Week 3 [17.10-23.10.2016] Touhou - a musical phenomenon from Japan

If I told you that a video game created by a small indie studio turned out to be a great success, you would probably consider it quite common. If I told you that music in video games can be outstanding masterpieces - you'd say of course.  After all video games industry is nowadays made out of billions of dollars, so it's quite common to find some hidden gems in all those hired artists working for the best companies. But what would you say if I told you that there is one guy who coded the whole game, drew the whole art and composed entire music, all by himself, as a hobby, and it turned out to be so good that his musical compositions are currently being re-used infinitely, by hundreds of professional artists, in total of at least 20 thousands of tracks? Welcome to Japan.

Touhou is a video game developed by the team Shanghai Alice, which is in fact run by one person - "ZUN". I could now tell you how hard it is to create an entire game alone and make it such a gigantic success, but that's not what I wanted to talk about in this article, so if you'd like to learn more about the game itself, please feel free to visit the wiki.

I found out about Touhou maybe a few years ago and you could list at least a few of the reasons why it's so special and catchy - music is one of those reasons. I'm pretty sure you have your own favourite song that you could listen to for the whole day and not get bored, everybody has at least one of those. Now you probably heard various remixes and re-arrangements of that song, maybe some were good, some were bad, but it's usually the original that we prefer the most. But what if suddenly, hundreds of different artists from the entire world started to make high-quality arrangements of your favourite track keeping original composition and overall feel of it?

This is pretty much what happened in Japan. For some reason, the music compositions made by "ZUN" are so great that various professional artists decided to dedicate their passion and skills to arrange and remix the same songs over and over again. And you know what? It never gets boring.

Okay, so you got the initial idea what is going on and you're probably all wondering how that music even sounds like, so let me help you with your curiosity :).

Here are 4 songs that I decided to share with you, from 4 different music genres and artists. Your objective is to find what connects all of those. Don't feel obligated to listen to all of them, pick genres you enjoy listening to:

幽閉サテライト (Yuuhei Satellite) - Opposite World (Vocal/J-POP)
CROW'SCLAW - Scarlet Devil (Metal/Rock)
SOUND HOLIC - Noite De Carnaval (Jazz)
WAVE - Dectet, Nonet, Octet (Orchestral)

You should now say "wait, those songs sound exactly the same, yet different in all of those arrangements, what is this?!". Exactly, because all of them are based on this single composition made by "ZUN" for Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil:

Sounds familiar, right? Now imagine there are at least 200 (if not more) arrangements of just that single theme - I linked you barely 4. It's like you'd be able to modify your favourite song to every possible genre and your mood. You could listen to the same composition of notes for the 100th time, and it would still sound awesome yet different and interesting.

It's hard to say what exactly is so special in all those compositions they're catchy and sound nice - remember that it's still music made just for one indie video game, it's not even composed by any professional musical studio or artist, just a single talented guy.

And the best thing is - it's spreading. It's not only Japan that is that deep into this thing, there are arrangements from various countries and from various languages. It's like the whole world started listening to the same music, just adapting it to it's own personal taste and the mood. If you ask me, it's amazing, I'd love to hear some original arrangements of old-time classics, such as songs from Chopin or Beethoven.

Last, but not least - a few months ago I spotted new Polish musical circle named Youkai Paradise, and though it doesn't have that big collection of arrangements yet, it's very promising:

My questions to you:

1. What do you think about all of that? Do you also think that there is something strange in this, or maybe it's just Japan and it's... awkward things... :).

2. What musical genre do you like the most? Let me know if you'd be interested in listening to more of this - after all I linked barely 5 arrangements and 2 different themes. That's not enough to show the full picture, but I didn't want to bother people too much either, not everybody has to be interested in this.

3. Did you enjoy presented arrangements? How would you describe them in terms of quality? Maybe you'd like to compare it to usual stuff you're listening to.

Thanks for reading!

