I have always liked watching horror movies,
feeling this thrill which was associated with later sleepless nights. I
wondered why I still watch them regardless. I
hope that horror film genre has a hidden agenda and we need to find it. I belive that it can provide us with more than just screams of terror whenwe see a suspicious shape outside the window while we are watching the screening.
Questions:
1.What do you think about horror
movies?
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
3. Do you think that horror movies can
teach us something?

I don't watch them much so can't really tell. I remember when I was a kid i watched X-files through gap between door in my parents room - it was scary. Later when I was older I've watched whole serie and it seemed pretty mild, but still it was quite enjoyable to watch. Thought, not that scary anymore.
It is quite vague. Everything could possibly teach you something. I guess they can, but what is it, is up to director and viewers.
The scariest movie I ever saw was my first horror movie, "The ring". Then I didn't watch horror movies for a few years, because I was so scared.
I think horrors can teach us how to deal with fear, but it's too strong a therapy for me.
I think you're right about a lot of weak movies in this genre. Still, I think that's the case with all genres of movies. There are very good documentaries but also terrible, so you have to choose them carefully.
Actually, horror movies can help us get used to our phobias, but often horror movies create them. I think that when we think about the behavior of the characters in these films and try put oneself in their shoes, we can learn how we would behave in an irrational situation.
2. Hard to answer this one, because I'm not sure how to characterise a scary movie. Nowadays there are a lot of "cheap" horror movies based on action, fast camera flashes, blood and brutality. However, I prefer horror movies that have suspense and realistic psychological approach to the characters. I believe my all-time favourite would be Psycho, but the one I find myself thinking late at night is a film called "Moon." It is not even classified as a horror film, it's a Sci-Fi drama about a man that is stationed alone on the moon. His only friend is an artificial intelligence program and his memories about home, that he misses very much. I will not give you any spoilers so I cannot tell you why this frightens me so much, you just have to trust me and watch it.
3. Yes. As I mentioned before it is quite an interesting study of human beings. How they will react on certain stimulants. It can give us perspective for our actions whether we agree with the filmmakers or not.
I do not like horror movies. Life gives me enough adrenaline and tension.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
I do not remember exactly. Often, horror movies are just gross and have too much artificial blood.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Help my horrors help us become resistant to stressful situations.
2. The scariest horro I remember watching was insidious 2.
3. I think they can make us resistant for tense situations.
But even among these films there are masterpieces, such as the film "Saw", at first glance it is disgusting, blood and guts everywhere, it is very difficult to watch BUT these are not meaningless murders and bullying. There is a good and even complicated plot in this film, which is already a rarity among similar films. I was able to fully understand what these films were about, only for the second time, and I think that watching these films is very difficult, but these are very strong films. From this film, you can learn something that comes in handy in real life, that a crime always leads to punishment.
In addition, one of my favorites and, in my opinion, one of the scariest horror films ever made is Omen 1976. In this film, everything is scary, every minute is scary, this is undoubtedly a masterpiece.
I like watching horror movies. However, I prefer those that do not scare directly, e.g. through jum scare, but have a strong influence on our psyche. I think they allow us to stimulate our survival instincts.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
I think it'll be "The ring." Maybe it's not considered a very outstanding film nowadays, but when I watched it I was much younger and it stuck in my memory.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
As I said before, I think it helps stimulate our natural survival instincts. By empathizing with the survivors of horror films, we may feel scared for them when they face danger and excited for them when they succeed in defeating the monster. A victory over such a monster can produce a feeling of victory for us as well. Watching horror films with a group can allow for a strong social connection, almost a “we survived this together” feeling.
2. Actually I was impressed by “IT 2017”. When watching in cinema, not at home, there is a pretty decent amount of creepy moments and even some jump-scares were good. By the way they had too much jump-scares in the second movie, in my opinion.
The second movie that I would recommend is “Midsommar”. Just watch it, it’s f-up and that’s why it can be interesting to someone.
3. No, they can only damage child’s mind, if parents let their kids watch horror movies. For adults there is 0 effect, I think.
