Week 3 [21-27.10.19] Should you quit social media?

Should you quite social media?

In today's society most people use social media and the use of Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. become a necessary daily activation. People use social media in order to make friends all over the world, get the information and exchange views, opinions. That applications not only have a lot of benefits, offer many opportunities but also carry risk - depression, anxiety, lack of focus and concentration. Therefore, some experts hold the view that we should quite social media.

Please watch a movie that I attached below and feel free to share your mind about that.

  1. Do you agree with his statement?
  2. Why social media are so important in our society?
  3. Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?

Comments

I strongly agree with this statement.
First of all, today social media has become a tool of basic communication and work, e.g. for marketing. However, it is still just a help.
My activity on social media is limited to the messenger. I try not to share too much information about myself on the internet. I wouldn't have a problem with quite social media. He simply treats Messenger as a phone number.
Yeah, i agree with him totally. Social media are so important because it's easy and "equal" way to entertainment yourself.
Also it's one of the main thread of sells, this is why we won't never get rid of it. I thought, but I haven't quit fully.
I don't use facebook, but I like messenger. It has cool video chat. Why I have to give up on that thing:?)

Yes I do agree.
Social media are so important because it's the easiest way to communicate but also it has became one of the most important environment to advertise new products.
Not really, I've never been a huge fan of social media.

Do you agree with his statement?
I believe people should learn how to limit their use of social media instead of quitting completely. You can find many useful information/follow some news that you might be interested in etc.

Why social media are so important in our society?
They are important because it's a good source of knowledge, advertisement, socializing etc.

Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?
No, not really. I just try to control not to spend too much of my time on it.

Yes I definitely agree with him. Social media are important just because it gives us entertainment. If we are bored or we don't know what to do in a particular time it is most likely that we will take our phone from our pocket and just scroll through social media. It is a fast way of communication with each other too and I think people prefer to use it than making a phone call to each other. I wanted to quit social media and I'm thinking about it all the time because it is really taking a lot of valuable time from me just by scrolling and watching some weird videos or memes just because of boredom. If I quit social media I think I will be contacting with others by sms/phone calls or just meeting with them which is way better than messaging on some social media app.
PIOTR PAWLAK said…
Yes, I agree with him. In these days social media has become many people neccesery activity. They must check the news, argue about politics and see what is happening in celebrities life. Recently I limited social media like facebook or instagram to minimum. I just use it when people posts something in groups where I belong. I just use LinkedIn the most. I find it the best social media because of the news from IT world, people I work with and lack of politics. In conclusion, I think that most social media are not delivering value right now. People don't develop because they spend too much time there.
Piotr Bednarek said…
I totally agree with your opinion about Messenger, because I treat this application in the same way. In my opinion Messenger help us to stay in touch and make agreement with our friends quicker and easier.
Piotr Bednarek said…
I agree that social media give us a lot of oppourtunities to have fun, for instance games on Facebook. When it comes to video chat, I will catch up with this Messenger's convenience.
Piotr Bednarek said…
You can say that again. I totally agree that marketing or launching a new product though social media can bulid authority of brand and increase business/product visibility.
Piotr Bednarek said…
Your answer are exactly how I feel, because we should learn how to use social media wisely and effectively.
Piotr Bednarek said…
To be honeste I have the same problem. Sometime I can spend even one hour on watching mems or videos. I have checked once how mamy hours I waste in this way and I was frightened.
Piotr Bednarek said…
I respect your point od view, but I can't agree that social media deliver not value right now. In my opinion it depends on the topic, because in social media I can find a lot of content about my hobby - motocross. Moreover on social media you can find some materials to learn something new, for instance gettinenglish - profile on Instagram and Facebook that is devoted to education. You can find there vocabulary, grammar and motivation to learn English.

