Week 11 [15.01.2018 - 21.01.2018] Displays instead of physical buttons

Not so far ago, modern cars used to have one display in the middle of the dashboard, which was the home for navigation, board computer, air conditioning and many other different things. With every generation of cars it was becoming bigger and bigger.

This is how it looked like in 2004 BMW.

As you can see in the picture above, beside the display there were a lot of physical buttons which were covering functionalities we use the most. Changing temperature, radio station, seat heating, volume was possible without looking on the interface. Thanks to this we were always able to observe the road and use our touch sensors(fingers ;-) ) to find proper button and press it.

After some time displays became touchscreens, buttons were disappearing. Car manufacturers started installing trackpads and removing knobs. Not only menus became more complex but also the only way to navigate through them were touchscreens. This means that in order to change some settings we have to stop the car, because we have to look at the screen in order to see where is the digital button displayed and if the screen registered out touch and clicked it. Here is how number of physical buttons is reduced, to the point where we have to use touchscreen to set the temperature.

2014 Peugeot 308 There are only 5 buttons left on a central console
2014 Peugeot 308 Air conditioning interface

Clearly I'm not the biggest fan of putting everything into touchscreens. It is not only because of the safety issue I mentioned above. Once all those screens are turned off, we all know what they look like.

Fingerprints are real!
Neither of these issues stopped car manufacturers for adding more screens into their products. Let me present you one of recently shown cars - Range Rover Velar. It has three big displays, two of them are touch screens. Imagine all those fingerprints. A lot of car journalists criticise this idea.

2017 Range Rover Velar
So far there is company which took even one more step towards digitalizing their car. Audi presented their flagship, A8 which has one display, two touch screens, electronic buttons with haptic feedback and tablet for the rear passengers. Audi decided to declare war on conventional buttons and even hazards are activated through virtual button. If you are interested in more details about how its interior look like here is video showing all features of new Audi.
Questions:
1. Do you prefer buttons or displays?
2. What is your favourite tool to navigate through media in car? Knobs, trackpad, buttons, voice commands or touchscreens?
3. Do you think that touchscreens compromise road safety?
4. Should using touchscreens during driving be illegal just as using smartphone?

I think that the best combination for me is display but with buttons. Display is always a good way to show all information but to control system in cars physical buttons are the best. If you have touchscreen, there are fingerprints everywhere and you may have difficulties to see anything. On the other hand in my opinion, using touchscreen whilst driving is not safe. I prefer to use physical knobs, buttons etc because I don't have to look on it. I just know where it is and point my hand there.

I've never thought about it, but I agree with you. It's easier to press the button, especially after driving the car for a while and getting used to it.
It depends. If I want to open the window, I would like to press the button. But with maps, the touchscreens surely win.
It's won't be illegal to use touchscreens because they are mounted in the car. I mean, it would be strange. And difficult to implement.
But people love touchscreens. They have become an integral part of our lives. Few people use devices with buttons. So, what do you think displays in cars should look like?
Actually it depends when it comes to answering first question. Mostly I prefer display buttons, but there are situations that I can not think that real buttons will be replaced, for example:
- keyboards,
- most game pads
Also I hate using my phone display keyboard during winter - despite having special gloves, that does not work as should have.
I do not have favourite navigate tool at car. I think the most important part is logic and UX design. Same as it comes to road safety - not media, but design.
While driving we should focus on road, but when we are for example at the traffic jam, I do not find anything evil when someone is searching for the right radio station or setting up gps.

The best would be a combination of buttons and displays, while driving you should be able to control your car without looking at the display but at the same time expect some convenience and adjustability. Personally I like using knobs but also enjoy ease and variety of options provided by touchscreens. Touchscreens do not provide safety in fact they are significant distractor on the road, that is why dashboards should be as simple as possible. However this cannot be the reason make them illegal, it would be better if countries created some regulations regarding the size and content of electronic displays.
Actually I like the combination of both. I like the big touch screen for navigation, back cameras and all of the advanced settings. I can’t get used to the idea of changing temperature or radio volume using the display though. I do that without taking my eyes of the road and I can’t imagine stopping a car just to lower the temperature. I guess that you set up your display so you have all of your most used features easily accessible. Even though I think it does compromise road safety and shouldn’t be overused while driving.

