Skiing in Turkey
This year I decided to go skiing in a completely new, quite exotic direction to Turkey. When I told my friends about it, I heard the question "wait, wait what? Are there mountains in Turkey?" And there they are, I've never seen them. I have always associated Turkey with beaches, desert and summer, but I decided to break this stereotype.
At the end of February, I started the journey. Destination: central part of Turkey - Cappadocia, city of Kayseri - Erycies Ski station.
I will start with the most important thing, below you can see this mountain. And basically it is not a mountain, but an extinct volcano - Erycies Dagi that rises above 3900 meters. From a nearby town the mountain looks impressive. The Turks are also impressive. This region is not located in European part of Turkey, Kayseri is a city located away from Ankara or Istanbul - a true Turkish city. A city where carpets are more expensive than gold.

The streets are dominated by bazaars, and a lot of "open" restaurants with fresh meat, fish and kebabs. Cafes with water pipes, teas. After all, that the city is not new, it is very clean. There is a special service that cleans the sidewalks using special vacuum cleaners.
What surprised me was the huge differences in society. In addition to the elderly, traditional Muslims who pray, stay away from strangers. I watched young people who are practically like us. The same goes for women. Islam, very strongly determines clothing and appearance - what a woman should look like. What was my surprise when it turned out that the Turks were walking dressed like ordinary Europeans. Young Turks remained very polite, helpful and accommodating. I had no problem talking to the elders. The only thing I understood is that they do not respect their president Recep Erdogan, but they adore Vladimir Putin.
Turning to skiing in Turkey, it is quite an interesting "phenomenon". You can see that the Turks are learning winter sports. They looks strange and quite funny. Sometimes they have problems with passing through the gates, getting on the lift, fastening the skis, stopping. Things that for experienced skiers is a complete foundation.
However, what surprised me completely was the Turkish mountains. When I reached the top of the volcano, the view was breathtaking - I saw snow-capped mountains everywhere. Turkey has huge potential. If they start investing in winter resorts, they will easily overcome European resorts - and they, and not the Alps, will be the destination of winter expeditions of Europeans. Weather, slopes, views, food everything was great. As a minus I have to include a fairly poor organization of the ski resort. People responsible for the operation of the ski lifts were able to turn off any ski lift without giving any reason. I learned that the decision on the operation of these statements on a given day is decided by the Turkish government. Amazing centralization of power.
In the face of a poor winter in Poland, Turkey made me really feel it. I recommend trying this direction for every skier, I will definitely go back there myself.

I tried both and I stopped doing both. I hate winter and I broke arm in both sports. The best place i was skiing was Italy. Livigno was my favourite place to be.

I visited it while beeing a child. Personally I wouldn't like to visit this country if I had an opportunity. Not because I don't like it but I would like to see other places. I associate this country mostly with specific music type and of course kebab.

Yes, Greece. Last year I spent there one month working on a surf center and I saw how crisis destroyed this country. Prices are high, people seems to be rude and it's not as beautifull as it was few years ago.
2. Yes, I visited Turkey twice. It is a very cool country. People are quite nice and they are used to tourists. I also love the way how they trade and how they want to negotiate the prices!
3. There was no such country, but I have to admit I am not a person who travels a lot.

