Week 7 [6.05 – 12.05.2019] Beer revolution

Some people say that if you taste craft beer once, you won’t be able to go back to ordinary ones. A couple of years ago the beer industry took a step back and small independent breweries started to pop up like mushrooms in order to produce sophisticated, high quality beers that would be much better than those made in huge factories in every respect. Craft beer has become almost as respected alcohol as expensive whisky or wine and tasting it is an art as well. I encourage you to watch a short talk about craft beer and answer a few questions.

1.      If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?
2.      Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
3.      How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

Can you give some examples of your favourite
I'm not a beer drinker, and I don't drink. Tried crafting , thought it would be a little different aftertaste , but it was even worse. Tried in the pub Jabeerwocky smoked beer, the taste was like barbecue , sausage and cheese together. After that, I stopped trying craft beer. Sometimes I can afford a new Somersby mango&lime.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
Of course I'm willing to pay more for quality products. I don't eat much, so I can buy premium quality products. It immediately affects my well-being and skin quality.

3.How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
I don’t eat meat other than chicken and seafood, almost all fruits and most vegetables. By the smell I think almost everything would be called.

1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?
Unfortunately, I am not a big fan of beer. It makes me sick and choose not to drink it. I prefer pure whisky or vodka.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
Absolutely yes, I always read components and taking care of good quality everything I eat. I have to do this because after eating low-quality products and food I was getting sick.

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
I am not really good in recognizing ingredients and flavors, but I am still learning, experience new flavors and having a great fun with it. I would recognized garlic for sure, though.
I basically was drinking from a very young age, even earlier than puberty hit me. Something tells me that it was drinking that actually sped it up, but let's not get distracted. So, I can safely state that beer was part of my life for a very long time, in fact for more than a half of my life (I am definitley not proud of this), and yes, I can taste blindly different kinds of it, soft, strong, more solid, more watery, all of them. And, assuming you are a huge beer fan as well, lets be honest -- after a fourth pint you can't actually tell the difference, can you? Even those who claim that they can literally gallons of beer and still remain sober... Probably drinking budwiser or something. You just can't build up that level of tolerance.

In regards of craft beer, I definitley support any experiments and often try something new. If alcohol is not the way for you to get wasted, but rather spend time elegantly with good company, then sure, why not to go for some exotic tastes?
1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?

Unfortunately, I am not able to answer this question. I do not drink alcohol at all, and beer in particular because of its bitter taste, which I am very sensitive to.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?

Of course! However, provided that the quality of food will be better, not just "improved". Remember that what we eat affects our health and well-being, so it's probably worth investing in ourself?

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

I do not consider myself very good in the gustatory perception and recognizing products only on the basis of taste, however, most of the products and brands on the modern market I will rather be able to recognize with closed eyes because of the characteristic flavors.

I don't really like beer. I prefer drinks or vine.
2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?

When it comes to food I can spend a lot of money on it. Good chef's work costs but it's worth it.
3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

Well when I'm comparing my gustotary perception to other people I think I have it on really low level... I really can't recognize like 70% of some seasoning.
1. I have my favorite beer Opat from the Czech Republic and for me it will always be the best. :)
2. Yes, but not too much.
3. No, I do not need much. :)
Well, there are a lot of different types of beer, so maybe you just tried the wrong one, but after all if you like Somersby, then probably craft beer is indeed not for you :) It is good that there are people who care about the quality of the food even if it means that you have to pay more. The market is flooded with cheap, poor quality products because that's what most people want.
Hmm, that's interesting why beer makes you sick, but much stronger alcohols don't. Maybe something else than alcohol is the reason. Anyway there is a very wide choice of vodka and whisky as well. It is not very typical for a woman to like such flavours, isn't it? It is very positive that another person cares about the quality of the food even if it requires more expenses. That's one of the things that are worth spending money on.
Well, beer is wonderful, but yes - you can't tell the difference after fourth pint, so it's pointless to use beer to get drunk - there are better ways to do so. I became interested in craft beer just recently, so I don't know much of them, but I strongly recommend polish brewery "Pinta" and their "Atak chmielu" or "A ja palę ale". There is so much of this stuff on the market right now, that probably no one would ever try all of them, which is great - you can always discover something new and support the spirit of craft.
It's hard to disagree - food affects our life and it is important to take care of ourselves. Unfortunaltely poverty powers up itself and there is even more garbage available to buy in the groceries each year, because people try to save money on everything. I guess that the only way to fight with this trend is not to buy trash.
That's unfortunate. Maybe you should try a real one instead of products similar to beer such as Tyskie or Żywiec? I strongly encourage to give it a try :)

Definitely agree that good chef's work is worth spending more money on it, if only you can afford that of course.
Ok, so if you recommend Opat, I'll have to give it a try, thanks!

