Week 7 (17-23 November): It's November! It's Christmas Time!

Let’s have a quick raise of hands! Who’s already feeling the Christmas spirit?

It’s barely middle of November and Christmas is already all around us. The minute we finished celebrating the 1st and 2nd of November, all the stores and malls lit up the lights and brought out trees dripping with ornaments. Even my inbox is filled with gift ideas, special holiday offers and guides to “The Perfect Christmas”.

Why is everyone in such a hurry to start preparing for the holidays? Of course it’s good to start looking for gifts for your loved ones ahead of time, simply because they will be well thought through and you could save money and your nerves, but with over a month to go the commercial aspect of Christmas just kills it for me.

It seems to me that we have lost the importance of this holiday. It no longer appears to be a family event, cultivating traditions and enriching our relationships with people around us. We get lost in all the things that we HAVE to do, everything has to be picture perfect. By the time that 24th of December comes, we will be sick and tired of Santa singing carols and the whole atmosphere can get even annoying.

When I was younger, waiting for Christmas started on the 1st of December, when I got my annual advent calendar. Of course as a kid I didn’t have to think about organizing anything but I can’t remember going to the stores so early and seeing holiday themed decorations.

How do you feel about the commercialization of this wonderful holiday? Is the shopping craze getting to you yet? What part of Christmas are you most excited about? When you finally start feeling the atmosphere?

For me it's a little different since I watch this whole situation a little from the third-persons perspective - I don't have big family Christmas, and I just buy a few little gifts usually a day or two before the Christmas Eve. The noition of Christmas shopping and being "first to get" something sounds ridiculous to me, but I can see how some people might actually enjoy buying something for their close ones and receiving gifts as well. It's just a little bit too commercialized for me, but that's mostly due to ridiculous ads like the one mentioned on this blog from Zlote Tarasy.

Having been to Asia, however, I know what commercialized Christmas really means -there people are shopping crazy, buying all they can, and t hey don't even celebrate real Christmas! That's something to think about.

Personally, I buy things after Christmas, after bonus salary and when people are selling unwanted gifts on Allegro, stores have post-Christmas sales etc. ;-)

I think I'm rather resistant to this problem :) In fact, I quite like this time of a year :) It is magical to me, and in my opinion all the city, shops, everything, look kind of magical :) I know that starting so early is big exaggeration, but I like winter, I like snow, I like this time of year, so I don't have anything against it :)
I was ill for last 2 weeks and I didn't come out of house, and when I saw few days ago that our city is getting christmas decorations it has touched me in this good way :) I love christmas :D

BTW have you seen this commercial? That was first "christmas" connected thing I have seen this year. It is so beautiful, really touching :)

Maybe because Christmas is not about gifts and buying things to me, but about atmosphere :)

I do not like the idea that Christmas fever starts in November. I do not feel Christmas spirit when the leaves are still colorful. I start feeling the atmosphere after 6th of December or when there is white snow and when it is cold outside. Advertisings in November with the best Christmas offers and presents annoy me. I feel that it is necessary to buy gifts for people we truly want to give presents to and not for everyone.
I agree that nowadays we forget about the meaning of this holiday. Everyone is so stressed out about proper gifts, looking good during the eve or preparing tasty meals that we do not remember about celebrating being together.

I don't have a problem with those commercials. I don't watch TV and lately don't listen radio too much. Last time I was in mall I wasn't bombarded by Christmas themed adverts. Obviously, I noticed that Christmas rush starts earlier every year, but I don't wait for Chrimstas anyway so I don't care. To be honest I can't wait until November, December and January are past me.

I know what you mean, 6th of December or organizing "Mikołajki" at school usually got me in the the moof for Christmas too. Fluffy white snow, which unfortunately lately comes after Christmas, is just like a cherry on top :)

Thank you for showing us this video. It's absolutely adorable and cute :)
For many years the christmas holidays never bored me. It's always a great time, despite the repeatability. Commercialization depends of ourselves. The economy and market works in this way - supply and demand. Personally, I start to feel the atmosphere of Christmas a few days before Christmas Eve, when the snow falls.
hahah I'm ready!!!
Same with my, when I was little beggining of Deceamber was the begginig of Christmas time. Now it's like in the middle of November. I don't mind, I like this athomosphere. But I am convinced that salesmen don't give a damn about holiday. They just want to sell as many stuff as possible. Even the sign on the attached picture says " Wyścig po prezenty". It's rather sad that for many christmas equals present race. In my family we don't give each other big presents. We usually give a book or something like that. And to be honest I buy those presents as soon as possbile in order to avoid all thah crowd in the shops. Actually when decamber comes I try to stay as far from shopping centers as I can. I only take advantages of sales at the end of the month. Discount is so atractive then that it pays off. I'm really excited about light instalations all over the town, especailly on "Trakt Królewski". And you? WHat is your favourite part Julia?:)
You're righ Dominika. Presents really took over the Christmas....I also had Mikołajki. Did you also used to draw a person to whom you were supposed to prepare a gift?
OMG Natalka this commercial is so adorable I must show it to my sister immediately:D

I love these preparations! Gingerbread cookies, houses, christmas tree, christmas songs...

Christmas is commercialized when we let it be that way (where there is demand there will be supply) and I'm personally experiencing it as a good opportunity to make delicious things and create a warm atmosphere :) I don't mind having it sooner than in December as it ends too fast for me then.
2 months of christmas season? Why not? I'll have time to make more types of gingerbread cookies!

