Week 11 [15.01.2018 - 21.01.2018] Wireless charging for mobile phones

Wireless charging for mobile phones

Chargins a smartphone is associated with cables, but it is not the only option.
The induction phenomenon allows the energy to be supplied to the battery wirelessly. How to
charge the phone like that? You will find it out in this presentation.

The Wireless Power Consortium is the universal, actually the only one worth noting the
wireless charging standard. It is the entity developing and promoting the Qi standard which is
already commonly known. Yet, few years ago we heard about the efforts of A4WP (Qualcomm
and Samsung), where the method of magnetic resonance charging was used. PMA, however,
dealt with electromagnetic induction.

How does wireless charging work? Qi standard

The essence of this method lies wireless charger that has to be plugged in the power source
and put on a desk, for example. It is equipped with a coil, which is responsible for generating
the appropriate electromagnetic field. It works similarly on the principle of fluorescent lighting
near high voltage lines - heavy cables through which electricity with huge voltage flows are a
source of strong electromagnetic field. The electric charge "accumulates" in the air, which is
induced to its receiver ( in the case of a fluorescent lamp - neon or argon), thanks to which,
standing directly under the transmission line, we obtain a "free glow".

In the phone, we have another coil, which by the induction receives energy from the generated
magnetic field and it is converted directly to the current flowing straight to the battery. Of
course, the phone must comply with the accepted standard, which is expressed through
certification and the use of a suitable coil, and systems responsible for receiving energy in this
way.

Wireless charging is conventient, but only in a few applications

Wireless charging of mobile phones is associated with a loss of energy as a result of
transforming the current into an electromagnetic field. If it was possible to charge devices over
long distances, the losses would be so large that it would not be profitable any more. Therefore
it is possible only after applying the device to a special induction hob. Only in its area
compatible with the standard the device will start the charging procedure .Therefore, a certain
limitation is that the phone whose battery is replenished is a wireless way, rather, we can not
use. Strictly speaking - we can, but this process will be interrupted

If the disadventages of wireless charging do not discourage you - trying this solution is highly
recommended.

Ideally, if there is an induction plate integrated with the smartphone shelf in the car. But yes
not only this scenario of using wireless charging is convenient. As well, this charger can be
placed on a desk or on the bedside table. If the noticeably longer charging time and less
convenience are not discouraging - it is worth a try.

For me wireless charger is a gadget not something necessary. It would be nice to put your phone on the device at home, but when traveling it certainly would be very inconvenient. Wireless charger and phone should be in a close proximity for them to work, usually this means that surfaces of both devices must touch each other. I think I would buy induction charger but only to use it at home. There is also one thing that discourages me, mainly speaking the price. I’m going to wait for price to drop to acceptable ranges and then buy it.

To be honest, I think that it's great idea but I don't see it as something super useful. I rather consider it as some kind of gadget or really small facility that I don't have to look for my cable to charge my phone. But whether I use wireless charging or normal I have to put mu phone in one place and on the other hand while charging wirelessly there is some kind of problem. For exmaple in some phones charging in 80-100% is important and it shouldn't be interrupted. When you charge your phone in modern way you simply can't answer the call in some cases :)
Marcin Mróz said…
I have no experience with wireless charging, but I don't think it is something very useful. Both in normal and wireless charging you have some limitations of moves with the phone. I guess that in second case you are limited even more because your phone has to lie strictly on induction charger. Maybe if wireless charger was more powerful, I would consider buying it, but in this situation I'd stick with normal one.
In my opinion it is more gadget for tech freaks than something useful. Usually technology that uses wires is more effective, so I do not know what will happened to wireless chargers. In cases where speed matters, wireless technology looses at it will probably stay that way. On the other hand, chargers like ones shown in the article might be used in public transport.
Yes I think the wireless charging is useful. I like the idea of charging multiple
devices at once. I would buy an induction charger especially one for multiple devices. I guess it would be cool if it would charge faster :)
Unknown said…
I think that wireless charges will be very useful in future, after they will be improved a little. For example when you can charge your phone or laptop or anything else by using only one charge and it won't be required to put it somewhere, so you could use it while charging.
Unknown said…
I think that wireless charging is useful and functional. I really like wireless devices because it looks so much better when you don't have a cables around a house. I am thinking about a induction charger and one day I certainly will buy one. I don't know how to improve wireless charging and if I had known I would have been a very rich person in very short period of time.
Wireless charging is an extra, not a mandatory thing. I really couldn't care less whether I'm connecting my device with a power cable, or putting it on special "dock" connected with that power cable anyway. I think that powerbanks are far more important and actually beneficial, while wireless charging is more like an extra, not something life-changing. I definitely don't miss it.
Maciej Główka said…
I think wireless charging might be useful. With every device we get extra cable we have to keep somewhere. Wireless charging helps us with that problem. Unfortunately, as far as I know, wireless chargers are still quite expensive. I will buy one in few years, when their price will be lower and my phone will support it.
Unknown said…
I think that wireless charging is really comfortable. Imagine wireless chargers built in the elegant table lamps in cafes. When it gets really popular, you won't need to care about about your charger anymore. I'm thinking about buying wireless charger, because I have a phone that supports it. Wireless charging can be improve in field of efficiency and safety. Also batteries need some improvements, because we can often hear about problems with safety e.g. detonating or getting on fire.
Unknown said…
I think wireless charging is useful, but maybe 2 months ago I saw the first prototype of wireless charging and he was charging at a distance of 2 meters. But now, mobiles wireless charging work only to put on the charge station.
I would not buy induction charger(in the development).
I don't know how to be improved :)

