Week 3 [16.03-22.03.2020] My history of board games

My history of board games

From early ages of my life I was told to not spend so much time on a computer. I was fascinated with games on a computer but because I was spending so much time on it I was grounded many times and couldn't access a computer for long periods of time. To brighten my free time I was going to play basketball or go riding on bicycles around the block, but when it was pouring outside we had nothing much to do. Me along with my friends started to explore the world of board games, and we instantly loved it.

Figure 1. Monopoly - boardgame

We started with some basics that I guess we all know from the time we were young. Monopoly is a real estate game where you try to build your empire buying new estates and make others pay you big money when they step on your fields. This game is a really simple one but it opened my mind on board games. For a first time I saw that this games can be competitive and interesting even though you only have a piece of cardboard and some pawns and cards.
After this one me and my friends wanted something new. A simple game that could allow us to have loose talks and relax from hard day at school at the time. We started playing Splendor, game created by Marc Andre.

Figure 2. Splendor - boardgame

The game was really simple one, you were a trader that is investing in mines of beautiful stones that were very precious at a time. You could get only 2 of them at you turn but making a good decisions you could quickly buy yourself a mines or invest in some estates that would make your fortune bigger. The person who had most points at the end wins. As you can see the game is easy but really satisfying when you plan something perfectly. I'm not trying to present whole game rules but only few informations that could interest u a little.
When I was in highschool me and my friends were really addicted from computer game called world of warcraft. We tried to find something similar in board games and we came across Talisman: Magic and sword board game that had beautiful graphics but was based on dice rolling so it got bored really quicky.

Figure 3. Talisman: magic and sword

After this one we came across a board game called Chaos in the old world. I instantly loved this game. It had beautiful graphics, monsters, amazing history that takes place in Warhammer 40 000 world.

Figure 4. Chaos in the old world

The board game is huge in size, so you need a little bit of space to fit all of the cards and things that are necessary. In this game we are playing one of 4 gods of fight for power. Khorne, God of the Blood and Lord of Skulls, he is eager for murder and constant destruction. Nurgel, Lord of the Plague in font of filth and sickness. Tzeentch, Lord of Fate and Great Intrigue is a master of lies and deceit. Slaanesh, a Prince of Pain and Delight and Lord of Desire, lurges everyone with promises of all carnal pleasures. I personally played mostly as Tzeentch because he was the most demanding one and I kinda liked it.

Figure 5. Tzeentch

In the game Chaos in the Old World, each player will play the role of one of the Lords of Chaos. The destructive abilities and armies of each of the gods will give the player unique ways to sow destruction and control the Old World. Each god wants to destroy the world in their own perfect way, one by plague, other by total destruction and war and so on. As all of the gods ruin people’s lands and wreaking havoc in them, the Old World does not give up. People mobilize and fight back with the gods to survive and banish them by the hands of faithful heroes. It is the first game that I saw a situation that every player could loose and the world will survive the gods. The game is quite long because it is about 1 to 2 hours of play time.
As the games go on we are upgrading our abilities and place our troops in the old world that gives us complete different gameplay.

I don’t want to spoil this game for the ones that will want to try it themselves. It is hard to get because companies stopped the productions about 2 years ago so the price on this game still goes up. Right now the classic game costs about 400 PLN, and the expansion The Horned Rat costs about 450 – 600 PLN which is insane amount for a board game, so just think for a second how good it must be if people still buy it from others even though it costs that much.

There are few other games that I haven’t played yet but I really want to try them some day. The first one is called Nemesis where you are playing cooperatively with your friends and try to escape from a ship attacked by an alien. It has cool mechanizms like a noise tokens that are placed based on how much noise you make while moving. When you make too much noise in a room the alien will come and attack you. You can get infected, wounded or be a vector of larvae which is slowly killing you if u won’t get a cure that is in special wing on the ship. Game was recommended to me by many people that played many more games that I did and that’s why I decided to share it with you.
Figure 6. Nemesis -boardgame
Another game worth sharing is called Scythe. The game is about 5 fractions that want to control a town-country called “Factory” that was a force behind the war thanks to the mosses it producted. Scythe is a strategic game for one to five players in which you will play the leader of one of the nations of Eastern Europe in an alternative reality of the 1920s. You will explore and conquer more territories. You will recruit new recruits and collect resources that will make your economy stronger and give u an option to create mechs, big machines capable of transporting people and resources along with destructive force on your enemies that will try to conquer your land. Scythe is a game that perfectly combines the mechanics known from Eurogames with a very atmospheric gameplay. It will delight players who like development, optimization and strategic planning, along with those who appreciate a lear storyline, adventure elements, beautiful graphics (created by Polish artist Jakub Różalski), linking the rules of the game to the theme and limiting negative interactions.

Figure 8. Scythe - boardgame

This presentation was created because I wanted to show the world of board games to those who most likely will never try it themselves. I think it will bring your thoughts and open your mind on all the worlds that board games can present to you.

I think it’s time for me to try Dungeons and Dragons, role-playing game that I hear so much about from my friends. It is always interesting to try something new from time to time. Now I leave you with this board game names and I hope you try at least one of them some time.