I don’t like horror movies. I am scared when I watch these type of films, so the last time I watched a horror film was many years ago.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
The scariest horror film I watched was Conjuring 2, because the visual effects were very believable and it was based on true story which made it more scary.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Horror movies can teach us that if we hear the suspicious noise we shouldn’t go there and see what’s making that sound. Also these kinds of movies can expand our imagination so we can think in a more abstract way which is not always good.
2. I was quite impressed by "The Ritual", but i don't think it's considered as horror movie, more like mystery. The plot was good, all scarry things had story behind/reason and the ending was satysfing.
3. I think they cause more damage than good things, but we can learn not to mess up with paranormal stuff.
1. I think it is a interesting genre. It can affect us in kind of different way that other types of movies.
2. I can't think of one at the moment I haven't seen one for few years.
3. I think they can. It gives us a lot of insight into how we react to being scared of pressured.
2. I don’t know. How I said in question One, I don’t like watching horrors, so it’s hard to say because documents, comedian and action movies or fantasy are not scary.
3. Maybe, it depends on the movie. Because in every category we can find a movie which will teach us something.
2. The movie that I at least remember as the scariest one is probably “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, that the speaker mentioned. I have watched it when I was around ten, so the experience was quite intense. Otherwise I haven’t seen many horror movies.
Apparently, according to the TED talk, horror movies may teach us something, but in my opinion the claims made by the speaker were a bit far-fetched. For instance, the point he made about horror movies creating a community or posing controversial questions may apply to other genres as well.
3. I am not a fan of horror movies myself, I do not really find them entertaining. However I think you should be able to appreciate good cinematography, regardless of the genre, so I suppose I could give a horror movie a chance if the reviews were positive.

I'm that type of person, who despite of knowlegde that it didn't happen, it's not true etc. is scared by those types of movies. It's not a pleasure to watch a horror. I'd rather do something else in my free time.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
I think it was "It", the first one, not the remake. I think it's because I had 3 years or something like that then.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
I'm not that sure they can learn me anything, but I think somebody who likes them might see some advantages from it.
I really enjoy watching them. This is one of my favorite genres. I even watched two horror films this weekend.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
hahahaha I don't judge it that way. There wasn't movie after which I would be so afraid. One of my favorite movies are "Sinister" and "Jane Doe Autopsy"
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Not really, they are just movies. They stimulated my imagination, thanks to them I had many interesting dreams that I remember to this day and would be a good story.
They are scary and sometimes created by some sickos.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
I think It would be “The Grudge” about a ghost that have grudge and kills in a very painful way. Ghost are scary especially the one with grudge
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Yes, they can teach us few thinks like never go anywhere alone, never trust anyone to easily, don’t answer the door for strangers, mind your own business, trust your instinct
2. I think it is 'The Ring' or some other horror movie created by the Japanese. 'The Grudge' from 2004 is also super scary.
3. I don't think so. Of course there are some movies that try to convey some message, although I think most movies of this genre are created just to be terrifying.
2. I think the strongest and most terrifying and memorable horror movies I've seen are "The Nun" and "Split".
3. It depends. It seems to me that it doesn't depend on the genre but on the good script and story of the film. In every area there will be films that teach, entertain or frighten but carry a message.
2. I can't tell to be honest. None of the films were memorable enough for me to remember the best one. Besides. I always tend to forget about the title of the movie I was watching an hour earlier.
3. I don't think they can teach us something, besides obvious things like: do not go into haunted, dark woods in the midnight or some simmilar things that happen in the movies to create "amazing plot"
2. Definitly, the most scary horror which I have watched is "Lights Out". I would recommend you to watch it, if you never had an occasion. It is really scary.
3. In my opinion every movie can teach us something, it depends not of the type/categorie but of the film. It can teach us about relations between people, fast thinking or just life.
2. I'm not usually afraid of horror movies because I'm aware that this is fiction but I know one game that can really scare me and it is Outlast.
