Week 4 [05-11.11.18] Seek discomfort with "Yes Theory"

From early stages of our lives we plunge into a routine which makes our lives stale, uninteresting and sometimes it can even seem unworthy of living. Coming out of a routine as we all know is really hard because we start to fear everything that is not a part of our everyday life. I want to tell you a story of a group of friends who wanted to change something in their lives and they started a movement called “Yes Theory”.

In the summer of 2015 a group of friends from different countries bonded over the idea that life is best lived outside of your comfort zone. With no money and just an idea in their heads, they risked everything and moved into their friend’s apartment and started making videos on YouTube which helped them overcome their biggest fears and seeking discomfort.

They try are trying to make people leave their comfort zone and spread happiness. In their eyes it’s the best way to live your life to the fullest. Because of that,  they helped many people to fulfill their dreams and overcome fears and all it took was one word, “YES”. The fact that they try to connect to their community in many ways makes them unique. In many of their videos we can see them interacting with their fans. For instance, they have a series where fans decide about the course of their day, making them do spontaneous things.  Also, they created a group on Facebook where likeminded individuals meet.

It’s interesting where friendship and an idea can lead you and how your life can change in one day. I’m not saying that everyone should live like them and neither do they say so, but it’s important to change your routine into some sort of challenge and finally overcome your fears or do something that you have never thought you could do.

Question:
  1. Do you think that what “Yes theory” project does  is important in people’s lives?
  2. What do you think about their movement? Would you like to take part in it?
  3. Have you ever challenged  your life routine?

I guess, I haven't put much of a thought into that, but my life was never a routine. I have genuenley never lost a will to live and what s more -- always found everything suicide related ridiculous. When I read all those stories around the web, about people that are "Lost", "Can't take any more of this", "Don't see any sense in life", I feel so confused. Like seriously, have no Idea what could even cause this. Nobody can say that I am a positive person and optimist at all, I almost never even smile. And the term "Depression" is absolutely clear for me. But all those suicidal routine meaningless life people... Cannot understand them. Maybe, because I have never experienced a true depression myself, therefore, never required such things as Yes movement. My comfort zone is just simply too big, the only activities that lie outside of it are those that are either extremely dangerous or extremely pointless. In both cases I am not going to engage in them whatsoever. But about people that really need help... Well, it is indeed good that those guys found their purpose and are saving other from the cold claws of crippling depression.

I don’t think that this project is important in peoples life because to honest, I’ve never heard about them ago but their ideology is very important for people. I’d like to take part in their movement but only for some time because I’m a little different type of person. Of course I often try to escape my comfort zone and do crazy shit and also in many cases it’s profitable and worth doing but… In back of my head I’m thinking about building family and I’d like to ensure full stability for it. To sum up, I’ve challenged my life routine few times and I believe that I’ll do it again but I’d like to achieve stability first and then do crazy things, travels etc.

I like their motto because it tells truth about something that we all afraid to face and recognize in our lives. I don't know much about their movement but if they spread the idea of self-confidence, bravery and motivate people all around the Internet to make big steps forward to living the lives they always wanted then I think these guys deserve to be recognized. I personally have never been a fan of some movements but I do not mind other people taking part in them. It's funny that today we live in times when almost everything is possible but our mind still find ways to discourage ourselves. I've personally don't think that we need to be part of something to start reaching our goals. All we really need is mind-shift, change of perception and attitude.
Yes, I did actually challenge my life routine and I think I should do it more often.
I really enjoyed reading this article, thank you! "Yes Theory" project changed a lot of lives, it is a fact, for sure. A lot of people don't even understand that all fears are in our mind, but definitely that theory helped us to take them away from our head. I'm not a fan of video blogging, i prefer to stay in a shadow. What's about their move, undoubtedly it is a good idea. They help people with their fears and earn money from youtube, what can be better? I challenge everyday, i try to improve myself and my skills almost everyday, so it is not a new thing for me.

