Week 4 [06.11-12.11] - The Flat Earth Society

This video presents the Flat Earth Society and why flat earth believers are so convinced that the Earth is flat. Moreover it demonstrates how the flat earth looks like and how "it works".

Questions:
1.Why do you think that the Earth is flat or round?
2.Would you like to go into outer space to make sure that your theory is right? If so,  how would you convince the others?
3.Is it important for you to know whether the Earth is flat or round? What does it mean to you?

I'm pretty sure that Earth is round, but who knows maybe it actually has donut-like shape :)
I would definitely not try to do something crazy like this. If I was really that suspicious about shape of Earth, I would rather send some kind of probe that would livestream the whole flight on the internet. Actually, I've recently heard about one person who launched himself on the high altitude balloon to proof that flat Earth theory and it didn't go very well.
For me the answer to the third question is obvious - I don't care because I know the facts, but still, it's enjoyable to watch how conspiracy theorists try to convince everyone that their claims are true.

1. I have never in my life doubted that earth is round, and I have no reason to do so.
2. No. It can be proven or rather it can be concluded based on observations without leaving the surface of earth.
3. It’s a basic knowledge. It’s good to keep that in mind. For example when you perform geographic calculations or you deal with time zones.

I think that the Earth is spherical because that is the scientific consensus on that topic. Nevertheless, I am not a rocket scientist or astronaut or anyone who would use practical implications of this fact in their work so for all I care it could be 5-dimentional cone-shaped entity. That is the reason why I wouldn't go to space to check that but I would definitely fly there for other reasons - curiosity, for example.
As I stated before, it doesn't matter practically for me whether the Earth is flat or not but it's annoying when other people waste their and everyone's time on constructing conspiracy theories like that. Even worse when their theories constitute a threat to the society - like anti vaxxers.

I am positive that the Earth is flat. If it was round, the soles of our shoes would wear down quicker in the middle than on the edges. Additionally, we have proof that landing on the moon was a hoax made up in the Hollywood studio to boost up USA in the Cold War. Terry Pratchett has presented and idea on a flat disc carried by four elephants standing on a big tortoise that flies through space forever. That idea speaks to me more than round earth theory.
I would love to go to the space to prove to everyone that the Earth is flat and take the first authentic footage for the humanity. However, I think NASA would never let me do that, and I would sooner get killed than managed to share that footage with others.
To know that the Earth is flat is a matter of truth to me. People should know the truth so they stop being so gullible and easy to manipulate by governments and big corporations.

Earth is neither flat nor round! There is no doubt, we are living on top of a galactic size turtle. NASA was lying about first human landing on the moon, because there is no moon. In fact NASA is an organization created by illuminati for their propaganda program. Everything they say is pure evil and their prime target is to rule our world, people wake up! I wouldn’t go to the outer space because there is no such thing, there is only a turtle supporting our world. If I had to convince others about this theory (which is not a theory it’s a fact) I would dig down into earth’s crust until I’d find turtle’s heart, thus proving my point. It is immensely important know about earth’s true nature, because we humans must escape this insane circle of intrigue created by illuminati and reptilians.

I don`t really care about that question that much, but there has been lots of researches that proves that the earth is round and I trust them. This is not a blind trust in everything, because those theories are based on real nature facts. Actually as I remember from my school course Earth isn`t really round, it has more ellipsis shape. Proofs are based on features like climate changing, rotation around its axis, rotation around sun. Like I just can not imagine how is it possible to not round object to spin around its axis and around another object simultaneously. Nevertheless, I don`t want to prove it to anyone and I don`t really care if it is flat or not, because it won`t effect my life in anyway.
That what happens when a religious fundametalists try to do "science". Of course no one knows the truth, but a lot of scientifical and astronomical achievements were acheved by assuming that the Earth was round, and what was achieved by assuming Earth was flat(except for burning a few heretic scientists of middle ages alive)? Of course it is a stupid marketological scam that has it's profits coming from people who like to be "the ones who know a real truth" and enjoy besiedged psychology. I would like to go to space one day, but for different reason than proving a theory that influences my life in no way.

1. I travelled around the world a bit, so I'm sure in 99% that the Earth is round, because we can't be sure for 100 % of anything.
2. I would like to fly into space one day, but not to make sure that the Earth is round. This can be proven by being on Earth. Is no need space flight.
3.I don't think that is important to me, because I don't deal with this field of science. The truth about the Earth is only important for science, so that it can develop further
Unknown said…
Earth is round, I believe so because that this is what we have learned, and if someone has confirmed it and if the world recognizes that the earth is flat, then I will be very disappointed.
Of course I would go to the cosmos to see if all this is in my eyes, but I do not know how to make people believe me, maybe they should just believe me.
If I take into account the whole life I believe that the earth is round, perhaps I prefer it to be. But on the other hand, as the older generation people would say "Let's be good, and the earth can be even square"

This whole thing about the Earth being flat became a meme a while ago. People started making fun of those staunch 'flat-earthers' and their dumb theories and arguments why the Earth is flat and not round. Here is an example:
http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/344/654/45b.png
I don't know why people would even believe that the Earth is flat, it just doesn't make sense. I wouldn't say that it's very important to me that the Earth is round, it's just a fact that was proven in XVI century by Mikołaj Kopernik and people should just accept it and stop having medieval mindset.
Foodocado said…
People who think that the Earth is flat must be some morons. It's obvious it is round.

