Week 7 [6.05 – 12.05.2019] Zero Waste Lifestyle Or how to save our planet

"Americans are 5% of the world’s population and produce up to 35% of the world’s garbage” - the quote I have heard on one British TV show, and it stuck in my memory. “There is an Island formed with plastic trash in the Pacific that is 3 times bigger than France” scares me even more. How this could happen and what we can do with this?
For me, personally, everything started last summer, when I started to see all these huge environmental issues everywhere. Did you know that 90% of all the plastic that ever produced still exists? So, I’ve asked myself: what can I do with it? Then, the golden “Reduce, reuse, recycle” came to mind. So, I have started recycling my garbage, segregating it. I have found a thermo cup at my kitchen and stopped taking a coffee “to go” without it. After some research, I have found out about the so-called Zero Waste lifestyle. So, what is it? It is basically the number of improvements in your normal lifestyle that may help to save the planet. We basically try to consume as little of different products and produce less waste. There are some examples, where people consumed a cup of trash in 4 years! (You mango and look into your garbage bean now and see how many cups are in there. And, no matter what they say, 1 person can make a difference.
What should I do to go Zero Waste?
First of all, no hurry. You can always catch up with all the details, but there are five easy steps to make a huge difference:
  1. Use your own cup/bottle for your take-out coffee and water.
  2. Stop buying plastic bags during your groceries, use your own shopping bag instead.
  3. While buying fruits/vegetable stop using tiny-tiny plastic bags, you can always put label directly on your fruit instead
  4. Start recycling. It is not so hard to put your plastic and packaging into the separate container.
  5. Switch to bamboo/paper/metal goodies. (For example, you can use bamboo toothbrushes and carton-based cotton swabs.)
It is not so hard to start, but in the end, you will find yourself doing more and more about your conscious lifestyle. In the long run, protecting our planet - is not such a bad option. you will necessarily notice how positively it influences your life. you will be even able to save some cash!
This topic is very huge and full of different interesting aspects. The best way to start your journey - is to find a mentor for this. Then you will be able to learn all the tips and tricks of this lifestyle and everything about zero-waste alternatives of our daily goods.
Questions:
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
3. What will be your first step into conscious life?

People who will do think like that is a good people, what about me, i am lazy like all the world, world need to take some rules or to thanks with something to people who do this
2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
World have a lot of problems and i dont understand why plastic problem are so overhype, 2019 and there are more than 40 active conflicts around the world at the moment.
3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
develop a plastic bullets?

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
honestly, I don't know. recently I saw on TV as a teacher in Norway practicing this. Clothes, food , and other things he sells in a thrift store. I'm not ready to eat chicken legs and expired canned food yet.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?

In Germany, have long practiced the surrender of plastic bottles in machines that are in every store and you get for 1 bottle of 25 cents. In the hotel where I rested my staff told me that do not use straws and many vacationers are outraged, perhaps they don’t understand the scale of the problem.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
I try not to buy water in disposable plastic bottles, but use special bottles made of food metal or solid reusable plastic. I also don't like the coffee lids we take with us.
Heard about Germany and plastic bottles thing. Poland definitely needs it! We never had problems with glass bottles because people can get money for recycling them. So if there would be something like this for plastic...
Plastic bullets still would hurt I guess... But the idea is nice:)