The "Yes, theory" project is very useful, some people to change yourself or your life is not enough "magic kick" =) I always liked bloggers, you look at them and understand that life is different you are inspired and want to change something too. Since I am a creative person and I tend to spontaneous ideas, decisions, travel at 3 am in another city or country or Wake up and go for a walk in a Bathrobe ))

Their target is to spread happiness, so, even if sometimes they fail, they still do something important for people. I like the whole idea. I know, how hard it is to leave your comfort zone, but the approach chosen by these guys is not the one I'd used. For me the goal is not to leave your comfort zone, but expand it. The best way to do so, in my opinion is to adapt to situations, people, surrounding. It takes a lot of courage and efforts, of course, but it is better to fail than regret about losing the opportunity because of inaction.

I moved to foreign country to study, I have plans to move further from my home to continue my studies and to work. There are a tone of challenges on the horizon. My life has just started.

Recently, I came across their youtube channel, these guys are great. This idea with Will Smith's commitment to doing something crazy, such as a bungee jump from a helicopter on his birthday shows that nothing is impossible in the world. These boys are very positive about life and you can see how energy gushes out of them.
I think that each of us in our lives should pass such a theory a few times. We need to get to know our limits and it is also possible that we have become new people.
I would like to take part in their event one day, it seems to me that it would be an unforgettable party and with such awesome people!
I have many challenges in my life, some victories and some problems. You can’t break down after failures but invent new challenges and constantly strive for a goal.

I guess that they are doing a great job and they should keep doing. For me leaving my comfort zone is the best way to evolve and improve, but every time I am trying to change something in my daily routine only bad feelings and ideas are coming to my mind, but all changes in my life only made me feel better, there were absolutely no painful fails or disappointments after changing my daily routine. To my mind the biggest problem is that when a person feels comfortable and gets used to it, our instinct tells us that basically there is no need to change anything. I have to tell that you should not always change your routine, I think that doing some small changes once per year and some massive changes, like moving to another city or country, changing job, about one time per 5-6 years. Their movement is amazing and I would like to join it if I will have an opportunity.

Thank you for your comment. Good to hear that you never had this type of problems in your life. Some people just don't know how to manage with their life problems and that yes movement is for them. I agree that they won't try this themselfes and because of that they need some type of incentive to try something new and I'm not saying that they should try jumping out of an airplane but even talking to other person is really scary for them.
Bartosz Barnat said…
I see we have similar thinking about that topic. I would like to take part in some of their adventures but I want different type of life, stable with family and home to come back to.

I changed my life completely few years ago, I didn't know about yes theory but my mindset was similar to theirs. I flipped my life upside down and it really did me the person that im today. I think that some people need this type of encourage to change something for good, others dont but everyone need some sort of positive energy in their life.

Good to hear that. Thank you for your comment. Keep up the good work Andrii and I hope that you will make yourself great challenges in your life.

I think it's a very interesting idea to overcome fears and courage in expressing decisions that always make us think again about this subject.
Their moves are interesting, but I do not think that i would be a part of it, because I am a human who always analyzes the issues of proper analysis. If the risk is greater than doing it, I wont do it.
We are always challenged in our personal lives, jumping on a cliff in the lake until a decision to help a blind person cross the street.
We are always challenged in our personal lives, jumping on a cliff in the lake until a decision to help a blind person cross the street. I always liked the challenge, the change in daily life required to improve individual performance.

Thank you for your comment. It's good to hear that you like them and this what they are doing. Im surprised where this one idea in their head took them that they even filmed their adventure with someone that famous like Will Smith. I agree with you and I'm glad that you know what is the purpouse of life and that you shouldnt break down after a small failures.

Thank you for your comment. I think that changes are inevitable and we just need to know what to do with them. How to make them positive in our life and make something of it.

I think this a great project. Life gives us a lot opportunities and sometimes we need to say "yes" to them. It could push out of comfort zone, or make regret about doing it. But at least it's experience good or bad it's changing us. I feel like I already took part in it. It's maybe not a big deal for the wold but I need to make changes in my life. Just to do what I should do. But I need more courage for it.

