Week 11 [05.06-11.06.2017] Online Doctors

Virtual doctor visits are rapidly gaining popularity these days as more health insurers offer telemedicine services to help cut costs. Studies have shown that virtual care may effectively used to treat common problems such as flu, acne or urinary tract infections. Video doctor consultations can save patients a lot in time and convenience.  At $40-50 they typically cost approximately the same as a traditional doctor consultation co-pay so it’s quite affordable

It’s really simple, all you need to do is just sign up and you’re ready to go.
Then you have to select a doctor, and he or she can answer questions, assess your condition and even provide a prescription (which you can pick up at the nearest pharmacy store) After log in you’ll see a list of doctors, mostly they are available 24/7.

As we can see on TrustPilot – link below, there is over 6k positive feedback in UK.  https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/onlinedoctor.superdrug.com?page=2

Below you can find short advertisement of online consultation:

I previously experienced similar consultation and I was very happy with the quality of the service I received. When I was travelling to the United Kingdom couple of years ago I got a very bad eye infection. I picked up a phone called my insurance company and after short waiting time I was transferred to the relevant practitioner. The person on the phone was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I explained over a phone what was wrong with my eye, then doctor made some conclusions and advised I should go to the hospital as the matter was very serious. My insurance company helped me to organise a taxi which took me straight to the relevant person. I was treated very quickly and with a good effect.
From my own experience I can easily say this kind of service is really good and might help to save a lot of time. Unfortunately my issue was too serious but practitioner was very helpful. Coupled with the quick response from the insurance company my treatment was quick and easy.

Questions:
1. What do you think about such way of treatment/diagnosis?
2. Would you try if it will be available in Poland?
3. Do you find any other disadvantages?

I believe it's great way of minimizing queues to doctors. Instead of going to the doctor, asking "what's wrong with me" and getting the answer "nothing, just buy some pills" you could do it online. I would definitely try it if it was available in Poland.
In my opinion the problem is it wouldn't be possible to touch a patient so if the doctor is not sure what may be wrong you will have to go and see him anyway. So it's a waste of time then, because you could have just gone to the doctor.
This is great idea - a time saver for both you and your doctor. Taking into account the queues for doctors, this solution can bring only the pros in our country. I will try it for sure if it will be available in Poland. I hate wasting my time in queue in doctor's surgery, especially when I really don't fell very well.
Of course, when someone's sickness is serious, doctor still needs to see you, but when you've got flu or cold, it is very good solution.

I am traditionalist in this matter and I believe that some questionnaire won't replace a real contact.
On the other hand, real consultation may be worse than such visit - sometimes doctors don't ask additional questions to check what's wrong: once, when I was at doctors I said, that I've got sore throat and no high fever. Doctor just looked at it and recommended tea with raspberry juice. Week later, I went with same problem but to another doctor - bronchitis.
In most cases interview with patient is the most important. But still - I believe that doctor should see and hear what's wrong. Maybe questionnaire before visit? To make visit quicker?

I won't give agree to it, because... The main thing in diagnosis is differential diagnosis and the whole treatment depend on it. Two different diseases can almost show the same feature with just one change which of course not possible for the patient to even think about. Its not always verbal complain that is to considered, indeed clinical examination is very vital.
I think online doctor maybe usefull only in situations like where access to doctor directly is quite impossible at the moment and online doctors can be a source of a great relief.
It would be a great way to limit ques to the first contact doctor when people have flu or just need prescription for the pills that they used or lost. I think many of the online visits would still end with a need to prepare a better real diagnosis - but if ques can be limited even by 25 % it is worth to try.

It's up to type of sick. I think not all diseases are possible to diagnosis online, some of them requires additional researches. Some common and simple disease like flue could be diagnosis online, it would definitely save our time and money.

Hi Magdalena, thanks for your comment.
I agree with most of what you've said, however in my opinion patients waste way more time queuing up to see a doctor with a simple symptoms such as sore throat, cough or headache.
While the phone call consultation takes about 15 minutes.