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
I try to live like this all my life. In my family we always care about nature, ecology and Earth. Right now we can see how damaged is our planet because of people and our responsibility is to take care of it for the next generations.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
I asked that question in the beginning of this course. The problem starts in our minds, in everyday choice and small gestures to choose products with responsibility and awareness and trying to keep world around you us clean.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
For me, the most important thing to carry on is not using any kind of plastic: bottles, shopping bags, disposable dishes. Those small decisions are the easiest way to start change for the better but also the most important and decisive move we can do everyday.
You cannot get rid of all the wastes at once, it all went too far already. Also, in my opinion, it is not anywhere near possible to combine mass production and zero wastes. In fact, all those who shout in favor of reusable bags instead of plastic, well... They are also need to be manufactured. Aaaand, in order to compensate wastes generated by production of one reusable bag against one plastic, the first has to be used seven hundred times. This topic is as controversial as many severe problems facing our planet. At some point leaving it seems more and more reasonable idea.
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
This is a very good idea! I have been trying to live for a long time and function in such a way. Unfortunately, it does not always work out, but I am glad that I can contribute to the reduction of waste generation on our planets. Unfortunately, most people do not see that the waste that we generate not magically disappear, just surround us.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
I have already mentioned this in previous articles, but the best idea would be to reduce the use of plastic to a minimum. The EU is already slowly restricting the use of plastic, but one of the supermarkets took very beautiful steps. Lidl began packing its vegetables in natural or at least biodegradable packaging instead of plastic. This is a very interesting and useful initiative that other producers should start to follow.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
I do not have to take the first step, because I made it many years ago, when practically I stop buying things wrapped in plastic ;)
1. I think it is normal to produce rubbish. however, we should pay a lot of attention to what we do with them later. I'm not sure but it seems to me that it is easier to process a plastic bottle than to produce a new glass one. Of course, the glass bottle can be washed and used again but once they are much heavier and do not crumple and transport can be more expensive than plastic recycling. I would reason in this direction.
2. Similar to the first answer. Plastic itself is not bad and it gives excellent recycling possibilities. We just have to look after and improve this process.
3. Choosing the right solutions to help in the reuse of resources. For example, choosing the right garbage collection company.

When it comes to Zero-Waste lifestyle I see that recently many individuals started to lead this type of lifestyle just because they start to realize how important it is to stop polluting earth that much. When it comes to the problem with plastic I guess we should find a way to just use something else than that or start using something that will last for more that one use for example water bottles. But it will be a really big problem. To be honest many people think that we have problem with cans because there is so many of them but they don't realize that plastic is even worse. I guess the biggest conscious would be to just start with something just because noone will start from big changes. Even stop using straws and packing your items you just bought into so many plastic bags. When people will start with that and they will stick to it they can try someting harder.

The topic of plastic and waste is one of the most popular now. They talk about it literally everything and it's great. After all, the more everyone will talk about it, the more people will become interested and will begin to treat everything more carefully. I will not say that I am an expert in the fight for the environment, but I do the most standard actions:
I don’t eat a with disposable dishes,
I don’t use plastic water tubes and bottles (I have a glass bottle and an iron tube),
sort out the garbage
and try Carry your shopping bag to not buy plastic bags in the store.
As for me, these are not complicated actions that can be performed by anyone who cares a bit.

1. It seems to me it's hard to do it in this moment.
We live in times when it is difficult to get rid of plastic packaging
2. It is a huge problem. We poison our land ourselves. Global warming is increasing, which can be noticed even in Poland.
3. I try to live consciously all the time. He sorts the garbage, I try not to use plastic bags. I drink water from a kettle with a filter, rarely I buy water in a bottle.
i believe that zero waste lifestyle is an incredibly selfish and irresponsible choice, only an egocentric and incompassionable person can make. World has problem with trash that is true, but also world has problem with unemployment in many parts of it, why instead of stopping throwing trash around we don't make a whole industry of collecting and recycling trash? That would make milions of jobs, and won't force people into changing their "thrash throwing" tendencies. My first step into consious life is to actually think about alternative solutions and make my own decisions, instead of following what i am given to.
Oh my God! You can be a role model for anyone who is dreaming about going eco. Happy that there are people on this course who are aware of the problem. It is also really nice that your family educated you like this.
Of course this topic is really controversial, and I've seen a great video on the topic, the one of "Adam ruins everything " videos. It pulled up all the controversial parts on the topic. But still it feels better to do something about it. Also, I have read an article about one young scientist ( age - 21 , don't remember the name) , who has invented a method to clean our oceans of plastic really fast (around 7 months). So there is always hope.
Happy to know that you have been reducing the consumption of plastic for years!
It is really exciting to know that Lidl is doing such thing. As the matter of fact, I have been living on the same block with Lidl supermarket, but have been there only once. I should definitely visit it more often!
Unfortunately, not all of us are really in charge of "choosing the right garbage collection company", because some people live in dorms, some are renting a room or a flat.
I am happy to tell you that most of plastic goods are not recyclable at all, so, the glass is still much more Eco than plastic.
I think because world has a lot of recycling to do, that is swimming at our oceans at the moment...
You can start with tiny tiny steps, but if you are aware of a problem and you are an open- minded person, you will get there someday...