I have very ambivalent feelings about this project. On one hand, I can understand why people want to fight against routine, especially if your routine isn't really that great. I've personally taken quite a few "out of comfort zone" decisions recently and I'm happy I did - they were really worth it. So yes, we could use this kind of "yes" attitude in our lives and it keeps it fresh and interesting.
On the other hand, I know many people are doing great thanks to having a daily routine that allows them to save their energy for things which are important. If you have a job which is satisfying and/or family which you care about, a routine is really nice to have. Your life doesn't have to be full of adventures to be satisfying and happy.
I think that for some people “Yes theory” is very important project. It helps them to break up their routine by providing support from other people. When someone has support from the group of similar thinking individuals it is easier for him to handle the routine breaking “discomfort”. Although not all people have need for such experience, sometimes humans are seeking for routine and peaceful life.
In my opinion, their idea was good, and it is good that the project exists. Although I wouldn’t like to participate, mostly because I don’t like socializing very much and I don’t feel unhappy because of my daily routine.
I sometimes break my daily routine, however my it is currently more intense then I would like it to be. I recently stated working, I will finish my studies soon and I have to write my engineering thesis, all these activities are somehow “routine breaking” for me.
Do you think that what “Yes theory” project does is important in people’s lives?
I think so, it is great to experience new things and fulfill your dreams.
What do you think about their movement? Would you like to take part in it?
I think it is wonderful initiative and as long as they have fun doing it and make other people happy, they should receive more publicity.
Have you ever challenged your life routine?
I try to do it, but it is hard for me because I have to work, study and find time for my fiancée.

I do think that „Yes theory” is important in people’s lives, as it encourages us to get out of the comfort zone, which by the way a tremendously hard thing to do. I struggle with it every day and each step I take to be more productive yields surprising benefits. I have watched their videos on tider trip throughout Europe, it was pretty fun. However I think that they focus a bit too much on partying.
It is increadibly good to see people come out of their comfort zone and reaching new heights and successes, i think that this motto is what should drive all people. I would like to join such movement and in a way i do, every now and then i adopt new hobbies complete new milestones and think of new ones. I have challenged my life routine in a more extreme ways than just trying some new activity, i live and learn in a foreign country for example and even now i add more to my daily activities.

I believe that some people need a "shake-up", because most often people do not want to leave their comfort zone, and for further personal development you should always be able to do it.

I watched some of their videos, and I want to say that I like what they do. Guys do things that others wouldn’t dare, but sometimes there are strange actions for me. I understand that the point is to overcome my fear, but why are they bare, perhaps some actions are not clear to me. I would take part in some actions, as in life I lack new sensations, but I could not do it all my life, like these guys.

Yes, it happened a couple of times;) For me, to challenge means to do something that I have never done, because of fear. I believe that it is important to experience new emotions and go out of the comfort zone more often.
I think it is important in people’s lives to seek new and challenging situations. “Yes Theory” project does something very necessary to inspire the society to get out of their comfort zone and push boundaries to lead more accomplished life free of “What if”. I would join that without hesitation.
I can’t remember last time I’ve challenged my life routine so I feel like I should do it when I get a chance to.

I think that „Yes theory” project is a very good idea. Many people are afraid to get out of their comfort zone. They like their routine, working 9 to 5. What they don’t like is doing risky things and I don’t mean skydiving here. I don’t think it’s good. And I don’t know whether it comes from laziness or more from fear.

Hmm, that would be a nice experiment I think. I really like the idea of this project.

I had a few situations in my life that have really changed it and my point of view. I like to take new challenges, but only the ones that make sense because what I really don’t like is wasting time.
Form my point of view it is quite important. Especially for closed people who are looking for some adventure but it is a bit challenging for them to find new connections.

I would definitely participate in this movement. I guess it would make my life brighter.

