Week 4 [16.04-22.04.2018] - Who cooks better, men or women?

Who cooks better, men or women?
Who cooks better, men or women? We all know that it is such a hilarious question, but lets take a look on statistics.

As you can see, women are better in every factor, but every statistics does not take into account the fact, that only 4% of men are professional cooks. I would mention 3 facts, why men are better in cooking than women:

Every 3rd man feeling perfectionism while cooking
It does not mean that they are following a recipe step by step, number by number. I would say, men pay a huge attention to details, take it as a hobby rather than an obligation.

Men love challenges

This challenging spirit and their ego can never be brought down at any cost. Men compare the kitchen to sports and the chef to a coach. One of the main reasons why men are better cooks than women is because they make it a point to challenge their wife in kitchen. Through the means of a challenge, the determination makes the food tastier, surprised?

They like to eat and like to take experiments
The way to a man's heart is through his stomach and the way to a woman's heart is to impress her.

Taking experiments, adding unordinary ingredients or mixing not-mixable things can make man’s dish innovative and perfect. A lot of men live alone and get bored and tired of takeouts. Cooking their own meal does make them good cooks, because they always want to try something new. Also experiments usually work positively, even if it is for the first time.

1. What is your opinion for this kind of “derbie”?
2. If you had a chance to find a good chief for your restaurant, who would you choose man or woman? (considering not only professional cooking skills, but gender, management skills and etc.)
3. Despite the fact women are called the householders, what do you think about the change of men-women role?

1. I don’t understand the question.
2. Considering the fact that Chef position is reserved for experienced cooks. Their experience is the most important indication of their skills. And if they were able to prove themselves along the way their gender shouldn’t matter.
3. I’m glad that social norms regarding roles imposed by society are more relaxed. And that the people feel more free to do things and manage their relationships the way they want it. That doesn’t mean I think that woman should stop cooking and that it’s now a man’s role.

I don't know who cooks better but I am definitely a terrible cook so there is that.
If I were to hire a chef for my restaurant I would consider only their experience in the industry, cooking skills and how they cooperate in the team.
I think that there will always be things, professions and roles that are considered masculine or feminine because people like to categorize things but it is harmful to consider that these are fixed for one gender. You should do whatever you think suits you best or you like doing the most and don't thing constraint because it's considered "manly" or "girly".
Filip Sawicki said…
I don’t think that this is a derby, because nobody cares whether your food was cooked by a male or female. Everyone has their own approach to cooking and at the end what really matters is the quality. If I had to choose the chief I would pick one with the greatest experience, best social skills and surely not by the gender. Women stereotype of “householders” is long gone and the change of men-women role is pretty obsolete since feminist movements during 20th century. Nowadays nobody sane should discriminate any type work on the gender basis.
Anna Koca said…
I am a better cook than my boyfriend (typically feminine) and also a better driver (typically masculine), so I guess there is no pattern of how we are gifted. I would definitely look at a person's CV and work experience before hiring him/her as a chef. I really wouldn't care if it was a man or a woman. I think that social roles are getting slightly more balanced and evenly distributed between both genders, which I think is OK. Traditionally it will still need a lot of time for men and women to get totally equal on every social level, but maybe that is not necessary. It is just good to remember that women can be just as good cooks as men, and men just as women.
have you ever watched football or any kind of sport?
derbie - it's a competition. So in the question above, i asked you what is your opinion about the competition between men and women in cooking? tell me please
i would disagree about stereotype you mentioned, it's not gone and you can find a statistics about how many women are householders nowadays, especially in europe. But if the experience is the same, all the skills are good enough and everyhing is equal( i know that it is impossible) but who would you choose?
i think that every man must know how to cook, even the easiest thing. There are a lot of bad things can happen in your life and you must be ready for everything. So in 2k18 it's a bit of a shame to not cook at all.
as i asked a person above, if the experience is the same, all the skills are good enough and everyhing is equal( i know that it is impossible) but who would you choose?

I don't think being good at cooking depends on your gender. In fact, I think that being good at anything doesn't depend on your gender. There are good cooks among both men and women and what you haven't considered in your article that different people have different tastes in food. If some cook is really good at cooking spicy food that doesn't particularly mean that person who will try this type of would like it (for example maybe this person doesn't like spicy food).
I wouldn't consider person's gender as a reason why I should hire him or her. I would rather organize some test for that person to stress her or his cooking abilities and based on results would make my decision on hiring him or her.
It's old sterotype. Today both women and men do the same job related to households.