Thank you for your comment. I totally agree with you.

Thank you for your comment. I believe we've all been in the similar situation. A lot of people claim that there's as many diagnosis as doctors.
Coming back to the general thesis, that's what it basically is, a questionnaire. After this a consultant decides if you need to see a relevant doctor in person.
Unknown said…
That's a valid point and I fully agree that this not a solution to all of the diseases out there. However as you said, no all the people have quick and easy access to hospital or general practice. Also you have to agree that there's plenty of people who very unnecessary make their way to the hospital with the symptoms that can be easily treated at home. Even more, doing this they put others at risk, spreading potential virus.

Exactly my point of view. Thank you for your comment.

Thanks for the comment, couldn't agree more.

The ad is hilarious, had a good laugh ;)
On a serious note, I think it is a great way of dealing with "nothing serious" casuses. Saves time and money, very efficent if you are having just a simple case of flu which is easy to conclude.
Great and all but such service should always guarantee to take a patient to a doctor in real world in case of even small doubts about the illness. We could expand it (and I think I've heard about it before) with specialized equipment, devices that gather data about our health, make various measurements and send it to the doctor over the wire. I don't think it will replace seeing doctor face to face but it's a great way to loosen up the queues and make dealing with obvious aches effective.

In my opinion this is a good action to make such things popular. It really make things faster and you do not need to wait in a hospital or clinic.
According to situation in Poland, this method can be extremely good and it could help to regain financial stability/situation because virtual visits would be cheaper for clinics and hospitals and such places. If it was possible, personally I would say I would try this kind of treatment. But I can also say that main disadvantage is that doctor cannot see you in real life and do standard diagnosis which is preceded by some medical examination.

I think this way of treatment is good if we need first contact doctor and when we need quick advice what can we do next. Of course all diseases aren't able to be diagnosed online but in my opinion It's better to consult online than to treat yourself if we have no idea what it is. The consultant can refer us to the right doctor if situation needed this and this can save a lot of our time. Personally I prefer to go to a clinic, but this is because I have it very close to home.

For a doctor to reach diagnosis these are required:
1. History in detail
2. Physical examination
3. Simple physical tests
4. Investigations
In online consultations only first thing is possible that too 50% only… doctor can't focus on patient from somewhere.

Remaining points are not possible resulting in:
1. Misdiagnosis
2 Under diagnosis
3.Wrong medications

I think it is good idea. Not for all cases, but most of the patients needs only some advice or hint, what medicine to take or simply what to do. In case of some bigger problems, more serious diseases, when the doctor needs to see you in person it will not be enough of course, but for patients that need only first advice or needs regular check it can really save much time comparing to visiting doctor in person.

Yes, you're right. But sometimes sypmtoms decribed by a patient can be the beginning of much more serious disease than just a cold. I had such situation 2 months ago. I didn't feel well for a week, but I was taking aspirin and it was quite okay. But then I had a bit higher temperature, went to the doctor and... started from not feeling well I ended up with more than a month of sick leave... It turned out I had a serious disease and shouldn't even leave the house. This disease is difficult to diagnose even when you visit the doctor and would be impossible to diagnose through a phone call.
I think that the work of a doctor is much harder than on a particular set of symptoms to correct diagnosis and prescribe treatment. But in the most simple case I think it should work quite well. In any case, for example, the blood does not pass through the Internet , because this service has very little utility , in my opinion.

I think this is a great idea, in most cases physical examination is not required, for example if you have flu and you just need to visit a doctor to get an obvious prescription for common medications. Although I would prefer replacing doctors with AI, because a chance of a human mistake in diagnosis is really high. Anyway, this is the first step and I think that governments should make necessary regulations in law to allow remote medicine.

Online Doctors is good idea only with very low type of virus and if person wont be ill very serious. Doctors online cant get information about how person really feel and cant investigate some organs in person body. For me it could be use only in some part of diseases.