Actually I prefer touchscreens. They've become more useful for me. Actually I'm trying not to disturb myself while driving, but if I had to I would chose voice commands, they're the safest in my opinion. I don't think touch screens provide any safety while driving, in my opinion they should be illegal as smartphones are.

I prefer buttons because they are more convinient and of course because of safety. It's okay to use touchscreens if you don't look at them, but as soon as they need your attention - driving become unsafe. No matter how good you are at driving, multitasking it's always hard. And one little mistake could cost you or someone else life.
I don't know if there is such possibility, but soon or later someone will start install games on this computers, or show films, funny videos and so on. But maybe I'm too pessimistic and it won't happen, who knows...

I usually prefer displays and touchscreens in most of my electrical devices but in a cars I think that a combination of big main display screen and buttons for sterring is more convenient solution. Like I already mentioned I prefer buttons to navigate through media in car. I really like simplicity and well minded design. I agree with you that using touchscreens durign driving a car can be dangerous and I feel that it is simillar danger like driving and texting in the same time and it is reason why car manufactures shouldn't exaggerate with creating cars with touchscreens.

Recently, I've seen a commercial of new Kia Stinger and I was suprised with its kind of protruding display. I wondered whether it wouldn't get in a way with our view of a road. I think that big displays or touchscreens are cool, but they shouldn't catch our attention while driving. Technology develops really fast nowadays and we won't escape from it, but in case of cars everything should be held in a good, safe manner. In my opinion combination of touch screens and buttons is the best options. It would be better if some car features were available with just a click of a button not by sliding or performing some gestures on touch screen.
Displays are cool. It's not only because of the technology itself, but the fact that they're much more flexible and can adapt to changing world, for example in a firmware update. We might receive updated functionality, total overhaul of the GUI or crucial fixes without having a need of hardware change. So yes, displays all the way.

It's hard to answer because I don't own a car, however I like more classic knobs and buttons.
I think that every kind of buttons takes our attention especially this touchscreens. I may look a bit weird for you, but actually I think that a car is safe, when it's not filled with useless screens and touchpads. Moreover, it would be great when it was banned by law. I mean all kinds of screens, which catch our eyes.

In my opinion some car features like hazard lights or climate control should always be controlled with buttons. Those are basic elements in car and you should be able to use them quickly every time you need it. With touchscreen, you have to see what you are touching, and that means for that moment you are not looking on the road. Of course, touchscreens look modern and cool. That's why I prefer when you use touchscreens for radio, selecting seat massage etc. and there is also button panel with climate control, hazard lights.

Prefer button cuz if you broke a display, I don't know how you will be using ...
But I don't know what to say about this post cuz I don't have own a car. I think will be better if inside a car will be sensors. Security its first. And yes, how I said before, will be better if I have a button display than a touchscreen.

Touchscreens are very useful because they can save a lot fo space in the car and you can program it the way you want and you are not limited by the space. For me many buttons inside the car is distracting.
However in the new Audi A8 there is no longer a physical emergency button (the red triangle). They have created a display button. Personally I don't trust things with a screen to interact. I would leave at least this one mechanical button to be sure that in emergency I will be able to press it and it will work.
I prefer neither a combination of both is what makes great design.
All i need is previous /next buttons on steering wheel. And a sturdy volume knob to go with it on the main console.
I do believe that touchscreens can be more intuitive and faster to operate in some cases i would not call them a safety compromising feature although what im highly agains are displays as speed guages -> thats the one feature i wish would stay oldschool.
What a stupid question next thing u will want to ban listening to music in a car. Why would be operating your car in most cases become illegal ?
Marcin Górski said…
It depends... Displays are better to show car informations (status, tyre puncture etc.) but buttons are better to control other functionalities for me. If I had I would chose buttons. If you know where is the switch placed, you can simply use it. Voice commands sounds great but I have never used it and I don't know anything about that.
I think that touchscreens should be not available during driving. It's very distracting - the same situation as with smartphone.