Thank you for reading my presentation, I hope you like it at least a little bit. Let me know in the comments what you think about it.

Questions:

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

Comments

1. Of course, I used to play a lot of Monopoly. Now I don't have time for this and I also like games in which more depends on the player's creativity than on fate. I like playing logic games as well as Scrabble, where you have to use your own intelligence and creativity.

2. They used to pay attention to this when I was younger. Now I work as a developer, so looking at the screen is part of my job. I have no choice.

3. Under the influence of your text, I read the reviews of Chaos in the Old World. I must admit it sounds very interesting, it looks the same. I think that one day I will definitely try to play it.

4. I think everyone has a different opinion. I like the Chaos in the Old World graphic the most. Although I'm not an expert when it comes to graphics :)
1. I have played only monopoly, a long time ago with family. I liked it, it was very simple, but fun to play. I am totally not a “board game” kind of person. I have never played any of those sophisticated board games. Computer games were always all I needed to entertain myself – mostly single player, so a totally opposite direction than board games.

2. Yes, of course! It was probably one of the most annoying part of the childhood. The arguments parents use are usually not correct. There is nothing wrong in computer games at all, in my humble opinion. There is just an overall opinion that those games are evil and most of parents don’t even think about it. You can destroy the vision, or spine by reading books too. And there is also hypocrisy – computer is evil, but whole day in front of a TV is fine.

3. I can only base on your description according to which, it seems to be quite interesting game, but as I said, I don’t play such games and I am totally unfamiliar with this category of products. I can’t form my opinion because of that.

4. I like the picture of Jakub Różalski which you posted.

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

I have only played monopoly, but I played various editions of it. I spent vast amount of time on playing monopoly games although, one may think that It takes ages and a lot of nerves to finnish it. Apparently I have always had a capitalist spirit :).

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

There was a time in primary school and junior highschool when I spent too much time on video games and they got angry at me many times then. I can't blame them, they were totally right.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I can not really give my opinion without playing it, but at first glance it seems interesting.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

I am sorry but for me it is monopoly. Nothing can beat the nostalgy and simplicity of it.

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

I played Monopoly and I have to admit that it's really easy and it gets boring after an hour. Others seem to be more advanced. I think playing Nemesis would be exciting.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

No, because they had no reason. I always preferred spending time outside to sitting in front of a computer.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I believe that it gives so much joy if it costs so much. I think it doesn't last that long (I remember playing Monopoly for much longer than 2 hours). I like the game theme: Old World, destruction and people fighting gods. If I had the opportunity to play it - I would not hesitate.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

In my opinion, graphics are not so important. If the topic and the rules are interesting, people enjoy the game. On the other hand, if the game is boring, even amazing graphics will not help. However, looking at the above pictures, I would point to Nemesis - it looks completely different from the others.

1. I played only Monopoly in the games listed above. When I was little I liked this game, but currently I don't want to play it. It's boring and game time is too long for me. I prefer to play words game like Scrabble or Taboo.

2. They hadn’t any chance to be angry. When I was a child I didn't play computer games, because I didn't like them. I preferred to spend my free time actively outside or playing instruments.

3. It promises to be interesting, I like to try new things but I would have to play it to be able to express my opinion.

4. I don't pay attention to game graphics, if the game is really good, it's enough to have a little imagination and the graphics will appear in front of our eyes in three-dimensions. Because of this, my favorite is Monopoly - this game allows me to imagine everything.

1. I have played Monopoly (Eurobiznes also) and it is the only position I have played from your list. Myself I own ~15 different board games and sometimes I play them with my firends, but as time passes it happens less often. In my opinion it is hard to find people that are really into board games and are willing to spend few hours learning how to play and playing it. I myself love Scrabble and game called 'Osadnicy'.

2. Not nessesarily, I think I was able to maintain this secret golden-ration between studying for school, reading books, spending time outside and playing video games :)

3. Seems like it should be fun to play, but also like it is complicated. Still i can not share with you my opinion as I have not touched that game.

4. Definitely Scythe

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
Yes, for example, I always liked to play Monopoly with my family when I was young, after I had gotten a computer, I even played it in PC.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
To be honest, I didn't spend too much time on my computer when I was young, I preferred to having fun with my cousins, I started to play computer games only since I was in middle school, also I didn't play that much, so my parents were not angry at me.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I am not that much into complicated board games, I only enjoy playing some board games easy like Monopoly, if it is difficult, then I will prefer to play online games, and Chaos in the old world seems kind of difficult, I am not so sure, correct me if I am wrong, at least I have this feeling by looking at the picture in your presentation.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
I would say Nemesis has the most beautiful graphics, anyway, in my opinion I don't care graphics that much for board games, I will like it as long as it has a interesting topic and joyful rules, or I will feel bored no matter how beautiful its graphics looks like.

1.
I did play Monopoly and Splendor and have enjoyed both of them. The great thing in Monopoly is that an average game duration is really long. I don't like the random factor though. I like splenodor because it was strategic and required some thought while playing.