For me the season starts with the first snow (even if it will happen in October) or (when there is no snow but I already have christmas mood) when I say so :D

Do you want to feel some christmas? Check that out!

I feel this is weird. It's true that shops start selling christmas products too early, but why people bought so fast?
what I feel about the commercialization? For me its ok, cause this holiday atmosphere in my cases is independent from shopping.

In Christmas time the best part is eating part I think :D
I am afraid that in 21st century where consumerism rules western countries everything you mentioned Dominika is inevitable. Nowadays, the quality of our life is determined by what we own rather than what we do. Therefore, It is natural that people tend to buy more because simply they want to feel that they have better quality of life.
I would say that the best part is meeting someone who you haven't seen for a while.

Comercialization wasn’t , when I was a child. Then time was stopping itself. It was magical and (fortunatelly) long time. I remember, when I was looking for a gift. I have two brothers and sister. Then I didn’t understand idea of Christmas. We all together were feeling this time very long before.
Now, unfortunetelly the spell has been broken :/ All that commercialization brakes this which is the most important in Christmas time.
It’s amazing time. I, as Christian- Catholic, strive about born of God, not only gift, and other trivial thing. For me the most important time is when I go to the Church in the midnight. Then take place the most important thing of this holiday. Of course this is the huge symbol, but for us- Christians- Catholics it’s very obvious and important. I think, that I’m resistant for all that shopping craze.
Moment, when I finally start feeling the atmosphere? It seems to be moment when I sit down to supper with twelve dishes , moment when I’m together with my family.

Well, any occasion to have fun is good I'd say, so why not Christmas? You got to have a few days off, you can spend it with people that are close to you, that's a good enough reason to celebrate don't you think? :)

Why would you say, that salespeople are not into Christmas? If I had a shop of my own, I'd really enjoy holidays, because the increased sales would mean I can spend more too :) Plus you can get all the decorations and put the people in a nice mood. It's all a matter of perspective I'd say.

Well, wouldn't it be great if holidays lasted whole year long? I guess it wouldn't, cause you couldn't tell the difference then. So there is all this big fuss about Christmas - presents, preparations, each year all shops starts their sales sooner then before... and isn't that good? Imagine the sales would start in the weekend before the holiday. Ugh, that would be a real massacre for both the customers and the salespeople. So the possibility to do some shopping a month or two before is a good thing in my opinion. People tend to nag about Christmas or St. Valentines day because it's waay easier to be grumpy rather than try and be nice to others. Nobody forces anyone to celebrate or to buy presents, on the contrary, you get to choose whether you want to get in the mood, or is it just BAU for you.
It's true that such festivities have become heavily commercialized, but isn't that the natural course of the modern world? I'm not being cynical, but this just doesn’t bother me at all. I have my laughs when I go shopping in the begging of November and see all the Christmas stuff, but frankly I don't see care much about. Let the people „celebrate” however they want I say.

I think that November is really an early time to begin Christmas. All shops and the city centers are already decorated because it attracts a lot of tourists who want to take a picture and feel the magic of Christmas. Everything is already decorated because the owners see that it attracts a lot of people who, as occasion offers, will buy some presents or do other shopping

As I've seen in previous comments like to see Christmas decorations early because it makes Christmas time longer for them. So if someone likes it, I don't mind it either.
I also don't mind it because I mostly ignore these decorations and commercials, as earlier I have different things on my mind. And when Christmas is getting closer and I must start thinking of some preparations, I'm getting this feel naturally.

I am happy you like it :)

I start feeling Christmas atmosphere when Christmas tree is in my house and I can smell it. I hear carols on the radio. It seems to me that There is a magic Christmas time. I don't pay attention for Christmas commercials and Christmas decorations in shop centers.

I think if it makes you happy then you should put them up when ever you want.I've been walking round Warsaw last days and all the decorations look marvelous! And it's not even finished:D

If to speak about an atmosphere I can say that in Warsaw I am already feeling this spirit and I think that it is wonderful. As for me I am a fan of holidays with great people, with holliday atmoshpere and this magical spirit, however I understan that commercionolized approach in some wayspoils people, for many of them Christmas is not about spirit and simple happines, but more about presents.

I don't like the idea of early Christmas celebration, it bothers me when I see Christmas decorations almost two months before it. It is an almost painful realisation on how much more do I have to wait for the most lovely and wonderful holiday of the year.
I hate Christmas shopping, but maybe because I hate crowded places. I have recently gone to Złote Tarasy and it was already a nightmare. And it won't improve for the next 5 weeks. In USA there are Christmas shops open all year round, but it doesn't make the Christmas fever any smaller, I think. For me Christmas is a home and family feast. I love spending time on making Christmas tree decorations (I have very ill-mannered cats and it is cheaper to make new ornaments every year and, as it turns out, they look way cooler than some regular glass balls: we have orange and lemon slices, candies, marshmallows and gingerbread on our tree), cooking, setting up the table, packing the presents, chilling in front of the fireplace, taking walks in the snowy fields... Oh, I can't wait, I've already started listening to Christmas music!

I never liked commercialization of christmas and especially commercials in November. I am not really Christmas person, not anymore. Whole magic is gone since I acknowledged that santa claus is not real you know?

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form.