Wow this is very interesting! I didn't know they are able to make even 200 of songs from just one music composition! Japan is full of surprises, as always. My personal favourite music genre is rock/metal but not only, I'm open to almost every kind of music. I find this very interesting, and I really enjoyed this ones. Your article gives me another reason to go and visit Japan...it's amazing and full of weirdness and surprises in almost every aspect of life...And yes, I'm curious about some classical arrangements too, for example in pop or metal style. It can be funny.
It's nice to hear that :). Yeah Japan is full of surprises.

It is unbelievable that one song can has even 200 remakes. But when I think about Japan I can’t imagine any other nation witch such amount of absurds for example - http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/326341-13-strange-things-you-might-see-in-japan/full/

When it comes to favorite music’s genre - I don't have any. To be honest the only moment when I have time & I can listen to the music is when i drive a car. I can describe it as a mix of genres - it depends on a radio station - mostly pop and rock.

When it comes to your question - I don’t like listening such kind of music but I think it’s worth to know that there are such strange types of it.

To sum up, Japan is full of weirdness. But on the other hand, when you look at foreign tourists from Asia visiting Poland, they make a lot of photos. What does it mean? Are they curios? Maybe, they just have seen let’s say an European absurd. It my opinion we can’t judge that it’s strange or weird music - it’s just different, specific for another culture. That’s the way I consider this kind of music. For me it’s enough to know about it. Now I am glad that I know such new (for me) and different kind of music.

Japan is full of pleasant surprises, not only in terms of music. I think the same origin of these songs make them extraordinary. When Japanese make something, they do it with accuracy and full of commitment. Therefore, I would like to go to Japan in the future and learn their culture. I think it would help me in the self-improvement. On the other hand I can not answer to the question of what kind of music is my favorite. If something falls into my ear, I can listen it hole day, even if it is to be soundtarck from the movie or the mentioned songs. As for the last question, the most I liked the Polish arrangement. Maybe it's because I understood the text. I think the music created by the Japanese would be more widely known in the world, if their language was more popular.

The orchestral one is kind of neat. Sounds like it would fit in a movie where James Bond travels in time and becomes a medieval knight. I wonder if there is a good bluegrass or swamp blues covers of that.

The quantity of those covers is indeed impressive for score composed by one guy for a video game. It's not like rearranging popular songs is a rare thing, but it's good to see a video game theme get as much recognition.

In fact, it is amazing that with one song can make a lot of remakes but Not convinced me this music, I don't know why. Frankly I don't like Japan and their customs. The only thing I like of them are cars e.g. Toyota. My favorite genre is certainly disco.
I must admit that very interesting presentation. Congratulations

Considering that Touhou music now exists in pretty much every single genre that humanity ever called by name, I'm sure you'd fine something for yourself if you only wanted to :).
It's nice to read that you enjoyed at least one of those arrangements!

It's hard for me to find those subgenres in Touhou, mainly because I'm not familiar with them, but give it a try if you want to - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UNdUBfmLk4 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqnT8JBtksw :)

I think it is quite amazing, that music composed by one man, ZUN, has over 200 remakes. Those arrangements, that you posted, sound really professional and i can easily imagine, that those 200 remakes are only a beginning.
My favourite genre is hiphop, i think this could be quite funny to hear that song in this type.
Your article is another proof how different, yet interesting, Japan is.

Wow, I'm pretty shocked!

First of all, to be honest, before you published this article, I saw the title. I thought, it would be boring. I was wrong - I'm sorry :) I found out some interesting things, really.

My best friend went crazy on music like this. I can't uderstand this phenomena but I can agree with your statement that "it's possible to listen to the same composition of notes for the 100th time, and it would still sound awesome yet different and interesting." He finds "new waves", moments, vibrations etc, all the time!

Do I enjoy it? It's hard to say. I cannot say definitely 'no!', but on the other hand if I confirmed, it wouldn't be true. It depends on the soundtrack.

What's more, this kind of music reminds me soundtracks used in games. Thanks to it, playing, you feel this specific climate and deep focus.

