Week 12 [15.06-21.06] Secrets of the underwater world

We think nothing in the world can surprise us anymore. Nothing could be further from the truth. We don’t really know how many secrets Mother Earth hides from us. As a matter of fact, the Earth is only a small piece of land that is surrounded by water in 70%. This 70% is 361 million square kilometers of water, which has been explored in only 5%. That’s why we don’t really realize what’s hidden in the depths of the oceans or seas.

The first very interesting phenomenon is the so-called “Milky sea” which is caused by the chemical reaction of plankton as a result of which this microorganism shines. It looks like a miracle of nature, but it is not because it is actually a defensive reaction of plankton against predators. If you want to see the ‘glowing sea”, go to beaches in countries such as: Australia, Japan, Thailand.

Now something very surprising, namely the river in the middle of the sea. Sounds absurd, but it is real. This river was discovered in 2010 and is the only one of its kind in the world so far. If this river streamed on the land it would be the sixth largest on earth. What’s more, it is deep enough to reach up to 40 metres in some places. It’s amazing that despite the depth, trees still grow there, in some places there are even small waterfalls and the sand forms something like a beach.

Kelp Forests also known as “ Underwater Forests”, which are known as one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. “ Kelps” are extremely long algae that make a habitat for a large number of animal species. Not only do the animals live there, but thanks to the Kelp Forests they can protect their young from danger, or they can take refuge from the storm. The animals that are most common there are, for example, whales, sea lions and seals.

The oceans hide monstrous creatures that have to endure extremely difficult conditions. Such creatures have had to develop hardiness and certain features over many millions of years to survive extra cold temperatures, small amounts of food, intensely high pressure, and lack of sunlight. Here are some examples of these creatures;
  • Tube- eye
  • Dragonfish
  • Anglerfish
  • Jellyfish
It is unusual and at the same time terrifying that we only know 5% of the underwater world. In fact we are just discovering what this underwater world hides from us.

Questions:
  1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
  2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
  3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?

Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I wuld really like to see "Underwater Forests" in order to see different animal species and explore the forest-like creation under the water. Glowing sea also sounds very impressive and intereseting to me, i am fascinated by the facts described in the article.

What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
I do believe that there are some unexplored underwater creatures of enormouse size.

Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
I heard about the Lion City is an ancient submerged city located beneath the Qiandao Lake in China. Despite more than 50 years underwater, the entire city has been preserved completely
1. I have to admit that I love to swim. All these phenomena that you have presented look wonderful. I would like to see at least one of them someday. "Milky see" made the biggest impression on me. Do you know it is possible to dive in this water?

2. Nobody confirmed it, but I have the impression that somewhere deep under water, hidden prehistoric monsters and other animals are hidden. I think these prehistoric animals can threaten humanity. Climate change will cause them to wake up. Of course this is just my vision :)

3. Coral reefs - everyone knows about them, everyone has heard of them, but not everyone saw them live. I had the opportunity to watch coral reefs in the Red Sea, and it was probably one of the best moments in my life. I will never forget this view and how many fish moved around me. A really special moment.

1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
Every single one of them is astonishing, but if I were to choose, I would go for underwater forest. However, a few years back I had a small incident while diving and long story short - now every sea creature scares me to death and I don’t think I would ever have guts to explore kelps. I suppose I will have to settle for photos and videos of it.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Sea creatures of enormous, as well as microscopic sizes. And probably unknown bacteria, fungus, maybe some of them deathly?
We will probably never find out - the area to explore is overwhelming, even to think of.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?

The Lost Villages of Ontario - ten communities permanently submerged by the creation of the Saint Lawrence Seaway in 1958. In some locations, a few remnants of sidewalks and building foundations can still be seen under the water, or even on the shoreline when water levels are sufficiently low.

1.
Milky sea seems like it would be amazing to witness in person, I guess that the combination on blue lights with water is very pretty plus it's a rare sight.

2.
There is this claim that most of the oceans are not yet discovered, I agree with that, I think that there's a lot to learn about what's under water. But I doubt that it will be much different to what we already know.

3.
No, not really.

1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I would like to see "the river in the middle of the sea" the most, because I can't find much information about this river at Google, I become even more curious. It is awesome that even trees still grow there, I can't imagine this scene, it must be wonderful!

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
The deeper the sea, the lower the temperature, the colder it feels, as well as the greater the pressure. It is difficult to imagine how the creatures of the deep sea survive, maybe they are more difficult to be extinct? Perhaps we can discover new prehistoric creatures from the deep sea? I hope so.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
Unfortunately, I don’t know much about it. I’ve heard of the Bermuda Triangle. I believe everyone may have heard of it, but in recent years some people say it’s just a scam.

Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
It's a hard question for me. On one hand deep sea is connected with darkness, so both seeing milk sea and creatures that glow in the dark would be an amazing experience. On the other full ecosystem beneath the sea surface also sounds as a astonishing place to see.
What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Yet another species of animals, that weren't seen before. They live in far different environment than we know and can operate in, so it's very hard to observe them.
Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
High water pressure and presence of life in such conditions are very interesting in itself, but sadly I don't know any nice trivia about it to elaborate on it more.