I think that cooking is just a talent not really depended on a gender, age or any other factors. I am cooking not really good and always have been impressed by cooking process by talented chefs. However I think if there would a competition between men a women in cooking, I would cheer for men, but who knows who will win. I think that a chef at home should the person who can cook the best.
Al kinds of such man/woman "derbies" are just plain stupid, of course everyone has it's limitations that are sometimes dependant on gender, but usually it is not the case. If i would find a two equal chefs male and female who are 100% equal in skills and experience i would pick a man because it is easier for me to work and maintain working hierarchy in staff with a man rather than a woman. The gender roles are dellusional and were dictated by the needs of old society in a world that was absolutely different from what we have now, we live in a time where people can achieve anything no matter the gender, what matters is equality in rights and responsibilities that is actually reached but some feminist organizations just cannot stop and try to achieve domination instead of equality.

1. I'm not sure, but usually professional culinary competitions are won by men, so I could say that men, but it's worth paying attention to who usually cooks dinners. Our mom and grandmother, who have the best dinners? That's why i think there is not a clear answer.
2. I would never suggest gender when I'm selecting employees, it would never matter, I would look more at skills and experience. Unless we are talking about beautiful waitresses, I'm kidding :P
3.I think this is an old stereotype, which is no longer as important today as it used to be.
Unknown said…
In my opinion, this answer does not need to deepen, the food better prepares the one who just
makes it better, maybe it's a woman or maybe man, everything depends on the individual approach,
I have seen many good women and men cooks.
As for the restaurant, as I mentioned above it doesn't matter what gender is but who cooks better.
So I would prefer and chose one who is best in it.
As for the change of roles, I have seen a lot of young couples in today's reality, in which men are
gourmet and prepares the dishes themselves.
For some, this is a hobby, and there are women who just love to eat and do it, not because they
seem to do it just because they love it.

I read some research that men are better in the kitchen, but I can't agree or disagree with that. I know very few men who cook well (I don't consider bbq as a cooking). I am not an expert on the topic, but I think there are fields where men are better and fields were women are.

It doesn't matter to me if it would be man or woman.

Women are no longer called 'householders'. It a stereotype. We live in wonderful times when anyone can develop professionally.
Marcin Mróz said…
I wouldn't say that men are better than women in cooking, just from my life experience. ;) But in fact I don't think it's a matter of gender, when it comes to cooking skills I believe that it's just a point of proficiency and everyone could master it if he/she would cook regularly. If I had to pick a chef for my restaurant I would definately not be governed by gender. Actually, I would take into consideration everything but gender. :P As I said before cooking skill could be gathered by anyone, it's just a matter of time and good recipes. :)

There is no difference for me who makes me meal, if it is woman or man. At my home it looks like that: mainly I do dinner shopping and cleaning. I would like to call my girlfriend a housewife. I like to cook and experiment with new flavors. Looking at my friends, I can really cook a lot. I bake cakes make soup.
From my point of view everything depends on your taste. How could you say that someone cooks better than someone else? I would say that you can only rely on statistics which states the fact that people would more likely prefer a meal cooked by a woman. Cooking skill is very hard to measure because there is no standard of measuring such things and moreover it doesn’t depend on gender.
When it comes to hiring a good chief I’d give this task to someone else because I am simply incompetent.
Iman Masjedi said…
Men don't have magical cooking abilities. Neither do women. It's not even men or women. Though clearly there are general differences between how men and women are treated in life. There are historic and cultural pressures that are placed on women around the world that subsequently don't fall on men. Women get pregnant. Women are told to become house wives. Women are expected to give up careers and stay home.
Because of this, women will face obstacles that are not placed in front of men. Because of this, men can get a job and face the insufferably long hours where a woman has to compromise every step of the way. And of course, because of this, most chefs will be men.