I love gadgets and this one can be my favorite! :P
In my opinion wireless charging is very useful but It can be very expensive in Poland. It's the easiest way to charge our devices. I hate my phone cable because I always forget about that!
I would like to buy induction charger but firstly... I need to buy device which can be charged by that :P
About last question? I don't know how wireless charging could be improved. It's hard to say.
Its really usefull not only is convinient for us just to have set space to place our phones on desk, basically we can develop a habit of placing it there with that habit we will have easier time finding our phones either its there and charging or its in my pocket. Next thing is cable management and wear , while u have stationary charging pod u dont wear out your cable as much as plugging and unplugging your phone every now and then (same goes for charging port on the phone).
I would do so if my phone had supported it.

Improvement of wireless charging will come with its popularity i believe that it could be improved in interchangeability area one wirelesses pad or dock for every major gadget u use.

In my opinion induction charger is good way. But I think now it have more minuses. For exapmle new Iphone x or 8 have induction charging but you must buy this kind of charger. This apple charger costs 999 zł. This is a joke. But apple tell us that you can change in the same moment 3 devices, iphone, smartwatch and wireless headphones. But problem is that this is a new gadget and headphones now don't have a case with induction charger. Next problem is this charging take a lot of time. But they tell us that we can have one charger and no cable clutter. Personally I have Iphone 8 plus and I must charge it more than 4 hours.
Unknown said…
I reckon an induction charger is very useful and convenient, especially for busy people, who have to move all the time. However, I would not buy it because of its high price. To my way of thinking, the distance of using should be improved.
Unknown said…
I think that it is useful, my sister have wireless charger and she really like this solution. Of course i know that now it isn't so good as it should be or as we think when we thinking abut wireless but for sure it's nice option.
If i know that my phone will be compatible with this charger for sure i will buy it.
When i think about how this charger should be improved i think about charging speed but i'm not sure if it's major diffrence between the charging a standard charger and wireless. I rather think taht we should wait for adapt our phones to wireless charging options.

I think thats a good technology, but I guess it would be
cost-effective only in about 5 years or even more, everything depends on the world trends, for example, nowadays the most famous world trend in programming is machine-learning and making AI. So if people would start investing in wireless charging system it we would have them way faster than I expect.

I do think that wireless charging is very useful. It has a lot of uses, for example, wireless medical devices.

I'm not one of Thomas Edison haters, but I do think that we would have a more efficient energy system if Tesla's ideas were persuaded instead of Edison's. Tesla pioneered the wireless electricity research using the findings of earlier scientists like Ørsted and Faraday. He built what is now known as Tesla coil that uses sparks to create high voltages and radio waves to carry the magnetic field. Using this Tesla coil he could wireless light up a bulb from across the room.

The wireless charging technology could be improved by building larger coils. We could charge our devices just by entering our houses.
Jakub Lisicki said…
I don't think that it's something particularly useful. It's convenient only if it stays in the same place forever. Just imagine having to use it during the travel - it would probably become even more inconvenient than it is already.
I probably wouldn't buy it now, it's too expensive for a think that I can totally live without. It's not perfect in the current state and I doubt that it will ever be.
The thing that could encourage me to buy such charger would probably be a price drop. It would be nice to have something like that on the desk, but then again - not for the current price.

I consider wireless charging as a cool feature. My smartphone supports it but I've never used it before. I think it might be usefull for me at work, but it's quite expensive gadget. I would love to see wireless charging for longer distances. It would be cool to charge our smartphones everywhere in our houses.
In my opinion it is more than useful. It is a really good thing to make our life easier. I would buy this charger, but they need to be tested first with different kind of phones. It can be used everywhere, make it like an invisible point on the table in cafes, on the benches in the parks and so on.
Wireless charging can be useful, because you do not use the port in the phone and it can survive longer :P. I would not buy it as a standalone product, because I think about it more as a gadget. As for improvement, maybe Tesla could implement, that phones charges when you are inside the car, that could be kinda cool.