2.
I was always the 'computer specialist' and often I did something interesting on the computer or helped them with a problem, so they didn't mind.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
It's okay, seems quite complex to play, but I don't like fantasy settings in games

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
Monopoly, I like the minimalism and simplicity of it. Scythe is also worthy of a mention, it has graphics similiar to the style of Stålenhag
Interesting presentation. Answering your questions:

1. Unfortunately, I didn't play all the games you mentioned. I only know Monopoly. This is a really great board game that requires logical thinking and good strategy. I think that the only downside of this game is monotonicity - you can form a certain pattern of actions that will lead to your victory.

2. Oh yes, definitely yes. When I was a child, I really enjoyed spending time in front of the computer playing various games - I just liked them very much. My parents were very frustrated at the time that such a young kid spends time playing games. All in all, I'm not surprised and I even understand their concern for me.

3. Quite a difficult description, it seems to me that it is more a game for advanced players. A big plus is fantasy, which I like as much.

4. It's hard to say. In board games I do not pay attention to graphics, because it does not make sense. What matters most to me is the atmosphere of the game itself and the pleasure of playing. I look at graphics in computer games.

Thank you for interesting presentation :)
1. Of the games you listed, I have only played Monopoly with my friends. I liked it, but I prefer more such board games like Munchkin and Game of Thrones (the rules are somewhat similar to Chaos in the Old World).

2. I hadn't spent too much time sitting in front of the computer and playing video games. So my parents didn't have to be angry at me for that. I usually spent my free time as a child, walking with friends or classmates.

3. I have never played this Chaos in the Old World. But from the description above I guess this is a worthy and interesting board game. I really like entangled, tricky and long games.

4. You have mentioned about Warhammer 40 000. I think it is one of the most beautifull board games with its colorful field for the game, miniatures that you make and decorate yourself. I am going to play Warhammer soon and I can say that even the process of preparing for the game is already very exciting!

1. I've only played two games of the ones you've mentioned: Monopoly and Talisman. I'm not a big fan of Monopoly, but it can be quite fun, provided that the people you play with are not taking it too seriously and are willing to take risks.
Talisman is one of the favourite board games among me and my friends - it is always as exciting as it was the first time we've played it.

2. They had no reason to be angry at me, as I've never spent too much time playing computer games or using computer in general. Nowadays, staring into screen is an integral part of my life - due to field of study/job.

3. I've never heard of it, but I feel like I could really enjoy it, though the price of it is quite discouraging :D I'll definitely consider it next time I visit my favourite board games pub, if it's available there.

4. To me, what's most important in board games is the plot. But if I were to choose I'd go for Nemesis.

Thank you for your comment. I mostly like the game where you have to be creative to win and think about all the posibilities of other player moves.

I'm glad Chaos in the Old World intersted you. I know that it is hard to find time for board games but sometimes it can be really awesome to spend time this way with your close ones (especially in the time of pandemic ;) )
Bartosz Barnat said…
I recently started playing some single player games and I can recommend you Days Gone ;) I really like the history in it and the fact that it is taking place in apocalyptic world is giving a nice feel into the game.

I was always so annoyed with my parents saying that games make me anggressive and so on. I think they shaped who I am a little bit and I don't think there is anything wrong with me ;).
Bartosz Barnat said…
Oh yes, monopoly brings so many memories. But still I think the games that I listed as the last ones (Scythe, Chaos in the old world) are much better in my opinion.
Bartosz Barnat said…
In Chaos the games lasts something about 40 minutes if players are quick ;) I didn't like the fact in monopoly that if you were bad at the beginning you couldnt do much till the end of the game. In chaos and scythe you can always destroy your opponents by your creativity. I highly recommend you try it ;). If you don't want to buy it yourself it can be borrowed from a shop for a small price.
Bartosz Barnat said…
Thank you for your comment. I think graphics are not the most important thing in the game, for example Shodan is really interesting and it doesn't have a great graphics at all but to be honest its always nice to look at something beautiful when you are playing and try to imagin yourself in this world. Graphics help in that.
Bartosz Barnat said…
Oh yea I heard about Osadnicy and wanted to buy them when I was buying Chaos in the old world but it wasnt in the shop so I took chaos instead.

I agree that it's hard to find people willing to go through the basics to start playing the game. I guess that is the reason why digital board games are beeing created (like scythe, it's on steam). If you want to play some time just hook me up ;).
Bartosz Barnat said…
Well yea chaos in the old world is kinda complex game but after the first game it begins to be easier and much relaxing to play ;).
1. I did play Monopoly (who didn't?) and Splendor. I like both of these but I might have a bit different opinion on board games: I like relatively easy games because every time somebody visits me I would have to describe the rules again and again. It is hard to tell all the rules and people usually get bored. When the game is simple, we can start to play quickly and enjoy that.

2. They were not that much because I had to share it with my brother, but anyway their form of punishing me was to forbid me from using a computer. So good I preferred cycling!

3. I like the story of it. It makes way better climate than games like Monopoly and you feel that you are really in another world.