Personally I prefer buttons but I like screen in car without touch option. I know that today all cars have screen but touchscreen works strange. It never works like buttons. We should choose what we want to use. This is solution to the problem. I know that there is this option in the BMW.
In my opinion a car with screen looks much better than without. I think that most people agree with me.
I prefer knobs in the middle of the car. But this options is available in high class. As regards voice commands it is a total failure. I have never seen voice commands working well in car . I think about why cars company put this in the car. When I tell navigation where I want to go suddenly the car calls my girlfriend.
I've always wondered why when I use phone navigation it is bad and this is against the law but when I use car navigation it is in accordance to the law. I know that car navi is hight and in the middle but sometimes when I use phone I hold it high above the wheel. This is the same when you use it like that.
I think that the best way is When you have the opportunity to use car navi and mutimedia where the are automotive clocks/counter then you look ahead all the time.
I know new cars have good option where you can connect your smartphone with car. I think that it solves most problems

For me it;s better to have a physical buttons. I feel feedback from the computer that i achived the intended goal.
My favourite tool in the car are buttons to control the radio on the steering wheel. It really helps me because always use bluetooth to play my music from Spotify. It's more comfortabe.
In my opinion touchscreens need more concentration and focus on it. I think that it isn't more safety than buttons for ex.
For the last question i don't have answer. I use my phone when i'm driving sometimes. Maybe it's bad and i try to stop it but i see many similarities between phons and touchscreens.

Touchscreens in the cars are a natural consequence of touchscreen technology development.
I do not think placing only touchscreens is a really well thought out solution (except for the cars and devices manufacturers' earnings). As you mentioned, they cause more probability of road accidents and they make a car less robust (the screens and devices are easier to break and when they break the cost of their repair is higher). Touchscreens are placed in the cars as a result of general trend of the computerization of the cars. It used to be that when your car broke, you could repair it yourself. Now in some cases you need an authorized garage that has software and connection to the manufacturer's servers. It is exactly a reason why I dislike modern cars.

I think soon using touchscreens will not need to be illegal, because we will have self-driving cars on the roads (not that I'm thrilled with that either).

1. For meit doesn't matter. Of course buttons are better because one can touch them and feel the movement of such which sometimes prevents acidental actions but on the other hand the display takes much less place.
2. As i have said above it makes me no difference what i'm using and so i don't have a favourite.
3. Not necessarely. You have to focus on them don't you? :)
4. No. Banning that would be the first step to ban buttons and the rest. After all it all depends on how good of a driver one is.

Definitely displays, but good and multitouch displays. Button is an old feature, that can't have a place in the future.
If i'm driving a car, i prefer to use voice commands. A chance of getting into a car accident is lower and commands request are faster.
Not in 100% cases, but certainly they are better than buttons. It must be legal i think, but in the other hand must be safe. Maybe we need to think about putting this kind of screen in front of our eyes.
Vladlen Kyselov said…
I think the best option is to have both, because while driving it may be hard to watch all time at the display to choose what you want, but when you have buttons you can easily feel which button you press. Also when touching display there should be a sound supporting system to alert driver what he/she clicked on the display.

Despite the fact that there are a lot of fingerprints left on the touchscreens, I still prefer the idea of having them instead of having dozens of knobs all around me. I think that my favourite way of browsing through the media would be doing it throughout using voice comands. Of course I am talking about the perfect voice recognition, which maybe awaits us somewhere in the future. This way of browsing should be the least invasive one, when it comes to focus on the road.
I don't think that touchscreens influence on being focused that much. They are designed in such a way that they should only cause a minimal distraction to driving. Some of the features are even locked if the car is moving.
I am definiately agains any ideas of banning such screens. These are specifically designed for driving, unlike smartphones, which could cause some major distractions.