Yes, I agree with his statement. Nowadays social media plays a very important role. It is an easy tool to keep in contact with a lot of people even if they are thousands of kilometers from you. For me, this is the main source of news because you can find a lot of opinions from different angles. I think in our modern world where everything is changing so fast it is stupid to fully quit social media. I am a fan of limiting it. There are some applications that would notify you if you spend too much time on Instagram or Facebook.
PIOTR PAWLAK said…
I think I generalized a little too much that social media have no value today because you have actually provided great examples, especially when it comes to learning or hobbies. In these fields social media still offers many possibilities.
1. I think that completely cutting off social media is a very individual matter. Nobody should impose their beliefs on others. In a sense, I agree with the statement that social media has completely taken over the lives of some people, but here again, it depends only on themselves, if they really did want it or not. Personally, I use social media only to contact my friends and to track the latest news, e.g. on the Facebook main board or Discord app. Should I opt out of social media? No. And I will never do it because I'm absolutely fine and they are a complement of free time in which I have nothing to do, for example when traveling by public transport, waiting for a tram or queuing at the checkout, etc. Should others give up on social media? It's not for me to judge.

2. I think people often confuse real life with online life. Some, like me, use social media only when contacting friends, others chase likes and fame on the Internet. As for the lack of online presence or lack of career vision due to not having an account on social networks, I think these two things do not connect with each other. If you don't really want to use social media, don't do it, but still they help to some extent in contact and taking new opportunities in your life. Why is social media so important? People use their free time to browse the home pages of these applications, view trends, and the latest information. The smartphone is always at hand, you can open an application at any time and scroll the board, occupying your head with something.

3. I have never been so desperate, bored, overfed or upset by social media to quit them. Social networks are very useful for me, they make my life easier, I can do something in boring moments of life. If someone forced me to leave social media, I would probably communicate with friends via ordinary SMS messages, or chatting with them by various games chats or external applications that do not refer strictly to social networks.
Olha Romaniuk said…
1. Do you agree with his statement?
Rather yes. It's actually depends on the person. I have an accounts in different social media, but I never check it during working day/study, only in free time. Is there a big difference between this and radio listening?
But of course, if somebody can't control himself, and social media are preventing him from performing his tasks, so you have to do something. But I think even if to forcefully deny him access to all social media, such person will still find something to distract himself from.

2. Why social media are so important in our society?
In my opinion s.m. for some people, who are too shy for real-life interactions, can be good opportunity to stay in touch with another people. It can be even useful for mental health(not social media, but communicating with other people).
But of course, there are also disadvantages of such interactions.

3. Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?
I don't see the point in that(again, only because I don't check my s.m. during working day).
Piotr Bednarek said…
Thanks for your comment. I have tried to limit the usage of Facebook and Instagram but it wasn't easy. What is the best app that you can reccomend ?
Piotr Bednarek said…
Thank you for your comprehensive comment. I totally agree with your opinion and I am grateful that you note that people muddle real life with online life, I totally agree with this part of your statement.
Piotr Bednarek said…
I share your point of view that social media may be useful for timid people, for instance rating apps seem to be good solutions for shy people, they don't need to start a connection with somebody on real life because they can do this online.
I agree with his statement. I think that social media are very important for some people because it is their only source of knowledge about what is happening in the world. For others it is a platform for advertising their company or products, and for others it is just a workplace. In the era of fake news, clickbaits, promoting stupid behaviors I'm more and more often thinking about deleting my social media, but on the other hand I don't publish anything on them (sometimes I'll send a photo on a snapchat) so I don't know if it's necessary for me. Sometimes it's nice to see or read what's going on with my friends. To be honest I could live with only having a messenger to communicate, it used to be a gadu - gadu before :p
Yubin said…
1.Do you agree with his statement?

Yes, he is convincing people not to use social media, and I somehow do the same to my close friends, just don't want them to waste their time. for example, Chinese version of Tik Tok is just a brainwashing app, but teenagers are wasting time on it 24/7, I would rather read more and learn more than waste time this way, anyway, social media for pure communication is still so important that I would not quit these kinds of apps.

2.Why social media are so important in our society?

For sure it must be so important, because social media is a tool and platform for people to communicate and share ideas, insights, experiences and perspectives with each other, based on this, people can absorb a lot of new information and knowledge. However, social media is a double-edged sword that can also somehow destroy a person’s life.