4. To be honest I did never pay attention to graphics in a game, but from the ones that you showed, Scythe is the best one.
Bartosz Barnat said…
Thank you for your comment. I started to learn something more about computers in the university. Earlier I only played video games and I kinda regret that.
Bartosz Barnat said…
For me no matter how boring the game is, if you are spending time with your close friends and you joke around, every board game is amazing. Thats why you have to choose carefully who you are playing with because if you are playing an amazing game with cool graphics and interesting background it can be all ruined by the one person who just doesnt feel it.
Bartosz Barnat said…
Thank you for your comment. Yea Warhammer 40 000 is amazing but it's much bigger scale than typical board games. I want to try it one day ( I mean the one with layouts created by people).
Bartosz Barnat said…
After your first sentence that the most important for you is plot I just knew you would choose Nemesis. It has great plot ;).
Bartosz Barnat said…
Thank you for your comment. I would choose Scythe too. It has the most increadible graphics in my opinion and every pawn is created with such precision too. I really like to just look at this board game when im playing and feel as I'm living inside this world.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
I played monolopy a lot. Others games I hadn't had a chance expect Talisman. Right now I am big fan of Talisman game.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
Yes, it was always a problem for them, as they couldnt't realised that maybe what I will be doing in a future will mostly be connected with sitting whole day near computer. Well these days I was playing games a lot rather learning cool things so I can't complain about it.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
Climate is amazing. The best thing I like in games is a story and how this story is telled.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
i think it would be World of warcraft because of the figures which I love in games.

1. Aside from Nemesis, which is on my 'want to play' list and Talisman, which simply isn't appealing to me at all, I played all of mentioned titles.

Monopoly, in my opinion is honestly a terrible game. It's bad in every possible aspect other than ease of play, which probably made game popular. But overall it's boring and dull. Actually when someone mentions to me that they like board games and Monopoly is their favorite, I'm always disappointed, but from what I see in most cases those people didn't have much contact with other board games.

Splendor is another simple game, very fast to learn, but game strategies are a bit limited. Although I don't like it too much, it's very solid game and something I could recommend as entrance board game for new people.

Talisman sits on my friend's shelf for years and for some reason we never played it, even when someone mentioned it. Can't really say too much about it, but I don't think dice rolling is what made it boring for your group. In my experience, dice rolling is what usually makes most people enjoy games even more, and is a reason for which I'm often stuck with same titles again, and again, and again. If you ever have occasion, I recommend Roll Player, which is practically a game about rolling dices and is one of those titles that I'm often forced to play because of this :).

3. Moving on to those more interesting titles - Chaos in the Old World is one of better board games, I had occasion to play, but has some drawbacks, which may make game experience much worse. First, it's a game for 3-4 (5 with expansion) players, but is actually really bad for 3. If you can't fill all 4 spots, I'd avoid playing it, because it scales poorly, if it even does at all. Another thing that can reject people is complexity. It's not a hard game if you know the rules, but those are a bit complicated, contain mistakes (thanks Fantasy Flight Games) and can be overwhelming at first, which makes us touch another problem. At least at first new players will probably struggle with it. Moreover quality of game components is mediocre if not worse. If it was still available in normal sale then there's no way people would pay so much money for it. In the end though, even if I consider it very overhyped, it's one of the games I wish I could play more often. It has long setup, but game itself plays fairly quick for its size, is well balanced (for 4 players), and bring a lot of joy especially for Warhammer fans.

1 continuation.
I love theme of Nemesis, even though I hate Sci-fi titles. Was even going to order it on KS when it launched, but for some dumb reason didn't. It looks amazing from board graphics to figurines, at least on pictures, because didn't have a chance to see or play it yet. Can't really say any more, because I don't remember too much about Nemesis, but if could, I'd play it for sure at least once.

1 & 4. Scythe is probably the best game you mentioned and also looks the best out of these. The latter is mostly thanks to Jakub contribution to the project. At first I was disappointed, because I hoped it will be more combat focused, yet combat is probably one of most meaningless parts and bring more harm than benefits. You won't see great battles with destuctive forces you mention, but rather a trench war, where you put a soldier to claim land, because attacking it will most likely be not worth it. On the contrary it's a typical Eurogame. Just bigger, better looking one and with astonishing quality of components and details. But it works and does it amazing. Graphics are probably bigger part of the success than theme and mechanics though.

2. Like most of people - yes. Thankfully my first notebook was a godsend gift, because I could keep it in my room and no one was complaining to me anymore. Well not that much :)

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
Yeah, I've played, and I even play a lot now. I love meeting with friends or family when we play board games. My favorite game is dixit. Dixit is a game with simple rules, but requires a lot of creativity. While players have good ideas, the game is interesting when they don't have them, it can be a bit boring. A game that develops the imagination. It allows the players who meet for the first time to get to know each other, as well as to learn something new about good friends. Colourful cards arouse interest and the rules allow each new game to be as fascinating as the first.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
My parents were angry when I spent a lot of time in front of the monitor. But they were born when computers and even TV sets were not used by anyone. They didn't understand that I had different needs from them.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
It's the first time I've met that term, I've got to go through with it.
4. The last computer game I played was a witch. I think it had very nice graphics. It was also very playable. Of board games, the most beautiful is dixit. I don't think graphics are the most important thing. I haven't heard of a poor game that was saved by super graphics yet, but I've heard of games with poor graphics that saved gameplay. Another issue is that the graphics in computer games have hardly changed at all recently. There is no revolution. DirectX12 was to guarantee a powerful revolution. It came out as usual. The promises are over.
Graphics cards offer powerful power. Very powerful. Gtx2080 is a real monster. 6 years ago, a typical avid player would have gotten spasms when he saw the charts of the possibilities of such a card. The market for graphics cards is already so wide that even the old generations of graphics cards are still efficient and this is how it should be.