Personally I think wireless charging can be useful, my phone supports is, but I don't have wireless charger. My standart charger supports "fast charging" and has long cabel - it's perfect for me.
One thing, that can be improved it's basically speed of charging.
I used in in my S6 and Blackberry Q20 (the QI version) from the start. At the start I was very euphoric that I could just put the phone on the mat and it was charging. After that I saw that my phone is charging very slowly comparing to traditional charger (two and half times slower). The worst part was when I was using a case for my phone. Case was one sided and quite thin but charging stopped a lot after few minutes of it (despite in the manual it should work for up to 5 mm of gap between the phone). So QI is really cool feature but I am using it quite rare right now because of it's cons.

Do you think wireless charging is useful?
I think is useful, it could be using in place whew we put our smartphones usually like in car, office desk, night table etc.
Would you buy an inuction charger?
I would prefer that kind of charger that could be stick to a furniture, and take small amounts of place.
How wireless charging could be improved?
There a many ways to improve that, for example size, energy efficiency.
Unknown said…
I bet Nikola Tesla would agree that wireless charging is useful and great ;) He could have improved it though by adding more range and less energy loss. As for now it would be useful for me to put a phone on the desk and charge it that way but otherwise not so much. Interesting article, thanks for it, learned few things.

It's called wireless when it isn't. I mean, you have to plug the doc-station to the power anyway - you have to use a wire. And you also cannot use your phone while charging. Speaking of iPhone X, I was surprised when they made the wireless charging and at the same time unlocking with a face. These two things are controversial.
I also like wireless mice and headphones, but it's annoying when it comes to charging. And they can stop working at any time.

I think wireless charging can be very useful. Charging the phone or even the car will be much easier without the possibility of damaging the socket. This will allow you to safely load and lessen sensitive plugins.
For me wireless charging is a cool feature but it's not so useful right now.
I wouldn't buy an inuction charger now, but maybe I would by it when te technology will be improved.
Wireless charging can be improved by inreasing the speed of charging.
Tomasz Morawski said…
I believe it's quite nice technology but it's still not advanced enough to be useful right now. Unfortunately, the charging time is too long for most of people but I think it'll be much faster in near future.
I don't think I will. I don't have smartphone which can be charged by wireless charger and it's not comfortable to use phone while charging with one.
I believe the first thing that needs to be improved is speed of charging.
I think that wireless charging is very useful and cool gadget but I don’t think of it as a necessity. It’s like a cool feature, but it wouldn’t really matter if I had to choose a phone. I think that some time in a future I might consider buying a wireless charger but for now I don’t need it.
Unknown said…
In my opinion, wireless charging has the potential of being useful for most electronics but will only be a gadget until it starts being offered widely. For now many of us use wireless charging (a very basic variant) for charging their electrical toothbrush, which is convenient as it has to be waterproof. This would also be very convenient while building extremely waterproof phones/tablets, I guess. But apart from that, it would only make sense if used in nearly all electrical devices. Imagine a wireless charging desk, that would give power to, lets say, the phone you put there, the tablet, but also the PC, the monitor, the keyboard and the mouse, the speakers and also the desktop lamp. This way, only having one power cable would be super convenient. Until it is used that widely, it's just a gimmick unfortunately, and I would not pursue buying a device that has it.
Unknown said…
I think wireless charging is useless. For whom it can be a problem to plug the charger in? I don't see any more usages of such wireless charger. Altough I would buy induction charger, just to see the magic that it presents. I like to see new things in action. I think wireless chargning could be improved to be real "wireless" charger. I mean such wireless that the phone could be in any place in the room and it would be still charging.
Wireless charging is one of the best things made last year. I got 1 charger in home and second in a car so i can just put it there while not using it and dont have to worry about cables. That is super usefull in a car as its not interfering with shifter.

I don't find wireless charging useful. I think plugging the charger in is not a problem, so I wouldn't use it and therefore I wouldn't buy such charger.
1. Like everything wireless, such charging is not generally necessary, but it can be useful. I mean we can do without it, but it can make our life easier. If it works well, of course.
2. At the moment I don’t need this, so I wouldn’t.
3. I have no idea, in particular, but generally it should work indefectibly so as we could rely on this. I guess more popular it is, more quality in working shall be achieved. Wireless tools and processes are our future, that’s for sure.
I'm not sure about my attitude to wireless charging. I already have a second phone with the ability to charge without a wire, but still did not need to use this feature. Perhaps it is more convenient, do not tear and do not corrupt the wires. But I almost always use the phone while it's charging. If it will be lying in one place during charging, it will be uncomfortable for me. Thanks to the author for the article.
It's a nice toy for people who absolutely despise cables, but I don't see it replacing regular chargers. Not unless it can provide something regular chargers can't, like better charging speeds or lower power costs, which doesn't really seem likely.