I prefer phisical buttons. After some time of using them, we are able to remember the position each of them. In my opinion it is much more safier when we don't disturb ourselves with looking for some non-phisical button on display. I think voice commands are cool. Personally i use them to call to someone.

I don't think it should be illegal. What's more, I don't think using mobile phone during driving the car should be illegal too. I consider myself as someone who has divisible attention and I'm able to drive a car and use my smartphone at the same time.
If I need to write something I prefer to use buttons. It is more comfortable and I do less mistakes typing on a regular button keyboard. But as for phones, the display interface is made for them, and it works out great (display adapts to size ect.). I never used trackpad, voice commands or touchscreen in a car, as the media navigator. But I suppose, that using knobs and buttons is more reliable, and less distracting than the touchpad and touchscreen, because you know which button or knob does what, and you can almost change the temperature etc. without taking away your sight from the road. As I said, I never drove a car with a touchscreen, so I can not tell from my experience, but it sounds like there could be some complex interface, and it could take away too much attention from the driver.

Do you prefer buttons or displays?
Commonly I prefer touch screens but in that case, when as the driver you need to be focus, better solution seems to be buttons. Of course not everywhere but to only the frequenter accessories. Other good solution I think is voice control, that provide many features without disturbing.
What is your favourite tool to navigate through media in car? Knobs, trackpad, buttons, voice commands or touchscreens?
My favorite tool to navigate is trackpad like those in the BMW. I think is very handy.
Do you think that touchscreens compromise road safety?
Yes, used for functions that you can set before driving.
Should using touchscreens during driving be illegal just as using smartphone?
It depends, maybe should be some limit build inside that prevent from driving and setting up more advanced options.
Personally, I prefer displays. But in some cases buttons are more useful.
My favourite tools to navigate through media in car are knobs, buttons touchscreen.
I don't think that touchscreens compromise road safety, the touchscreen is designed in such a way so it doesn't distract a driver from the road. In new cars, they are big and bright and placed in a right spot.
I don't agree that using touchscreens during driving should be illegal, as I can see, all new cars have big touchscreens and nothing more. It's elegant and convenient to use.

For me the on-board computer in the display version is a brilliant solution.
First, it takes less space on the dashboard. Secondly, it is more efficient. There are more options, the buttons would not be able to put all that. I have a screen in my car myself and do everything with a single knob. Very comfortable. My favorite are the touch screen, knob and steering wheel buttons. I think that the touch screen is safe. Of course, even if there were buttons and we would have fun while driving, it would also be dangerous. They can not prohibit the use of touch screens while driving, because in most of them to set np temperature, you have to click on the screen
Unknown said…
Interesting article, hardly thought about that issue. Maybe because my car uses analog buttons as of yet ;) From my experience I do prefer physical buttons. I don't have to take my eyes off the road to find the button which does the thing I wanna do and press it. I defeinitely would'nt want a touchscreen in my car. A nightmare I imagine! Touchscreens and other ways of interacting with cars' systems came by because the number of functionalities given to a car exploded in the last decade. So to make use of such a number of subsystems with analog buttons we would have to handle a boeing 777 cockpit.
Touchscreens do add up to less safety, it is already dangeours enough on the streets with all those people with their smartphones in one hand and the wheel in the other.

