Week 3 [4.04 - 10.04] Miracle fruit

Miracle fruit is a plant which makes other things taste different. It natively comes from West Africa, where it was chewed before meals for centuries. Europeans became aware of this plant in 1725 thanks to a French explorer Chevalier des Marchais The fruit itself has a mild tang (similar to cranberry) and a low sugar content.

So how does it work?
Miracle fruit contains a protein called miraculin which makes sour products taste sweet. Normally taste buds on your tongue translate chemical molecules into electrical signals. Each bud contains taste cells which detect flavours by binding themselves with molecules from your meal. When you eat miracle berry it binds its protein with your detectors preventing sweeteners from further bindings. Under neutral conditions miraculin blocs those receptors, but when you eat sour things, the environment in a mouth causes miraculin to change its molecular shape and reactivate the sweet receptors.

How strong is it?
Miraculin binds about 100 million times more intensely than sugar and about a million times more strongly than aspartame. That’s why drinking juice resembles drinking condensed syrup.

If you want to try the magic of miracle fruit you can buy tablets or powder of freeze-dried berry. It’s easily available in many online stores. Fresh fruits are hard to find because of a short shelf life and the fact that miraculin loses its properties when it’s heated.

Below you can find a video miracle berry taste test video:

I never heard about miracle fruit and I never tried to eat it. It is interesting how nature created so many interesting things. I can't imagine how sweet must this taste if it really is so much sweeter than sugar. It seems interesting that in fact it doesn't contain too much sugar.

For me it is rather for usage as food trick than for typical everyday use. I guess it is not too cheap and not easy available.
Recently I found new fruits as well, I was surprised when I found mango stone fruit as well as price... 30 euro per kilogram.

I am impressed. I have never heard about this fruit. I have never tried it, but your film shows that it must be a great experience. I have thought sugar is sweet, so sweet.
It is very interesting and intriguing. Although it looks like a inconspicuous fruit.
I want to try it. Do you know does it have any nutritional values? If it is a “miracle fruit” it may has other good properties.

The miracle fruit was mentioned in That Sugar Film. Damon said a very significant thing back then: that sugar makes everything palatable. We can eat the worst trash and be none the wiser. It's amazing that nature created such a fruit but it's also quite disconcerting to think how people can use it to their benefit.

Wow it's great! I never heard about them but I really want to try it :D I like try something new to eat. I wonder if these fruits are there any special nutritional properties or they belong to all these superfoods (you know goji berries, chia seed etc)? It must be really strange when you eat something what flavor you know very well and suddenly tastes differently. In my opinion this could be a cool experience.

I have never heard of miracle fruit berries, however by watching this video it seems like it's quite an experience. :)
Personally, I enjoy trying new types of food and various cuisines from all around the world, but in this case I don't really feel like trying it, especially when it influences the taste in a negative way. It is difficult for me to imagine that the taste of a product which I consume on the daily basis, would change completely. In my opinion the interesting part is that you can find such thing created by nature.

It is interesting food, I have never heard of it. The most interesting thing is that it seems like human will eat anything, if its sweet. It is probably some inheritance from our ancestors, but nowadays it might be more harmful, then helpful. And that is why sugar is added to some food products.

I never heard about that fruit before, but im not really tempted to try it. Sugar and sweet are not my favorite tastes
Unknown said…
Well, as everyone else I have not heard about this mberry. If it was available more easily I think I might try it. Unfortunately you can buy only tabs online so it is that miraculous to give it a try. Or I am just lazy.
I wonder how many more magical fruit hidden African lands. There never heard about this fruit, but the back of my head I always have a fear of trying things unexplored. Nice experiment, but I personally do not think try.

I have never heard about miracle fruit. This unusual how nature surprises us.
Probably there are still many undiscovered kinds of plants and animals by me and and even by scientists. Maybe I will try to eat it when I have the opportunity.
I hope the day will come when we'll have 3D food printers connected to our PCs, so that we'll be able to taste everything we read about! :)

I have heard before about this miracle fruit but I never had a chance to taste it. I really like to try new flavors and maybe in future I will try the features of this fruit. In Poland it's known as 'synsepal słodki' and I colligate that it's grow in Thailand, Taiwan and Florida (someone above asked) :)

Seems like good solution for kids, although it may introduce bad habit of eating only sweet things at the same time using it with disgusting but healthy food may encourage them to keep proper diet :D

I’m very surprised about its availability. I bought miracle berry tablets 6 years ago and paid around 45zl. It was widely available online. I don’t know why it has changed.
Unknown said…
Actually I have no idea about its nutritional values.

I bought It a couple years ago as a gift and have never tried it. It seems to be a great thing for parties. I also want to try it.
Oh, I have heard about this! I didn't know that it was a fruit though, I just stumbled upon some taste-changing pills listing on ebay or something and I wanted to try them ever since.
I was skeptical about the name "miraculin", it sounds like a special potion from a video game, but I researched it and it really is called that.
It would be really weird to feel the taste different to what we expected. Some time ago I have read a research on a group of people that were given jellies with different tastes and colors. When the jelly was pink and they expected raspberry flavour but it surprised them with a lemon taste, they were more likely to say that they didn't like the flavour, but if color matched taste, everything was better.
Thanks for your article, you refreshed my curiosity and I think I will try it soon!
Unknown said…
It only changes sour into sweet. I don’t think you can change the medicine taste into a pleasant one.
I actually knew about this fruit before, but I have never tried it. I'm really curious how it would affect the taste of high proof alcohol like vodka or even better rectified spirit.
Unknown said…
Pure alcohol is not sour so I don’t expect any changes. But as I know, after eating miracle berry, beer tastes like a sweet carbonated soft drink.
Unknown said…
Definitely. Wojciech Cejrowski in one of his videos showed how addictive sugar is. When people from wild tribes discover sugar they can’t resist themselves from eating a whole bag.
Unknown said…
Now that's an interesting article. I never heard about this fruit and it's cool to learn that something like that exists in the world. I wish I could taste it one day and see how it changes the taste of my favorite products. It must be great since it's sweeter than sugar :D I wonder if it can be used as a sweetener?
Unknown said…
I’ve already read an article about this research. I also know about a research in which testers had to try beverages with different colours. In spite of fact that it was the same beverage, one colours were tastier than others.
Unknown said…
Rather not, because you have to eat a miracle fruit before having a meal.

I think that fruit can be very important in changing the eating habits of many people. thought out and well used by scientists could eliminate problem of obesity which is caused by sweets. I just wonder if industry will let it to happen one day.. unfortunately i don't think so.

Receptors of sour and bitter taste on the tongue will be blocked after eating miracle fruit. In practice, this means that everything we eat over the next tens minutes will be received as sweet. At this time we can not grimace during eating a whole lemon, or try a dish which we do not like.
The effect is maintained for up to 2 hours - in this time we can experiment with different products and see how they taste in the sweeter version. However, if we drink or eat something warm, our taste buds return to normal.

Due to the low stability of miracle fruit we can not buy it in Poland. We can only obtain the tablets containing powdered fruit and in this way to check for yourself. But what is the point of doing that? I don’t see it as reasonable.

I want to try it so bad! I never heard about it before, but I will pursuit my new dream since I saw this video! Awesome! And maybe I will test myself on Kool Aid without Water and Sugar (with them it's pretty good!)

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