I agree with the fact that we should reduce waste production. They are convenient for companies, but not good for the environment. Let's fight together for a better world.

There is too much plastic in the world. We should segregate and process everything! The amount of plastic is already too large. Maybe you need to burn it and turn it into something useful.

I have already taken my first steps! Sorting garbage, save water and use energy-saving bulbs.
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?

I've heard about it. I think people, who live with this lifestyle are very nice and hardworking. As for me, I feel not prepared to start living such a life.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?

I think humanity should consider some rules, start investing more time/money/resources in this problem. This problem is a huge one and we should start dealing with it now. Maybe, we need some new technologies to deal with it.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?

I am trying to minimize the daily use of plastic. So, not to use plastic bags/bottles etc. I would say it is not a big part, but a very important one.
I think great idea was introduced in US where in some stores there are no bottles with drinks. In stead you can take your own bottle from home and use dispencer to fill it. It makes you reuse it not produce more and more trash. Yet, i still think that most problems in Poland causes power plants. I think that should be 1st thing we should concider to change. But for that i already do most of stuff pointed above.
This is an interesting topic for discussion. In fact, this is a very deep problem. But please pay attention to the fact that garbage is money. I am Ukrainian and watched the trend of recycling in Ukraine. Previously, all the garbage was thrown into one pile. It was necessary to dig a deep hole to fill it soon. This trash remained there to rot for many years. But now the situation has changed. For example, plastic. Plastic can be recycled. If you collect ordinary plastic, not crushed (it can be plastic bottles), then the price will be low. But if it is crushed, the price will grow three times. So, people who were poor are getting richer. This is the real story of my life. I support this saying that it costs less to use plastic things. But look at the store shelves, everything is made of plastic here, each package. It is painful to look at it. There is another problem. It turns out that in order to make a paper bag, more harmful substances are released. And here is the question to which I do not know the answer. But it seems to me that it is necessary to instill in everyone the idea of plastic processing. I, as a unit of society, sort garbage. But I noticed that the companies that take the garbage interfere with it all together, plastic with other garbage. This is not good.
1.You surely should at least try follow zero-waste ideas but isn't cleaning up oceans etc. more important issue in case of saving planet?
2.I think it isn't as big of a problem as they picture it in media. However, recycling plastic is something people should do better. The fastest change would be if the biggest companies like Coca-Cola would use different material for bottles. The problem is that this isn't something easily doable.
3. I'm already aware of ecological problems and I try to minimize the waste me and my family produce. Do I live conscious life?
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
I dove deep into this lifestyle when i came to Poland. My girlfriend is a nature-lover, so after few conversations between us we decided to do more for our planet and for the enviroment.
2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
I read a lot about this plastic problem and i can say that we are struggling. Few days ago i saw the picture with people, who collect plastic all over their town, recycle it and create slippers. That is one of huge amount ways how we can use it.
3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
I have a lot of plans for future. One of them will be creating more recycling systems that will help our world to be better than now.
1. I think that this is a very good idea. From one side, it requires a lot of sacrifices from us.
But on the other hand, we gain a healthier life free from pollution.
2.Sure to segregate garbage and use secondary plastics. Another way is to use biogredal straws and bottles that have a quick distribution.
3.Control the consumption of raw materials such as plastic. Do not waste water and start to segregate garbage. I think it's enough to start
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
The first thing that occurred to me: "Damn, it will be difficult." Obviously, to start a similar lifestyle you need to get out of your comfort zone. But at the same time, it is a very brave and correct way of life.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
Unfortunately, it is obvious that most people do not care what happens on the planet after their death and they will not change anything in their lives. Therefore, I believe that the government is responsible for creating the conditions and forcing people into such a way of life.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
Maybe buy a bamboo toothbrush) and think about using my eco bag to buy vegetables.
Very interesting subject. Answering your questions:

1. In my point of view this is excellent idea but not for me. Why? Because usually I am lazy person and secondly I do not have conditions to segregate trash. Plastic bags? I have my own plastic bag or backpack and go shopping. This is my way.

2. Really I do not care about world’s plastic, to be honest. But after long thought, humanity should deal with it by limiting the production of plastic and replacing it with better material, for example mentioned bamboo or environment-friendly material.

