Week 11 [1.06-7.06] Free Solo

Free soloing – is a form of technical ice or rock climbing where the climbers climb alone without ropes, harnesses or other protective equipment, forcing them to rely entirely on their own individual strength and skill.

Sounds scary? Because it is. The greatest achivment in free solo climbing was achived in 2017 by Alex Honnold. He reached the summit of one of the iconic El Capitan mountain in Yosemite National Park. Almost 900 m of almost vertical wall. The video down below shows a little form that achivment in 360 deegrees so feel free to look around.

In 2018 the movie „Free Solo” was made where Alex Honnold repeted the climb and everything was recorded. The movie won an Oscar in 2019 in Best Documentary Film category.

1.       Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
2.       What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
3.       Do you like or would like to try climbing?

Comments

Until now, I haven't heard of them, although after what I read, I think they are even cool characters. As for the film in 360 degrees, I think this technology is great. Thanks to it we can literally see every detail. An interesting fact about recording in 360 degrees is that several wide-angle lenses record these films, and then a special algorithm combines the films into one. I have climbed several times in my life and it is great fun, but I prefer normal climbing above that on the climbing wall.

1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?

Free solo is such a cool guy. I've always been a big fan of his, ever since he went to Yosemite. He's a unique sort of extreme climber. I've never seen anyone climb something like he does, the way that he climbs. I can't wait to see what he does next, especially in high-altitude conditions.

2. What do you think about the short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you like it?

I would say it's a little better than video on 360 headsets but not as good as first-person. I really don't like watching 360 video in a seated position. Even though it looks good and it's pretty fun to watch in VR if I'm about to do something a step too far and I'm moving too slowly my eyes adjust and see the world from the middle of the room and the 360 video begins to glitch.

3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?

I used to climb most days, but at that time I didn't get much exercise, and that made my muscles weak. But since I started to climb, I got healthier and strong.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
Yes I've watched few shortcuts from this film. It's scary and I think kind of stupid, he is climbing like he don't have anything to lose and from what I remember he has a girlfriend or wife.
2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
I like this idea. In my opinion every sport discipline should be recorded in 360 degrees.
It looks amazing and I think it could be linked with the vr glasses.
3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
I like climbing. Sometimes I climb with my friend in the climbing center, it's one of my favorite sports, but I want to try climbing in the mountains once.

1 I don’t think I have, unfortunately. I think he is a bit insane, to climb such difficult and dangerous walls, but on the other hand, aren’t we all a bit insane when it comes to fulfilling our passions?

2 I love it! I have always read about this type of climbing in books or seen it on photographs. But to be actually able to at least a bit maneuver in these unfamiliar surroundings, experience difficulties that Alex faced while climbing – it sure was something unexpected and breathtaking! I am thrilled, as you can see.

3 Oh, I think I have answered this question this semester at least 4 times, so sorry for my short reply. I do like rope and wall climbing, I love the atmosphere that mountains create, and I admire every chance I have to go hiking. But climbing presented by Alex Honnold is a bit too much for me. I think I’m too clumsy to trust my body with such a dangerous task.
1. I haven’t heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before. I think that he must be crazy that he doesn’t fear that kind of activity.
2. I like the scenes where you could look around while he was climbing. When i looked down i felt like Donkey in Shrek.
3. I would like to try climbing on climbing wall, but i am no interested into climbing mountains even with all the equipment. I think it is unnecessary danger.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?

I haven't heard about Alex or his project before but I have to admit that I am impressed. Preparing and planning of such a project must have taken a lot of time and organising but it turned out great. I admire people with passion who are freaks of a particular subject. This man has his passion and he will ddo anything that he can to achieve his goals. Thanks to his 360 project we can become a part of it.

2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?

I loved it. Many people create 360 degrees projects but not many actually edit them. Usually such things are just recorded but here we can watch a whole document made with 360 camera. Great idea and great execution.

3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?

I have only tried those climbing walls indoors and I really enjoyed it. Climbing actual rocks doesn't seem like a sport for me but I respect anyone who does it. It takes a lot of comittment, discipline and cold blood to be a part of such climbing community.