Answering your questions:
1. I really love skiing! I have never ridden a snowboard, but it seems to be difficult. Maybe someday I'll try.
So far, my favorite place is Wisła (a city in Poland, near Zakopane). There are some great ski lifts and great ski routes. And the most I'd like to go to the French or Italian Alps. Maybe next year if I get lucky ;)
2. No, I have never been to Turkey, but one day I would like to visit. What associations do I have with Turkey? With kebabs, because I like kebabs very much, besides they come from Turkey. I also heard that apparently the Turks are very friendly and kind to tourists. I wonder if this is true, hmm..
3. I don't think that visiting a country has changed my view of that country. Maybe because I travel a little because I don't have time.
2. Yes, I have. I think Turkey is really underrated country - both people and views are amazing. To be honest I've always prefered to visit more "western" countires when choosing holiday destination, but I'm really glad I've finally dedicided to give Turkey a try. In the theme of mountains - during that trip I had a chance to be on top of Tahtali mountain, and even though I was in the summer the views were breathtaking. Turks seem to be really kind and helpful people and they have indeed a remarkable gift for persuasion...
3. As I said before, Turkey exceeded my expectations. But when it comes to dissapointment I would say Paris.
2. Yes, I have been to Turkey many times but always during the holidays. I always associated Turkey with beautiful weather and kebabs. You surprised me with this story of Kayseri.
3. No, not really. I think that most of the stereotypes that exist match the countries which are associated with it. During my travels I didn't have any big changes in the attitude towards the natives.
Unfortunately cannot recommend any place since I never did any winter sports myself. I'd love to try them out in the future though.

Never been in Turkey, but have heard good things about that country. The capital is quite astounding, and the various landscapes throughout the country are interesting.
I'd like to visit sometime the Polish villege in Istanbul, and try the great local cusine in an authentic place.

That's a hard question! I always try to do some research before visiting a foreign country, so I was did experience a cultural shock, maybe it would be more common outside of Europe which I sadly didn't had a chance to leave for vacation. Maybe Finland, because I always thought of it as a boring country, but it turned out to be really beautiful at midnight sun.
2. I have visited Turkey in the past and all I heard is that I can be kidnapped at every moment so I should be close to my parents. So I guess this is what comes to my mind instantly after thinking about Turkey.
3. Not really, but I don't travel a lot right now and I don't have any opinion about specific countries and places unless I visit them myself.
Unfortunately i didnt have oportunity to try it by myself. Every time when i was ready to do this there was some unexpected situations and i couldnt go there. However i am sure i will do it on the next year. I am going to Switzerland and i hope it will be awesome experience.

I have never been there before. I think all of the people heard about this country and they obviously connect it with kebab.

I don't think so. At least i dont have any example in my mind.
I've never ski or snowboarded. And I guess I won't start because it's quite a big cost to start doing a test sport. As I counted soboe, for the purchase of used equipment and clothes it costs about 3000. In addition, the mountains are far away, you can only ride in the winter plus ski passes to the slope then you have to buy. I don't see any sense in practicing this sport, but that's my opinion only.
I've been going to Turkey for 10 years and it always feels good there.Very nice people, no matter what hotel you stay in.I recommend trips to Turkey, e.g. Pamukale.Or such crazy trips to the mountains with open jeeps.Riding on rocks gives a lot of adrenaline.And besides, you can see real life.There are also a lot of monuments from ancient times.It's worth seeing them.
I was on business in India. I had a bad attitude but as it turned out it was worse than I thought. Delhi, Calcutta - a little further from the center - the biggest dirt and stench I've seen (seeing animals living there, a man immediately becomes a vegetarian). I think it's always worthwhile to go there by yourself and see for yourself (of course, to go there with full awareness of the realities, and not to set yourself in an idyllic atmosphere)

3) Yeah. When I visited United States, I thought that everybody is much richer than average family in Europe, but I saw that that is not the case. There are many homeless people going around and average people struggle to make theirs ends meet.
No, I haven't, because it never snows in my city, it also doesn't snow in cities within 500 miles of my city, so I never had any chance to ski, but I want to try it so much, I don't know where I should try it first, I think it will be some city in Poland.

No, I haven't visited Turkey yet, but I plan to visit it in future when I will have more free time. So far my association with Turkey is about my friends in PJATK, and then it is kebab, since most of the Turkey friends had ever brought me to eat authentic kebab.