In my opinion, everything depends on the type of display and the size of the buttons. Modern high-end screens are very useful and are used very well. In cheaper models of phones or tablets, sometimes the touch screen does not react, or stutters. Therefore, a good solution is to connect the screen with the buttons. For navigation, my favorite tool are knobs. Touch screens in cars do not affect driving safety because they are at a convenient distance for the driver. Over to some functions are turned off while driving. I don't think that the touch screens in cars should be illegal. Modern cars have automatic pairing functions with the phone, so that answering a telephone isn't a problem.
Patryk Pohnke said…
Yes, screens are obligatory in cars, because there is no better way to display informations such as navigation directions. On the other hand there should be physical buttons to interact with the car, just because a car owner can remember their position and press them without looking.
Patryk Pohnke said…
I totally agree with you. Of course it is possible to set up a screen in a way that most used functions are always displayed, but still interacting with them requires your eyes and fingers on the screen.
Patryk Pohnke said…
Very nice to read, that actually a lot of people share the same view in this matter! I love big screens, cause they can pass a lot of important informations, but let physical elements like knobs and buttons do their job :)
Patryk Pohnke said…
Thank you for your comment! I saw Stinger's interior and I had the same feeling. It is placed a little bit too high for me. For shorter people it can be a huge problem, as their field of view will be much smaller. I agree with you about mixing buttons with screens. Lets hope that car manufacturers will come up with the same conclusions :)
I usually prefer displays than buttons, but in a car I definitely prefer buttons. It’s the least distracting way to navigate through media in car. I think that touchscreens may compromise road safety in some way, because you have to precisely touch the screen when you can just feel when the button is, without looking at it. However I don’t think that it should be illegal to use them during driving.
Patryk Pohnke said…
I don't think that pressing a button without looking can be comparable with looking on a display to find an icon, then placing your finger in this spot, then looking if your finger is actually clicking this electronic button. Time spent looking at the screen is few times larger, which compromise safety. I love touchscreens in cars, but beside them there should be physical elements to interact with the system, especially for functions which are used a lot.
It's a difficult question because I've never think about it but I would choose buttons.
In car I prefer buttons- I dont have to look at them because I can easily feel them under my fingers.
I think that touchscreens indeed compromise road safety because it is really difficult to use it without looking at it.
Using touchscreen during driving shouldn't be illegal.
Patryk Pohnke said…
Your opinion is almost identical to mine. However I think that people should be educated more about dangers of using electronic devices in cars, no matter they are built in or not. Using smartphone during driving is illegal, but that doesn't stop people from doing it :)
Patryk Pohnke said…
I think you will agree, that the perfect solution is a touchscreen with physical elements installed on dashboard that allow to interact with the system. That gives an owner opportunity to use touchscreen(for example when car is parked) and buttons/knobs during driving to adjust some settings.
Patryk Pohnke said…
Unfortunately, sometimes I use my smartphone when driving. I'm trying to do it as rarely as I can, but some of the situations are unavoidable. Stopping a car to answer every call or change some setting in car system via touchscreens is impossible and nobody will do that. That's why I think touchscreens and their using shouldn't be forbidden.
Unknown said…
Do not forget about the new generation of Mercedes cars, which have a huge, panoramic display on the dashboard. They look awesome, but I have some doubts about if they should actually be used in cars, especially as long as they do not offer some kind of feedback when touching, so that it would not require looking off the road. I think touchscreens might be as distracting as using a mobile phone, so I don't see any reason why using a phone should be illegal while this isn't.

At the moment I am still all-in for knobs and buttons, but in a few years, when voice commands get near to perfect this might be the solution. The trackpad and the touchscreen still requires to take attention from the road, which is by no means good.

That said, I don't think touchscreens compromise road safety, when used responsibly. Unfortunately, if something is legal, people see it as harmless and tend to overdo it, and that's the moment when it actually stops being safe. Many people are not responsible and that is why we actually need laws forbidding the use of phones, maybe we need these forbidding the use of touchscreens in cars after all?
1. If it comes to car, for me only buttons. I hate those sliders with volume in new cars + its kinda dangerous to use it as it doesn't have shape so you have to take eyes off the road.
2. Knobs and buttons always.
3. I think that touchscreens indeed compromise road safety because it is really difficult to use it without looking at it.
4. But you dont have to handle it like smartphone and you won't get fine for using googlemaps...

I prefer buttons instead of touch screens. I think car manufacturers are implementing touch screens because they want their cars to look nice when they are looked by potential customers. I don't have favorite tool to navigate media in car. I used only buttons, but I can imagine how painful it is to search for right place to tap when you are speeding in your car. I think it compromises my safety. I'm not fan of making something illegal. I'd rather advice people to think when they are doing something. You can of course make something illegal, but people has to know that this is illegal. If they don't know then what's the point?

