Week 3: Non verbal communication skills

Conversation is one of the most important ways to get to know the other person. Even having more communication tools cannot  replace face to face contact. There is no way to tranfer emotions by text or phone call and sometimes it causes misunderstandings. The body language is extremely important here. Everyone who depends on a good image, who wants to understand other people or achieve their goals more easily should read this article.

Scientists came to the conclusion that what we say is not as important as how we say it, which is indicated by our body. Especially in emotional, hard conversation words just can't express everything, such as messages sent by our eyes, face, hands, body movements, gestures and voice. Here are the most important things about non verbal communication.

1. Eye contact

An eye can threaten like a loaded gun; or can insult like a hissing and kicking; or in its altered mood, by beams of kindness, make the heart dance with joy.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Eye contact is the strongest form of nonverbal communication, it helps us 'read' from people’s' minds. Everyone knows that maintaining eye contact with other interlocutor is very important. It makes us more confident and trustworthy. Usually if we meet someone who  lowers his eyes we may think that he is hiding something and we don't trust him, even if he is just very shy.

This is probably the most important element of body language , so it makes sense to work with it in the first place .

Facial expressions

We are communicating by the whole face . Movements of  eyes, eyebrows , lips , the nose , the chin or the forehead show something about how we feel. Muscle tensions indicate the emotional states of joy, sadness , fear or anger. Those are things that we usually can't control, but you can make your partner understand you better by your face movements.
Smiling warmly indicates satisfaction with the meeting and makes other person feel good in our company. What is more, we should try not to overdose our reactions, we should act naturally because it express our empathy.  Trying to work on it you could start with a mirror.

Hands

The hands play a very important role in communication . It often is easier to explain our words. Imagine how conversation would  look like with your hands along your body- it looks very unnatural. There are gestures expressing emotions. In some cultures, they are used more, in some less. That is why politicians learn to do, e.g. the"Pyramids" of their  hands. If you want to be understood and seen as a cultural person try to keep your hands free at your chest height lightly moving them, adequately  to what you say. If you keep something in them , do not move it too much, because it distracts listeners.

Posture

We speak with our whole body. When someone makes distance or stands closer to us, we do the same. If someone crosses his arms, it shows he is not comfortable or does not want to talk to us. Knowing rules for the body language will help you not only in your personal life, but in business.

Here is an interesting presentation made by a social psychologist- Amy Cuddy.

Maybe you have already worked on your body language .
Do you have your own techniques of self-control ?

Nonverbal communication skills are very important in everyday life. We use gestures unwittingly mostly to emphasize our words or showing emotions. They can enrich a relationship and make us look better - the way that we speak, loud or fast, how we speak, how close we stand to each other. Those skills show a person better than a language, they are more genuine, as we sometimes don't control them. We can see if our interlocutor care about the subject, if he/she is truthful. There is, however, a cultural barrier - in different cultures body language corresponds with different meanings. For example, the thumb-up sign can stand for "OK" in most cultures, but in Latin America, Greece or Russia is simply the same as a middle finger sign. Beside that barrier, nonverbal communication skills can be a great basis to know other person.

It is a very interesting topic - one that I go back to frequently and try to keep to all the proper rules, until I forget about them entirely. I know that people often judge others by their body language more than by anything else, so it's good to work on those habits for own good. It's one of those skills at which you'll get progressively better and in the end it's very rewarding as soon as you find out how much you can influence other people just by using different body language mode.
I think, the nonverbal communication is very important for human, because by this skills we can fell every emotions which are blowing out from other person while conversation. We should also observe that, the 80 years ago the dictators were able to skilfully using nonverbal communication to agitate people. For me this kind of communication, human kind needed to doesn’t be stiff while conversation and don’t acted like a walking speaker, from another side we couldn’t allow us to overmuch our gesticulation, cause the others could recognize us as insane person.
Body language or non-verbal communication is very complicated part of psychology. The hardest thing is just to read the emotions and intentions of the people. Professionals can manipulate and cause incorrect understanding of other person to get some benefits. This knowledge of some communication techniques could have a big influence during the negotiation or public speaking. It is worth to look at the speeches of politicians to notice that. Each element and gesture is almost perfect. Perhaps not in Poland but in American politicians you see it clearly. Amy Cuddy showed in her presentation various examples of animal behaviour. For me the best animal example is a dog and its tail. It’s very simple. If a dog wags tail to the right and to the left, it means that it’s happy. When it has lowered and curled tail, it means that it's afraid or in pain. It’s a pity that it isn’t that easy with people.

When I was younger I read the book on body language. it was fascinating, and I wanted to learn more about it. Eventually I found other things to work on, and forgot about whole thing.
This article reminded me about this. I'll definitely go back to study some more of that, unfortunately, this article didn't give me more information. I new all of this stuff, and most of it everyone knows subconsiously.
Anyway, there are buisness studies, how to act in non-verrbal way, to close the deal. I think that's amazing, how you can manipulate people by knowing body language, and how to use it for your benefit...

From communication skills depend on our success or failure, satisfaction in private and professional life. Sometimes our body language is able to convey more than words. If we want to express our emotions only body language can help us the most. The important thing is the ability to control emotions, for example, during the interview too strong expression of emotions through gestures and strange grimaces on the face, we can not get a job. I think that a person lifelong learning techniques to communicate with other people. I am all the time working on this how I talk to people, and the technique of self-control in my case is three seconds of silence.
Apparently during communication non-verbal messages play a very important role. Being part Italian myself I can certainly agree with that, since Italian people are known for their rich non-verbal communication. Anyhow it is true that by looking at someone's behavior we can tell a lot about his feelings and the true meaning behind his words. I mean that's what irony and sarcasm are about, right? I believe it's much easier to tell a lie with words than with your body: if someone knows what to look at, they will most certainly know when somebody is telling the truth.

I always try to remember about basic “rules” during presentations and meetings at work but without proper training controlling all your moves, eyes and face expression is really hard. I never trained it but maybe if I have such opportunity I will try to learn something new. For sure it is very useful knowledge for everyone even in everyday life.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