3.Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?

Yes, I did, to be honest, I used to browse social media and post daily life almost everyday before 19 years old, and later I found out that it was just a waste of time, if we really need to get in touch with friends who really care us, we just need to keep talking once a while with heart through some pure app only for chatting, 'post' your day in the group chat but not a social media website. This saves me a lot of time to do other more useful things.
1. I partially agree with him, although I don't often use social media, especially when I have something to do, and I really have a lot. I only have facebook and I only go in to read interesting news around the world, some memes. I mainly use Facebook to contact my friends.

2. As I mentioned above, social media contain a lot of needed information. There is also unnecessary information that clutters our brains and even distracts our attention. I think that a person who uses social media reasonably shouldn't have any problems, addiction, etc.

3. No, I can't imagine quiting social media because it is a means of information from the outside world and communication with friends.
1. I don't really agree with it, I believe that everyone should do what pleases them as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, so if there are people whose are comfortable with social media at this level of engaggement then i would say "go for it".

2. Social media allowed people to stay in touch with much larger group of their friends than it was possble in the past so i think that this is its main power and meaning and that's the reason that it became so important.

3. I've thought about that but never done it as i'm not really using social media that much, mainly for news feed.
1. Yes, I definitely agree. In many people life’s social media start to an inseparable part of their daily routine. Sometimes it’s sad to watch when people firstly enjoy some moments on Facebook or Instagram instead of in real life. They forget that by doing this they’re simply filling the companies’ databases with their data.

2. It has started to be a natural part of people’s lives. If someone doesn’t have a Facebook account, others may wonder whether he/she exists. It’s also another thing that can help people to present themselves without communicating with others. Social media can also be a getaway for daily problems. By looking at other people’s lives you may forget about your own problems and start looking at others.

3. Yes, it sometimes came to my mind. However, the only things that prevent me from such decision is FB groups and messenger. When you have work to do, especially with big group of people, it can be very helpful and work gets better organised with these tools.

1. I partly agree with him. People instead of quitting social media could limit usage of them.

2. Thanks to social media we can be in touch with large group of friends or keep up to date what's going on on the world. It's much easier to do some things using social media like advertise or sell a product than without them.

3. I have never thought to quit social media. As I said it's easier to communicate with friends. If I had to quit social media, I would probably do it but until no one forces me to do it, I will use them :)
Marta Matysik said…
1. Partly yes. Social media is not necessary for us to live. However, they have some features that are useful, so you can limit yourself to them. Don't get addicted.

2. It seems to me that this is a broad topic, it is difficult for me to define exactly. Each of us looks at it a little differently. There are many functions, of course we can replace them in another way, such as access to information from the world. But some od people feel better if they have thousands of friends on Facebook, having hundreds of hearts under photos from people around the world. They care about fame or belonging. For me, the definite advantage is that it is a communicator. You can easily find someone (even after many years, or another country) and contact them. We don't always have a phone or email. So it's just convenient.

3. I try to limit social media. I would like to delete Facebook applications, but I need to have access to group and the information that appears there. That's why I log out at least during the day so I don't hang out on Facebook. Currently, I would not give up my messenger because it is the main form of communication and it is easier to contact than to get a phone number. I didn't have Instagram for many years and I was happy with it (unfortunately I had to download it recently).
Kristina Moroz said…
I agree with it, partially. There are people who can't live without it, they need to check other people life to feel themselves better. But sometimes it could be a really nice way to know someone's opinion or discuss any type of situation, or promote your business.
Well, I don't think about quitting from social medias. I have never felt that I would not be able to live without it. I have these days when I am not using any of social medias at all.
Cezary Róg said…
Yes I agree with his statement. These days social media play a huge role in peoples life. Many of them can't imagine life without scrolling Facebook or Instagram at least few times a day.

Social media plays a huge role in our society. People use it for many reasons. For many people social media is the only way to communicate with each other. People also like to see what are their friends doing and check latest news.

