Week 11 [15.01.2018-21.01.2018] Impact of 3D printing on our future.

3D printing will probably become the main method of how many products will be produced in the near future. There’s plenty of 3D printing companies competing for customers; from small-scale ones to huge corporations. The initial focus was on the private consumer market but when that didn’t catch on, the focus was diverted towards businesses. And it caught on.

Just to enlighten some of you who’ve never been interested in this technology, I’ll briefly explain few of the methods of 3D printing.

Starting with the most basic one - FDM, which stands for Fused Deposition Modelling. The idea is very simple. Usually, some kind of plastic gets heated up to its melting point and then,

pushed through a small nozzle, layer by layer it’s laid into the desired shape.
This method is the cheapest and simplest of all known. While you can achieve pretty good quality with it, it doesn’t allow for high scale production runs. But you can make some (usually useless, but not always!) things, like those:
The second method is SLA - Stereolithography. The idea here is to point a laser into a vat of light-sensitive resin. This one is a bit faster (although it almost always requires some post-processing work on the print), quite more expensive and sometimes precise enough to be used in prototyping.

The last one I want to introduce to you is SLS - Selective Laser Sintering. It works similar to the previous one. A laser is shot on very fine dust of plastic, metal or other material. This method allows for much greater print volumes than any other. And while it’s the most expensive one (in terms of upfront investment) it allows producing objects with very good detail and at a reasonable price.

With 3D printing technology, we’ll change the way we make new products. “If you can dream it, you can print it,” says Thorbjoern Fors, CEO of Siemens’ Distributed Generation Service. Designers are now “allowed” to fail because it won’t cost the company huge amounts of money to make a new iteration of the product. They could just print it.

Questions:
1. If you had a printer, what would you print? ("I'd print another 3D printer" - this answer is not allowed ;) )
2. How do you think products will change with help of 3D printers?
3. Have you heard of some other use of 3D printing other than household items or production?

3D printers are awesome. There is so many things that were very hard or very costly to create in the past, while now you can literally just download project from the internet and print it in your own house, be it some kind of figurine, case, maybe even fake lego for your children. I especially like the possibility, for example I used 3D printer for printing a case for my Raspberry Pi, and it turned out to be just awesome. I think it'll be used mainly for printing small missing parts of various devices, since that thing is probably the easiest to recreate - just some missing plastic thing.

I have heard about some prominent surgeries with using printed elements. I can't give you a clear-cut answer what I would print, because I don't know what is a demand for printed products.
I am inclined to believe that they're going to be cheaper and more available.

If I had a printer, I would print fidget spinners and parts for things I broke.
I think that when 3D printers will be very popular and everyone will have one at home, we won't need to buy many products at all. We will only need to buy a file with a product's plan and resources needed to print it.
I've heard that researchers successfully printed some kind of a human organ or human part but I don't remember the details.

I think I would print a holder for my phone. I hope that with help of 3D printers many everyday things will be much cheaper. I think it will be also easier to repair them. I've heard that someone printed leg prothesis and it was really good.

I would print something interesting, maybe it's will be a toy or exotic model. I like to have very interesting things in my room. For example, i have a rabbit which was created on the 3d printer. Really cool decoration.
I think 3d printer in the future will be larger in size for creating some house for people or will be better in the configuration for creating some organs in medical.

If I had a printer, I would print some parts to my own drone! Yes.. that's a good idea :P
I think that 3D printers are going to be for everyone. It's easy to use it.
"I'd print another 3D printer" - this answer is not allowed ;) Why not ? You seem to not realize that printing own better printer is a thing, and it a legitimate reason for buying cheap 3d printers...

Unforetunately i think that popularity of 3D printers wil be a bad thing for us -> We might see companies starting to send us a schemes to print a replacement part instead of actually caring about customer service(Here you go go print that part yourself)
I saw a 3D"printed" House, it was printed with concrete in less than 2 days.

3D printer is my a little dream I hope in nearly future. I think that products not very change because it's been 10 years since to invent it. I would like print with 3D printer for example some figures maybe auto parts. I heard that people use it for printer denatres and even bones for people. I heard to that some 3D prinetr can print itself in 90%.