Yes, I thought Japan was an ordinary country, but after I visited it last year, now I think it is a country from 2050s, especially the cities Tokyo and Osaka, I can travel a different place in Tokyo everyday for a year and there will be still a lot unknown places to travel, I wish I could live there for a while in future, unfortunately I don't speak Japanese and most Japanese don't speak English well. Besides, I think New York will also bring me such a shock, but I don't have chance to visit it so far.
Yes, once I tried skiing. This was a few years ago at a ski resort in Bukovel. But to be honest, I didn’t like it, because I am not a fan of extreme sports and I was very afraid of skiing. Therefore, I tried to spend more time on skates or in the sauna.

Although this is a very popular and fairly budget tourist country, unfortunately, I have never been to Turkey. But I`ve read and watched a lot of travel vlogs about this country. The first associations that come to my mind when I think of Turkey are tea, baklava, and Turkish delight.

Yes, probably it is Azerbaijan. I first visited the capital, Baku, two years ago just to see the distant relatives who live there. I did not expect anything from this trip, it seemed to me that I would not see any special places, but I was mistaken. The city is incredibly beautiful, noisy bazaars in the old city harmoniously combined with futuristic skyscrapers.
2. I have not yet, but I plan to go there. I can’t think of anything especially, only things that comes to my mind are politics over there.
3. Last summer I’ve been to Georgia and I must say that I wasn’t aware of how poor this country is. People over there were very friendly. And if you go there to visit cities there is nothing special to see, go visit nature it is beautiful over there.

Turkey - Big Cyc song with the content "turkish lurks around every corner, it will sell you everything, not your skin". Bazaar, leather, sheepskin and haggling for every dollar. Turkish marketplace!

Yes, United States of Mexico. After a stay of almost two weeks, I understood what the statement "but Mexico" means. This in a few words can not be told, but memories wonderful for the rest of your life. If I have the opportunity I will go there 100% again. Mexico is a beautiful country.
1. I ski every year since I turned seven. It's the only sport I love and do. The most interesting place where I went for skiing is definitely Livigno - it's a small Italian village in a valley between mountains which is completely cut off from the rest of the world. Only one long tunel connects it with the outside world. There's just something magical about being there... And it would be even more magical if less Polish people went there for winter holidays.
2. I visited Turkey only once in my life and that was... How many years ago? Ten or eleven? Or maybe more? I was a kid back then but I remember the food in the hotel being amazingly good and that my dad had to negotiate prices for literally anything whenever we went out to the city to buy something. I associate that country with amazing views, mind blowing history and Ajran (I love it by the way).
3. Nope, I never had any situation like that before. However, I am a big fan of travels and I always have huge respect to any country I visit. I always do some research on it's culture and food that I need to try.
Yes, I've done both since I was 10 years old. For me, the best place to ski is Andorra. It's great for both beginners and professionals. There are many restaurants and even iglo clubs in the mountains. Many great hotels, there are also charming cities to see and places to shop

Yes, a few years ago. I really like this place, especially for really cheap but great seaside trips. For me, turkey is associated with sisha and great tea

In the United States, everyone in Poland spoke unbelievably about this country, and when I was there several times on vacation, I really missed European standards for many things.
2. Before going skiing, I have been in Turkey as a kid in the warmer shorelines. I don't remember much, but what stuck to my mind was Pamukkale, the white terraces, that, back then, weren't even fanced, so we walked right on them. It was an amazing experience.
3. Germany did that to me. I always thought that it is very strict, no fun place, but when I got to Dusseldorf in west Germany, my views changed. People were cheerful, nice and caring. There was this young man that got tripped on a bike, more than 10 people gathered in a second, helping him to get up. Nobody screamed at him that you cannot bike there or what was he thinking, no. Everybody was just relieved that he was ok. I was amazed by it, it would be great if everybody were like this...
2. Yes I was there 10 years ago. I really like hotels in Turkey, they are cheap, but they have very high standard. The sea is clear and people are nice.
3. I think Hungary is the place that suprised me. When I was in Budapest everything was great there including food, shops, people and it was very nice there, i didn't know it's such a magical place.