I never thought about quiting social media. I think that social media is for everyone but it's good to know how to use it right. I use social media mainly for contact and I can imagine contact with others without social media - I would simply use sms and phone calls. And I like the fact that following news pages always gives me news that I want to know.
I suppose that social media brings somehow more disadvantages than benefits to our life. I totally agree that people are mostly not aware that there are special teams that research statistics nearly every action of yours on the Internet. As it was said in the speech it's not coincidence of how social media works. They are designed to be addictive and to tell the truth it definitely works that way on most of the people. But i also think that the speech was too much generalized. Social media are mostly so important to us because it's so easy and common to use them. We can contact within few minutes with nearly everybody on the entire globe whether it's business or private talk. However, I personally think it wouldn't be so hard for me to quit using social media. At least in private purposes. I have a small group of close friends with whom I have no problem to call, to visit each other or even write letters or postcards. I also don't have a need to keep in touch with them all the time. We appreciate spending time together but also don't mind a lot of personal space involved.
Iryna Lehusha said…
I agree with him completely. Social networks have become an important aspect of modern life. Social media are a collection of knowledge, research, useful information. Through social networks, we run businesses, open schools and shops, and I can't imagine my life without social networks.

I only use Instagram and messengers, but I don't think I can delete them. It is possible to reduce the amount of time you spend on social media. You can set a daily limit in each application. And when you've exhausted it, you'll be notified. But if it happens that you I have to delete such applications or social media will suddenly disappear - I can communicate like in the old days, through calls and text messages.

Great comment. I used to gadu gadu and it was the best app to stay in tauch with friends. I agree that we can live without social media, but Messenger is musy, because we can communiucate through the Internet and it's easy accessible and cheaper than SMS.
Piotr Bednarek said…
Thank for your comment. I totally agree that some app are brainwashing. Moreover research shows that social media increases depression and lonelineas among young people. It may sound crazy but some apps have negative influence on our mentaly health.
Piotr Bednarek said…
I totally agree that some people are bound up in social media, for exapmle people use a phone during a meeting instead of socializing with friends. In my opinion such behavior is rude and negligent.
Piotr Bednarek said…
Thank to your comment, very nice perspective. Could you tell us why you decided to join Instagram ?
Piotr Bednarek said…
I really appreciate that you follow a tradition of writing a letter.
1. Yes, it is quite sensible.
2. As he mentioned, business is being held there, products are promoted there, people chat with friends, find new friends and so on.
3. I don’t use social media too much already. That one thing that keeps me on Facebook is actually that I won't be able to be in touch with my friends if I am to quit. Aside from that, my page is nearly abandoned and I can be offline for days without remembering about it.
Kuba Berliński said…
1. As the author himself said in the end of the video. It kind of does not apply to everyone. I think the very extensive use of it by some people is trully harmful. If there are people who cannot stop scrolling instagram or facebook board, they should be aware that they are in "danger". However, in a way I myself use social medias and if the material would apply to my person only I would not agree with the statement at all.

2. The answer is very simple. Just because everybody uses it. It is easy to get to people whether you are a company or a private person. Social media (at least facebook) does not only provide external content to you, but also allows groups of people to organise and easily get in touch. Social media are also important because all they require is just a smart phone and access to internet, which nowadays everyone hasand therefore, everyone can have easy access to anyone's attention.

3. No, Ive never thought about or and most likely will never really will. Only social media portal I use is facebook(along with messenger). I feel neither need to lower time I spend on it, which is not long anyways, nor the problem with some kind of addiction. To me it is a tool to browse content when bored, as well as communicator to groups and friends.
Do you agree with his statement?
Not in all aspects. I try limit myself in use of social media. I uninstalled facebook app from my phone and mute all notifications from all comunicators that i use but it realy makes life easier and in my opinion life without it can be more rought. It's like driving to your work 2 hours every day by bus when you can go there in 15 minutes if you would have a car. You can but at the same time you lose something. So limiting is for sure good but not using it at all in my opinion is also not making best out of internet as we can.