To sum up, Japan music is not my favourite type but I can agree it can be addictive. It's unbeliveable that one song (or even theme) has numerous remakes but this fact (among others) makes it's worthy interest.

I am so sorry, but this is definitely not my cup of tea. I don't want to offend anyone - just explain my point of we. I will not say anything about the sound, but about this remake - for me it is horrible waste of time to remake one song 200 times! How to find the time to listen them all and choose what we liked the most? It is amazing what people can create...

It is awesome that one person can create creation that achieve global success. This music is very interesting, I am sure that many people can love it. Mabey one day someone from Poland will create something similar and successful.
I don't know why but you remember me Hatsune Miku - virtual idol who has a lot fan on concert (she is a hologram) and her single clip on youtube has over 25 million views! But the worst thing this type of music is really addictive. Personally i listen this genre (but also vocaloid and a little jPop) during programming and when i don't want to lose focus on my current task.
Yeah, that's also my opinion - normally you'd expect that music to be average at best, but majority sounds really professional and well-made, it's not only some fan cover or a remix, but a really decent arrangement that could easily be classified as top quality. Nice to hear that you enjoyed Polish arrangement :).
Yeah, I would feel really shocked if everybody enjoyed the same music, but I considered this little thing as really interesting to talk about, especially because I got lured >too much< into Touhou lately, to the degree that it literally filled all my internal needs of music and I'm no longer returning back to my old favourite bands, different for every genre, but to the same songs arranged in different ways. And it's really hard to say why :).
Many touhou composers are actually being paid for that, releasing albums on Japanese conventions and earning money back for their time. Indeed, if nobody was interested and nobody wanted to pay for the music, I'm pretty sure it would die sooner or later, but the community built around touhou music has became gigantic by this point, and not only in Japan, but many other countries as well. Why? No clue, help me find out :).
Sadly we don't have that many people working on their passion and hobbies, it feels like truly talented people are rather rare to spot, but maybe it's just me and my false opinion. For some reason I tend to believe that "whatever you do, there is always some 12yo asian that does that better" :).
Yeah HM also turned out to be giant success, and nowadays it's probably as strong as touhou in terms of music. TBH I also share your point of view - for some reason it's easier to focus on particular thing when you're listening to lyrics you don't really understand, so when I'm doing anything productive I always turn up a mix of Japanese and instrumental music :).

This guy, Zun must be incredible person! Admirable is how many things he can. Creating a whole game from nothing must be difficult and require a lot of skills for example in programming or drawing. For me these arrangements sound totally different from the original and I have a problem with find a similarity. In my opinion orginal theme is the best but but if I had to choose from these arrangements I would choose orchestral. Really nice topic :)

I think that this is just Japan strange thing, but this is charming there :) That they are creating something, what actually doesn't exist and make it real. And people love it. Not only from Asia, but from everywhere. It is catchy and it is a pleasure to listen to it (mostly). I'm glad I could read an article about that, thanks!
The jazzy one is pretty cool. It's pretty common where video game songs (mostly japanese I'd say) get remixed or covered by other people/bands - probably not on a scale like this one.
I think that is amazing that one person could create (in this world where everybody wants to be different from each other) something that almost everybody could suite in their taste. Of course, there are different version, but still it is one song. Of course that this is happens in Japan also matters.

I think that that guy is a new Leonardo da Vinci. If Leonardo would have a computer with the internet connection - probably something similar would have happened. What makes me curious the most - how much time does that guy spend practicing his art? I don’t believe in a talent. I believe in an amount of hours spent per day practicing.

I enjoyed the Vocal/J-POP genre. But the best for me was the original song. I’m not a huge fun of a Japanese music. At first, I was a bit skeptic - seeing the title of this article. But after 30 seconds of listening to original songs - I completely have changed my mind. This song invoked a feeling of a childish joy in me. It reminded me the songs from Sega and Dandy games I used to play with my parents when I was a kid. And now I’m listening to this song on repeat, putting comments to other articles in this blog. Thanks for new music which fits for a background while working.