Yes, I've heard about it before, it is a bit similar to buildering, which I was following for a while. People who climb like that, say that they train extensively and long and are very prepared to each climbing attempt. On the other hand everyone can make a mistake sometimes, for example on a bad day. In their case a mistake would cost them their lives. In my opinion what they do is irrational.

What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
The sound atmosphere, filled with silence and nature is very appealing to me. It's a pity I don't have a virtual reality device to watch it "from inside".

Do you like or would like to try climbing?
I used to climb on my sports classes at university. I was enjoying it very much. It's a bit too individual activity to practice it often.

1. I have not heard about him before. However I am very impressed with what he can do. I can't imagine how much training and peace of mind such climbing requires. I truly respect him for what he is able to do.
2. I really like the possibilities offered by a 360-degree film. In my opinion it is one of the best technical inventions in film production.
3. I think I tried it only once in my life and it was a very low climbing wall. I'm not just really not into it. I enjoy other outdoor activities like for example horse riding.

1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?

I have never heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold. Moreover, I have never seen anyone climbing without a rope, which so dangerous and this man must be very courage and professional, person who is looking for some adventure in his life.
2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?

I really liked the video and an opportunity to have a view in every direction, that was fascinating and informative.
3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?

I have never tried climbing and unfortunately i have acrophobia and it is not very comfortable for me even to stand at the balcony, I was nervousing for this guy, while watching the video, can`t imagine what he feels when he looks down, quite scary. So even if I try i will do it with a rope.
Viktor Ryś said…
1.
No. I think that Alex is very brave that he climbs without any rope any without anyone near him that could support him.

2.
I am not a big fan of shooting films in 360 degrees, often the quality is worse, and it gives you the possibility of looking not where the author of the movie intended.

3.
I've tried climbing once, and survived it, I did quite well actually, but don't know anybody that could assist me and teach me stuff. I would definitely like to come back to it one day.

1. 1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
I’ve never heard of free solo or Alex Honnold. But after watching this video I can tell that he for sure is kind of insane. I quite understand what motivates such people, although it still blows my mind that they are doing this willingly, knowing that one wrong move might cost them lives.

2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
When I first watched the video before reading your article I had no clue it was in 360 degrees, thus I’ve found this video quite weird because there were a few moments where the view was kind of frozen. Anyway, I really enjoyed it and the way it was recorded made the whole experience much more cooler.

3.  Do you like or would like to try climbing?
I’ve never climbed but I was recently considering visiting a climbing wall but I’m afraid that my muscles are too weak and that would be rather painful experience.

No, I haven't. And I am not into extreme sports.
2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
Yes, would be awesome if they did documentaries in VR next.
3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
No, most certainly not. I think it is unnecessary risk, not that worth doing.
1 / Yes, I watched an autobiographical film about him and his hobbies. For me it is both inspiration and a terrible nightmare! I'm terribly afraid of heights.
2 / Yes, the short version is also good, many frames are simply fantastic.
3 / No, no and no. (I am terribly afraid)
Answering your questions:

1. No, I have never heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before, until now, because I am not interested in extreme sport; it's not for me, I am calm guy.

2. Yes, the 360 degree short documentary is really great. This trend has been around for two years. I think it's great, you can see what's going on behind or on the sides.

3. No, I don't think I would like to try climbing. It's not for me - I prefer a bit safer sports, such as swimming, because I love swimming.

1. I've heard about free solo but not about this guy. I wasn't intrested in this kind of hobby but after reading your post I'll consider some deeper learning about climbing and maybe try it by myself! Of course I'd love to try it under safer conditions. To be honest I've heard about some polish guy who does some insane building climbing, but unfotyunately I can't recall his name ;(

2. Yes, i enjoyed this 360 degree short documentary. This trend is pretty cool and I think, it's nice to have this kind of option to choose from. At first it seems weird but I got used to this feeling.