I don't know. Maybe it is that it makes life easier or maybe that we can create ourselves to be a person that we would like to be. I think everyone can have a different oppinion on that. My opinion is that i can contact with my friends easier or can find some inspirational photographs on instagram or find out about something interesting on facebook or on youtube.

I didn't think about quiting from social media. For me it would be hard to resign from the posibilities i comfort from using them.
1.Do you agree with his statement?
I fully agree with this. I am addicted to Facebook and Instagram myself, I browse them several times a day. Sometimes I have to control myself not to spend so much time with them.
2.Why social media are so important in our society?
Because in the media we can be who we want. We get rid of the shame that accompanies us in real life. We show ourselves the way we want to be seen.

3.Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?
I can't imagine that. I would stop having contact with many friends from abroad. Access to materials and events would be more difficult. It's very convenient in our time.
1. In my opinion, people definitely depend on social media too much, however I wouldn't say that quitting them is a good solution. I think, that social media could be very beneficial, given that one controls their usage.
2. Social media are important for most people, because it gives them an illusion of accomplishment and a boost of dopamine.
3. Personally, I use social media only to communicate with colleagues from the university, as it is the easiest way to get in touch with them. To communicate with closer friends, I use iMessage or Telegram as these apps don't contain any unnecessary functions and they at least pretend to care about users' privacy.
1. I agree with the speaker, social media has become way too important in our lives.

2. Nowadays it's the main communication channel, we see what is going on in lives of other people, we talk through social media sites and have topics to talk about thanks to it. What's more I think social media is quite often used by people for self-validation, which is a bit sad.

3. I don't really use social media sites. I try to limit it just to contain basic information about me. Although I thought about completely quitting social media, but it would be much harder to communicate with others.

1. I agree with his statement, it is one of most dangerous addiction these days.

2. I think people nature is to belong to the group and be appreciated. Facebook and others social media makes it easier to achieve it. We love to publish some photos of our holidays and share with other people with our statement. It is a tool by which we can discuss about random people or our close friends. It makes it faster and easier. It can be positive, because the usage can makes our life more productive. It depends how we use it.

3. I have never thought about it. I need to communicate with other people and why shouldn`t I use facebook if it may be the easiest and fastest tool. Sometimes, when I am on holiday, I quit social media for a week and I feel relaxed and better. However I have never thought about quitting it.
1. I agree but only with small part of his statement. People nowadays are too much focus on social media, they live like actors on web advertisement. I think we should limit how we are addicting to social media. But we cannot leave social media and don't feel alienated. Everyone use social media, so many events are announced there. World today is connected to social media and it's really hard to leave it.

2. As I said before, many events are happening online in social media. No one want to avoid that. These media are user firendly and free, I think it is obvious that is popular and addicting.

3. No. I have never thought about that. The only thing is that we should use social media for our purpose not to change our style and live because of trend or style in social media.

Yes, I do agree with his statement. The social media are crucial aspect of our daily life. Thanks to them we can stay fully updated not only with school, work or news, but also communicate with people we do not have many opportunities to see with. I have never thought about quiting social media, as it would be simply impossible to change the way of communication and collecting important information.

1. Do you agree with his statement?
Yes, I do. Social media plays a very important role in our everyday life and it is one of the best channels for any kind of advertising.

2. Why social media are so important in our society?
I think that at this point of development it would very difficult to find a different channel where people could quickly communicate with each other or advertise products so effectively. Unfortunately almost every business is dependent on social media if it wants to achieve set goals or benchmarks. I don’t like it very much but that’s the way it is right now.

3. Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?

Yes, I keep thinking about it. I don’t like the content that there is right now. To me, it used to be a simple solution for communication with friends. Of course, Messenger is still present but it grew to become much more than that and I don’t really like it. I have been thinking about switching to Whatsapp more but from what I’ve heard, Facebook is planning to increase connection between WhatsApp and Facebook/Messenger apps which might result in the same thing with just a different name of the app. If that happens, I think I will just stick to traditional phone calls and SMS.