I go on skiing or snowboarding every year for past 12 years (or maybe even more!) years now. Once I discovered Alps I never came back to Polish mountains. Currently my snowboarding spot of choice is Laax, in Switzerland. I should've been there about 2 weeks ago, but since coronavirus outbreak I had to to cancel the trip :(

I've never been to Turkey but snowy mountains it's the last thing that comes to my mind when I think of Turkey :)

I have tried skiing for the first time when I was about thirteen or fourteen years old and it didn't go very well to be honest. It went so bad that I gave up trying for about nine years but this February I tried it once again with my girlfriend at this time it went pretty great. I am beginning to really enjoy skiing and next time I will try my chances somewhere more demanding than Zakopane.

I have been there once while I was in a school exchange program. We stayed at a very big and wealthy school which made us feel like we are from a third world country. Few things about Turkey stuck in my head. When it comes to food. for example, their dishes have a very strong taste. When something is supposed to be sweet - it is sweet as it can be. When something is supposed to be spicy - it is hard for a typical european to handle such spice.

When I was in Portugal I got to know that country well enough to change my perspective on some things. For example I fought that Portugal is not very different from Spain and the only thing that makes them different from each other is the fact that Portugal is poorer. It turns out that it is not that way. The biggest difference in those countries is how different people are from each other. Especially when it comes to their language skills. Spanish people barely can speak english but people from Portugal mostly have flawless skills of speaking english. Really, that was very impresive.

I have never visited Turkey. I associate this country with many things eg. mosques or ruins of ancient cities. In Turkey women clothes are specific. Also I associate this country with kebab. I like this food.

No, there isn’t any country. I don’t have traveled to many countries yet. When I was kid I traveled to Germany to visit my aunt. I was shocked because there weren’t any graffiti on the city walls. In Poland I saw many of them. I was thinking that in Germany also are many graffiti painted on the walls. My aunt told me that in Berlin I can find them.
2. No, i have not. I usually associate turkey with beautiful Ottoman architecture, and with their local cuisine, like kebab, which is very different from what we have here in europe.
3. No, sorry. For my whole life i have never been abroad, so i can't really answer the question.
2.Unfortunately, I've never been to Turkey. However, I will honestly say that when I saw the title of this material I was surprised. This country has always been associated with summer trips to the beach and also with food such as kebabs, certainly not with winter sports.
3.I don't think I had such a situation. Whenever I choose the direction of travel, I follow what interests me. Sometimes the places where I was, gently disappointed me, or on the contrary, were breathtaking.
I am a fan of snowboarding and I try to go for a snowboarding trip at least once every year. For years I used to go to the Polish mountains with friends, but in the last couple of years I have visited the north of Italy twice and this year I have been to Austria for the first time. Between those, I much prefer the Italian Alps, as the slopes are high and the weather was always perfect - the sun was shining but the snow remained dry and crisp so it was easy to ride. The views are not bad either!
2. Have you ever visited Turkey? What do you associate this country with?
Yes, I have been to Turkey two or three times when I was a child, but I cannot remember the exact cities. It was an all-inclusive type of vacation with my family so there was not much sightseeing involved, we basically just stayed in the resort and enjoyed the beach. When thinking about Turkey, the first thing that comes to my mind is good food: fragnant spices and overly sweet desserts - I enjoy that type of food and sometimes I visit Turkish restaurants here in Warsaw.

This summer I have visited Macedonia. It was a very spontaneous choice and we decided on it primarily due to the cheap flights. We flew to Skopje and stayed there for 3 days visiting the city and its surroundings. It is hard to compare that city to any other European capital - it is full of contradictions and surprises. The city center is very spacious but also dotted with enormous and majestic buildings, all very incoherent in their architectural style. Also, I was pleseantly surprised by the Macedonian food - I enjoyed the grilled meat dishes and rich stews.
2. I haven't been in Turkey and I am not planning that for now, but who knows, maybe one day i will visit this country. I associate this country mostly with kebab and baklava.
3. No, i was in many countries but none of them has changed my point of view about them. On the other hand, each of them was in Europe so there was no suprises. Im planning to visit Asia so maybe that could change my perspective
Yes I ski rather than snowboarding. I just have not tried a snowboard. I enjoy skiing and I have no aspirations to change that. I skiied only in Poland but I would like to visit some other great mountains like in Italy or Austria. I've heard that in those places the routes are beautiful.