1. Yes, I did play monopoly, and although I'm not a huge fan, i like to play it from time to time. Speaking of the games i haven't played, i would love to try Scythe, it looks amazing.

2. Yes, they were, especially when I was very young. They stopped when i grew older and became interested in programming.

3. I think it looks really fun, i love a concept of being a god that wants to annihilate the world, and i will definitely play it in the near future.

4. For me it would be Scythe. I just love this kind of aesthetic.
Hello, here are my replies to your questions!

1. I've only played "Talisman" out of all the games you mentioned and I've played the Steam version of it. And I liked it! I'm generally a big fan of board games and tabletop RPGs.

2. Yes, of course but that was back in the days when I was a kid. Nowadays I have an excuse of being a programmer so my parents don't mind it. :) I used to spend way too much time on games forums or while playing either League of Legends or Minecraft.

3. I like the overall idea of it and I'd gladly give it a go if it falls into my hands, We need more games where we can play as the "bad guys".

4. This one is an easy question - of course it's "Scythe". Jakub Różalski is an amazing artist and I've been a fan of his work for quite some time now. The overall aesthetic of Polish folklore mixed with terrifying steampunk machines is simply breathtaking.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
I played monolopy many times in my childhood, it was a great fun for the whole family. It was hard to finish this game in one day so playing with friends was harder.
I have never played any other board game.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
Yes, when i was in middle school my parents was afraid of my eyes healt, because after returning from the pitch I sat at the computer all evening, sometimes it lasted until 3am.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I like the idea of this game, I heard about similar computer game, if I remind myself, I will let you know and I think I will definitely try the board form of this game.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
I think that would be a Scythe, because I love that graphic made by Jakub Różalski before actual game photo and that's why I think I might like it.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

Honestly i don't play often board games. Obviously i heard about monopoly and i really enjoyed it when i was younger. Anyway its nice to play from time to time in something like that with friends and good beer. :)
Did you heard about munchkin zombie or bang ? This are games with cards. I can recommend it for you... :)

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Yes, there was some situations like that when i was younger. I regret time i spend in front of computer games because it was too much. Anyway i think it was really important to learn a lot of things and become who i am know.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I think Chaos is really interesting game. I didnt heard about it before but maybe i will have opportunity in future to play in it and check it by myself.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion ?

In my opinion graphics are not so important when the game is interesting and enjoyable but i think Nemesis was quite nice as you presented it above.

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
Before moving to Poland I used to play board games professionally. And yes, I have played all of them, many times. By the way, pm me if you are searching for people to join your comp, or looking for a party to join yourself, I am always up to round or two.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
They were.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
Awesome game, rather balanced and sandbox-y, in the meaning that there are more than one or two ways of winning, so you have to keep an eye out on opponents and their strategies.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
Scythe. Jakub Rosalski is a genius.

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
I've only played the most causal one - Monopoly and it's variations, but I want to try Scythe from quite some time. I've played different games however like Coup, Hero Realms, Stworze, Straszydła, Roll Player, Elementum, Exploding Cats, Bears vs Babies, La Cosa Nostra are the most recent ones :D.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
Yes, many times but it payed of in the long run.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
It sounds good though I never was a fan of W40k. I am on neutral ground if comes to this franchise, but the mechanic sounds good. In the past I watched some movies about it also.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
It's hard to compare graphics based on photos or movies in the internet but from the games I saw personally and/or played them I would go for X-COM, Stworze and Magic The Gathering.

Yes, I played Monopoly with my friends when I was a teenager. As we didn`t play computer games, we had to fill up our free time somehow, so we found a very interactive game, which required some brain activity. I think board games are the best choice as people do not get addicted, it engages several players, thus we can communicate with each other, I find it useful in this way.
I got my first computer when I was 11 y.o, quite late as you see, my friends were not really fans of staying at home and staring at the screen as well. I remember when I was 13 and there were social networking sites, which were so popular in Ukraine like VK, so only that time I could spend much time, however anyway I was the child who always went outside with the friends.

What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I find it interesting by the way you described it, may be I would like to play one day.

Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
I think it is Tzeentch (just my personal opinion:))
1. I love playing board games! From what you showed I know Splendor and like it very much, but it's just a short party game.

2. Not really. My father is a gamer and my mother liked to had us contained and not bothering her from time to time ;) But I also liked to actually go out and play so I haven't spent too much time staring at the screen.

3. I haven't played it, but thank you very much for the recommendation. It seems I have to save some money... again :D

4. Hard to say as they have many different styles. Currently, my favourite game is 7 wonders. The graphic design is, maybe, not the best but very decent and the gameplay is amazing, so if you haven't tried it I wholeheartedly recommend it!

