Week 12 [25.01.21-31.01.21] Do We Live in a Simulation?

Increasingly, people are asking themselves: Is life in a simulation possible? Therefore, there are more and more ways and solutions to determine how it is possible, and whether there is a chance for it ... Currently, a man can distinguish reality from a computer game in a very simple way, but who knows how quickly it can change. We already have access to games and the VR world, which simulates reality quite well. Watch the video below and find out if there is a possibility that we live in a simulation and what assumptions will prove it.

  1. Do you sometimes have this strange feeling known to us as déjà vu and do you think it may have a connection to a simulated life? If you had déjà vu, describe your feelings.

  2. Have you ever used VR or have Google VR at home? What do you think about virtual reality or maybe make us realize that we can live in a simulated world?

  3. Do you think that there is a chance to meet the assumptions discussed in the film?

I just love such theories of conspiracy! When it comes to living in a simulation I used to watch a lot of short videos about it, but I do it rather for fun than to truly believe it. I sometimes have déjà vu, however I wouldn’t say that it is connected to living in a simulation. I have heard a theory saying that it is connected to your past life. Sometimes I felt like I dreamed about something that happened later in my life. For example, I saw a house and I felt like I had already seen it in my dreams, but not in my real life. It feels really strange and makes me very nostalgic. I suddenly start thinking a lot about the world, about our life, what is actually happening on earth and what is the meaning of our life. But I feel like it also makes me more excited and curious about everything. I would even say that I like it? Because it brings something new and strange to my life. It makes me feel like life is something more than just being born and dying. I don’t believe in any religion so personally, when I think about life, I see it as a quite boring thing, without any meaning. Just a biological phenomenon. I always really wanted to experience something special, something that would give me the feeling that there is something more. Unfortunately, my life is so boring and nothing has ever happened to me except of déjà vu. This is why I am quite excited about it. Now the question is, if déjà vu is really because of my dreams, like I always feel it? Or maybe simulation? Or my past life? I will probably never know. But I love reading about such theories!

I have never used any VR but I do not see it as anything more than just an entertainment. Even if we lived in a simulation, I do not think that people would discover it by making VR. I mean, it shows us that something like this is possible, that it is possible to feel like living in a different world, but for me connecting VR with a theory of simulation is just too much. Even though I am not a religious person, there is something about me that makes me believe more in such theories like past life than a simulation. It just feels like more possible for me. Maybe because I see simulation as something new, something connected to technology like VR, and when it comes to the past life, there are so many beliefs about it, books, hypnosis, some strange situations where a baby told you a whole story about their past life that they shouldn’t even be able to say… But it is all just a feeling, when it comes to the opinion, I do not have any specific one. I like talking about it and getting to know more theories and ideas, but I do not have any belief which I would truly believe and convince others to believe it.

I also watched two movies, one of them is on netflix, the other one I don’t know. The one from Netflix is called “The discovery” and is about a scientist who discovered a machine which shows what is happening with a soul after death. I wouldn’t call it the most entertaining movie ever, however it makes you think, ask questions and consider our reality. The other one is the more famous “Truman show”. I know that some people call it fascinating and everything, but for me it was just entertaining but didn’t really make me question the reality. It just shows that I am more into past life and death theories than simulation.

I love too conspiracy theories! I haven't heard about such a déjà vu theory, thanks for the information!

Right, VR isn't enough to feel something like that, we can live in a simulation. I wanted to show an example that is closest to this to show that we can create simulations. Imagine how this could develop. Instead of goggles VR, we can connect the brain to a computer and I think then it will be hard to tell whether we are in a computer game or in the real world.

I like such films very much, it's strange that I haven't heard of this film. Thanks for the recommendation “The discovery”! The movie "Truman show" was good, but I don't count it among my favorite movies
To begin with, I have been interested in the simulation hypothesis for a very long time, both from the purely astrophysical and philosophical side. It is extremely interesting and I regularly come across new hypotheses that can complement it in a very interesting way. It is worth noting that currently popular science films and articles refer to the simulation hypothesis as a digital representation of our entire reality. This is not surprising, because this is how our human civilization understands simulation. However, when looking at the definition, the word simulation does not require that this closed system is digital. Our computers and technology run on energy and electricity. For a civilization superior to us, their technology may be completely different, for example based on matter or physical forces. The easiest way to present this hypothesis to audience is on the basis of a classic computer as we know it, but neither in the original form of this hypothesis Nick Bostrom, nor anyone later imposed, that this simulation must take place in the form as we know it. The simulation we talk about is a sandbox of some alien who, at the time of the big bang, put the right amount of matter and energy into a closed system to watch what happens. An interesting thought experiment would be to consider the aspect that our reality was specially impoverished by one dimension. Just as we humans can limit simulation to 2D, our reality has also been limited to 3D by the creator, which lives natively in four-demensional reality.