3. Honestly, I won't make any step to do this.

Zero waste lifestyle is something to consider but in modern world achieving full zero waste is hard even for conscious people. The easiest thing we can do is to start with small things like bringing our own bags when we can, using less bottled drinks etc. But if we dont stop big companies that lead in terms of waste generation and oceans pollution our small acts of kindness wont change much, we need to unite against pollution and thats our only solution.
Zero-Waste lifestyle is a great idea. It is always good to spread awarness about problems that we as a people are causing to our planet. The major problem with this idea is that it is hard to adapt to it. Most things like plastic bag, 1 use cuttlery, 1 use cups are convinent way to do things. If we are oustide, maybe on our way to work/school and suddelny we are struck with need to step for coffee, mostly we order it to go and it comes with plastic/paper cup. We do not need to plan it ahead. We can simply walk into the store, order it and bring it with us. Zero-waste forces people to think about these kinds of things. I should consider bringing with me my own cup in case i want to drink coffee that day. It is not conivinient to do. And this is the biggest problem. We do not want to think about these kinds of problems. And we, as a community should change this. About the general plastic problem, i do not know if you are aware, but recently the scientists have discovered some kind of a mushroom that is able to process plastic. I think it is a step up in evolution, and a way our planet tries to fight with it. I am personally ashamed that i am using this amount of plasic but im trying every day to change it. My first to changing my way of life was to buy wooden mug that i can bring with me everywhere. I suggest start small and it will be easier with bigger problems.
I think that Zero-Waste lifestyle is generally a good idea because we should care about our planet. But to make an actual difference much more people should start living like that. But of course, I agree that we have to start with ourselves and then disseminate the word.

I know that world plastic problem is huge, but I don’t really know what can we do about plastic that already exists, I don’t know what are the best ways to recycle it. What I know is that we should as much as we can minimalize use of it. So, change our habits from using plastic items to (as You said) bamboo, paper or metal goods.

What will be my first step into conscious life? I think that I already made it, for example I recycle my garbage or use my own thermo cup for coffee. I’m not always ecological but I try to be as much as I can, because I think that taking care of our planet is or should be important for every one of us.
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
It’s sound nice but it’s almost impossible to do but if you try at last you will significantly reduce your waste
2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
In my opinion we can either develop something similarly durable and easy to use as plastic but with shorter decomposing time or find some enzyme that decompose plastic when needed otherwise, we will be reluctant to change.
3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
I will say that I don’t plan to step to deep into this conscious life almost everything that you buy Is in plastic and looking evetime for alternative is tiresome I will only do same small steps as always like segregating garbage and not to throwing trashes into bushes. Small steps.
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
I think that’s a great idea, but its easier said than done. Almost everything now is packed in tremendous amounts of plastic. Sometimes even vegetables are covered in some kind of plastic film on them.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?

I think that humanity must deal with it as fast as its possible. We have huge problem with it and must act quickly before its too late.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?

I have already made my first step and I try to buy products with the least amount of plastic used to package it.

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
Your suggestions are very positive. Indeed, the problem of society is to realize the consequences of this. It is necessary to introduce these rules to the masses. Maybe if this does not work, it will need to be solved at the state level.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
In general, if all people start paying attention to this, then problems can be avoided, even using plastic. Probably, you just need to learn how to sort it correctly, and then pay attention to its processing.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
Probably, I would note for myself the recommendation in your first paragraph. I use my own container for drinking liquids.
I think it is a very hard lifestyle, demanding a lot of rejection of easy solutions.
To be a zero-waster you need to be really beware of what you use and when to replace things, it is essential to buy only this food that you need and you will need.
I think plastic problem is a big matter, it is hard to change people habbits. Solution for this ? change packages for more eko like, ban straws from public places ( in Warsaw it is functioning very well ).
I think my first step would be to limit water waste and careful shopping to avoid waste.

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
I think that it is a great idea. But, for example, organic waste could be applied by farmers, as it is done in Sweden.
2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
In my opinion, it is the greatest problem in the world, as if we stop using plastic at all, anyway there are too much plastic waste, especially in the ocean. There already exist an organic equivalent of plastic which each farmer can produce without any special equipment. It is produced using some species of bacteria, Moreover, it decomposes in 2 weeks and is useful for the land.
3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
I am buying vegetables and fruits without any packaging, also using eco bags instead of plastic bags. If I have opportunity to buy something without plastic packaging, I do it

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?