Why is there a choise between buttons or display, when all the cars nowadays have both? When driving a car knobs and buttons are definitely the most convinient for me. Voice commands do not work well all the time so I would like them to be rather an additional option than the main tool to navigate through media. I can't imagine using touchscreen while driving. I actually know nothing about touchscreens in cars. I don't think car producers didn't think about people using them while driving. I don't know if they should or shouldn't be illegal. If they are put into cars then someone said they are safe.
It's a really good arguments. Texting is one of the main causes of car collisions, yet we keep putting more and more screens in our cars to distract us from driving. I know it's all going towards self-driving cars in which we won't have to pay attention to the road, be we ain't there yet.

Thankfully the car manufacturers do respect some limits in this trend. For example features like watching videos on the front screen of your car are not available when the car is moving, at least not for the people in the front.
1. I prefer buttons, because I am used to them. I can operate them automatically, while displays require my attention to navigate.
2. Definitely buttons. But I’d like to try voice commands, which could be more convenient and safer.
3. Definitely not, in my opinion, as I mentioned above. I guess this is personally conditioned issue, and we cannot generalize and say, what’s better to achieve better security on roads. The bigger chance to achieve this is to use voice commands. But we need some time to get used to this idea, to make it more popular.
4. Using touchscreens during driving should be forbidden, normally we should switch on everything and prepare all the necessary options before driving. To change something normally we should stop. On the other hand, we are so multitasking now, so making it illegal would be exaggerating, in my opinion.

I prefer using buttons, as they don't require me to look at them, I can just feel the proper one under my finger to press it. Also, touchscreens usually have massive lag and no feedback (i.e. when you click a button, you can feel that you did this). When it comes to navigating through media, I like all sorts of fast things that allow fast scrolling- knobs, buttons etc. While touchpads might be good for computers, they work poorly when you are trying to move a tiny slider while driving.
Basically anything that requires you to stop looking at the road compromises road safety - somehow only using phones is illegal, but if you want to read your daily newspaper while eating triple whooper and drinking cola, all of that while driving 200kph, its suddenly all good...
Patryk Pohnke said…
Why? Because as I showed there is no choice. Look at the interior of Peugeot 308, climate control is controlled by touchscreen. And it is budget car form 2014! Nowadays it is becoming even more popular.
Yevhen Shymko said…
Im confused why you didn't mentioned Tesla model S since it is the oldest most popular only touch screen way of control. I think you miss the bigger picture with this changes. They trying to concentrate all controls in one place so later they can be performed with AI instead of humans. And I'm definitely prefer my car to be smart of how do I like it instead of me having to do it manually every time.
I prefer using buttons but of course it depends on the situation. In cars to navigate through media i like the most knobs or buttons i guess. They're precise and i have never had problems with them yet. Yes i think that touchscreens are just as safe as the others navigate tools and when you are using them you need to be careful. I think touchscreens shouldn't be illegal because as i said before we need to be careful while we drive.
Dunno really, both options are pretty well but the touchscreen can be a bit better option in warm season and buttons would be better in cold seasons as well.

True, I've heard that for example in new BMW you can't open the internet browser when car is in motion.

Nice topic, I have never thought about it. But I think, I am agree with you. I would prefer the combination of the screen and buttons. But now I have a quite minimalistic car - only buttons and a small display for the radio. And you know what? it is really enough for me. Maybe if you start using some innovative stuff, it would be hard to come back to the old version, but I am totally satisfied with my minimalism and you could always concentrate on the road and traffic. I can't even imagine, what could be so necessary for me that I would choose that TV screens. My dad's car has all this new technologies and I drive it, it just irritates me so much - I can't just change the song, it's a long process, I can no longer control the situation on the road, cause I have to deal with all these endless "Ok" and "Cancel". So maybe it's not such a silly idea to make the touchscreens in the cars illegal, I guess.
Thanks to the author for the article. Touch panels in cars are now very popular. But I would prefer the usual buttons. You can safely find them while watching the road. Based on the experience of the mobile phone, fingerprints throughout the car are not inspiring at all. Moreover, the touch button can be pressed accidentally. I vote for the prohibition of touch panels in cars.