I have always wanted to print gaming figures for example “Warhammer” or World War 2. It would be nice to paint and play with them and at the same time not cost you an arm and a leg. I think that 3D printers will change our products immensely. Everything will be more affordable and the quality will improve. I have heard about 3D printers that can print whole buildings! How awesome is that?

1. I'd print a ring model so that i would be able to make a plaster form in which iwould then pour silver or gold (not yet chosen xD).
2. I have no idea.
3. Nope sorry.

I didn`t even think about it. What can be useful printed on 3D printer? I don`t know how they work so I guess first of all I would like to do that. I will learn how it works first and than I will make some decisions concerning about 3D printers.
If i had a 3D printer,i would print iphone X and set up a business. A lot of things would be changed. Medicine first of all and a little bit later other things will be changed(more common things in our routine).I have never heard about other use of 3D printer, but now you can print anything you want i think.

The 3d printer is a breakthrough in technology. It is a brilliant device. I never thought about what I would print. Maybe a car model.

Yeah, I've read of a hospital in Spain that uses 3D printed tools that are custom made for the patient.
A link to the article: Spanish Surgeons Use Patient-Specific 3D Printed Surgical Instruments

As for the price of 3D printers, yes they're getting cheaper and more advanced every year!
If I had a printer, I'd print for example some interesting trinkets for my apartment.
I think, it will become much easier and cheap for regular people or small companies to produce different products.
I heard that there are "3d printed" houses and someone managed to build a gun using 3d printer.
Marcin Derlatka said…
That's a great idea! Me and a couple of friends actually made some 3D printed drones. Great for learning purposes - if you break something(and you will break something for sure!) you can just print that part again and keep flying.
I would probably print my house, or when it will be possible I would print exchange organs. Maybe thank to 3d printers products will cost less. I heard about a restaurant in Spain, where they use 3d printers to print food. Of course it is on an early stage, where they print only shapes from sauce or mashed potatoes.
Marcin Derlatka said…
Well yea, there's the whole idea of RepRap - a machine that can replicate itself. But you can't print every part of a printer just yet (everything electronical is still hard or impossible to print).

Maybe it's a good thing though. You'll get a file that you can just print at home or 3D printing facility and use it instead of waiting for the spare part to arrive.
1. If you had a printer, what would you print? ("I'd print another 3D printer" - this answer is not allowed ;) )
The first thing I would to is a Bluetooth Headphone stand because I cannot find the right one for me. The second one would be a some could shaped furniture or car accesories. Have played for a while with 3D creator so maybe it would be a good time for a print.
2. How do you think products will change with help of 3D printers?
We will have the possibility to "buy" architecture of a product and just print it in our own house - that can make a lot of business out of work.
3. Have you heard of some other use of 3D printing other than household items or production?
Sunglasses clip, Web Camera Cover, Headphone stand :)))

There's this guy dutchmogul, he makes plenty of great looking 3D printed figures and props for RPG games.

As for prining buildings, check this out: Apis Cor. This company 3D prints building with minimal human help. That's pretty cool!

If I had a 3D printer I would probably mess around with making some cases for the IoT devices I am using. That isn't the most elaborate way of using it, but that's just what I would use it for.
I think that the main change that this technology would introduce is that the final products would be more suited for the individual use. Everyone would be able to have his/her own limited edition of a product that probably exists somewhere. If it doesn't though - it will.
I don't know what's the current state of all of these 3D projects that I've read about a long time ago, but yes - I've heard about some other uses. One of the most interesting out of all of them is printing food. It could be cheaper and pretty at the same time.

If I had a printer I would definitely print all the small stuff that I would find useful on my desk but I never have time to look for. A stand for a phone/pen/laptop/notebook/book, a debugging companion which I could talk to (in conjunction with raspberry pi he would answer me). I remember a TV show called "Star Gate", and old school sci-fi, and in one of the last episodes where the crew of a hiper advanced spaceship was frozen(almost) in time and they had a device kinda resembling a 3D printer. That device though, could print/spawn aynthing they could think of. Food, plates, a violin, bedsheets, a chair, aynthing they had a blueprint from earth for. So maybe that could be a future of 3D printng. Printing anything you want.

