Week 10 (08-14.12.14) Video mapping

Video mapping is a part of VideoArt.
Video mapping also known as projection mapping,  mapping, video mapping 3d, spacial augmented reality- they all mean the same.
What is the definition of „mapping”?
It’s a projection technology, which uses videoprojectors. The projection is displayed on an object. Of course an object must be mapped earlier. It is mapped for a better effect.
Simply “the display of an image on an arbitrarily complex surface”.
This phenomenon consists of art and technology.
Vizualization whitch will be displayed must be matched with the object well. Then the effect is amazing. A flat surface can become space as well.
Additionally, the cooperation of light and music is really important in this technique.

This is amazing mapping. It’s one of the best mapping which I’ve ever seen. Many people created this project: programmists, motion designers and many others.
„The first known instance of projection onto a non-flat surface dates back to the 1969 opening of the Haunted Mansion ride in Disneyland and very known Madame Leota.”

Disney was first to use a real videoprojection and he displayed it on the sculpture. He was a great man. He was a pioneer in many situations. He wasn’t only the first to use this technology, he also had the earliest patent in space. The patent was entitled: “Apparatus and method for projection upon a three-dimensional object“ . It described the system of a digitally painted image onto „ a contoured 3D  object”. Do you wont to see the description of this patent?
This is for you:

Where is videomapping used?
Vide omapping may be used for advertising, as the visualisation of music during a live concert, as scenery in the theatre, as simply art performance or as the decoration in a videoclip.
This is a videoclip of „Sweater”  Willow. It’s great. All scenery was displayed at three pleces. The boat and stool is real, but everything else is a projection.
You can see it too. It’s a backstage of the videoclip. It consists of many funny moments.

In Poland this technique appeared at the turn of 2007 and 2008 when the film about modul8 appeared on  YouTube. There was small scale projection, medium and big one. The small projection on s small object and huge projection on a big building.
First big scale video mapping took place about 5 years ago. Arkadiusz Nowakowski created video mapping and displayed it on the Raszyńscy Library in Poznań.
It’s not very good, but it was the first videomapping on a building in Poland.

Some foreign example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UxD1dr3TEM

It’s a Polish production again.
It took place at the Light Move Festival in Łódź. In my opinion it is really good. What do you think about it? Light combined with music beautifully
A few months ago this film appeared on  YouTube. I think that’s amazing.

Is videomapping the technology of the future?

If you can make it at home this is for you ;)

What do you think about video mapping?
Have you ever seen some video mappings?
Have you got a favourite video mapping?

I made my own video mapping for the Night of Museums in PJWSTK last year. It was not an easy animation to make. It took me a lot of time, nerves and trials. But the final effect was worth all the hard work. I am happy that my school gave me the opportunity to create and screen it. I think it was one in a lifetime chances and I will never forget it.
If you would like to see my video mapping, here it is:

I agree with you. Hardly to make it but effect can be amazing. I'm regretful that I didn't watch your videomapping in real.

Have you made your own video mapping? If yes, show us!!! :)
Unknown said…
Unfortunatelly not yet. My friends made video mapping for their bachelor. Here it is:

I have seen it live :) Their work is pretty impressive.
Unknown said…
Oh yes. In real it is more impressive than in the internet but great, that it was recording. Do you have a favourite mapping?
Unknown said…
I had the opportunity to see it live and it was really awesome! Glad I can tell it straight to the author. Amazing job, and the best thing at that museum night.

Videomapping seems to be very original and interesting way of advertising and
artistic expression. I have seen some works during Light Move Festival and I have
also done one for Night of Museum. I agree with Dominika, that sometimes it can
be really frustrating and time consuming.
I don't have my favourite videomapping, I think that is because low popularity of
this technique. However, it will probably change, as it is gaining more and more
recognition with every year.
Unknown said…
Simon which one did you see? Videomapping by Dominika? :D Dominika, you have a devotee! Great :D

I agree with you. Videomapping is probably frustrating and time consuming as every animation. But, do you agree with me that effect are usually really good?
Yo're right that this technique is still low popularity but every year this is more popular phenomenon.
Do you have a recording your mapping? I would like to watch it.

Videomapping is an great example of future art. I seen this once on Light Move Festival in Łódź and it leaves for me a mesmerizing impression. Specially this scene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlGeboQHIyg&hd=1) seeing live was just wow.

Warsaw fountain in Old Town for few years now is showing us something similar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8yMv7LOebI&hd=1) but I don't know that technology used there is the same?

Thanks for links. Good work( first link), but in my opinion the second part is better, more expressive, than the first. The first is a little boring for me.
Oh, the second one is great. I've never seen displays on it. I've seen only colorful light, not displays. It's really impressive. I'm regretful that I've never seen it in real :/
The same light and the same music is in the other town in Poland. Did you know?
In my opinion this is the same technology, but on the water is more impressive. In fact I'm not an expert in this technology, so I'm not sure.

I like this idea a lot. This was the first vidoe mapping I have ever seen, it sparked my curiosity and made me research more about this subject. The first one I saw in person was at Festiwal Światła in Wilanów. I must say I was very disappointed. Not only by the video mapping itself, but also because of organization and crowds of people going back and forth and disturbing the show for me. I found my friends' bachelor video mappings much more interesting (they were at Night of Museums earlier this year).

This is one of my favourite video mappings. The idea and aesthetic is beautiful. Watching this the first time gave me goosebumps.
I have never heard about video mapping or at least I did not know how this kind of animation is called. To me, video mapping is the great example how the art should develop. I mean, an art and a technology is in my opinion the perfect combination.