I wouldn't go to space to ensure that I am right. I would go there to experience something new, something which is exciting.

I have never thought about this topic. I am 100% sure that it is round and end of the topic.
Yevhen Shymko said…
I just don't see why it would matter. As a programmer it's common not to understand how the whole system works rather some small part you need to operate on. I see why it might be interesting for scientist but for an average person is absolutely unimportant. Human mind have tendency to notice things that will support point of view they hold on to. So in conclusion I would recommend just stop to care about things that unimportant for you either way.

I don’t understand how people can think that the earth is flat. Somebody is bored. Of course I would like to fly into space. In order to prove that the earth is round, I would take a picture. For me it doesn’t matter what the earth is like, it can be even square. I don’t understand this phenomenon of flat earth. Or maybe it's one big conspiracy and we are wrong ?
Iman Masjedi said…
There are innumerable way to prove this, if you have the time to consider them. Very simple ones, scattered all through the various Flat Earth threads.
The FE people tend to start by touting Eric Dubay’s ‘200 proofs’ book (and video), but that contains almost nothing which is a proof (much of it is unsubstantiated claims), but each of the 200 claims has been debunked here: 200 Reasons why flat-earthers are simply wrong. (Rebuke: 200 Proofs the earth is not a spinning ball. http://blog.daimonie.com/2015/11/200-reasons-why-flat-earthers-are.html )

Now, the model of the Earth as an oblate ellipsoid is managed by an international organization in France (not NASA). You can read about their efforts to refine that model here: The International Terrestrial Reference Frame http://itrf.ensg.ign.fr (ITRF)

I'm amazed how many people believe this nonsense. I hope, that many of them do it just for fun. Would I like to go to outer space and see the truth? Of course, I think that deep inside everybody would like to see earth from distance. Is it important for me to know whether Earth is flat or not? Not really, but if something is scientifically proven, I would like to see, that all people in the world believe this.
I think that theory about "Flat earth" born by people that have very poor knowledge about world especially physics (or they missed a lot of classes in school). The easiest way to find out form of earth is to lunch Meteoron with cam and you will see all on your eyes.
Illia Shynder said…
In my opinion, whole flat earth society is just a prank that went out of control, and then some not that smart people started supporting this theory just because for them it looked as logical(or even more logical) as round earth. I definitely would like to go space to confirm the theory of round earth just because I know that and I have no doubts. But, I would like to go to the outer space just for fun)
I think it's not really that important piece of knowledge. The only reason why you can need this knowledge is to pass some geography exam. Or to know, that you can flight or seal from Australia to Argentina without crossing whole Eurasia.
1. Never doubted that eartk is flat... Jk jk, pretty sure its round. The whole thing doesnt make any sense. There is not even 1 good argument that would proove or at list convice me that earth is disk-shaped, there is no gravity? What so how different objects have different weights and falls with different acceleration, how about horisont etc. giroscope etc. Its just stupid.
2. Hell yea i would, who wouldnt go into space right now. It would be such an awesome jurnay.
3. In my opinion it is quite important even if its only for your common knowledge.
Marcin Górski said…
I don't believe that people still thinks that Earth is flat. Seriously?
Would I like to go to outer space and see the truth? No, of course! A lot of people has proven that Earth is round and that's enough. It's very dangerous and I would prefer to stay at home :)
It's hard to say but ok... it's quite important for me but only for common knowledge. It didn't change anything in my life but it's good to know about that.
Unknown said…
I believe that the earth is round. I believe that the information about the earth is real. A good example is eg. As I am at the seaside and look straight ahead I see a slight rounding.

I don't know. This is a big change. I don't know if I would like to go to another country. A flight in komsos is a different scale.

It isn't important. But it's great to know where I live.

1. Why do you think that the Earth is flat or round?
When I was a little kid I was tought that the Earth is round, therefore this idea is deep inside me and it constantly rejects any others. Nevertheless, after some significant analysis whether the Earth is flat or round, I am more than sure more convinced that our planet is round.

2. Would you like to go into outer space to make sure that your theory is right? If so, how would you convince the others?
Definitely! I would love to travel into outer space and make some selfies with the round Earth. I think that more than few people would say it is photoshopped, so a live stream should make a deal.