I remember I found an article in which it was described how one man created an awesome ring with octopus and printed it. I was very impressed by this, so I would like to do something like this as a try. Ald later I would print something more useful.
I can't answer the second questions because I don't know much about materials used in 3D printing. Are they safe? There is a picture with a vase in the article. But can we print a cup or spoon and use it in everyday life? Or the materials are not supposed to be used in the way when we eat with this/when kids will play with this?
I've heard doctors want to print organs with 3D printers. But again, which materials should they use and where to get them?

I have a 3D printer. It's good for printing small and not complicated toys and cases for electronic devices.
I don't think they will. It's nice technology for personal usage but too expensive for massive production. Also, it's quite limited and there are things it cannot print.
I heard it's commonly used by many small companies for printing prototypes for their products.

I would print myself the grinder. Friend of mine has one and it looks really cool. As I heard 3D printing has got really big impact in medicine. Nowadays we are able to print implants. 3D printing has also bad sides. One of the biggest issues are printed weapons. They are really tough to detect.
Unknown said…
If you had a printer, what would you print? ("I'd print another 3D printer" - this answer is not allowed ;) )
I think I could use it as a business for example some architects model projects or other prototypes. Or I could print some interesting project from internet.
How do you think products will change with help of 3D printers?
I think products could have better design.

If I had a 3d printer, I would print various types of toys and various accessories used in everyday use. The use of a 3d printer is virtually unlimited. You can do anything from simple, one-piece projects to working mechanisms.
If I had 3D printer I would probably print some useless stuff, probably the first think from googling query “3D printer models download”. I think that 3D printers will allow small companies to develop their own products, because of how cheap the prototyping will be. I have heard about using 3D printers in medicine for example to print parts of bones etc.

I am a fun of radio control models and I would use it for printing parts for my cars. I think that thanks to 3d printers more creative people will have opportunity to make their ideas real. You can easily try some design of furniture or other item and create some prototype for not much amount of money. I have heard that people use such printers for creating simple guns and it was pretty awesome because this gun works.

1. If I had 3D printer today, I would print a snow plough. I have a lot of snow around my house and I have to remove it my myself.
Apart from that I would print a lot of toys to poor children.
2. Personally I have a lot of hope to use 3D printers in medicine. It could be amazing to produce every kind of implants. That would help many people to exist in better way they used to, if it would be also cheaper than traditional production process.
3. Unfortunately, not yet. But I am sure usage of 3D printers will be developed in the future. I hope for medicine market in particular, but also it could be used to produce clothes and other necessary staff, what could protect money and environment in fact.

I heard that people were printing even houses. They printed every big piece of house and then assembled it like a lego. If I had a printer I would print some floppy disks. I always wanted to install DOS on my computer. I think 3D printers will not change the products but prices of products.

I would definitely use the printer to print 3D models I would make. At the moment I am working at a 3D model of my car and I am already planning on printing it (probably in 1/10 scale).
Products have already changed with the help of 3d printers. First of all, this is a cheap way of making one-off prototypes. Not having to buy big machines or ordering models manufactured in those (where making a form for a big quanitity is profitable, but definitely not for a one-off) if a huge saving, which makes it possible for more people to actually try making their idea true. Actual products which were changed by 3D printing (which is actually pretty cool) is PC components, which can be customised by the owner with 3d-printed parts. For example, ASUS offers a lot of 3D-printed accessories and modules for downloading that go well with their products, like cable covers, cable combs or SLI bridges.
Also related to households (but as I imagine not covered by your question) are actual 3D printers that print... houses. This is something that is really impressive for me, 3D printers able to print a house out of concrete - and yes, they are already a thing!
If I had 3d printer I would print a girlfriend for myself (*cries in foreveralone).
3d printers have great potential in a fields like medicine - I bealive it is possible to print some organs nowadays. Despite that, I think that countries like China are using 3d printing in building industry.
Magdalena Popek said…
If I had a 3D printer I would print things I need at home instead of buying them. I think thanks to 3D printing products will be more customized to the person. You can change the color as you wish or a shape if you want. I've even heard of whole houses that has been printed using 3d printer. One of the best ideas in my opinion is 3D printed plaster with holes (like a hard net). That's a great alternative for traditional orthopedic cast as you can easily wash your body part covered by it.
Marcin Derlatka said…
You could make a miniature one for now: 3D Portraits by Cubuto ;)
Marcin Derlatka said…
That sound great! Let me tell you, it's a great feeling to print something that you've modelled yourself.