I have never been to Turkey. And the first thing that comes to my mind, when I start to thing of Turkey is the kebap. I really enjoy once in a while eating some good kebap. I think that most of people in our country would say the same about first thing that comes to your mind about Turkey.

No, I cannot think of any country that has broken the thing in my mind. I visited a few and my expectations did not fail.
2. No, I didn't and I don't plan to. Of course I associate this country with kebap. Thinking about something more tha this, I think about awfully sweet sweets like baklava. To be honest I tried some typical for turkish cusine desserts and all of them taste similar.
3. To be honest Italy. I used to have Italy on my dream destinations list, but then I visited some places there and my opinion changed. Maybe I had bad luck, but I reaaly didn't enjoy that trip and I'd never come back there again.
Yes I have. The place where I was the most satisfied with the infrastructure, the overall state of the ski slopes and variety of difficulty of these was definitely Italy. I haven’t been to France yet for skiing but I am planning to do that very soon.

I have been to Turkey once as a child. I think that mostly I associate it with food and very characteristic spices.

I don’t think so. I tend to be open and gather information about the country rather than being prejudiced when I go somewhere abroad for vacation.
2. No. I'm also not planning to. Not a fan of this culture group. About latter part of question, nowadays mostly Erdogan and illegal immigrants in Europe. So in short one of many 'diseases of Europe'.
3. Not really, I'm not a travelling type of person though and rather avoid sightseeing.
2.I've never been to Turkey but first thing that comes to mind about that country is Cappadocia. It's a beautiful historic part of Turkey famous for hot air baloon flights, that fly over the desert scenery. Usually there are hundreds of them in the sky and it looks pretty fantastic. I would like to see it someday.
3.I used to think Italy was dirty, hectic and pretty touristy. But I've been there a few times now and it turned out to be completely different. Italians don't really care about clean surroundings because they are used to a slow life and they prioritize different things. There are also places in Italy that haven't been seen by that many tourists. I visited a little town in Sicily in the summer, where I saw only two other people that were visiting! But usually I go places to experience them just how they are.
2. I have never visited Turkey before. I've always admired the design of the carpets and their respectful approach to them.
3. So far I have mostly been travelling to the South Europe countries. Till now I have been there so many times that I cannot quite remember what was my first impression on them. I plan to visit countries I haven't seen yet soon.
Yes, I used to do it. But I have had a bad accident and I have problems with my knee, but in the next season I would try it. I prefer to ski rather than snowboarding, but maybe thats because I stared to ski when I was a little kid, and I did snowboarding only a week. I would like to go visit Alpes and check it.

Yes, I was there once, and I would not like to come there again. In my opinion there are a lot of interesting places to see, and Turkey is not one of ma favorite.

Yes, The China was one of this. I was thinking that China is a place where people are not kind and is is just opposite. Moreover it is such an interesting place to visit. I would recommend everyone to visit it!
I've never visited Turkey and I didn't consider to visit it in a near future because of dangerous situations taking place there. Anyway, I associate it with kebab and a beautiful, rich, magnificent hotels.
I was not in so much places abroad, but in the places I've been I didn't encountered anything that could change my previous thinking of that country or place. But I've never been in any exotic country so maybe all of it is ahead of me.

No, I have never visited Turkey. If I must associate this country with something it would be with tea and Turkish baths and maybe recently with soap operas lately there are a lot of them on television.