3. Is it important for you to know whether the Earth is flat or round? What does it mean to you?
Yes, I find it crucial to know the basics of the world we are living in. The shape of our home in this galaxy is just one of them, as well as the nearest planets and whether we can find some water on them or not.
Unknown said…
Well, there are no logical nor scientific evidence, that the Earth if flat. And if there are NASA's (and others) people guarding the edge of the disk... Then how many people are required to maintain this whole system? And how costly it would be for them? Any flatearthers argument is not valid for me.

I would not try to convince them to round Earth fact any way. Just because they believe it as much as some people believe in God. And as God's existence could not be proven or deny by the science, the Earth roundness can and it is proven. But flatearthers would deny it event if being in the outer space and seeing Earth from there.

Well, for me it's not so important for everyday basis if the Earth is round, except when in a long distance plane (when the roundness and direction is important for this). I just live with the knowledge that this is the fact.
Unknown said…
I think that because we can see it from space and we have more facts to prove it. For me the knowledge of the sciencists is enough to belive them.
I think that i don't have to go into outer space because of them. In fact, even if i'm wrong that change nothing in my life.

1.Why do you think that the Earth is flat or round?
Of course, Earth is flat. There is so much facts proving this.
The horizon always rises to meet your eye level never no matter how high in altitude you go. Even at 20 miles up the horizon rises to meet the observer/camera. This is only physically possible if the earth is a huge "endless" flat plane.
The sun is much closer than we have been told. It is, in fact, in our atmosphere. You can clearly see that it is not 93 million miles away. Many times you can see the sun's rays shooting out of a cloud forming a triangle. If you follow the rays to their source it will always lead to a place above the clouds.

2.Would you like to go into outer space to make sure that your theory is right? If so, how would you convince the others?
Yes, I do. I'll take photos, there 2018 out there.

3.Is it important for you to know whether the Earth is flat or round? What does it mean to you?
It means nothing, but it's funny!
Earth is round. It is there are plenty of scientific explanations, i belive that people who thinks that earth is flat are not well educated. We've seen a lot of pictures from space where Earth is definatelly round. Personally i think that "flat earth" is just some sort of provocation not real belief.
Yes, as a kid I dreamed of being astronaut. If I would be given possibility to go int outer space I'll definatelly use it ! I don't know, i think if some people don't want to belive they wouldn't change their minds even if they see it with theirs own eyes. I think this question is unnecessary because (I hope) all people studing in our college know that Earth is ROUND.
Unknown said…
Following today's events I just couldn't convince myself Earth is flat. Flaters try it hard though.

No. I would rather go there to see our planet and experience how it is to go to space or to the orbit. I would never make it my life goal...

Well, the physics we have at the moment suits me well, I don't want to change that. I like gravity.

Lets get ready for a science lesson!
All the floods in Poland have really got me thinkinhg about how many people still think that the Earth is round. I will prove them wrong. Here comes the science - Are You ready for experiment? Take a glass of water and normal lemon(similar shape to Earth), now when You pour water (like it's raining), the water just fall of the lemon. Now if the Earth was round, how the Poland was flooded if the water will just travel around the ball? It doesnt make sence. Now take the plate, the flat plate - if you pour the water on to the plate - intresting, as You can see the water pools up. Thats the ultimate proof. Try me.

I just convinced You by the science, I don't need photos. Photos can be easly photoshoped. The shape of the earth don't mean nothing to me ;)

Why do you think that the Earth is flat or round?
This subject is a fact not an object to discuss. The earth is round.
Would you like to go into outer space to make sure that your theory is right? If so,  how would you convince the others?
I do not want to convince any one, people are different. If someone wants to believe in spaghetti monster, why not.
Is it important for you to know whether the Earth is flat or round? What does it mean to you?
Probably that everything that we see is built in our brain, the emptiness in atoms is so big that we have to go thru them, but we don’t. We have model of everything in ours brain, if that model will be as accurate as needed to predict correct behaviour, then it is enough. For example to calculate the shortest way to fly from one country to other.
Jakub Lisicki said…
It isn't fair to assume that any of the beliefs are right or wrong, without taking time to prove them. So far, I've never doubted that the Earth is round as the argument backing up this theorem seem really logical. For the ones that have any doubts about that, I recommend to watch the series called "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" by Neil deGrasse Tyson. He devoted most of his life to research about astrophysics and I don't doubt his knowledge about our planet.
I wouldn't want to spend time on proving myself something that I consider as a fact and neither waste my time on convincing people who wouldn't believe my anyway. Some people wouldn't believe it just for the sake of "thinking different".
It's not as important to me as it would seem. I would feel really weird though if one of the first facts about our planet that I've ever learnt wasn't true.
1.Why do i believe in scientifically proven fact about earth? Because its been proven countless times, by many people and in many ages. Whats more i think that whoever thinks that earth is flat is either mentally ill or tries to direct everybodys attention onto him by denying facts we all should know are true, oh wait that would be mentally ill too. Flat Earther should be a synonym to mentally ill.
2.No i would not travel into outer space just to see "round" earth with my very eyes, anybody who would is dumb. There are many more things worth seeing in cosmos than round earth, hell there are many more reasons to travel into cosmos. Travelling to outer space for this reason alone would be a waste.
3.It is not important for me, nor its necessary for me to live my life in most cases, but its is necessary for me to know if people i meet that i might possibly rely on are of healthy mind.?
Your idea is really easy and smart. But what would happen if your livestream was hacked by someone?
I think that you rely on facts a lot. Why don't you want to prove something on your own?
To my mind the fact that their theories constitute a threat to the society is the worst. Why others should suffer.