1. I like beer. Most often I choose popular brands such as Perła, Lech, Namysłów. I like beer in a green bottle.
Sometimes I also like to drink something sweeter like Desperados or Reds.
2. It depends on the food item, not everything has to cost more to have better quality. However, I happen to spend more money on higher quality of the food.
3. It seems to me that my taste perception is quite good. I like cooking, I can choose the flavors to make the dish tasty.
Although I have never tried to guess the ingredients blindly but maybe now I will try :)
1. I like to drink beer. On average I like to drink draft beer but sometimes an exception happened.
From popular brands I like "Desperados", "Warka" and of course my beer from the city "Łomża"
2.Who would not want better food? Surely, I'd rather spend more to get better quality.
Unfortunately, it's an obstacle, if I had to buy it
3. I think I am able to recognize more than a dozen flavors, beverages. The taste of licorice is so unique and unprofitable. Basic dishes such as "Bigos", popular soups
i easily recognizes. But rather, I will not be able to say, for example, what spices and what meat someone has prepared the dish for
Hi there

I like to drink beer with friends. Sometimes we reach for popular brands such as Carlsberg, and sometimes we go for craft beer. I can recommend "Biernhale" near Arkadia.

As much as I am able to spend more money to get better quality products. I am from people who value quality over quantity. Our orgazni thank you yet!

My taste perception is on the middle level. I am often able to recognize a dish or ingredients. But a lot of flavors overlap and I can not recognize.
I love crat beer, and i completely agree on thesis that you simply cannot drink an industrial-made beer after you taste a craft. Some brands are so ridiculously bad that it is just funny, a 0,5 bottle of Ukrainian "Obolon'" beer cost less than same bottle o water, and the quality is adequeate to price, but at least theyre honest about quality with price, while more popular brand have incredible cost for the same horrible brew they call a beer.
I want and i do spend more money on quality food, once you start lacking a nutrients and vitamins everything starts going wrong way. I have never used my gustatory skills proffesionally but i am able to recognize ingredients and types of food.
I like craft beer, whenever I am in the store I try to buy some beer that I have not previously drunk, but sometimes I just like to drink a regular lager because I like this taste. Of course, I am because I love cooking that is why I like to try new things and pay more for some luxury products. I think I am able to distinguish ingredients from a dish because as I mentioned before cooking is my hobby so I know a lot of ingredients and seasonings.
I am more into popular ones, I do not like craft beers as they are expensive in relation to taste in my opinion. I do like wheat beers like Książece złote pszeniczne.
Of course I would and I am doing it, but for food not beer.
Definatelly no, I am not gourmet at any point but I do like tasty and high quality food, of course I can recognise some basic ingredients but no sophisticated ones.
Answering your questions:

1. I prefer only popular beers, popular brands, because it tastes the most to me. I do not like taste of crafted beer, not for me. My favourite beer? Heineken - that's it!

2. In my opinion, the food we currently have in stores is okay and very good quality for me. I do not think that food need change and no need to invest money to improve food taste and production quality.

3. I do not think that my gustatory perception is good. For me, food is food. Of course, I can recognize some ingredients, drinks, etc. but not too much. 60-70% I'd say. I'm not a taster. I eat to live and I do not live to taste ;) Life is too short to taste ;)
1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?

I prefer popular brands, but I also like trying something new, so I am trying to discover some new craft beer. Unfortunately, most of the craft beers, which I tried didn't taste very good.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get a higher quality of the food?

Of course, I think we shouldn't economize on food or drinks. Because, when we try some new food and it tastes great it gives us joy and happiness. There is no problem paying more for more quality product at all, I like to drink beer with friends and I think the quality of beer influence the quality of communication.

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

I think my taste perception is at the middle level. I can easily recognize a dish or some ingredients, but when there is a lot of flavours or they overlap I can get confused.
Well, i'm not beer guy at all. I found only couple that makes me think 'hmmm thats great' and most of them were sours. But there was one 1st tier craft beer called chateau. Its seasoned beer with sweet aromas in barrels after red wine. It was delicious but also very expencive. Yet i'm always interested in more expencive food as it mostly has more flavours to discover.
1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?
I am totally indifferent about it. I am not a frequent alcohol consumer, and even if I drink it is usually some quality wine or bourbon.
2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
As the matter of fact I am doing exactly that for the past 2 years. (I guess visiting market and two different stores for food each Saturday is exactly what you meant.
3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
Unfortunately I am not good at it at all. But I can cook without a recipe and it will still taste good.
1. This is weird, but I tent to enjoy cheap beer more than craft beer. I sometimes feel like hobo bringing beers like "Tatra" but they are fine for me. Cheap and taste good for me.