It is known fact that if you want develop yourself your need to go out of comfort zone, so yes systematically Im trying something new. It can be some activity of food. And I must say it does help me to feel better.
Hard to say if "Yes Theory" do something important in people's lives because I've never heard about them. It's a good idea but is this really helps people?

I would like to try it because it's an interesting idea.

A few time per year I'm challenging my life routine. Sometimes it's end with great success and sometimes with waisted time. But I'm always happy that I tried something new.

I’ve seen a few videos on their channel. I remember them challenging Will Smith to do a heli-bungee, and that he accepted the challenge, but I’m not sure how far it went, probably I’ll go google it after finishing writing this comment :) I think this project is good and inspiring, it shows that sometimes it is good to do crazy things and risky decisions.
I think I would try to take part in their movement just because why not?
I challenged my life routine quite a few times, I love changes and I’m the type of person that is not afraid of changes and challenges.

Considering the fact that Yes Theory is very popular (their youtube videos have, on average, a few millions of views), I think it's pretty safe to say that they are quite important for quite a number of people, even if you ignore the people who watch the channel just for entertainment.

The Yes Theory movement isn't exactly my kind of thing - I don't particularly care about intentionally trying to step out of my comfort zone, as it's something that usually ends up happening naturally. Living a life without ever having to deal with something you're not familiar with is rather difficult unless you live a very closeted life.

As for challenging my life routine, I've never really challenged it in a major way, but it has certainly undergone changes over the years. While the individual changes are rather small, over time they end up making quite significant differences.

Do you think that what “Yes theory” project does is important in people’s lives?
It seems to me that these people just didn't liked their life. For me its ok, to be mr nobody. Nowadays you have to spend hours to do fancy things, but does anyone really cares?

What do you think about their movement? Would you like to take part in it?
No. I just dont have an urge to change my attitude. I wonder what else they did to test their yes-theory. Sleeping with each other?

Have you ever challenged your life routine?
I'm pretty happy with my daily routine of drinking and visiting night clubs.
1. I think it it might be important for a lot of people - personally I always try to challenge myself and "force" somehow to do/learn something new, but I also know a lot of people to like their lives and situation, and don't want to change anything.

2. I think it a good idea, and it requires a little of courage to admit that something is "out of Your comfort zone", and even more courage to actually do it !

3. Hard to say - I try to learn new things every day, or try to do the task I'm not really familiar with in job, but is it challenging my daily routine? I don't think so

I do think that this project is important for people's lives. It's good to overcome fears and try something what you've dreamt of. But we need to remember, 90% of us are/will working/work for 5 days a week. In a meantime we care about home, families etc. That consumes a lot of time and we rather care about small hobbies instead of "big adventures". It is really hard to live everyday crazy, overcoming our fears, making adventures, we have responsibilities.
Speaking about me... I was arachnophobic for entire life. This year I decided to fight with it and after few months (from May -> now) I have 8 spiders, some of them are big and I found it as a hobby. But I cannot find time to make big adventures. Working 3 days, 2 days attending studies, making home responsibilities at the weekend and here comes question: when? Maybe there will be a time in my life when I will afford such a crazy life, but now it's no time for that.
I think that this project is interesting and all people must come out of their comfort zone sometimes because this is one of our human needs. People don't like when they have routine life and all actions the same day by day.

I don't want to take part in this movement because I'm interested in different things.

Yes, sometimes I challenge my life routine but not too often because sometimes I have no time for this.

I have seen their movement. It is great what they do for people and themselves. While working on this movement, they gain the most help from it. Because it has aim and moves them from their comfort zone.
1. Do you think that what “Yes theory” project does is important in people’s lives?
Being given possibilities is always dependent on the approach. Some people might miss them out. This project is a great way to open up for more possibilities and so allows to find happiness.

2. What do you think about their movement? Would you like to take part in it?
Everything that can both, positively affect people’s life and is not too invading should be perceived as a good thing. This project, despite the possibility of being taken as an invasive way of changing life approach – due to somehow pushing people out of their comfort zones, seems to be one of those things, therefore, I would surely participate in that.