3. I'm sooo afraid of climbing and none of my family members could encourage me to even think about this sport but I'd love to try at least once. Maybe next year I'll plan to research this topic more.

1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
I have seen similar extreme hobbies like climbing rocks and buildings. But I did not know that it was called Free Solo and did not hear about this particular person. I think he is fearless. It takes courage and perseverance to do what he does. Perhaps he is an ambassador if I may say so to this sport.

2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
Yes, that's a good idea. Most likely it’s especially good and exciting to watch with virtual reality glasses. Perhaps these cameras are one of the most progressive innovations in the field of video blogging.

3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
Yes, I would like to try myself in this sport, despite the fact that this is not a completely safe occupation. But I would certainly start from a different level, less dangerous. Something like climbing an artificial mountain with safety tools.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
I have never heard about them, probably because I am not interested in topic. I admire their courage. They have to be really strong in physics way but not only. Their mindset is really great to fully trust only their bodies. They are really crazy, but I like it.

2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
Mostly, I don’t like documentary in 360 degrees on the other hand it is really cool to watch it if it is made in right way. This is the one of them which I enjoy watching.

3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
I have tried but I don’t enjoy it that much. I have a lot of friends which are climbing and they are really good in it. I am not good enough to go with them on their trips in mountains. Moreover I started to do it indoor and I would recommend everyone to try it as well.

1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?

I have heard about Free Solo before, but I think it had a different name, I can't really remember what was it. I haven't heard about Alex Hannold though, it is quite remarkable what he did, this is a very dangerous hobby but the views must be worth it!

2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?

I think that this is a great way to show and convey the atmosphere, but it is still so far from the original experience. I guess that adrenaline and fear are a huge part of this sport , and I can't really feel that from the comfort of my own couch.

3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?

If it would be 100% safe then I think I could try it. It seems like you have to be strong but also flexible to climb and I think I'm lacking the latter. My type of sport is definitely horizontal sports, especially football.

1.       Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
I have never heard of the man referred to in the article. I'm not interested in climbing.

2.       What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
I have been interested in films shot in 360 degrees since YouTube enabled adding and playing such a format - somewhere around 2015. A very nice idea. Today, the Equipment already allows you to record such movies in very good resolution for not much money.

3.       Do you like or would like to try climbing?
I think I could try climbing, but I'm currently doing something completely different.
When it comes to outdoor sports, I prefer water-related ones.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
I have never heard of him like all other climbers and I would probably never have heard of him if it wasn't for your presentation. I think he's really brave, climbing alone without any safety at such heights is not for everyone.
2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you like it?
Yes, I like it very much but shooting these shots must be really tiring you need to climb three times on the same sections, first to set the camera and then shoot the shot then take it again and set it in a new place over and over again ... no wonder it's such a short video
3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
I have to say that I am not a climbing fan, maybe I do not have a great fear of heights but I am not brave enough to climb by myself to such heights even with safeguard well even with team I would not decide to climb.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
2. What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?
3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
1. No, I haven't heard anything about it before, they seem to be very interesting people with a really fascinating hobby.
2. I've watched 360-degree films before, but never a documentary - I think it's an interesting variation, maybe in the future we'll see them more often in films. In my opinion, there should be some kind of auto-navigator that will control the camera itself when the user stops.
3. I used to try but much less professional style, it was also on a real scale but we had a lot of facilities and security. It's certainly a very nice and healthy activity - even on a small wall it can be very demanding to enter.
I have never heard about free solo or Alex Honnold before. I think he is amazing, because climbing like this can be very difficult and dangerous. I admire people who can do things like this and don’t freak out. I enjoyed this documentary, the 360 degrees option makes it even more awesome. I have actually tried climbing in my life. When I was younger, I was on a climbing camp, and after few days of practice on a fake wall we actually went for real mountain climbing. Of course, it wasn’t big mountains but still it was a lot of fun. I would like to try it again sometime.
1. I haven't heard about this film, neither about Alex, however, I know about this extreme sport and I've watched some footage about it before. Alex seems to have a mind of steel and I cannot get over my awe of his skills. However, I'd say he is an adrenaline junkie and he is gambling with his life a bit, but if he doesn't have people depending on him I guess he is free to do whatever he fancies.

