when someone is asking you but he's doing it with so steady tone that you are not sure is he asking you. When we are a good speaker it would be easier for us to convince someone to our ideas or just to explain our ideas.
After watching this presentation I really would like to learn more about power of voice and I will look for some knowledge in this topic.
I heard one of those recordings from UWAGA on TVN once. The man really sound credible and what he was saying was well prepared. But there was also one thing that help him - old people memory is getting mixed up, they are easy pray for good psychological gamers.
Good knowledge helps that was always the best leverage. But in politics, marketing etc. as we all know knowledge is not everything - the strong and good expression is, that's why so many people get mixed up in politics arguments. Well played.

I think that in communication, the most important thing is to correctly intone our voice. If we demand something we can't say that "in polite way" by our voice. Voice must be strong and confident and the words must be polite. It's the difference.
Sometimes I can say something incorrectly but not often.
Hmm I've checked this woman background and publications - she knows what she's doing but as I remember from one of the presentations - strong women doesn't like other strong women talking - it is similiar psychological effect to Alpha male fights. I think you might like that more if that was a man talking.

And yes tone of voice makes wonders. Just listen one of my favourites:

If you would like to learn more about this subject you've could try this one:
GRAHAM ADAM - PSYCHOMANIPULACJA
There is also audiobook version of it.
Yes but sometimes getting calm is the hardest way to do... and needs a lot of practice and training. I had to learn that very fast - on every shooting range no matter what happened through the day you have to get calm in few seconds, otherwise you would miss the shot (especially long range). That was a good preparation and helped me in many aspects of my live including conversations.

I think if you are not natural leader you can read many smart books, you can change your voice, you can do anything but you will not be a leader. Becoming a leader depends on personality. You can make you better leader, but not leader.
Good techniques but point 3 would be very problematic with big audiences - too many question would be asked in a short amount of pause given, tested.
That was the main idea - if you want to be confident you have to sound like a confident person. This is a two way street with many benefits from it :)
In my opinion, being confident makes a person more credible. I also like correct pronunciation, because I'm a purist. In addition if somebody sounds credible and uses a right tone, listeners will be intrested about this peroson's speech. The worst thing in speeching is when speaker talks about things using "boring voice". It makes listeners bored and they don't listen a discourse.
One thing that made me wonder - you wrote "I have never made tone execution incorrectly." - really ? Never ?

If think it will be useful for you. There is always a time when you talk to somebody - in school, in bus, at the shop - the usage of it is limitless.
Like your opinion. So we all have to practice at that.

Cool presentation. I wish I could use these advices, but I am such an emotional person, sometimes I can't control the expression - body language, mimics - real circus) my mom hates it:))
The problem is when people just couldn't hear themselves, so they don't control the tone of their speech. I know people, who sound quite rude, but they don't have the intention to offend someone, they just don't know how they sound.
It depends of the situation, if your work in politics or teach people, then you need to control yourself and speak in a right way. But in everyday life I prefer people, who are speaking naturally - it seems more sincerely to me.
I know you from the last semester ZMA classes as I think - you have a very nice voice - get use of it :) The language barrier might be hard for you. Don't worry it will pass while training.

I can recommend you one of the audiobooks:
http://audioteka.com/pl/audiobook/sila-glosu

Also psychomanipulations is a series that will get you much experience.
Someone told me few years ago that leaders are created on daily basis - it's just a process. I saw this many times - people I would never say that they could lead anyone or anything are currently one of the best and respected manages/project managers (just a few of them but they made it). On the other side they were few flaws when the leading role was not good for a big amount of people.
We both know a lot of people that make us angry just by listening to them :) Sometimes it's not just boring voice problem we have to face.
It takes a lot of guts to say out loud that sometimes you are saying something incorrectly - most people cannot do that. That's a big plus and good field to work on.
There is a good presentation made by Tomasz Knapik called Power of your voice. I always like to hear a lot from my Favorite lector.
And yes in current world a good speaking technique can help you a lot.
Hmm think about the time when you have tried to get a new met girl's phone number. What you said was not as important as the way you said it (of course within limits). The voice is crucial in that kind of situation - the best dating techniques include a lot of voice modeling.
There is always time for anything - good to know your point of view.

I think that people with confident voice tonality are more credible. They seem to be confident about what they are saying. And in my opinion correct pronunciation is very important for correct delivery of message and achieving goals. If you don't have correct pronunciation you seem not to care about people you're talking to or a topic you're talking about. It all creates an image of you. And if you combine it with nice and professional look (people judge by looks as one of the other article stated).
I know the power of my voice and I am very conscious of it. But even though it happens to me to sound different from what I wanted. Sometimes my boyfriend thinks I'm mad at him even though I am not, just because I've said something not the way I wanted. And if you want to be the leared or present in front of large audience this should happen as rarely as possible.
The leader doesn't have to be loud -the most feared person in my company is a woman 1,65 tall, very thin and someone that never raised her voice. But the way she talks to you makes you ill in no time - that's just perfect combination.
Just love this guy and the idea he never got yo politics. Have you heard him reading the manual on Eska Radio ? This rocks ;]
Have the same point of view and trying to practice on that every time and always have something new to learn.
Showing passion is OK - showing too lot of it in the message will get you treated like a lunatic - everyone who saw Balmer talking about Microsoft products knows what I'm taking about.

Body language, voice control, tonation, emotions, it all affects how we are perceived and how effective we are in being a good speaker.

I think people who sound so incredibly credible you are just amazed with it are the first you should consider as those who have zero idea about what they are talking about... also when I hear terms like "executive presence" I turn around and leave... ASAP if we want to stay in the corporate robot speak.

The voice is important thing but i really prefer when team leader is nice to me and ask me to do something without screaming or something like that. For me talk is more effective then good voice because people want to treat them on the same level without pushing them to low level then your boss.

I've never been a team leader in this meaning but I've made some presentations. Everybody knows that non verbal communication is major case in presentation. I've seen many articles how to modern voice, how to move, etc. It's a fact that people with confident voice, very good pronunciation are more credible. About second question - yes I've made tone execution incorrectly to a situation many times but I always try to hide it by telling joke or something like this and after this situation I try to draw conclusions to do it better.

The voice and it's tone is very important but if you don't have anything wise to say it won't help :)
This video shows us few 'tricks', I find it helpful, thanks!

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
