Nootropic are drugs, supplements, and other substances that may improve cognitive function, particularly executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation, in healthy individuals. The name comes from the word “noos,” meaning mind, and “tropein,” meaning to bend or toward. But what specific requirements they must meet?
Nootropic must:
- enhance memory and learning ability
- help the brain function under disruptive conditions
- protect the brain from harmful chemical damage
- improve neuronal firing mechanisms
- lack any sedative, stimulant or toxic effects
Introducion of coffee to Europe was an important moment in history of nootropics. It improves state of mind and better cognitive function in many people. In fact, the effects of coffee on many people resulted in this ever-popular drink being dubbed “Satan’s drink” until the Pope gave it a try and changed his mind about the evil inside the coffee beans: He blessed it to make coffee-drinking “safe” for the public.
In fact, there are a lot of types of nootropics. I found a publication, where it was listed about 30 types of it!
You must know, that there are natural nootropics, like this discovered in India and China and also some synthetic. The goal of taking nootropics is simply to obtain specific desirable cognitive effects. It’s important to know that how (and how often) you take nootropics will affect your outcomes. Your brain chemistry and certain chemical compounds interact in complex ways, and so the same substance taken at different doses or at different times can lead to different effects. So there are some rules you should follow.

However, everyone is affected differently, and at too low a dose, the main effect might not be noticeable. The key is to find an optimal dose that works for you. Taking two or more nootropics at the same time to enhance their effects. It has become popular to combine nootropics for two reasons:
- Some nootropics are compounding, which means their effects are stronger combined than when taken separately.
- Also you can take more substances to gain different effects at the same time, for example: improve memory and boost energy.

To sum up:
- You should remember that there are natural and synthetic nootropics- natural are less effective but have fever side effects
- While taking nootropics you should remember about quantity, frequency and cycling
- You can combine nootropics to enhance effects
- You should always make your own research about dosing, combining, side effects and actual effects
- And remember – nootrops won’t make you a super human – they will help you in life but won’t learn for you

Yes, I've heard about it before. It was called 'Sesja' and it was popular during exams, but I don't really think it was working.
2. Have you ever had contact with nootropics? if not, after reading this article, did you become interested in this topic?
No, I've never had a necessity to take nootropics, and I'm still not interested to get to know better with these pills.
3. what's your opinion about synthetic substances that support brain? Do you think they are unhealthy? Do you think natural substances are better than synthetic ones?
I'm not convinced to them but maybe if I try these I would agree. But for now, I don't believe in their efficiency. For me, they are unhealthy. How could they not be, if they are full of chemical's sources? We are surrounded by harmful factors, why should we also get it voluntarily? If you have to poison yourself, do that by natural substances at least. It's a little better choice.
2. Yes, I drink coffee.
3. They are usually natural. I would drink coffee, maybe smoke weed, eat some natural stuff. But I would never try stimulants like cocaine or meth or any other kind of synthetic crap.
Yes, I have heard of such substances but did not know that they have a professional name. I learned about these substances when I wanted to stimulate my brain to increase its productivity while passing the matura exam.
2. Have you ever had contact with nootropics? if not, after reading this article, did you become interested in this topic?
Yes, I tried these substances once, but I didn't notice any stimulation or improvement in my concentration. Initially, taking the pill fooled my body into the placebo effect.
3. What's your opinion about synthetic substances that support brain? Do you think they are unhealthy? Do you think natural substances are better than synthetic ones?
I don't think these substances work at all. As described in point 2, I took it, tried it, but did not get any results. Who knows, maybe I was doing it wrong?
I've heard about them a few years back, when it was a big topic. Major self-improvement figures like Tim Ferris advocated taking them and quoted massive improvements in life and knowledge acquisition.
2.
I know noopet, since it was the easiest to obtain. I am not really convinced right now about taking them, since there is no real scientific evidence about it's effectiveness and health risks linked to taking it.
3.
I think that when it comes to increasing cognitive performance they key is to get a healthy amount of sleep, having an active lifestyle, balanced out diet and not using drugs or alcohol. If someone is doing all of those things, they will certainly notice better mental clarity.
Well, I heard of them, but I didn't realized that they were called nootropics.
2. Have you ever had contact with nootropics? if not, after reading this article, did you become interested in this topic?
I had contact with most popular ones e.g. nicotine and caffeine. I haven't taken any pills that were nootropic. After reading this article I will look into this more and maybe try something else
3. what's your opinion about synthetic substances that support brain? Do you think they are unhealthy? Do you think natural substances are better than synthetic ones?
Well, I think that it depends on the substance separately. If amphetamine is nootropic substance then you should take it very carefully because it's a drug and frequently usage will damage your health. But in other cases I guess that there is no difference between natural and synthetic nootropics.
2. Since I don’t know a lot about them, I don’t think I have except for the ones in coffee. Honestly I didn’t understand much from the article so need more research to discuss this topic.
3. As I said before it’s hard to judge based on information given here only, but overall I tend to trust natural stuff over synthetic if otherwise is not prescribed by a certain doctor\specialist.
2. I didn't really had any contact with it (beside incredible movie listed above). I'm sure I'll do some more research in that topic, as it sounds incredibly interesting. Enhancing our senses? It's sounds so futuristic, yet it's already here. After I do my research, who knows, maybe I'll try it someday.
3. I have nothing against substances enhancing our brain, as long as it safe to use. Why should we limit ourselves as science is helping us out? How would it be different than taking regular (medical) drugs to enhance our healing? I guess (but as I mentioned, I have no expretise), biggest threat of nootropics is decreasing our natural brain work. It could go like with testosterone. Suplementing testosterone lead to decreasing natural production of it.
I also do not think that something like "sesja" works, most often they are strange mixtures that are not well thought out, it is better to choose the supplements yourself
@Roman Dubovyi
I would not compare nootropics to drugs, they are designed to repair or support the brain, drugs allow it to work better but break it, just like other organs
@Paweł Bluszcz
And what substances have you tried? nootropics do not work temporarily, in addition, the basis is good sleep, proper diet and practicing some sport. Supplementation usually lasts 2 weeks - 2 months depending on the substance and the effects can be noticed during this time
@Viktor Ryś
I 100% agree with the last point, supplements should be an addition when you lead a correct lifestyle, if it is incorrect, supplements will not help
@Piotr Jarzyński
amphetamine itself is not a nootropic, I know that adderall is popular among students in the US, it is an amphetamine derivative that is prescribed for people with ADHD so they can focus, many students without ADHD abuse it to get better results and then become addicted to it to to the point that they cannot work without an adderall