Round. I could go into outer space to check if Earth is round or flat or any other form that you can think of. However i know that i wouldn't convince the other, because for flat earthers i would work for government and for every other person i would just be an idiot. Well sure, i would like to know if earth is actually flat and if so, why anybody would cover that up. But for know i will keep enjoying memes about flat earthers.
Truth be told I like Terry Pratchett's idea more as well. It seems more realistic to me than flat earth

The knowledge came to me when I was a very young boy and it was putted in to my mind by the people which surrounded me that days and until now I can't find an ability to disprove it.

Sure, I'd love to do it! I would not try to convince anyone or share it, I'd be just mine. haha

Of course it is, I don't want to fell down one day.
What would you like to see in space then?(if you want to make sure that the Earth is round)

1.Why do you think that the Earth is flat or round?
I have no doubt that Eearth is round, For me it's just obvious.
2.Would you like to go into outer space to make sure that your theory is right? If so, how would you convince the others?
No, becuase of point number 1.
3.Is it important for you to know whether the Earth is flat or round? What does it mean to you?
For me it's absolutely irrelevant. Why? Supposedly even if Earth is flat, what does it change? Nothing.
Does it show how the humanity has developed? People used to believe in Terry Pratchett's idea for years and now most people don't even think about such primitive theories.
That's right, the religion always slows down human advancement in science and technology.
I am just wondering how the fact that you traveled a bit is connected with your conviction that the Earth is round? :)
That's the biggest question how to make people trust you. I have no idea how would I convince even my friends that the Earth is flat if it were so
I would say that the best proof that the Earth is round is the Wi-Fi signal icon.
But why you are so convinced that the Earth is round if you didn't even think about this topic?
If you always think about the particular part you operate on you will never see the whole picture of it. You should be a human not a programmer.
I don't think that taking a picture of the Earth is a good idea. Using modern technologies you can achieve this result easily
I most likely believe that the Earth is flat but anyways thanks for useful links. I just wanted to show another point of view on obvious things.
That sounds pretty smart not to waste your time on what is already proven and of course it is not so easy to prove it
Honestly, I've never doubted that the Earth is spherical. Since elementary school physics lessons are presented evidence that the Earth is round. Of course, I would like to go into space, but not only to confirm this belief. There are many photos of Earth from space and I do not believe in conspiracy to mislead people in this area. For my daily life, it does not matter if the Earth is round or flat. It would only be a major demolition of the worldview if it turned out that the Earth is flat.
There is a biblical text that actually says that the Earth is round and hangs over nothing.
IIf it was true that the Earth is flat no one would need to find the edge and cliffhang in order to find out. The world would actually dry out, since, in the case of a flat world all the water will slip away by streaming off the edge; or is it gravity that keeps it restrained here on Earth? As far as anyone is concerned, flat Earth believers don't think gravity is real and perhaps Danold Trump's forefathers build a wall around the edge to contain the water.
Unknown said…
I think that earth is round because there is so many evidence that it is really hard to disagree with it. The technology went so far that we can even see pictures of our earth so why we should believe differently? To be honest, I wouldn't go for it does not have any sense. It would change nothing in my life. It would be interesting for sure but without any sense. For me it is not important. As I said before this information would bring nothing into my life. Whether earth is flat or round it is just the information important for scientist and space lovers.

There is too many videos, documents, calculations and other profs, so I'm pretty convinced that the Earth is round.

I'd love to go into outer space just for my curiosity of the external world. I will try to do as many as I can photo to document everything and try to convince other with these photos.

It doesn't bother me that much now. But as I said I would be really reallyyy surprised it all of that would be a specially prepared lied by all governments or any other prominent organisations.

Well, I’m pretty sure that the earth is round. I mean - why should I think it’s flat? It’s kinda unreal for me.
I believe all the reasons given to us, that it’s round, but if I were given an opportunity - yes, of course I will travel to outer space.
No, it’s not important to me at all.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