1. I have actually seen the phenomenon of luminescent beaches caused by breeding plankton. This happens once in 4-5 years on Los Angeles beach and I and my parents were very lucky to see that!

2. I can't guess, I am not a biologist. But I think that these are some really exquisite forms of life down there. The resources are few and that probably involved in some really strange creatures to be able to survive.

3. Yes, I was amazed by really rich fauna around underwater thermal vents. It was hard to imagine that life can thrive in such deep water in such abundance.
1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?

I would like to see “Milky sea” mostly because it has something magical about it. The effect it makes looks really magical. I would need perhaps really great camera to take a lot of photos

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?

To be honest, I am not really interested in this case but after what I saw in the article I would deep into that :)

1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I would like to see the underwater forest the most, in the pictures it looks like a labyrinth. Swimming in such a forest would make me feel like a character from a movie who is looking for treasure or want to save someone. In addition, I think I would have a chance to see animals unknown to me hiding between the leaves.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
I think that deep oceans are completely unknown to us yet and if you want you can literally hide everything that is able to survive in the conditions there: treasures, secret devices and much more. In addition, the depths as a different ecosystem may hide many unknown species of animals and plants, maybe there are hitherto unexplored chemicals ...

3.Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
Snell's window is one of the interesting underwater phenomena. It looks fabulous in the pictures. A person under water is able to see everything above the water surface if the sun is shining at the right angle. Brinicle that is ice stalactite is another interesting phenomenon. They arise in frigid oceanic waters around the poles.

1.Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?

I'm afraid to swim and be on the water. I haven't been interested in this until now. I think that all the phenomena you have presented are very interesting. In addition, it is worth mentioning a fact, namely. Only three people have reached the deepest place on Earth. This point is 11 km below its surface. And to the deepest place so far penetrated outside the Earth - the Moon - 12 people have already arrived there.

2.What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Due to the depths and difficult conditions in the depths, it is very difficult for divers to move and there are no possibilities to explore as much as on the surface. From time to time there is information about a new discovery, for example finding a completely unknown animal or plant species. I think that because of the enormous pressure and lack of light, there are no human-like creatures deeply in the assessments.

3.Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
I'm most interested in what's going on under the ice of the Arctic. It is said that scientists have discovered a mysterious source of heat under the ice of the Antarctic, which has a gigantic impact on the melting of the ice, and this may undermine the theory of rapidly advancing global warming.

1. I think I will connect response to this question with a 3rd one, but If I had to choose one more phenomenon, I would choose to see the Kelp Forest. It must be something extraordinary to experience something like this. I would like to swim in it for a bit and look at sea lions and seals.

2. I guess there can be a whole new world hidden just underneath our feet. Considering the fact that it is impossible to examine the seabed in every little detail, I think that, as you wrote in your article, we will be surprised plenty of times by what is hidden in the sea. I do hope that scientists will be able to find new animals and plants there, it was always something, that I have found very fascinating.

3. No, I don’t think so. But I have seen the phenomenon you wrote about – Milky Sea. It was 3 years ago in Panama, we were staying in the hotel located on the slope just above the sea, and one day we had a show full of flashes, blicking and out of this world experience. It was so fascinating I remember it very sharply to this day!
1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I think milky sea looks awesome and it would be nice to have oportunity to see that. It looks so unusual and awesome.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
I don't think there are more phenomenon hidden in the depths of the water. Probably we explored every possible animal there.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
I read about brinicle which is concentrated salt water escapes from ice above sea level and when it goes under water it freezes again into brinicles. If you are interesting, google it to see images... :)

1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I will choose the first phenomena, “Milky sea”. It really looks like a miracle, so beautiful. I want to see it in my own eyes. And also I liked an “Underwater Forests”, it is very unusual and colourful.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
I don`t know, as I am not an expert in this. Maybe there are more terrifying creatures, or underwater cities like Atlantis, or there is nothing at all, who knows? :D

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
As I have mentioned I am not good at this topic. I just know some interesting facts about water and their habitats. For example, some species of fish evolved into smaller sizes so as not to become food for humans.

1. Which of the above-mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?

I would love to see the Milky sea! It looks so mysterious and magical like the stars in the sky. If I would happen to be in one of these countries I would definitely try to see the aforementioned phenomena.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?

For sure more undiscovered species in the depths of water hardly available for humans for instance in the oceans. Also some people for sure tried to create something out there, what could've ended up a failure and there is just some remainings under the water of some buildings. Also sunken ships are thereof sure.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden underwater?

Unfortunately, I have not obtained the knowledge you require. But I am quite curious what can be hidden under the Arctic ice. So many unexplored mysteries could hide that area.