Nope, there is no such country that has broken my thinking about it. Unfortunately, I don't travel much, especially on trips that change my perception of the world.
2. No, I have never been to Turkey, but I really want to visit her. Turkey seems to me a very colorful country, I saw a lot of pictures of colorful cities. A country of delicious food, the worst traditions and history.
3. I can say this not about the country but about the mountains, when I first conquer a peak 3.5 km high and spent 6 hours on it. The result was worth it, because in the end you see the beauty not touched by man. I never thought that I would love it.
2. I was in Turkey when I was three or four year old so i don't remember it perfectly. I resemble Turkey with great food - especially meet, not only kebab ;) Also when I think or hear about Turkey it is about Erdogan and his dictatorship :/
3. No but i have many more countries to visit. I think that the countries that may surprised you the most are the ones from other culture
I was skiing only in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, so it wasn't some kind of a great route.
2. I've been to Turkey a few times, but on all inclusive holidays with lots of sunbathing and swimming in the pool. I heard from a friend about the possibility of going skiing in Turkey, so I will probably try it sometime.
3. Yes, I completely changed my mind about the place when I flew to Mauritius. This was because I expected a very developed island with lots of holiday resorts, but the island turned out to be wild with big fields of sugar cane and jungle, with unlit roads and cars blowing up with loss.
2. No, I haven’t been to Turkey. That’s country with fantastic culture and architecture. I’m going to visit it in the nearest future.
3. United Arab Emirates – that a good example with a strong social stratification, along with wealth and misery living next to each other.
Yeeeeees. I was so happy to see this post today, as I am a skiing lover! I was skiing for 7 years and started when I was 10. Now I am snowboarding during each winter (unfortunately only in Poland and Slovakia) for 6-7 years but I'd love to go to Alps, maybe next year!

I've been to Turkey once for 2 weeks. Mostly I stayed in Istanbul and I think the most interesting about their country is the religion, so I could discover something totally different. Also when it comes to architecture is special in comparison to that we have in Europe. More colorful and with much more details everywhere.

No, Actually no. There are a lot of places I want to visit, so probably it ill come to me, hopefully soon.
I go skiing every winter. I plan to learn how to snowboard. I have never visited a very interesting place for skiing and I don't plan to visit any interesting place in the near future.
I was once in Turkey. It was a vacation break a few years ago. I associate turkey with bazaars, warmth, sea and great atmosphere, but I was in a hotel, so surely my feelings are typical feelings from holidays and not from you. I think only bazaars and bargaining are associated with turkey.
Croatia the first time I was there completely surprised me and changed my opinion about this place and abroad. Until now, I like to go there on holiday, but recently I have not had such an opportunity :(

2. Yes, I have visited it few years ago with my parents during the summer. I mainly associate it with hot weather and very dangerous drivers. I saw multiple car accidents on the roads, while in Poland it never happened to me.
3. I don't think a country like this exists in my case. I tend not to be very stereotypical when thinking about something. Only countries I visited were Turkey and Greece, and they met with my expectations. This summer I'm planning on going to Slovakia, so I'll see if it is a different case there.

I’ve never been in Turkey. I associate this country with Istambul, nice beaches and cheap ‘all inclusive’ travels.

I love skiing! I am a ski instructor and worked in Karpacz and Małe Ciche. I try to go at least once a year for a week.
I haven't been anywhere exotic though, but I would love to go to Turkey, you convinced me. :) Other places I have in mind, is Andorra, Georgia a New Zeland.

I haven't but I met some Turkish people on my Erasmus time. I associate this country with Erdogan, Kebab, and Islam mostly, sadly. :(

I ski since I was 6, but now I prefer snowboarding since I tried it for the first time 3 years ago. I don't know if any of them were particularly interesting, but I really like snowboarding in Italian Alps.

I have never been to Turkey, to be honest, I haven't ever heard about anyone going skiing to Turkey. I mostly associate this country with holiday destinations and bazaars.

I don't think so, I haven't ever changed completely my opinion about anything, I try to be open and to not have any prejudices, of course, I have some but not as much to have to completely change my opinion about something.