This kind of comparisons sounds a bit superstitious to me.
If I had to choose chef for my restaurant I would be rather interested in skills, previous experience or certificates. In my opinion, gender does not a play a role in this case.
As long as it works for both sides, I don’t see a problem in men and women switching their roles
I think in this case difference in cooking by man and woman in type of thinking and method on witch they are cooking. As I see by myself I always cook too slow but I make all with huge accuracy and in most cases result is perfect. I don't want to say that all woman's cook not so good but most of them stay on middle level I think.
Illia Shynder said…
I think this derby is a bit ridiculous. Personally I think that cooking is a man work. I'm cooking better or at least not worse than my girlfriend, my father is cooking better than my mother and granddad is cooking better than grandma. I'm not saying that it is always like that, just in my case my experience tells me that men are better in cooking.
I definitely would choose a man. I'm not sure that man is better for cooking, but I think a man would cook better and has a bigger chance to invent some new, good and tasty food. Again, I didn't mean to abuse women or something like that, just my experience tells me that, plus I've heard that chiefs are mostly men.
I don't understand it. For me better cook is just better cook. After watching 1st picture i told my self. Sure its true becouse mens are danm too lazy to cook. Dont care this much about healty eating, saving money on perparing food yourself etc. But, when it come to coocking schools most of students are mens 'shock'. I guess its based on fact that womans cook usually for themselves and its sort of daily activity not like a hobby.
Marcin Górski said…
It's hard to compare that. There is no difference about who is cooking. The most important is skill and good taste, intention to mix a lot of spices too. I know a lot of mens and women who cook very good.
When it comes to finding a good chief, I’d simply choose the best person for the job (skill, experience), regardless of their gender.
Women and "householders"? It's a bad stereotype. I think that home responsibilities should be divided into every resident of the house.
Unknown said…
Of course, everyone can cook the same way. It does not matter if there is a man or a man.

I would choose who is the best for this position. It is not important to me whether it will be a woman or a man. I look at the skills and the person, for example, is nice or polite.

It's just women who know how to better manage a home. But there are also men who do it and are just as good at managing. It depends on the person and not on the gender.
Come on, it's a stereotype when you are living with parents or with a girlfriend and you are both young. If we are speaking about marriage it's normal thing, when the mom is helping to grow up kids and father is earning money.
Come on, it's a stereotype when you are living with parents or with a girlfriend and you are both young. If we are speaking about marriage it's normal thing, when the mom is helping to grow up kids and father is earning money. - As i said above

Agree with you, it does not seem it is a big problem to change roles and i appreciate that you are not calling it stereotypes. People don't understand the meaning of this word.
I don't want to be a pussy, but if u are all calling it stereotype, it means, that you are not enough mature to talk about real life in 2k18 and 70% that you are living with a parents or with a girlfriend with no responsibilites and care of other people.
I know what you are talking about and fully agree.

1. What is your opinion for this kind of “derbie”?
Do you mean a rivalry between man and woman in the kitchen? I see all these talented chiefs with global fame and they're all men, but excluding specific individuals, women are the ones who had conquered kitchen worldwide.

2. If you had a chance to find a good chief for your restaurant, who would you choose man or woman? (considering not only professional cooking skills, but gender, management skills and etc.)
I would choose a better chief, obviously. It would be a person with not only better cooking skills, but also management and leadership abilities and I think that gender is the last thing I would take into consideration.

3. Despite the fact women are called the householders, what do you think about the change of men-women role?
In the context of householding? I am not used to see a man who runs his house, but it gets more common from year to year. In my opinion, women pay more attention to the details and that could make them better householders, but on the other hand, men tend to be more technical and it is rare to see a woman in a DIY shop.

Well... Feminism nor chauvinism won't give anyone food, so basic skills in cooking should be a muss. But some people like to challenge others, so I'll leave this for them.

I'd didn't give a damn about the gender, skin color or other things when recruiting a chief to my restaurant, but the skills, that would impact their work. It's the only thing needed for me as a boss of the company. And in most cases it will be the result of the test, they would have to pass.

I don't like vision of changing men-women roles. Because I don't like doing chores at all, so I'd like to minimize amount of chores I will be doing in the future. But sometimes it's necessary to do some of them by myself, so I'm the only one, that can make it.
Unknown said…
In my opinion is not a derbie. It's normally that one man is better in one thing and another in other. In my opinion it's not conected with gender but with passion.

If it comes about next question my opinion is similar. I think that good chef is when someone have passion and talent. We can't say about someone that "she is better because she is a woman" and the same with man.

And the last question... I'm women and i'm totally bad in kitchen. My boyfriend is cooking grate. But he don't know anything about cars when I'm totally obsessed about it.

And it's great! We are different and it's amazing :)

Thats not a big deal, men are generally stronger and taller than womens.
Men’s IQ distributions are more spread out. There are more male geniuses than
female and there are more men with very low IQs than women, Hence those male geniuses
often take all the prizes - including cooking competitions - which leads us to
conclusion that judging by the ability of mastering a skill men are better at cooking, however
there is a chance that there are more women who can cook slighty on average better.