I guess the screen is the best representation tool to use in the car. So if you meant touchscreen vs buttons, I prefer buttons.
It would be nice to have some voice control over my car but only to a certain point. I don't want to alter my cars behavior on the road using my voice. Just the radio and all useful settings.
Today we are all used to phones and I think it would be wise to restrict car designers to actually create something that is both secure and simple in use.
Unknown said…
For me it is fine to use both buttons and displays. If you are asking me about favourite tool to nagivate through media in car it is voice commands, just because you can focus on driving without looking for something on display. When it comes to safety I think that you shouldn't use touchscreens while driving because you have to look at it which means you can't pay attention to road.
Unknown said…
Actually, I prefer buttons over displays. I'm sure that it has been pushed, so it should work or I can easily say when it stuck somehow and doesn't work.
I think that my favourite tools to navigate are buttons and knobs. They are very manual so I can tell when I changed anything. Using voice commands may end up in funny or dangerous situations, so I would avoid it. And touchscreen - clicked by accident may change something unnotices.
I think that touch screens are dangerous. They can probably switch (some screens), so to pick right one you have too look there, while your eyes should be focused on road. When there are buttons they are always at same place so you can know by heart where they are. If you dont remember, you can easily fell them under your fingers while looking for right one.
As I mentioned above touchscreens used by driver may be dangerous so yes, I think they should be forbidden for now. If manufacrurers will find something similar, but safer I would be glad to get to know such solution.
Unknown said…
1. I prefer displays. I really like their futuristic design and functionality.
2. Good touchscreen is definitely the best option for me.
3. If it’s working properly and we don’t waste our time to push the right letter five times, then it’s okay. Otherwise it can be dangerous, because it will distract us.
4. As I said - if it’s working properly, then no, it shouldn’t be illegal.
Patryk Pohnke said…
Exactly, you can eat, drink and do whatever you want in your car. But for some reason using mobile phones is forbidden. I guess it is not about your hand being busy(cause you can keep bottle of cola for example), but about distraction. Built-in touchscreens cause the same distraction. I don't think they should be illegal, but people should be educated more about dangers and threats coming from using displays during driving.
Unknown said…
I think the mix is the best solution. Combination of the display and physical buttons will work best. Knobs, trackpad, buttons, touchscreens all are good. Expect voice commands - I really don't like it. In my opinion, touchscreens don't compromise road safety. Everything that distracts you from driving is not safe.
In my opinion using touchscreen during driving shouldn't be illegal...

Sure, that's why I love touchscreens and I want them in cars. But while they can be used freely in traffic jams or on parking slots, there should be physical devices letting you navigate through settings and menus. I agree that design of UI should be as simple as possible, it is just hard to keep it simple nowadays cause number of functionalities is growing constantly.

Voice commands are nice, but they don't work in all cases. Sometime you have to repeat yourself several times :)

I think that BMW has designed a button that was displayed as a hologram and when you pushed it it released a small dose of air which made it feel like a real physical button. I think it was pretty cool but I cannot find a video of it right now.
As for the screen vs button discussion - The only downside to screens I can think of is that they require more power to function and can be easily broken.
The displays look more futuristic and elegant, when it comes to comfort and usage, they are good enough, but as for me, when you are driving, the usage of a display distracts you much more than the normal button.

I prefer displays than buttons. I have iPhone X, one button less than my previous iPhone but it is really awesome. I think in future the problem of fingerprints will be resolved by different type of material using in screens. I used to have trackpad in Mercedes, buttons, but I have the opportunity to drive Tesla and touchscreens in this car are amazing. But I think touchscreens are less safe than buttons, but it shouldn't be illeagal.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