3. Have you ever challenged your life routine?
Bit by bit. Sometimes just so I don’t get bored, sometimes because I’d simply like to see how would things turned out if I tried something else. Being open minded allows us to both, grow and experience more happiness. Flipping our life upside down on a day to day basis can, however, be shocking and have a negative impact on us.

Some of the people who live between us need a kick to start doing something new, to overcome the fears and leave the comfort zone. For those people "yes theory" might be important.

I don't think this movement fits me. Every day I have to move outside the comfort zone by doing tasks that are not necessary but are good for my self-development.

I am pretty happy about how my life looks like. I don't want to challenge my daily routine and change anything.

I haven’t heard about this project, but it seems very interesting. I have once read about a reporter that was asking people at the end of their lives, what do they regret most and the most common answer was that they regret the things that they did not do. That had a big impact on me. It is never easy to get out of your comfort zone, but if you practice it a lot, it eventually becomes a habit and a way of living.

1. Do you think that what “Yes theory” project does is important in people’s lives?
- To be honest I have no clue. It gives them money so probably the answer is yes. I believe that without money they would just drop this idea after one year.
2. What do you think about their movement? Would you like to take part in it?
- I think it is a great idea for talkative people who like challenges in their lives.
I would not take a part in this movement, because I like to be locked in my basement so I do not have to interact with other people.
3. Have you ever challenged your life routine?
- No, I like my life how it is. It is simple but enjoyable, I do not like any surprises or leaving my comfort zone.
Yes, because it helps people break their barriers with which they would not be able to make out without the support of this group.

I think that this is a very interesting initiative but I would not like to take part in it.

Yes, I think that everybody falls in routine. Some work for many years in one job and can't imagine a change of profession. Often people also can't imagine moving to another country in the world because they are afraid that they can't able to do it.

While ideas and attitude the are trying to express in their movement (encourage people to get out of their comfort zones, live the life to the fullest) are in general valuable and are important for many people, their videos are similar to those we can find on many entertainment YouTube channels which makes them not very unique.
I agree on that it is a good thing to get out of your comfort zone and do things which we don’t like or afraid to do. It could be valuable experience to take part in such experiment for a short time.

"Yes theory" channel has nearly 3 million subscribers so it is rather certain that it have some importance in people's lives and might encourage them to change their lifestyles. I think their movement is quite interesting and I would like to escape my comfort zone every now and then. I challenged my life routine but definitely not as much as they probably do.
For some people "Yes theory" migh be important and actually make their life beter. Not everyone is openminded or outgoing and a lot of people are stuck in their routine so this movement is usefull for many of them. Personally I'm not interested in projects like that. I don't have problems with everyday life even though work and education make our life repeateable. Everyday I try to do something different or same things in a different way to do not become defeated by boredom. To conclude movements like that are good because they help people.
Yes it could change people lives for 360 degrees ( jk, I know its 180 ). Anyway I don't think I'll join to such movement.
I think its an interesting initiative but definatelly not for me. We live in Poland so people might abuse this.
What do you mean by challenge? For me its a challange to get up earlier to be the first in the office :D yes I tried manytimes to change something but it 's not that easy as it sounds. I think the best way to avoid daily routine is to find person who will always suprise you (with something nice of course).

Yes, because it could help people to break their barriers, get rid of insecurities and get out of their comfort zone. There are plenty of movements and possibilities to to that and i think everybody can find their way, the best approach to deal with it. A lot of people don't even realize that all fears are only in our mind and only we can change it by taking actions. For past 4 years I challenged my life routine repeatedly - I love changes and finding a new approach to every task that I do. I’m the type of person that isn't afraid of challenges. I encourage my friend to participate in it with me ;)
I strongly recomend watching "yes man" with Jim Carrey - good comedy with fun plot - I have so much fun while watching it

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...