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

Of course, I played these games and more. Board games before computer games were the only leisure time available. Still card games and of course chess, checkers or Chinese classics. These games gave a lot of joy and the opportunity to meet in a group of 4-5 people after lessons and fun. Today they are perceived as archaism and people who play it are said to be ancient. I personally try to play such games with my children. You can't spend whole days in front of a computer screen.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

My parents are bad? First you had to ask them for access to the TV. One at home, there were no monitors, especially laptops. When a man negotiated an hour or two he didn't know what to play, he was so happy. Were they bad they were not good because they let me play. My favorite game on Atari 800xl was The Goonies, but it was somewhere in 1986.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

Chaos. First you need to define what you mean by chaos. I guess I would go into a definite unpredictability! Not chaos. By playing with the machine you are able to predict what it will do (maybe today it learns but first it does the assumed algorithm anyway). It is different with man. He is unpredictable! Did you mean such chaos?

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

It's hard to comment on this topic. some like colorful flowers, others like black and white engravings. For me, personal graphics cannot be too full. Simple bright drawings. A simple game with simple graphics but with a complicated plot. This is the key to success.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
I only ever played one of these games and it was Monopoly, it was fun but there is a problem that you need at last 1 more person to play them with you and you can't always find someone when you want to play it’s good that now you can play this game online.
2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
Which mother wasn't angry at her child for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen… such their role…
3. What do you think about Chaos in the old-world board game?
From your description it looks like a lot of fun, I never played this kind of game so it’s hard for me to say something more but if there is opportunity, I would like to try play this game it looks interesting. But I don’t think that I will ever buy this game it costs way too much for a board game maybe if there were some people who would get me into it.
4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
Hmmm I think that the most beautiful graphics has Chaos, well at last I like the figurines other things are hard to say without a closer look
1. I have played Monopoly when I was younger. I wasn’t really good at it. Every time I played it one of my friends was stealing my money when I didn’t look. I also think the game is too much luck driven
2. Definitely yes. I played many strategic games, that involve analytic thinking contrary to the game mentioned above. My parents didn’t understand that by playing these types of games I developed essential analytics skills that will help me in my programming career later in life.
3. It look really interesting! Unfortunately I don’t have time to play it. Actually I don’t have time to play any game for that matter.
4. I really like pixel graphics. One of the games that have outstanding pixel graphics is Heroes 3 Might and Magic. I love looking at the game, but I don’t particularly enjoy playing it. The gameplay is too old for me.
1 / Yes, I often play board games. It is fun and greatly develops social skills. A video of the yoke is part of my life.
2 / Yes, since for them it was something incomprehensible and dangerous at that time.
3 / Pretty interesting idea.
4 / I can’t say right away or highlight only one, since each of the games is good in itself.

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

I used to play Monopoly a lot with my family and friends when I was younger. I remember that some games took hours to finish and the atmosphere was really dense which was really cool as everybody was really involved.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Of course, they even used to hide the power cord from time to time.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I am not really into that type of games but I can recommend a game called “7 wonders of the world”. I remember that I played a lot this game with my friends.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

To be honest, every of these games appeal to me in terms of graphics as they are very detailed in my opinion.

1. Monopoly, of course, it's a classic one. Not my favorite, but a good starter option. And that's all from the mentioned list. But, I have played also these: Munchkin (different kinds), Aye, Dark Overlord!, Carcassonne, Scotland Yard, Ticket to Ride, Game of Thrones v2 (I'm a happy owner of one as well as Munchkin), etc. Really, a lot. For example, I haven't played Chaos in the old world, but I have two armies from Warhammer 40k and they are almost finished. And yeah, DnD. The best experience. If you are reading this, know where to find a party for it - call me.

2. Sometimes they were, mostly my mother. Maybe because of the fact, that my first video game was my father's favorite one so he was in the club =). But later time on computer became a future profession, so everything became okay.

3. "Blood for the Blood God, Skulls for the Skull Throne!". Means: "Yeah, I would like to try it and maybe play Khorne".

4. From mentioned? Mmm... maybe Chaos. From all the games? Munchkin has good pictures with the perfect atmosphere and even the same cards in the deck can have different portraits.

1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
I played Splendor and enjoyed every second of it! I love optimisation games so Splendor suits me well. And of course I did play monopoly but enjoyed it only in my childhood. Nowadays it seems completely pointless for me and I call these type of games 'dice rolling simulation' where your actions are meaningless as there is always single best decision to take. I got the same, a bit unpopular opinion, that Catan is on of 'dice rolling simulation' game

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

They were! But they got used to it, kind of accepting it. Now, when I became a software engineer professionally I think they have more optimistic point of view how my childhood was spent :)

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

Looks very promising! It's definitely something I wish I could try if I had a group to play it with.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

Scythe is one of the most fascinating visually games to me. I love the theme, I love the execution and I won't lie that Polish connection to that game makes me a bit biased.