1. Déjà vu is already a sufficiently well-researched biological mechanism. I am not an expert, but now scientists recognize this phenomenon as a delay in the processing of some information from the optic nerves and a lack of synchronization between the conscious and subconscious analysis of acquired by brain patterns. The Déjà vu motif was presented in the movie Matrix and that is why it is such a popular element of this hypothesis.

2. Digging into successive simulated worlds is the opposite of the process that will lead us to the answer of this hypothesis. We should look for errors and simplifications on the macro scale of the entire universe to understand the technology of superior reality.

3. Yes, and we actualy can mathematicly prove that.

Very nice interests. People very often define unknown phenomena through their experiences and acquired knowledge, not going beyond what they already know, thinking "out of the box" definitely helps with such issues
1. Dejavu is a very interesting phenomenon and recently it seems to me that I have it once a month on average. Mostly at such moments I start to smile and laugh because I think I am able to predict the future.

2. No, I've never used VR, but I'd love to try it. But back to the point, it seems to me that we live in a normal world. I enjoy having arguments based on facts rather than guesswork. So far, there is no proof of life in the simulation, so I don't think there is one.

3. I think it is impossible.

I have short periods in my life when I get deja vu a lot, it is very strange feeling like this what is happening right now already happened, and often when I already feel that it is déjà vu I feel like I know what will happen in the next few seconds because I already experienced it. I don’t think that it is a connection to a simulated life, many things may cause it including vitamin deficiency.

I used VR once or twice, but it wasn’t very pleasant because I have the worst car sickness and I felt really bad while using it. I think that it would be really messed up if I was in a simulation using VR and someone simulated that I in simulation can’t use VR because of car sickness.

The assumptions are interesting and of course, all of them are somehow possible. But I’m most skeptical about the third one that advanced civilizations don’t destroy themselves. I think that it’s impossible, just like our planet is getting destroyed and getting to the end. Of course, maybe it is only simulated and the planet we really are on is fine.

I had the same feeling using google VR even though I am not seasick. When you put on your glasses and play too long, our brains are tricked. The brain registers movement and the body is not moving, which makes you feel unwell.
Do you sometimes have this strange feeling known to us as déjà vu and do you think it may have a connection to a simulated life? If you had déjà vu, describe your feelings.
Yes, this happened to me a few times.
Have you ever used VR or have Google VR at home? What do you think about virtual reality or maybe make us realize that we can live in a simulated world?

Yes, I bought VR glasses. I used them maybe 2 times to watch videos on youtube. I think it's a cool experience. I highly recommend playing games using VR on PlayStation for example or watching movies.
Do you think that there is a chance to meet the assumptions discussed in the film?
It's hard to say
Do you sometimes have this strange feeling known to us as déjà vu and do you think it may have a connection to a simulated life? If you had déjà vu, describe your feelings.
Yes, I have experienced deja vu multiple times. It's always a such bizarre feeling, which I can't really describe.
Have you ever used VR or have Google VR at home? What do you think about virtual reality or maybe make us realize that we can live in a simulated world?
I have used VR glasses, but not at home. In my opinion it's not great, I would say that this isn't for me. I simply don't enjoy it.
Do you think that there is a chance to meet the assumptions discussed in the film?
It's hard to say, but maybe at some point of human future it will be. There is very funny episode of Rick and Morty show in which this simulation theory appears. I guess that if it happens it won't be anytime soon.

1.Yes, I had deja vu several times. I remember the very first time I experienced it as a kid. I felt like I have an extra possibility to travel in time. Well, I don’t see it that way now. I think that it is very mysterious but at the same time I think that in 10 years of neurology development we will know the answer to the source of this experience.
2. I have tried vr in one of the mall shops. I was interested in the whole process and how it works. Unfortunatelly, I felt sick after trying this. I don’t know why but it made me that way. I think that the development of virtual reality is something that will eventually change out world.
3. It’s hard to say, but in my opinion there is little chance to meet these assumptions.
Haha this kind of theories are always so interesting and fun! (until some people take it too serious)

1.Do you sometimes have this strange feeling known to us as déjà vu and do you think it may have a connection to a simulated life? If you had déjà vu, describe your feelings.

I think that I have it pretty often. It always reminds me about Matrix movies. It might be some freeze or bug in the simulation system, that would be interesting for sure! When I was a kid and I had his feeling for the first time, I thought that it's some kind of magic and maybe I am the chosen one haha. I was watching a lot of magical girls shows, so I'm not surprised I got that idea.

2. Have you ever used VR or have Google VR at home? What do you think about virtual reality or maybe make us realize that we can live in a simulated world?

Yes, I actually work with it! It's a really cool device, but a lot of people has problems with moving in VR, because they get nauseous. So it would be really difficult to live in a simulation like this.

3. Do you think that there is a chance to meet the assumptions discussed in the film?

I don't really know, but it seem difficult.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