2. I loved it! I'm am a fan of 360 technique and its uses. I'd love to have a camera like that and relive my hiking trips while in Warsaw.

3. I did a little climbing but only on the artificial climbing walls. I must say that looking down is a bit scary for me, I cannot imagine how I would feel on a wall without any protection, especially that big as in the video. I would probably freeze and become a permanent decoration on this wall :D

1.I heard about him, watched the movie "Free Solo" and really liked it. It even got an Oscar award! I actually have huge respect for Alex Honnold - his climbing career is crazy. I like the way he thinks and goes about his life. He is very laid back and passionate - the perfect combo.

2.The documentary is really cool but I prefer normal movies. Good idea for capturing the moments though :)

3.I did climb before my wrist injury and really liked it. I was going bouldering a few times a week so I got to a good level of skills. Now I'm thinking of going back and eventually getting back to being in shape. I would want to try rock climbing - it's something that will probably happen this year.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?

I heard about the first guy - Free Solo. I know that there is a documentary about him but I haven't watched it. It is quite amazing to be able to climb that way.

2. What do you think about the short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you like it?

Personally, I don't like it. I would rather watch a regular movie because in my opinion there is a lot beauty in camera work.

3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?

I used to take long walks in the mountains but that is not my favourite thing to do. Climbing seems more extreme to me. It looks fun but I think that you need a lot of experience to do some amazing stuff, it is not for everyone.
Its nice to hear that we have another cilmber over here :) I really recomend see a little more about Alex, he become a legend in climbing world. And its also nice to hear that you like the 360 videos. I also considere it the better way to be able to look around and see every detail.
Hes style of climbing is unique. There is no other one like him in the world so far. And if you prefer to look around in real life go for it! And another climber :D Maybe school should make climbing as PE lessons.
Its for sure dangerous and considering it stupid is something i totaly can understand, but also if his girlfriend accept it in any way thats their choice.
I didnt even think about recording all sports in 360 degrees :O It would be so fun to watch.
There are both of us looking forward to climb in the mountain ;)
The words about fulfilling passion are greate! I couldnt better describe it.
It is simething extraordinary. I couldnt imagine climbing that route and even more without a rope.
Alex Honnold style is for few people in the world. But climbing with a rope and mountains is something greate enought for us, normal people :p
In one of the interviews with him he said that he is feeling fear but in the way that helps him to keep his body active not his brain busy.
Shrek i look down! :)
Thats sure a risk we take doing that. But dont we take a risk walking out of home everyday ;)
Its nice to hear that you liked the video and the story of alex :)
I think exactly the same. There is a big problem with 360 videos because they are recorded without much purpose. They just recorded and played. There is no thinking about using them in a good way.
Climbing indors are not that bad too :) Nice to hear that you liked it.
1. Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?
Heard about solo climbing from "Mission impossible" when Tom Cruise was climbing the mountain ( anyway he climbs in every movie maybe he likes it). I never heard about Alex Honnold.
2. What do you think about the short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you like it?
Its not interesting for me. I' d rather watched a movie with Tom Cruise where he is climbing to stratosphere :)
3. Do you like or would like to try climbing?
When i was a child i trained to climb in special room where i got my leg broken after accident, since i dont use to climb anymore.
1.       Did you heard about Free solo or Alex Honnold before? What do you think about him?

I have heard about Free solo, but I havent heard about Alex Honnold before. I think that he must be an adrenaline junkie, and I have mad respect for what he does, I could never do that.

2.       What do you think about short documentary in 360 degrees? Did you liked it?

I don't really like 360 degrees videos to be honest. They make me confused and I want to see everything at once ;P Maybe if i had some VR googles it would feel more natural.

3.       Do you like or would like to try climbing?

I like climbing but I wouldn't like to try free solo, I don't trust myself to do that. I would be horrified if anything wouldn't go as I planned.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