3. I think that horror movies can teach us to control our emotions.
I dont watch horror movies. I have a big list of films to watch and a few horrors are on the list but the horrors are not my favourite type of films.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
Probably IT! The clowa and jump scares was a little scarry but not that much. I cant remember any other horror film i have watched.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Yes. They can show a lot about our psychology. What we consider scary, disgusting and what impact does it have on us.
2. I don’t have one. I can just emphasize that the new remake of “It” was not scary but it was at least interesting to watch, which is remarkable.
3. Of course – don’t split up when going into the abandoned mental hospital and if you hear strange noises in your flat when you are sure you should be alone at home, just run :)
I don't like horror movies at all, while there are romantic comedy exists.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
Scary Movie 5.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Yes, not to watch them.
I think there are so many ridiculous and boring horror movies. But some of them can be really good
2. What is the scariest movie you've ever watched?
I didn't think of it right now. By the way, I can not watch a lot of movies.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
I do not think so.
I think that they are all about entertainment. Comedies are for those who want to laugh, romances are for those who want to be touched and horrors are for those who want to sense the thrill.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
Nowadays horror movies are not so exciting as they used to be for me so I can only talk about my old experience. I think that I was the most scared when I saw Paranormal Activity in the theatre.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Not really. Thrillers might have some kind of knowledge to themselves but horror movies – not really.
2) Hard to say, I haven't seen a lot of the horror movies, but if I had to pick the one that really made me horrified is the Avatar, I was really, really, afraid that this horrible 3D would make my eyes bleed and I will become blind.
3) Assuming it is actually a good horror movie, I would assume it can teach someone about their fears and how to deal with them.
2. As I said I can't recall any single one that actually terrified me. But for sure there were some that impressed me somehow. For example "Mirrors" from 2008 but it is possible it's because I watched it soon after it was relesed. I was younger, and have no idea how would I take it now. I also quite like new first part screening of Stephen King's "It". (but also think Pennywise was actually quite cute and poor little pumpkin! He was only hungry like... only once in a long while. And they all made monster out of him because of it :(
3. Definitely not human anatomy! Which is sad because I would appreciate much more horror movies that do some of a research before filming this kind of scenes. If you want to show us human body cutted in pieces than first make sure you know at least location of all organs. And finally learn difference between vein and artery...
Same as Mykola -- I just do not seem to understand the main point of those movies
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
Well, since I do not watch them, then it is hard to pick one. But probably Saw -- my colleague in the dormitory once watched and I was horrified by the sound effects alone.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
What exactly? If it is a documentary about some serial killers then probably yes, we can learn something about this phenomenon and how to detect/eliminate those people.
2. I think it was The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005). I was like 15-16 years old and I watched it with my dad at 2am. Well, I didn't sleep that night
3. Never go alone, don't leave the group and don't look back :D But for real - so far no horror movie has teach me anything. Maybe it's that I'm more resistant to fear? I dunno
The horror films have their target group, this means that someone loves it. I do not like it, because it makes the stress for me, and I do not want to be stressed just watching the movie.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
Astral, this was probably the first and the last horror I have seen.
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Yes, they can teach us to choose the better movies.
According to me, horror movies are needed because a person must provide some adrenaline (If we feel fear
that means we're alive). I think it's also a good form of entertainment.
At the moment, no scary movie scared me but it certainly gave me a lot of adrenaline, I mean the movie
saw. Scary movies can also learn a lot, for example, closing an apartment, not sleeping in the woods, not walking alone, etc
2. I've seen a production called Blair Witch Project. The film is shot amateurishly, and I was really scared while it.
3. I'd rather say they can drive us crazy. When we're in places where horror movies often occur, we can be paranoid that situations from the movie can really happen.
I like horror movies, but, unfortunately, there are few qualitative horror movies. Most of them consist only of screamers and blood, but the plot is horrible.
2. What is the scariest movie you have ever watched?
The scariest movie I have ever watched was "The Nun", but only because of its screamers .
3. Do you think that horror movies can teach us something?
Horror movies can only show as to how many there are ways to die :D
2. The scariest movie I have ever watched was titled We Are Still Here.
3. I think that horror movies based on true story can teach us that our world is full of
inexplicable or difficult to understand phenomena.