Moreover, I am very curious which software specifically is used to create such animation. Is it just program like 3ds Max, Houdini or something else?
I've seen a few times videomapping in my life. I've never heard about name "video mapping", but I saw this. For example I was in the Warsaw old town on the projection on the Staszic Palace building. I found a video from this event : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_fBLSiTAG4 . Generally, I like idea of video mapping, maybe I'll try this in future.
Unknown said…
I have seen first videomapping. It's very very good and so complicated. Other people said the same about Festiwal Światła in Wilanów. Oh yeah, I tottaly agree with you that this one gives everyone goosebumps. It's simply the best :)
Unknown said…
Thanks for your opinion about it. Special software to use for video mapping is:
Madmapper and of course Modul8.
Without it every programme which you use for annimation: after effects, cinema4D, Maya, ect.

Actually I'm developing real-time video mapping system for my master degree. This system will track objects so it you could do mapping not only on satatic objects, for example you could move boxes and the mapping pattern would adjust in real time. But sadly my project is in very early stage, so I have nothing to show ;) My favourite video-mapping is the one with face tracking(Omote), because it's similar to my concept.

I also seen a few times how this thing was done, but I was not aware of what it really was, however I saw it in the way of student work, so I don't know how really effective it is and etc, I would like to study something in that direction at least to be more involved in the topic and know about that technologie.
Video mapping seems like a really amazing and interesting form of art. Personally I am not very artistically driven so I wouldn't do it myself, but this does not mean I cannot enjoy the work of others. I might look into this subject more, since it's really great to watch. I really enjoyed the videos you linked here, thanks a lot!

I'm not into video mapping and I've seen only a few in my life. I completely don't get this kind of art or technology. Probably, in future, there will be more advanced techniques like holograps so you will be able to create video mapping with Godzilla destroying the building but for know that's too young technology as for me.

I really like concept of dynamic video mapping presented by Krzysztof in one of above posts and I would like to see it finished.

It's very interesting, that you didn't know name this technique. It's more popular year by year. I've never seen mapping from your link. It's very interesting.
I'm glad you like this idea. I hope, that you will try and I hope that it will be great work! I keep my fingers crossed!
Unknown said…
Oh Great! I'm really curious your project. I hope to see it in the future.
I've heard about real- time video mapping. It seems to be so difficult. Many V-j use this technique to create visualisation of music during a live concert. It's pretty impressive but very difficult I think. Good luck for your master degree! :)

I have a similar attitude towards video mapping as Michał. I've seen a couple already and I did enjoy them but there never was anything spectacular about them. However, the music video that you mentioned in your article was really fun to watch and I liked it a lot. I hope that in future, artists will have even better ideas and more skills or mediums to work with so that video mapping will keep on growing and surprising us.
Unknown said…
Have you seen films from presentation? Every film shows spectrum of mapping's possibilities. I have chosen this one which was the best or one from the best. Much information about that direction is in the internet. I recommend you many forums about videomapping. Btw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvvy86zvoX4 - this is tutorial how to make your own videomapping at home ;)
Unknown said…
Tell me, what kind of software do you use in your project?
Unknown said…
I think it is more impressive for people who are not very artistically- in particular huge projection on a big building. I'm glad You like my examples.
Unknown said…
I respect your opinion. Perhaps you' re right. I'm still waiting for evolution this technology. I'm sure that it will be more advanced and more impressive. I think we will be surprised of possibilities that technology.
Unknown said…
I'm convinced that will be as you wrote. Of course, it is always problem of sensitivity. I think everyone from us is other so his sensitivity is other as well. I hope you will find thing which will be really magnificent for you.
Unknown said…
In my opinion video mapping is amazing and earlier I don't know that for this kind of art is used for displaying only projector. It will be one of the most popular types of art in the future. It pays attention a lot of people because it is very effective. I have thought for this moment that video mapping is displayed only on buildings. So my favourite project is video mapping on girl face. It may have application in many productions such as the film

I totally agree with you. Certainly this technique will be one of the most popular kind of art in the future but I'm afraid that cost is too big for dissemination this technique. Maybe someone will create cheaper kind of projector in the future. I hope it.

Isn't the video mapping a smaller brother of cinema? I mean, if you substitute the building with a cinema screen...
The videos you posted here are really great and fun to watch. I believe creating those took a lot of effort, and hence i doubt there is much future for this technology. It can be a nice surprise in parties or some events, as it does make an impression! But will the costs of producing such art be low enough to convince investors?
Unknown said…
It's amazing. I bet it's another interesting way of expression for a lot of artists. I've some before projected on buildings, but those you presented in the article are a lot more impressive.

I really liked the idea of video mapping. It's interesting and very original and the videos you shared are really funny. I also think that this form of art will be more and more popular in the future.
Unknown said…
Unfortunatelly costs of producing this type of art are stil huge. I've written about it in post above. I'm afraid as you but I believe that next pioneer will appear and we will be happy next good idea.
Unknown said…
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you as other people who have written in posts above.

I' m so happy that you like my examples. I'm glad it's impressive for you.

I've seen it live too. Pretty BIG piece of nice and amazing work.

A very interesting subject. I've heard about it and seen it couple of times. The "early one" by Disney is my favourite (though it's not that advanced).

Check also this one:

Oh really interesting that your favourite is Disney projects. I like Madame Leota's voice. It's amazing- dark and gloomy but engaging. I have seen it. All are amazing and pretty impressive.

Surely, let's hope so :) that's why technology is amazing, it keeps evolving.

It is great form of art and looks amazing if done well. I had an opportunity to see video mappings two or three times but not so spectacular to remember it. I don’t have any favourite one.

Oh thanks for your comment ;)

This is one of my favorite video showing off that technology. Personally I think its and amazing concept which can be used in variety of ways, like for art projects. Recently I have seen one of those video mappings in Wilanow palace that made an impression on me by its combination of good music and visuals.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