2. Of course. But I don't want to spend more money on something I wouldn't enjoy.

3. It's just terrible. I can distinguish only two flavours - good and bad. But, I'm not very interested in food so I don't put a lot of thought in this.

I like craft beer, if i saw some honey beer i buy it, if some pub have not it i bought some dark one
2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
Yes, it’s not about taste but about health
3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
I can recognize different wine, maybe dark from light beer, maybe some vegetables or fruits from different one. i dont know nothing about spice’s :)

1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?
I do not like beer. For me, it is very unpleasant to the taste. The only option for me is to add fruit syrups. But even then I don’t have much joy in drinking this drink.
2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
Definitely. The best preparation and quality of products, in any case, means that the dish costs more. Cheap ingredients are a good substitute but often backfire. Like for example palm oil.
3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
I think that I have an average level of these abilities. I definitely will not name the brand of the drink or what it consists of and how it was prepared. But if we talk about food, I can recognize the ingredients.
I will be honest and frank. The thing is, I know how alcohol works. Alcohol first thins the blood, we feel a little better, but after that, our red blood cells stick together. Our brain is very complex. And to deliver the nutrients, only one unit passes through the capillary. Now imagine what happened to you when you drank what was happening to your brain. That's why we get drunk. And in the morning, the head hurts, just because our head is filled with fluid to get rid of dead brain cells. I do not say that you cannot drink alcohol, but it is better to avoid alcohol. My grandfather loved to drink alcohol, grandfather was completely healthy, but his brain died, only his brain. This is creepy. Therefore, I refuse to discuss alcohol as something good. But beer is one of the best drinks. If it is only non-alcoholic beer. I like the taste of beer. I think it is worth paying more to get quality food. Not just an inscription, but that it was really high quality. Because we are what we eat.
I like to drink beer, especially a craft one. My favourite kind of beer are the stouts, dark, heavy ones like e.g "Czarny Roman". When im going out, i often order a craft beer insted of a concern, popular one. But it was not always the case. I used to drink a lot of low quality beer but then, i think my taste have grown. I like the idea of drinking beer that have a certain "depth" to its taste and as you have said: there are plenty of breweries that offer great quality beer. I generally speand a little bit more money to get better quality products than the cheaper ones. I think there is no reason to risk getting sick of bad food and there is falvour diffrence in most cases. I think i have some kind of good gustatory preception. When i was a little, my parents decided to grow some vegetables themselves in our little garden. When we have harvested e.g. some tomatoes i have always compared them to tomatoes we bought at the local store. The diffrence was huge and that was a moment that i knew, quality has serious impact on your food.
1. Most of the time I drink popular brands like “Desperado” or “Książęce” but from time to time I also like to try some craft beer for a change.
2. It’s all depend how much money I have and if this higher quality food is worth the price.
3. I must say that it’s not so good. Blindly I can recognize that I like or dislike something. Well if the ingredients have a very characteristic flavour or I really don’t like it then maybe I can recognize some of them.
I enjoy drinking beer in general. I definitely prefer to drink craft beer then popular brands but as we all know craft beer is much more expensive then regular one so not always,I can afford it. Few years ago I was in a bar named Antykwariat which unfortunately does not exist anymore, and I tried there dark beer named Sowite Ciemne and I loved it. I visited this bar few more times just for this beer but after it was closed, I couldn’t find it anywhere anymore. Until one time I saw it in Alma supermarket, and I bought like 10 bottles of it, but it was the last time I ever saw it. I hope I will be able to find it somewhere else because I really would like to try it again.

About Your second question, it all depends on a taste of food or drink. I won’t eat anything that looks or tastes weird and I’m really strict about it. There is no problem for me to spend more money on something I really like to eat just because if I don’t like it then I won’t eat it.

I honestly don’t know how good my gustatory perception is. I think it’s pretty well and I can sometimes guess the ingredients of something but not always and I also don’t always check it :P
1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?
I do like beer, i'm a fan of heineken and budweiser. Also i like craft beer more than non-craft beer. My best experience was in Prague, i tried really delicious meal and beer.
2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
Sure, i don't understand when people eat sh*t and don't want to pay money for normal food. The result is they are looking like sh*t.
3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
Unfortunately not, i'm not good at degustation because some of my tongue receptors are not feeling some spicy food or other normal tastes. I don't know how it happened, but when i was a child, i ate too much spicy food and maybe, because of that, i don't feel tastes fully.