It is impressing that one person can create so catchy and deep melodies which become top remade songs afterwards, however it is not something I am interested in. I have listened to all of the versions you have displayed and yes, all of them sounds similar and yet totally different, because they bring some new sounds and vibes to the table.
I said that it is not something that interests me very much, because I prefer different types of music. While I work I prefer classical music, indie folk or Red Hot Chilli Peppers :-) which I am a huge fan of. I also like to explore music and look for some new sounds on youtube, however I do not really search for this type of music or japanese games or anime melodies for that matter.
I am open when it comes to new songs and artists, but not really into listening different arrangements of one specific song.

Japanese music is well known for it's complex and characteristic approach to melody. It's something that many growing up there and listening to local music pick up involuntary. In my opinion, what makes this soundtrack so special is it's chant. It's easily to arrange it in many styles.

Of course, it's amazing that this song has so many versions. But is it really so unique? How about main melody from Mario or Mortal Combat?
Unknown said…
Some of them are nice but not really that awesome to me. I like EDM music (Eurodance the most) and metal. I don't know what to add.
I have played this some while ago and it's great! :D
And music there is also very good, it is amazing that they can make so many remixes of one song and more amazing is that it is all composed only by one person.
This arrangements are very immense and catchy and I like them very much.

what does really impress me, that he coded whole game buy his own.

I'm not a big fan of techno/ disco songs, but surprisingly I also can't listen to those songs. Possibly that can be caused by the fact I'm not so into Japanese culture. Anyway I can understand, that you are interested in this culture, what includes music too.
Really cool! I don't have any single favourite music genre, I'm open to nearly all of them and maybe that's why I like music initiatives like this one. This is something new, interesting and sounds good (I really enjoyed j-pop and jazz versions).
There are plenty of covers/remixes/remakes on the Internet, but usually they go in another direction. As a rule, the base of these kind of remakes is one of the songs of one of the super famous artists.
In this case what is nice, apart from the ear-catching music itself, is the idea. I'm certainly not an expert in this area, but original song seems to be just an ordinary song, which makes the whole remaking thing even more outstanding.

1. Yeah I think it is weird that you listen to it duuuuuude... ;)
2. I listen to disco polo. It reminds me of the times where I was going to REMIZA club and had lots of fun.
3. I didn't really enjoy the presented arrangements. However, I really appreciated the effort that you have put in writing this article :) . Unfortunately, it is definitely not my type of music :(

Well, its not my type of music, however I have to admit that rock version quite got me.

There is something special in Japan that their games usually have great soundtracks. Some of them are worshiped around the world. In example, the soundtrack from a game called "Silent Hill" is considered as a ingenious. It's hard to find such masterpieces outside Japan. It's maybe about their different attitude towards games. They're parents for video games after all, and games are a serious part of their culture. In our culture, games are often a way of making a lot of money, they aren't considered as an art. Maybe we should learn something in this matter from Japan?
Wow, I am really impressed with this "ZUN" guy and all the efforts he puts into his projects. I know how difficult it is to create a piece of good software. Everyone has ideas, but very few will be skilled and disciplined enough to take the concept and create a true masterpiece out of it.
Moving on to the music itself. Well, it is not my cup of tea. I don't think it's bad, but this music style doesn't match my taste.

Japan is full of mixed suprises. They are famous for diligence and precision in every area. It’s wonderfull how many processing is from one song.
1. I don't think much of it to be honest. I don't think it is too strange, but it's not really my thing.
2. I like most musical genres generally. I think in pretty much every type of music you can find something interesting, but 3 of my favorite band are metal.
3. I did like the first one, not really the Polish one.
You're welcome, and I'm happy that I managed to discuss something new for you - those things are always more interesting to read :).
ZUN actually can't draw... of course it's enough for his games, but it's nowhere near the quality you'd expect from an artist, yet his work is quite charming and definitely has it's own style...

:)
Yeah but those are already fan arts, official ZUN drawing is...

Totally agreed, some games are truly a masterpiece that shouldn't be forgotten, in terms of overall composition of code, art, music and all other factors.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