Kristina Moroz said…
Do we still live in that time when women do "women's" job and men do "men's" job?
I don't care what gender cooks better if it's tastes great. Even though if two different person made same meal by the receipt it will tastes different. We all are different.
So if person make good meal that we could sell - welcome on board!
One more stereotype - householder. Why women? Because we can handle mop and vacuum? Or because men is too good for that?
Maybe, woman should give up on everything and sit at home, raise a child, cook dinner and be more like a beautiful plant and a man earn money? Seriously, married people can share responsibilities and do it all together without unhealthy addictions.

1. What is your opinion for this kind of “derbie”?
It's funny, but in my life, cooks the one who has time and energy.

2. If you had a chance to find a good chief for your restaurant, who would you choose man or woman? (considering not only professional cooking skills, but gender, management skills and etc.)
I would took the one who cooks better, and have better team management skills.

3. Despite the fact women are called the householders, what do you think about the change of men-women role?
I think that at 21st century it's a sexism and we should divide responsibilities not on the base of sex.
I think gender does not matter in this particular example. I belive if someone pratice a lot they would achieve mastery in that area. So compaing men and women doesn't really matters to me. I guess again I won't look at the gender of a person, I'd rather see what they are capable of. In modern families and among young people i think there are equality between man and women I don't realy catch up on this nowadays feminists (I think that in our society there is no discrimination, it is my opinion and I 've never saw any act of that in daily life). For me it should personal choice who would stay and raise children , but I do prefer balanced attitude towards life that means I would rather split household duties between partners.

1. I don't like this topic. As simple as that, when You ask me "Who do it better, men or women?" I've just simply answer - "The person who loves it more, and is more devoted to their work/passion". I just don't judge people based on their gender - It's better to look at the appearance rather that gender - You can easly make an opinion just by the look of the person.
2. I don't feel answering this question - gender doesnt matter, the person does.
3. I don't think at all, just do what You want to do and don't coplaint or gain profit from your gander.

//I don't know if I cover Your question, but I don't feel like I need to made up my answer just to fill the comment section

I put more interest in eating rather than cooking, however I have heard some opinions like the one you presented in your article. From my point of view, how you end up as a professional cook depends on many things, not necessarily the gender. One thing I know for sure, it's very easy today to follow a recipe like a list of tasks, if you screw it than you stay out of the kitchen :).

I'm a man, so I choose a nice lady cook.