Yea, the ability to 3D print a part before sending it to mass production is amazing, such a time and money save if something doesn't work as intended.
I haven't heard about ASUS allowing you to customize your case, I have to check it out!
Marcin Derlatka said…
Like this one? While I'm not sure how well it works if done by yourself at home, I can imagine that in professional scenario it could make the patient much more happy to have a cast like this one instead of the traditional one.

>If you had a printer, what would you print? ("I'd print another 3D printer" - this answer is not allowed ;) )
"I'd get b& if I said what would I print >:D", but nah- if it were some high-quality printouts, with metals included (not some ABS weave), then I'd print stuff that broke, or that I need a cheap replacement for.
>How do you think products will change with help of 3D printers?
Assuming it wont be killed by giant companies with copyright claims for anything? Things will get cheaper, especially the ones made on request, also there should be more "inventors" as you would be able to start small series of products without great production costs.
3. Have you heard of some other use of 3D printing other than household items or production?
I've heard that someone has already printed, or at least tried to make a gun. I think it even fired once. Well, that's the other threat for 3D printing- "madmans printing guns". While it seems dumb and surreal, it's still possible.
Marcin Derlatka said…
There's DIY machines that allow you to recycle PET bottles into 3D printer usable filament. That could prolong the inevitable bankruptcy date ;)

The price of a decent quality printer that doesn't break every print is around 3000-4000PLN and the prices are going down every year. So the dream of 3D printer in every household is getting closer and closer.
Marcin Derlatka said…
Oh, there's plenty of parts or even complete RC projects available online, like those: OpenRC F1 car or Martian rover.
You're right, a lot of creative people now have the ability to share their projects and ideas more easily.

As for the guns. They exist, you might have to do some digging to find ones that don't break after (or before) use.
I’ve printed an armadillo like this one - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2064359 and it’s like the best thing ever to keep on your desk at work. I play with it all the time! I’d print mamy more and create an army :D
I believe huge change in everyday lives is that products can become very easily customized.
I think medicine could be revolutionized by 3D printing. I heard that it’s already possible to print prosthetics, bones and even tissues with blood vessels.
Marcin Derlatka said…
Adidas thinks otherwise ;) The perfect fit: Carbon + adidas collaborate to upend athletic footwear. Of course it's completely different technology than cheap FDM, but still.
3D printers are a very interesting topic. I would really like to buy one printer for my home. I could print different figures and models, alas, I'm completely impractical. In my opinion, 3D printers are the future of mankind. Already in China homes are being printed, and in medicine, they are used to create implants. I think that soon we will learn how to print organs. I would like to look at a hundred years ahead and see how 3D printers have changed the world.
Marcin Derlatka said…
Many atrists use 3D printed jewelery to "test" the design and later make a mold out of it. It them helps so much during the prototyping process!

There's plenty of available materials, some safe some not so much. There's a big push towards making more and more safe materials though, so you don't have to worry :)
So yes, you could print things like cutlery for everyday use.

As for the printed organs the materials they use are some polymers that exist in algae or our blood. It won't be avalible to a normal person but for laboratories and hospitals for sure.
Marcin Derlatka said…
Nice! I've seen that design but didn't have a chance to print it yet :(

I'm using this one at home and at work. Such a simple thing but quite helpful.

We're still quite a way from the Star Gate like machine, but maybe some day it could become a reality for us.

3D printer are great! I think that in the future there will be more and more of them. The things that you can create thanks to them are unbelievable. I recently saw 3D printer at Museum Night in PJWSTK. I have to admit that 3D printer interested a large group of people.
I think I would print a mug in 3D. Coffee mug! I think that these printers will help in many aspects of everyday life. I hope in the future everyone will be able to have their own 3D printer.
There are obviously limitations, for example in the range of materials you could use. Despite that I do thing that 3D printing will revolutionize our plastic made world. Imagine for example you could go to your local printing spot and pay a few dollars for a specific piece of plastic. The same piece of plastic that just happened to break in your fridge. Obviously no one makes sells these parts in hope of decreasing the average liveliness of an average fridge. Well, you can.