The technology itself might however have some interesting applications for short range data transfer. If you encode enough data into the coil power fluctuations, to achieve some decent transfer speed, the phone could load its battery and exchange data at the same time. I know we already have Wi-Fi and USB cables for that, but this could allow short distance undetectable (unlike radio wave base technologies) data transfer, so maybe some espionage applications :D

I've bought new phone with wireless charging capabilities few month ago and haven't had wireless charging pad for first month of using the phone and it was quick but not that I got any benefits from then other then notion that it's quick. After a month of use and a lot of time put in researched finally bought wireless charging dock and was satisfied with it. It take more time to charge the phone but the convenience of day to day use for sure overcome all minuses.
Yes in general i think it's a great idea. I imagine how many people actually would love this type of charging. Sometimes, i'm really angry at my standard charger when i'm getting tangled in the cable. Would i buy it? It depends on the prize. This type of device is not a must have for me. Wireless charging could be faster than it is at current state.
I guess wireless charging is really cool stuff for all of us, in case we all prefer to carry our phone battery charge will be really nice if this technology will be integrated into all public places so we can just take a sit somewhere and recharge our device.

I think wireless charging is useful. It makes life easier. Cables are always messy and there are plenty of them. Wireless charger in my opinion is really cool equipment! Unfortunately my smartphone don't have charger like this. I think if I could, I would buy such a charger for my smartphone.
I hope that in the future companies will developed not only "fast charge" system but also "low charge". In my opinion it will improve the battery life.
Unknown said…
I'd definitely buy an induction charger if the technology improves a bit and they get faster. My phone has a pretty big battery and from what I've heard it would take a very long time to fill it up that way.
I can't help to think if it's possible to have a charger that would work when I move around the house with my phone in my pocket without any side effects. I think that Nicola Tesla worked on something that could've helped. Too bad he died before finishing his work.
Unknown said…
For me wireless charging is such a great technology. I have a lot of issues with my cables which are getting destroyed because of exploitation. I definitly would buy induction charger because of above reason. If you ask me how wireless charging could be improved then in my opinion speed of charging should be increased.
Unknown said…
It’s a cool gadget, but I don’t think it’s something necessary for me. It can be useful in cars. You can just place your phone in the right place and that’s it - it’s charging. On the other hand, when someone is calling you and you pick up the phone, you interrupt the charging process. I heard that is not good for your battery life.
Unknown said…
I think that wireless charger are natural succession, as there is trend for wireless. I think that this is useful - there are problems with wires, that they can easily get broken, there is a risk while putting it in socket, so it is safer.
I think that as for now I wouldn't, because it is quite expensive and I've got a phone with long lasting battery, so charging a phone at night, while I'm sleeping is not a problem. But I would buy it as a present, because it is useful and technical good.
Of course it may be improved and it definitely will. Maybe charging surfaces will be bigger, as worktop, so while chopping an onion your phone will be charging?
Wojtek Protasik said…
It useful as it eliminates the wiring :). However mobile devices can be damaged when using while charging and when interrupted.
One place I could think of right now is my desk, I would use a spot for charging my phone.
Unknown said…
The idea of wireless charger is interesting for me. You could charge all your devices at the same time and finally that would be the end for the broken wires:D really, I am fed up with buying the new wires. The only question - is it ok for our health to be close to such charger? I don't know, I am not sure, but in my opinion, all these innovative devices could be harmful for us. But I hope that I am wrong. Because I think I need that cool thing. If I am right, still ok - I would just use the scotch-tape for my wires..
As a user of it, I can say that wireless charging is good enough if you are charging your device during night hours and you can manage it with your voice, because when it comes to usage of a device while it is charging with a QI charger, It is really inconvenient to charge it.
Wojtek Kania said…
I am owner of wireless charger and I admit that is very useful. I think the end of the project 'wirleless charger' will come when we will be charging wireless our cars, maybe on the road :)
Unknown said…
Wireless phone charging is an additional feature. This is a good addition but not all phones can be charged wirelessly. Sometimes it would be great for the phone to load itself when it is on the table and I dont use it. I would gladly buy a wireless charger. It would be interesting that there would be other wireless solutions:computer, light.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