1. I would love to see the Milky Sea, it looks like taken out of a fairy tale. The Underwater Forests seem very interesting too but I suppose it requires diving skills and I've never done it before.
2. I'm not sure. I suppose there are a lot of fascinating underwater animals and plants.Perhaps knowing about them would help to understand much about the creation of the world.
3. Unfortunately I cannot recall anything more now than what you have already said. When I was younger I used to watch Discovery channel, I think I should get back to that to learn something new.
1 / I would love to admire the first phenomenon called “Milky sea”. It is amazingly beautiful and it takes my breath away from beauty ...
2 / Humanity has so far studied only 40% of the oceans and water bodies on planet earth. Therefore, I think that in one day, Godzilla and the Loch Ness monster will appear to the world.
3 / Yes, I certainly can recall from such ...
Plants at the bottom of the artificial Abraham Lake in Canada produce methane all winter. Bubbles of gas float to a frozen surface and literally crowd under the ice as the lake freezes deeper. Yes, the idea of setting fire to the lake suggests itself, and scientists from the University of Alaska have already done this. Lit.
1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
Underwater forests are the best of all of them. I would like to see it the most. It looks amazing, I can imagine diving there and see this beautiful view.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Maybe there are a lot of weird fish, saying weird I mean not discovered species which looks strange.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
No, I was not interested in the topic, thats why I don’t know anything interesting phenomena about under water lifecycle.
1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
The fact about the river was very surprising to me and interesting as well. It is quite absurd that there could be a river under the ocean. How would you even define that.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
I think there are many things that still stay unknown so there could be everything even far beyond our imagination. That is why I think oceans are as interesting as scary. I would love to dive deep in the ocean and check what is laying at the bottom of it but I think that might be very disturbing and also dangerous.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
To be honest no, I haven't read about such things
Hello, here are my replies to your questions!

1. I'd love to see the “Milky sea” phenomena since it simply looks amazing. It reminds me of the night sky full with glowing stars. Seems like a very romantic setting to me.

2. I'm sure that there are many yet undiscovered creatures waiting for us down there, at the bottom of the sea… Us humans are very limited when it comes to diving so it's very tough for us to study oceans' bottoms. And let's not forget that water covers 71% of our planet so we're taking about huge bodies of water to research. Who knows if there's a giant sea monster hiding somewhere in the depths...

3. I've heard about "the living balloon on a string" which was recently discovered in the Indian Ocean. It looks very alien but is probably very docile and feeds of plankton in the water. Life on Earth still hides many mysteries.

1.I probably would want to see the Milky sea the most. It looks out of this world. But also wouldn't say no the other ones - they look amazing as well. It was hard to choose :)

2.I did read that the oceans are the most unknown places in the world, so who knows what could be hidden in their depths. Probably some weird animals and maybe some unknown creatures. Deep down there is so much to discover and we can't dive that deep with todays technology. So there is a lot to discover ahead of us.

3.I would really want to know some more but never dived deep into the subject. So I cannot recall anything interesting.
1. Which of the above-mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
if I have to choose one of the above mentioned phenomena that I would like to see the most then I would choose “Milky sea” and I would choose this one because this look amazing at night and I don't have to go underwater or do anything special to see this, I can just open a beer and enjoy the views
2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Well maybe the Atlantis civilization full of sirens and with a crashed UFO spaceship nearby
3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
I can't think of any other amazing discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water
Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I would like to see unknown creatures which are very deep under water. It's the most interesting for me and I'm very curious what they might look like

What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
No I don't know but I think that we would be very surprised about the shapes of these creatures and about their survival mechanisms. Maybe researching such creatures would help explain many of the serious problems of today's life
1. Each of the phenomena listed in this material is fascinating. The river in the middle of the sea sounds very interesting. I have never heard of such a thing.
2. As mentioned at the beginning, the waters of this world were examined only in 5%, which is why I believe that these waters still contain huge amounts of fascinating and breathtaking things. However, water is very dangerous and unpredictable and can also contain many hazards. These waters may contain various natural phenomena that we have never seen or animal species we do not know about. Everything is possible.
3. In my opinion, the corolate reef is a fantastic phenomenon. Whenever I watch nature programs and they relate to the coral reef, I admire its beauty and the richness of the vegetation and animals. Seeing it live is probably the dream of many people in the world.
Yes, you can swim in such water. As far as I know, in Thailand you can take a boat with a group of other people to the middle of the sea and admire this phenomenon, sometimes you can even swim in this water.
Thanks for the information. I'm very interested in this source of heat under the ice of Antarctic- I'll certainly read about it.
Oh, great. Thank you so much for that. I'll be sure to read about it in my spare time because it looks very interesting.
Oh thanks for this fun fact, it's amazing that animals didn't want to be eaten by humans so much that they had to change their size to smaller. Nature surprises at every turn.
Thanks for the information! Here I agree with you one hundred percent - nature surprises at every turn.
1. Which of the above mentioned phenomena would you like to see the most and why?
I think the first one. It seems to be very interesting and perfect for night photoshoot.

2. What else do you think can be hidden in the depths of the water?
Maybe Kraken or Cthulu? But seriously the depths of the water hide a lot of ulgy creatures because of lack of light, so everything could be possible.

3. Do you know any other discoveries or interesting phenomena that are hidden under water?
Unfortunately I can't call anything interesting to mind now.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