Yes. Social media is not only important but dangerous nowadays. It's used for human opinions and beliefs control. It's a huge part of market so many companies will keep social media populated. It's a huge store of human metrics for scientists, marketers and business overall. People are addicted to social media.
Mostly I use social media for news and memes, so I don't think about quiting them. You can talk to people or write a message in some chat or messenger that is not connected to social media.

1. Do you agree with his statement?
I agree with the statement, I think we should resign or at least limit the use of social media. In my opnio, nowadays we are waste too much time on social networking sites instead of doing something productive.

2. Why social media are so important in our society?
Social media are so important in our society, because it is the simplest and fastest way to communicate between people. Additionally, the world of social media allows us to create a better, virtual image of ourselves, which allows us to improve our self-esteem for a while.

3. Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?
I have considered leaving the social media many times, but so far it has made it easier for me to obtain materials necessary to study. I also have many people and families who live far away from me and social media make it easier for me to get in touch with them.
1. I totally agree, having social media is not necessary to be happy human being. It's only entertaining and socializing part of our lives.

2. As i mentioned in previous question: it's for our entertainment and social life with our friends. It's also a good place for gathering informations.

3. I had to quit social media for about a month because of high school exams, it wasn't difficult for me, it was just cutting off my entertainment part.
Kgajewska said…
1. To be honest no - I don't agree with him. Yes, we should limit our useless "scrolling" through social media, but cutting it off completely is not a good idea for most of us. If we want to we can gather a lot of intresting news/patterns/ideas or inspiration from social media, it depends on how we want to use it.

2. Because on the Internet you can be whoever you want to and it's so easy to create a fake persona on social media. You can pretend to be happier/healthier/prettier or more intresting than you really are in the real life. Moreover social media is low-effort entertainment

3. No i have never thought about quitting social media for me it's not just fun - it's a source of information, luckly my current lifestyle forced me to limit my social media usage
1. I partially agree with that. I agree that no one will forget about you if you don’t publish new posts. But I don't think we should completely abandon social media.

2. Perhaps social media is important because you can share moments of your life with others. But it is also a way to show off and show your superiority, for example by posting photos in expensive restaurants or a luxury car.

3. Yes. I already did it a few years ago. I have only Facebook and only to discuss projects with classmates.
Mateusz Szych said…
1. Yes, I do. Today, social media is needed in communication. However, we should not abuse them.

2. The ease of communication, making new acquaintances and disseminating information has made social media an integral part of our society.

3. Yes, I even closed accounts on some portals. However, without some portals (e.g. Facebook) I can't do without. My communication with friends is based on Facebook and Messenger.
1. I don't know. I think people instead of quitting social media should set limits for yourself or something like this.
2. Source of entertainment, place where you can keep up to date with the news from around the world and most importantly for me only option to communicate with friends with whom I don't see too often. And it's easy to use.
3. I never thought about it. This is my way of communicating with people around the world and I would not want to lose it. I can control myself to not spend too much time in social media, but communication with my friends is what I really care about.
1. It has already become a fact that social media is a sign of the twenty-first century. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with using them. However, the most important thing is to be able to remain moderate and not use them all the time.

2. Social media are very popular because everybody nowadays uses the internet. People use them for various positive things, e.g. learning, knowing people, talking with them. Unfortunately, sometimes social media are used to slander and harass others.

3. I never thought about stopping using social media. I think I don't use them very often and they are only a form of entertainment for me and there is no need for me to quit them.
Vitalii Ohol said…
1. I partially agree. It's unnecessary to completely quit from social media. It would be better just to limit day-to-day usage.

2. Social media is a tool to communicate and share ideas. It's a most powerful and quick way to get needed information and be in touch with news from around the world.

3. Actually, I don't even need to think about that. I use social media more than one minute a day ONLY when I'm chatting with someone.
Do you agree with his statement?
Well, I do. Nowadays social media is taking big part in our daily life. People are getting closed and they usually prefer to chat.
Why social media are so important in our society?
Social networks are multifunctional and have a very simple format which makes it easy to use.
Have you ever thought to quite social media? If so, how will you get in touch with other people?

In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