I would find myself as a resource provider if I had a family.
1. Healthy competition is always good. I dont believe any competition (work related) can be strictly dominated by either man or woman. As for men's competitiveness and perfectionism during cooking i did knew about it.
2. There is nothing else that i as a restaurant owner, would be interested in than professional cooking skills of a person being employed. Man or woman it does not matter. You asked your question in such manner to bait out the answer u wanted to hear that is unprofessional in every space. But guess u want a simple answer here it is : i would choose whoever comes first. Filtering out talented people by their gender, race or any other thing non essential for a job is straight up racism.
3. Our society has evolved from this stereotype of a woman staying and caring for home/children and man being the hard working financial pillar, Times change. Even in our country more man every year take "paternity leave" to spend time and be present withing child's first days.
agree with your statement about men-women roles. i think that every person on our planet has own role .
agreed with a "personal choice". Who can do it, let man or woman do it. If the person is good at something, let him improve it by doing it.
i've already said, that you are living in a early 20's when you don't have such an important care of somebody or any kind of responsibilities. And that is not a stereotype, it is a real world. And i want to mention important words above, that in some situations, cooking or doing something at home did a person, who has a time.
Maciej Nowak said…
I don't think there is a derby between men and women, as nobody who is sane cares about gender of their chiefs. If i had to pick some chief to my restaurant, gender would be probably the last criterion. The most important would be experience and their manner. It is good that men-women role has become more flexible, so anybody can do whatever they like and not be constrained by gender.
Unknown said…
Nice topic! It's interesting and easy to read. I can agree quite on every word, from my point of view the "derby" may not be the same in different countries. Basically, man and women are equal humans and the only difference in way they cook is that how often should do it. If you do it once a period you pay attention to details and try to do it like a hobby, but if it is everyday routine you have a lot more thing to pay attention on.
If I have a restaurant I would hire middle-aged man, because for most people (customers) a chief-man associates with top-level cooking.
In my opinion, "keeping house nice" is not someone's duty. Everyone who lives in has to work on it.
Jakub Lisicki said…
I don't treat cooking as a sport and I don't find any fun in it being competitive. I like sharing knowledge and improving my cooking skills without the feeling of being evaluated by anyone. For me, cooking is mostly about trying new things and improving the ones that we already know. The best cooks out there are born with their cooking talents. I think it's pretty similar to design - you have to be born with special taste and set of skills to be noticed.
I wouldn't make gender a factor when it comes to hiring anyone. It simply doesn't matter and in my opinion - doesn't influence people's cooking skills.
I don't think there is much of a change in this topic. The society is just more tolerant to many matters and we live in times where it is easier to make some things happen. We are finally able to make choices without having to care about gender or social acceptance (not all of them, of course. we are just more free when it comes to many terms.)
Unknown said…
For me there is no matter if the chef is a male or female. The most important thing are skills and this is a clue of the topic.
"If you had a chance to find a good chief for your restaurant, who would you choose man or woman? (considering not only professional cooking skills, but gender, management skills and etc.)"
Why do you think that there is or can be any difference in management skills or any other skills because of gender?
Someone is good at something or not and this should be main reason while deciding whom you hire and gender has nothing to do with that.
Unknown said…
1. I do not consider it a competition. 2. It is impossible to choose a chef in the kitchen of his restaurant and do not pay attention to his professional qualities (on the individuality of dishes, on the basic dishes on the menu). I agree that men cook better because they invest soul in the process, so I would like the chef to be a man. 3. It is difficult to judge the role of men and women in the kitchen. Probably my will in the kitchen depends on my mood, when I feel like I can cook an unusual and tasty dish, but I do it about once a week. The woman in the kitchen spends more time, they cook daily and several times a day, so most often their meals are simple and repetitive, but these are the most delicious breakfast lunches and dinners.
I don't see the point of comparing men and women in any field. Differences in the numbers of men and women in the profession may result from many reasons.
Rather, this is not due to the fact that one sex is better in cooking. In the same way, when it comes to employing an employee, I would evaluate an employee only on his or her skills.
I prefer and I hope that most people nowadays also prefer partnerships with equal division of roles.
The way to a man's heart is through his stomach and the way to a woman's heart is to impress her. Impressing her with your cooking is very sensual for a woman. So, which is why it is one of the reasons why men are better cooks.=)
Unknown said…
Well, all the 3 "facts" are quite debatable. The person who likes to compete doesn't always win. According to statistics you don't have to trust the statistics. So I don't think we should spend time arguing about which sex does it better. My mom cooks, my dad cooks, I have never heard them trying to decide who is a better cooker. If I would hire a cook, the gender would be the last thing that I would consider. Really, 2018.
Cecylia said…
My opinion is devided , my mum is an amazing cooker but my boyfriend is too . They both love to experiments , I personally don’t like to cook , and I’m not ashamed when my boyfriend is the cooking one. I feel that he loves it so why I should change that . I would chose for my restaurant a person that is really good at it and not by the gender .
Unknown said…
It is very good! Competition is a great way to make yourself better in what you do. It is silly to split gender as they are the same.
In my opinion gender does not change anything. It is all about skills and passion. No matter if you're a man or woman if you have talent and you're hardworking you're welcome in my restaurant.
I think that woman and man are equal so we definitely should not change anything as I believe that there is no such a thing like men or woman role. It all should be natural. Every person likes different things so how they share theirs duties should be individual in every home.
Unknown said…
I won't call it derbie. I don't care about the sex of the food maker. The only thing is crucial for me when it comes to the food is the taste. It's easy to measure it with your scale if it's tasty or not for you and the fact of who made it should not influence the score.

It depends. I have no simple answer for this. There are so many factors that we should consider before deciding this. I would try not to focus on the gender but ask proper questions to both candidates to test if they suit my needs.

Because many things have changed, we don't have wars, problems with food, jobs etc. I think the strict rules we used to have about the "role" in the family for men and women have smudged. We are different, and every relationship has different gaps to fill.
Unknown said…
I think, that Filip is right. Especially about cooking - gender doesn't really matter. Skills and experience in cooking are the most important things. I can't tell you who would I choose, because I don't really care about it. I'm like - if food was good enough I just enjoy it, no matter if man or women prepared it.
About women stereotype of householders - I also think, that it's gone. I knew some families, where man is also doing most of the "house things" and it's totally normal.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