I think its healty for our planet and better for our environment than being only comsumptionist. Less waste You produce less You pay, being Zero-waste brings light on our life and made us better humans.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?

I think that plastic is perfect material for everything but only in way of look only. This problem shall be on first place on "TO DO for our & our children future" list. Plastic is very durable material which cannot disolve faster than 200 years, it destroys natural bases of animals, adding CO2 effect.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?

My first step, will be that i will plant many diffrent plants on my Yard, and i ll use less plastic things.
I think that it’s fantastic idea. The plastic bags on streets and in the forest are really unpleasant view. Also, wasting food is unprofitable, we can do better than that. I support the zero waste, but unfortunately it is hard to remember about everything. However, in the store if I have to buy a one-time plastic bag, I always use it later for other purchases or as a garbage bag. I think that public awareness in that field tends to be higher. Many people segregate rubbish and throw biodegradable things into a compost. The most important step is to stop wasting food and buying them in biodegradable packings.
Few years ago I met a friend of mine who was a zero waste "freak". At the beginning I found this funny but as I was talking with her more and more argument strike me. Right now I'm well aware of the fact that we are draining our planet to the maximum. To be honest I still feel like I can do better job but at least I'm not using plastic bags and try to eat less meat. I'm also pay attention to habits that produce more trash like using cleaning cloth rather then paper towels. I'm not sure how we should go full out with this plastic problem but biodegradable polymer ring a bell but to truly answer your question I must read more, also I believe getting familiar with topic should be our first step in the process of changing.

I think that’s a very good idea. We should pay more attention to our environment. I don’t think people think that zero waste is not a good idea but rather they don’t care about the waste they generate.

There are the obvious individual contributions like: minimising plastic waste whenever you can and seek out brands which are really attempting to drive change. I think it would be a good idea to introduce reverse vending machines for plastic bottles in our country.

I usually buy water in reusable plastic and whenever I go shopping I always take my own bag, because plastic bags are one of the major sources of plastic pollution.

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
I think it's a revolutionary way of life and it should be the future. It's a chance to save our planet and reduce amount of trash people produce every day. My influence on the topic is for example that I always eat everything and don't waste food.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
I think it's a really big problem, people produce huge amount of plastic waste that we can't deal with.
Plastic packages should be replaced with recyclables so we stop produce so much plastic waste. We should also try to find a way to utilize those massive swimming trash from seas.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
It would be getting knowledge about what is harmful and what is beneficial for the environment and try to implement it in everyday habits. That could be a good start.
1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?
I think it's a brave decision to decide on the zero-waste lifestyle, because it's so difficult. People who do this also promote producing less waste, so they have positive impact on the people around there, not only on the environment.
2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?
Choosing brands which aren't using plastic package, using reusable containers, segregating waste, etc.
3. What will be your first step into conscious life?
I've made some steps so far - buying reusable things, not taking plastic bags for veggies and fruits, trying to not buy take-out food. I think that I have to be more careful about segregating waste, because sometimes I'm just lazy.

1. What do you think about a Zero-Waste lifestyle?

I think that people should use less one-time things, and stick to re-usable solutions, because average amount of garbage per person is tremendous. This starts with over packaging and ends with our laziness to spend a little more time on cleaning.

2. What do you think about the world’s plastic problem? How should humanity deal with it?

I think that's no the problem, it's catastrophic tragedy. I think that plastic is great material for enormous amount of cases, but the way we use it everyday is scary and stupid. Also dealing with recycling in the most of the countries is just absent as a thing, and the bigger is country are the bigger is problem. Because governments are thinking if we have such huge territory why do recycling instead of fields of garbage. For example Russia and Ukraine don't care about problem at all, because they have a huge space to create dumps. And this create problem for whole planet.

3. What will be your first step into conscious life?

I already made my plastic bag use as little as possible, and using cotton bags instead. Also I use filtered water instead of bottled one.
1. It seems hard to accomplish, I think it would require my entire day to go around figuring out ways to avoid creating any waste- it's everywhere around us. But maybe in the future where we will use a lot of bio-packaging it will be doable.
2. I think we should find a different way of packaging everything, we should recycle 100% of the plastic we throw away and also we should research bio-degradable replacement for the plastic we use in literally everything.
3. Recycling my own trash is a good first step and I think we all should try it.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