1. Yes, I played Monopoly once or twice, but I didn't find it that entertaining as I heard from my friend and other opinions. For me it's quite boring game. The rest of these games are totally new for me, but it seems that there are nice to try and play.

2. For sure, it wasn't common situation but I'm certian it happend at least once. They knew that I was able to find something to do besides playing games so they hadn't been mad at me that much.

3. Looks very nice. The concept is intresting, but I don't have time for playing so unfortunately I won't have the opportunity to try it in near future.

4. I'd say Scythe, because of polish accent in it.

1. Of course, I played Monopoly so many times that it's hard to count. The other games you mentioned seem to be interesting. I checked out the ‘Chaos in the Old World,’ and probably will gonna try it.
2. Well, they were never angry, but they worried about my spine and eyes. But on the other hand, that’s the way I study and work so it’s hard to change it.
3. For now, I’m playing in the Game of Thrones, so trust me I know what does it mean to dive into such an unrealistic word as one described in the Chaos.
4. Haha, after p1. And 3. it’s easy to guess. Chaos in the Old Word. I love this old style of graphics with maps similar to those from The Lord of the Rings.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with everything that you said about monopoly and splendor right now and I don't really play them right now but they were really interesting when I was younger and started my journey with board games.

Chaos in the old world is as you said not that great when you play as 3 players and I agree with that because this characters are interrupting each other with their skills so if there is 3 player, one player has an easy job to win.

I played Scythe 2 times right now and it was really interesting. I love the graphics and that this is quite an easy game to understand but can give you a lot of flexibility when it comes to tactics.

I see you are well experienced with board games. It was nice to hear what you think about all of them.
Bartosz Barnat said…
Oh I heard about Dixit in the past. One of my friends wanted to buy it just because of the graphics ;).

I love spending time with my friends playing board games but its quite hard to find 3-5 people that really want to play board games and won't ruin it (people that are creative and can feel the game). As you said, it depends on people if the game will be boring or not.
Bartosz Barnat said…
I highly recommend you try scythe ;).
Bartosz Barnat said…
Thank you for your comment. I didn't play any board game on steam yet but I want to try Scythe there. I love Jakub Różalski arts and I really like that they made even puzzles with that theme.
1.Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
Of course, yes. I love playing board games, I think they are needed because extend out creativity and unite people.
2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
Unfortunately, as I used to live with my parents, I heard that everyday. But we played board games instead. I think it's thanks to my parents
I have a lot of interest for board games.
3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I never played, but I'd love to learn the rules. Maybe you've heard of a game like "Zona, Chernobyl Shadow"?
4.Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
Jet many games that have nice graphics. One of them is Scythe (Graphics are made by a Pole), Zona Chernobyl Shadow, Horror in Arkham, Boss Monster
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
Of course I did, I love monopoly, it is one of my favorite game. I like it because it depends some skills other like just a luck. And also the atmosphere during the game is unpredictable. It could be angry or funny.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
They used to do it, but now they understand that I have to spend so much time staring at a screen. To be honest i do not spend that much only if I have to.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I wish I could try this, I would ask my friends if they want to also.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
Most of people says that scythe has one of the best graphics, but I have never played this game. What is more I do not play a lot so I dont have a game which I can say has the best graphics. I like the witcher.

When I was a kid, I used to play monopoly all night long, it's a game that I associate very much with childhood!

I've never been a child who spent a lot of time in front of a computer, because I just didn't have time for it. I've always done a lot of sports and I've always loved to meet with boredom. Even now, when I don't work or study, I don't use the computer at all.

Mysle, ze nie jest to moj typ gry, lubie planszowki, ale raczej takie spoleczne, ktore umila spotkanie ze znajomymi i dodadza zabawy np. Tajniacy albo Dixit

I don't think it's my type of game, I like board games, but rather social games that make meeting with friends fun and add fun, like "Tajniacy" or "Dixit".

I've never focused on game graphics, because it's not my goal to play games.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

I have only played Monopoly from that list, and I really loved it. I have spent so many evenings or rainy days in summer with my cousins playing it, it will probably be my favourite game forever.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Yes, especially my mum. But all my friends’ parents were angry at them because of that.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

It sounds really interesting, and I would love to play it one day, even though I’m not a board game type of guy. I like monopoly and not really anything else, and I have played a board game last time probably 10 years ago.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

Scythe looks amazing.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
Yes, I played a monopoly as a child with friends, I loved this one and now it is causing a ploy for childhood.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
No because I did not spend much time at the computer playing games.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I have never heard of this, but I like the description above. I like the graphics and I would like to try playing it.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

Well, in general, I like the GTA graphics: the dark background, the design of cars, weapons and the gait of people.
Of the above, I think Chaos has the most beautiful graphics.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

Among the games mentioned in this article, Monopoly is the only one that I have ever tried. I guess that board games veterans might call me a noob but I have never been a fan of those games. I see however that board games might be in their second golden age because their popularity hasn't been bigger in a long time.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Sure they were. When I was a child a might have been spending too much time in front of the screen but I loved it. My parents might have thought that there is something wrong with me but I think that I turned out fine.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I have never played it and this is the first time that I have heard about it. Could be fun. I have heard, however, a lot about the world of Warhammer 40000 and I have always considered it cool. I know there are millions of die hard fans out there and I respect that.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

Scythe in my opinion has some amazing artworks. I have been interested in other works of it's author - Jakub Różalski. His series "1920" has been a huge inspiration for me and I really respect him and his craft.