It's a great idea for a replacement of first contact doctor if you have a simple flue or you need prescription. I would surely try this way, to save my time. When it comes to a serious diseases, online diagnosis could be not enough.

I have never heard about it, but it seems to be a great idea. For example, if the person has no time or possibility to get to the hospital. Or a child - children hate hospitals and doctors, but in a calm home atmosphere a guy on a screen won't scare them. Of course, when it comes to serious deceases, you obviously need to see the doctor in person, but you still can try to talk to your online doc, to get some basic information about where to go in your situation, which tests should you make first. Sometimes you come to the hospital, wait in a queue just to be told to go and make various tests. Then you have to come back, wait in the queue again and so on. If you feel really bad, you get the extra stress. So if it is possible to reduce the amount of hours, spent at the hospital, why not? I would use such consultations with pleasure.

Oh I would like to try it out, I think it's a great way to treat small deceases. Some times you spend more time waiting for the consultation than for the actual consultation. Sometimes you just need to know if your decease worth going to the hospital or you can be treated by the medicals from the local pharmacy. On the other side, I myself feel more comfortable and secure going to the doctor in the hospital. I know that this is a professional who had a long study before start working. But still, I would like to try online doctors.
Funny thing, I was thinking about developing this kind of virtual doctors in Poland a few years ago. I know we are busy and we don't have time to make an appointments and visiting doctors so it would be a great solution. So I think it is a great idea. It saves time and it is efficient. I think this is the future. Now when we type our symptoms in Google most of the time we think we are dying. It is not so great idea to do that. But if we had online contact with doctor it would be more professional for sure. I would definitely use it if it was in Poland. I'm allergic to almost everything and it would save my time at doctor's office. I think this is an amazing idea.
It could definitely reduce queues and help in overall management, but I'm quite sure that it can't really work for majority of the cases. Sure, there are people that will go to the doctor with anything they can come up with, even light headache, and those could indeed benefit from system like this, but when I plan to visit a doctor myself, I typically have a very good damn reason to dedicate my own time and doctor's time on diagnosis, and I'm 100% sure that I wouldn't want to be diagnosed online, it could lead to false diagnosis that could be avoided otherwise.
I have heard about it before and in my opinion it is an interesting idea. It could work with everyday illnesses like common cold. I would try it to check if the doctors would diagnose my illness correctly. It's a good solution for adults that don't have time to go to the doctors.

Yes, I'd definately try this kind of medical treatment, as I'm bored with visiting doctors and hearing that everything is perfectly ok, althought I don't feel like it.
I'm an allergic person so I often go to allergist/dermatologist just to get the same prescription all the time, it's quite irritating that when I know what kind of drug I have to use I need to get the prescription from specific doctor. That's why online doctor visit looks great for me.

I think it is a good idea. In the world of internet and new technologies this solution will perfectly fit. From my experience I can say that I don’t like go to the doc mainly because of long waiting time. Another obstacle is commute to the clinic and once again waiting for your turn. And then you realize that your visit take only few minutes because your illness is not too dangerous . If this platform will be available in Poland I would definitely try it.

I think services like this have many problems and their rising popularity worries me a bit. Nothing can replace contact with a real living doctor who is in the same room. I had a situation where a doctor recommended additional diagnostics because of how I looked. I'm worried that a lot of people will prefer to use online help because of short waiting times and lower prices, which in turn can lead to many missed or bad diagnosis.
Such form of contact with a doctor could work when we're curious about something regarding medicine and we can't find a satisfying answer on the internet, but not when we're feeling sick. Another thing that could work is asking a doctor online to interpret our blood test results and stuff like that, but it shouldn't replace actually going to the doctor.

In my opinion it's very good idea and big opportunity to refactor health service in Poland. I'm sure that now e-diagnostic can't be treated as a common visiting the doctor but it is a big step on the right way :). If there is possibility to try and compare with regular consultation I'll do that.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
