Week 12 [25.01.21-31.01.21] Pandemic situation in MMORPG

 

Corrupted Blood Incident was an unplanned "event" that happened in world famous MMORPG World of Warcraft. Uncontrolled debuff exited locked instance because of bug and this debuff infected players, NPCs and pets.



Questions

1. What do you think about usage of data gathered during this event in social studies and epidemiology?

2. What do you think about presented pandemic players archtypes in this video. Are they reliable to our current situation in real life?

3. Do you play any MMORPG? Especially in our current times.

1. You are always asked about your agreement to surrender your data to them. I personally didn't agree for that. I think that they already have a lot of data and can build pretty good statistics on top of that.

2. Yes, there are always morons. I visited my sister in Odessa and in this particular city it is like if epidemic was never a thing. No one wears masks, not saying about sanitizer dispensers. And you know what? People in Odessa are true assholes. So the theory is seems right once again.

3. I once wanted to try oyt WOW. But never tried actually. It takes to much time to play MMORPG games. Not my thing. I enjoy competitive games more. Like CS.
My uncle was playing World of Warcraft a lot at that time. I heard this story from him when I was 8 years old. After many years, I came across epidemiological analyzes of this situation and I was amazed that someone wanted to conduct research based on a computer game.

1. As far as I know, much of this data has been used in research on bioterrorism. Usefulness of that data cannot be denied, but it is worth remembering the environmental differences between the game and the real world. Uncle told me that it actually took some time to fix this bug in WoW, but the administration was resetting the servers to reduce number of deaths. It's a tool that we don't have access to IRL.

2. These archetypes are possible to encounter the IRL. The biggest difference to me is that none of the players questioned being infected. There was no doubt that this plague was spreading. There was no doubt that this plague is going to kill the in-game character. The game very clearly informed you about your amount of Health Points and the status of the current debuffs (diseases).

3. As a big fan of MMORPGs, I really regret that the selection of titles available today is so limited. WoW is one of the last strongholds of real online games, but you can discuss the direction of development and progressive simplifications compared to the "good old days". In my opinion, a great move was to open an old school servers with an old version of the game.

It is quite funny that data from a computer game can be used for serious purposes.

2. What do you think about presented pandemic players archtypes in this video. Are they reliable to our current situation in real life?

I believe that people pretending to be themselves while playing MMORPG like World of Warcraft, so I am not surprised that those architypes are present in real life.

3. Do you play any MMORPG? Especially in our current times.

Currently I play only CS:GO, but I used to play World of Warcraft for 4 years.

I heard about that "event" before and I was really suprised. In my opinion all the data gathered from that can be really usefull in social studies and epidemiology studies. The process of spread and the set of dependencies is pretty similiar as in the real world, and such as a experiment (or event which took place by mistake, not on purpose like this) can provide a good chunk of data to examine. And of course all of this took place in let's say "secure" environment, with no real harm to people lives.

Some of the presented player archetypes was really similiar to the people archetypes in the current pandemic.

I used to play a lot of MMO RPG games, there is so much fun when playing them, and all of the big community and awareness that we play with thousands of people at the same time in same area is just great. But for now, Im not playing any MMORPG game anymore. They usually require to spend a lot of time playing it, and that is a problem.

1. Well, as its mechanics, I think, is very different from real-life diseases, such data shouldn't be very important for epidemiology. But it can be useful for some social studies, as a reaction to unexpected stress or emotional relation to the video games.

2. I don't think so. It's a game and if you're too serious about it - you will definitely have problems one day, in one way or another. Also, there are some in-game rules and you can't just break them, cause they are the part of the game, it's impossible. If anyone chooses to be a troll in such a situation - it is possible only if the game rules allow it, and if you're not okay with it - maybe you should find a game with rules which seem better for you. In the real world nowadays you can, for example, don't wear a mask. It's banned due to rules, but it is physically possible. So the difference is that in a game, even if you think that someone is a bad person, their behaviour is still legal.

3. No, but I'm playing offline computer games and DnD on a discord server.

I heard about that event. I consider it as a really clever idea but when it comes to data gathered during it well... It may have some uses, sure why not. But I can't really tell if it's relevant in many terms. People behave and act differently in real life and when they are not interacting face to face.

I think I can see some similartities when it comes to the these archetypes.
3. Do you play any MMORPG? Especially in our current times.
Not anymore but i used to play it. I'm still in touch with people i played before but i'm not playing.

1. I think it's brilliant. It somewhat allowed to gather full data of ongoing epidemy in safe environment. I mean study like this is invaluable, especially now. And the fact that it was conducted previously and without any real deaths is astounding. It's amazing how our online social interactions are indifferent to real world ones. There's another upside to that kind of study. Whatever happens in the game, can be precisely tracked, checked and redo. It's a possibility, we don't have in real life.

2. I believe so. Looking throughout the wolrd, we can see multiple archtypes of people with different approaches to pandemic. From sterile and serious, to "pandemy is a myth" ones. In my opinion, it's 100% reliable to our current situation. As mentioned above, online social interactions mimic real ones, with astounding precision.

3. I used to, but I'm lacking time lately. My last MMORPG was Metin2, i guess everyone know what that is. Only other mmorpg I played was tibia. It was old, ugly and limited, but boy oh boy, I had some fun there.

It's funny because my uncle is also the person who dragged me into WoW. There are couple of titles that are still on board e.g. The Old Republic - if you like Star Wars, Elder Scrolls Online - if you like other games from this series like Morrowind or Skyrim. I've been playing new expansion in WoW and it's pretty enjoyable how this game looks now.

I wonder if developers can still make planned events like this in games for gathering data like this. It would be awesome that gamers can help in developement of some studies.

I think that if we take into considerations that people are acting differently in real life and studies can still be relevant, surely death in game is not that tragic in real life but people in games don't want to die, even if penalty is only time to wait.
Nowadays almost every company wants to gather data about their customers. As now most games are online, games companies are able to collect almost every data about gamers, as many of them buy stuff for ingame profits. I think using this data in social studies can be useful.
I think nowadays we can’t really define archetypes because of the variety of gamers. I believe that we can’t define exact archetypes.
I do play MMORPG games, mainly WOW now. During the pandemic I returned to many games, especially to spend more time with my friends online if I can’t meet them in real life.