I love monopoly since it brigs me a lot of memories from my childhood while we spend so much time playing this board game with my 2 sisters and my father ;)

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Hah, yes in my childhood - that is true, but nowadays there is totally opposite situation, since my parents are spending to much time with their laptops or phones in my opinion.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I consider Chaos as really interesting option. I didn't heard about it before but for sure I will try it in the future.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

Very hard question! They have many different styles...

For sure 7 wonders looks cool. The graphic design is very nice for me. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

1. Of course i've played monopoly, and I still do this from time to time.
2. Rather not, I would prefer to play some game outside.
3. I don't like this kind of game. Before starting some game there is a need to read a manual for something like 3 hours. Many of rules even never will be used. No, prefer computer games with simple walkthrough gameplay with some magnificent plot. I'm not looking for challenges in games.
4. I'm not up to date with games, but I really like the look of The Last Of Us. And many other games from last 10 years. I think everything after Crysis is playable with some good entertainment. Nowdays games producers need to try on with some mechanics and unusual plots rather than conquer market with some new leg's lightings of his hero, in my opinion.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
From these games I have only played in Monopoly. It was quite good but only with funny friends.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
In my early ages not really, I read a lot of books in my childhood, so they couldn't complain. Later I used to play games on PC in my spare time and they were angry then.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I know world of Warhammer RPG and really like it, so I would like to try Chaos in the old world. It seems to be a little bit similar to polish game Stworze in the gameplay, so it could be interesting for me.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
In my opinion, both Talisman and Chaos in the old world have the most beautiful graphics. Maybe, Chaos is a little more beyond Talisman.
1. I have played Monopoly which was probably one of the first games I have played as a child. It is very easy and can destroy many friendships because it is so edgy sometimes.

2. Yes they were. I used to, and still, play a lot of computer games. Nowadays of course I have little less time because I study so most of the time I spend in front of a screen is work/studies connected.

3. I would like to try it but it is too expensive for me. Maybe if I tried at friends house and it would turned out to be a very good one I would save money for it. If it is that expensive it probably brings a lot of fun and is really complicated which can make it even more fun. Although I believe that for playing such complicated games you need to have solid, regular bunch of people that love games of this type and have time to meet and play them which is always hard

4. It may seem unusual but I really like the graphics of the classic monopoly. The design of the game is very simple as well as colorful. I think if the game was not nice in terms of graphics it wouldn't became such phenomenon.

Of these games I played only in Monopolly. I really like this game for 3-6 people parties. In general, board games have the advantage over computer games that we also spend time with friends.
Before my final exams, my parents chased me to learn, and I played computer games, but apart from that sometimes my parents didn't put pressure on me not to play. I am quite responsible and I know that I have duties outside games. I don't play games for graphics, but for content and interior; graphics are now the main advantage of the games, and this middle of the game should be cool. I noticed that most games have other game mechanics and developers are focusing on graphics.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?
I used to play Monopoly a lot. Unfortunately, I don't know any other games provided in this topic, but they seem to be pretty cool.
2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?
Of course, when I was 13 I used to play a lot of video games, but then I found more interesting ways to spend my free time (dance and acrobatics).
3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?
I think that it is an interesting game which requires a lot of preparations. It has a huge lore and it takes time to understand everything. I'm not a fan of such kind of games that require such a lot of time.
4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?
In my opinion, the best graphics are in The Witcher 3. Those shadows, colors, human behavior, hair on wind, sun cycle, amazing creatures.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

I think almost everyone has tried to play Monopoly. I still play this game with my friends and my family. I like the GoT version of it and the standard one. I think this is a great game and help to spend time in a fun and relax with your close friends/family.

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Of course, I had this problem, when I was younger. I always liked to sit in front of the computer and play some games from racing, like Need for Speed to some classic RPGs like Gothic.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I haven't heard about this game, so I will try to learn more about this game and maybe give it a try. Overall, for now, it sounds interesting to me, it could be fun to play with my friends some night on Saturday.

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

It depends on which graphic do you like. A realistic one, like in Crysis or more cartoon-like in Borderland. As for me, I enjoyed playing Witcher 3 some time ago. But I haven't tried the recent game releases, so I don't know, maybe there is something better now.
1. Have you ever played any of these games? What are your thoughts about them?

I have played monopoly. It's one of the most popular games in the world. It's classic to play it with whole family during free time to make facades between each member of family :')

2. Were your parents angry at you for spending too much time on your computer staring at a screen?

Yes, they were until it become my job. Then they finally saw that it can be productive.

3. What do you think about Chaos in the old world board game?

I don'y know this game, but according to provided description it seems to be interesting. Perhaps I would try it in the future

4. Which game has the most beautiful graphics in your opinion?

I like my European version of monpoly which has pretty fancy design. But also the classic version is great for my eye.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