Many printing spots in the US have been offering 3D printing for years now. Some libraries are also equipped with such printers. All you need is the right shape recorded on a flash drive.

We live in the times of Apple's domination of the electronic gadget market. The next generation won't need Apple, they'll be able to download, print and assemble a smartphone in their garage in a matter of minutes. Imagine the possibilities. And while you do try not to think to much about the fact that you can already print fully functional and totally untraceable and undetectable to metal detectors various size firearms :D
Unknown said…
I wouldn't buy 3d printer just because it's too much effort on my part to achieve something this way. Its easier and cheaper to just buy the thing.
Until we get better technology and ability to 3d print complex materials, printers are just a gimmick and I don't think they have much use for a regular person.
Unknown said…
I love things like that and i had a possibility to use powder printer in our school. It's great fun but expensive. If I didn't have to worry about the costs, I would print a lot of gadgets that I like. In my opinion, the quality of products will be better thanks to 3D printers because the printed elements are greatly measured. It is also a much faster way to manufacture products. I heard about the use of 3d printers for printing replacement elements that will be implantable into the human body during surgery. I think that the invention of 3d printers will have really large impact on people and their (our!) live.
3D printers seems like a good fun. There are many things that comes to my head right know what would I print that i cannot answer that question. I think the products will lower their price because using 3D printer is pretty cheap. I heard that our school (not so long ago) has bought a lot of 3D printers.
Unknown said…
3D printing seems to be amazing! I have never read any information about it, so your article was very interesting. I think, if I had 3D printer, I would just start printing everything I could imagine:D maybe some stupid things, maybe some art or kitchen utensils)) The whole idea of 3D printing is amazing. I have heard about the prothesis 3D printing, so it is really a very helpful thing. I do believe, that soon all the people could afford the 3D printer and it will have a great influence on economy, because we could create at home, instead of buying.

If I could have 3D priter I propably would print small figures of superheroes because im collecting them, so this new ones would extend my actual collection. If you are printing something by yourself, then you can choose your own customization.I have heard about implats made by 3D printers.

I would print toys for my dog and my brother and myself. I would print some glasses, plates and cutlery, as I've got not enough (never is enough). I love buying stuff, so I wouldn't like to print it all (no fun at all!)
I think that they may be cheaper - by substituting a whole technical process by printers it may be cheaper for produces to produce, so product may be cheaper.
I've heard about printing pawns for game (can you imagine, for example game of thrones themed chess made in your garage?)

3D printer is an indisputable revolution in the field of printing. Previously, purchase of this type of equipment was too high and only companies with large capital could afford them. Now there are different types and sizes of such machines, and, more importantly, they became available to an average person.
3D modeling now used for a very wide range of fields:
1. Construction - the creation of a whole house in which it will be comfortable to live just in one day.
2. Medicine - complex program for printing cells, bones and even internal organs.
3. Production - modeling and production of complex parts that person can't create.
4. Substances - discovery and creation of new materials not known to mankind before.
5. Architecture - the creation of models of buildings, structures and even entire microdistricts.
6. Education - visual aids for studying various branches of science
7. Manufacture of clothing - clothing printed with a 3d printer has long covered fashion shows.
8. Jewelry - the joy of every woman, even the most insane forms can be realized.
9. Printing toys and souvenirs - new monsters for children, and even possibility to create a mini copy of himself.
This list can go on and on :)

I've heard about those bottle recycling filament makers and they do seem great however there is one major problem with them. You'd have to thoroughly clean all the plastic beforehand. I just can't imagine an easy way to mass remove labels from the bottles, not to mention the hassle of cleaning their insides.

I think that 3D printers are becoming more and more popular, I think that this is a great solution. If we can create something new from a plastic bottle. It is environmentally friendly but also development. Often seen at exhibitions what people create using 3D printers. Im delighted if I could print something I would like to make a multifunctional piece of furniture. Modern and very stylish. Of course, 3D printers are already used in very many categories.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