"If you drink beer..." i dont really so lets knock that question out.
When it comes to food i do sometimes pay premium to get some high quality food at my table, i believe that whatever suits us at given time should be our choice, one day i will eat low quality bland hotdogs from "biedronka" the other day ill have high quality Parma ham with cranberry on the side, but both choices should be made b me alone.
There are couple things i can recognize taste of, that would be tea, some coffee and ice creams :)
I saw wine testers take on blind test once and i could not believe how much they knew about wines alone it was crazy showcase of knowledge and thats what started me on my tea addiction.
1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?

I do drink beer and quite like craft beer. I can’t say that I have favourite ones but I really enjoy all kinds of IPA’a and APA’s.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?

Yes, I’m willing to pay more for food of the higher quality, I think that if you don’t must you shouldn’t save money on food.

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

I think that my gustatory perception is quite good, I can easily recognize ingredients and spices used to make some kind of food that I’m eating, its slightly more difficult with drinks but still I think that I’m pretty good.
My first encounter with craft beer happened when I started my job in bar few years ago. Before I always drank popular product available on the marketplace but once I got my hands on crafted beer my view point change. Nowadays I prefer to buy expensive product that has richer flavor that I more enjoy. Generally I prefer to buy sour beer but I tend to drink ale's as well as lager's. I really like Faro or products for Klichoman Pale. To be honest I'm not sure how good is my gustatory perception, propably not very if I don't have opinion. Never actually try to analyze the tast to their fullest but definitely I'm aware what I prefer to drink :p

Unfortunately, I am not good at beer. It is not literate in this matter. And do not have any preferences. Experts say it comes with experience. I don't know yet ...

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
In general, yes, ready. But it seems to me that if there is a bona fide manufacturer on the market, he will be able to find a balance between quality and price. Buyers tend to this, but unfortunately, few manufacturers are ready to go for it. This is a business. I wish there was a balance.

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
Oh,yeah. I can recognize the ingredients if I tried them of course before. I can say my taste memory is not bad.
Man, I'm student, craft beers? What an unnecessary extravagance, my knowledge about beer brands consist a few ones: Harnaś, Tatra and Kuflowe Mocne . Okay, now for serious, my favourite brewery is Grodzisk, they have many fruit flavours.

Yes, currently I'm spending a lot on food. I have full diet from box-catering company. I really enjoy live more by eating well prepared, high quality, fresh food.

I'm rather blind in recognizing flavours in alcohol drinks, I'm astonished, when famous beer geek Tomasz Kopyra feels wet cardboard or other abstract things in his drinks.

From time to time I like to drink a craft beer, I like that each of them have a unique flavour, but when I meet up with my friends I prefer to drink popular brands of beers. There are so many craft beers, so every time I usually drink different ones and I don’t have a favourite brand.

Yes, I sometimes I go out with my friends to try some higher quality oriental food. There is a quote “you are what you eat”, so I don’t think it is a good idea to a lot of money on food.

I think it depends on the type of food or drink. I like cooking so I think I would be able to recognise some basic ingredients, but when it comes to alcohol I wouldn’t be able to recognise any beer.

My favourite is Somersby Forestfruits, i don't like other stronger beers becouse of their hard smack.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?

Of course i am doing this, i think that higher quality of food makes me life longer and helthier.

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

I think i wasn't able to do it becouse i cannot focus while i have closed eyes, maybe i could recognize only my favourite by nose.
1. If you drink beer, do you like craft beer, or you prefer popular brands? Can you give some examples of your favourite ones?
I don't like drinking beer, but in several occasions I tasted a lot of craft beer. A lot of my friends are intrested in the craft beers, even professionaly.
2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?
I love eating good food, but it can be really expensive. Since I started working part-time job most of my money was spent on the food! I like buying it, but I know I have to restrain.
3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognize different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?
I once had been on the blind gustatory event and the chef told me I was the best! I guessed most of the ingredients and they weren't so simple.

Sorry, but I don't drink beer.

2. Are you willing to spend more money to get higher quality of the food?

I will and I do spend more money on more delicious food. Because what the sense of buying a tomato that tastes like plastic one?

3. How good is your gustatory perception? Are you able to blindly recognise different types of particular food or drink and perhaps to guess the ingredients?

I can differentiate different ingredients in complex meals. But I don't have special profile of food in which I specialise. Also I have a friend that can differentiate 0.5l, 1l, and 2l Coca-Cola by taste. If you are curious, he says that 1l one is the best.
1. It's hard not to like craft beers- there are so many different flavours! However I'm not going to lie I usually go with the more popular brands like Warka or Książęce.
2. Yes I am, but it doesn't matter because as a college student I can't afford better quality either way:P
3. I guess it depends on the type of food or drink we're talking about. With beers I would probably have a hard time telling the difference between some.
