Week 12: Be addicted to the… TV Series

You know that feeling when you should quit but you turn on the next episode, and another, and another... I think that each of us has the series from which we couldn’t get away and we waited impatiently for next episodes. I want to talk about TV Series because Netflix has recently premiered in Poland. Netflix is an American multinational provider of on-demand Internet streaming media. Within a few years the number of Netflix customers is expected to reach 100 million. It shows how many people watch TV series, now even more on the Internet than on Television.  If we're talking about Netflix and popular series , we can’t forget about the House of Cards.

Suits

"Suits" is a series that presents the adventures of lawyers from a prestigious law firm Pearson Hardman in New York. Each of the lawyers working there graduated from Harvard. The exception is Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), he’s a genius with a photographic memory. He was hired by Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), the best lawyer in Pearson Hardman. Harvey appreciated Mike’s extraordinary skills. Ross falsified information about his education and hid the truth from the rest of the staff.

I have seen 2 of the series you've mentioned, Game of Thrones and Sherlock.

I really liked GoT at first, but I don't like the changes they've made in the plot comparing to the books, and the fact that every season gets less and less action and more and more talking. I'm going to watch next seasons, but I have no idea how they'll develop some motifs (some characters are in completely different places than they should be according to the books... some are even dead even though they shouldn't be yet ;))

As to Sherlock, what do you think of the latest episode (if you've seen it?). I liked it, but I've heard people have mixed feelings about it.

Talking about Netflix, I only regret copyrights to some of the TV series are owned by different companies, therefore I won't be able to watch them - Friends, for example.

Apart from the series I've mentioned, I've also watched Two and a Half Men, The Guild, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Anger Management, The IT Crowd, Chuck, Heroes, Orphan Black, The 4400, and countless animated ones, like Death Note or Futurama; some of them were better, some of them worse, but I guess my comments would have to take 10 pages to cover all of them :D
This topic is very well known to me, I admit honestly that I'm addicted to several TV series. Except series mentioned in the article series I really like to watch Vampire Diaries, Flesh and Bone, Supernatural and some others. I watch them several times a week and it makes me frustrated when there are breaks due to holidays or other occasions, because of which sometimes I have to wait 1.5 months for a new episode. It's hard to choose my favourite series, each of them is interesting in its own way and totally different from the others. Once I really liked the Californication and I regret a lot that this production is already finished.

I must admit that I have watched all of the series that you have mentioned. The only one that I didn't finish is Breaking Bad, but I still completed the first season. I remember that I could spend an entire day binge-watching episodes, one after another. Luckily, now I don't have that much time to waste and I'm lucky if I catch one or two per week. As to Netflix being available in Poland, I decided not to get an account. It simply would just too tempting.

Wow all series? Nice :) I understand you, I don't have so much time as ever to watch TV series too.

Nothing lasts forever. Good series, unfortunately, quickly come to an end or after a while they are no longer good :(

There was a point in my life where I used to watch a lot of TV series. Of those that you mentioned I've seen Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Sherlock. I also used to watch Supernatural, Daredevil and Gotham. But at this moment the only series I plan on continuing are Game of Thrones and Daredevil as soon as new episodes air :) I'm not sure why I stopped watching TV series, I guess I felt like they took too much of my time, well, probably it is too much when you try to study, watch TV series and play video games - sacrifeces must be made ;)

Well i love serials because thanks to them i can spend my time in better way - having fun or being thrilled (depends on serial). But what so special about them, is that they are quite long so i can get more information about characters and world than in the movie. They are also shorter what makes them more comfortable when you don't have much time or you need to eat dinner in company of your Tv. I want to add that i don't like most of the "famous" serials. I prefer good story rather than a huge budget productions.

I haven't watched Sherlock yet, but if I ever find the time then I'm going to do it :) Referring to the last episode of Death Note, it was a little disappointed for me. Although the main character was a bad guy I still liked him :P
I watched whole series of Dexter and at the end of this serial I just went "Really? Like, REALLY?! Is this the end of my favorite TV serial?!" :D I really liked this mysterious, double life led by Dexter which was good all in all. Maybe his way of solving cases wasn't very conventional, however, it was a good combination of good deeds in a illegal way, almost like Robin Hood did in the legends :)

I've seen only Game of Thrones from this list.
I see no zombie franchise here, but I've also tried to watch the walking dead.
But I never honestly spend whole day watching tv series.

You can always stop to sleep, then there will be time for everything haha ;)

I have to see this series. It sounds interesting and I heard about Dexter a lot of good reviews.

Thank you for your comment :)
[SPOILER ALERT! :)] I hated every episode after the 25th (I think), when L died. The next ones weren't nearly as good! :)
Unknown said…
To be honest I didn't watch any of these :D It may sounds funny, but I am not a big fan of movies or series, because it is extremely time consuming :( And when I start to watch a whole series i really can't stop unless the season is over :D I really want to see game of thrones, but on the other hand I would rather read a book instead, because I have heard that's a good read :)
I have seen a pilot suits' episode, but I like to watch series in english (not to feel pangs of conscience) and to be honest it was quite hard to understand , because there were a lot of specialised law vocabulary etc. Maybe I gave up too early, many people recommends it so often :D

And according to Netflix - I haven't found in an offer anything that would convince me to use it. I was always thinking that it's such an amazing application, where you can find everything – let's say a Spotify for movies and series, but in fact it is definitely not :(

I used to watch a lot of TV series. Mostly animated ones, a lot of them were anime because I was into this kind of things when I was younger. Today I watch them from time to time only. From the ones you mentioned I watched Game of Thrones, but I had and still have mixed feelings about it. I think that is caused by the fact that I've read the books first and I already had a certain personal image of characters and situations in the story when I started watching the series. I liked it in the beggining, then quit it after the first season (and I have a tendency of abandoning series for any reason), and I came back to it recently to watch everything. I admit that I have a similiar opinion as Patrycja.

Apart from that I follow Vikings, albeit with breaks. I totally recommend watching the series though. :) It's very atmospheric. Not so long ago I also watched The Last Man on Earth, Parks and Recreation, Sleepy Hollow and The Strain aaaand I think that's all? Can't recall watching anything else worth mentioning.

I watch all the films and serials with polish subtitles, because I don't tolerate dubbing and lector. I also don't have understood what was going on in Suits when I hadn't subtitles ;D I recommend you to do one more approach because the series is brilliant :)

My record is two seasons of Mad Man, then I got bored, as always. I'm glad my brain reacts this way, tv series are very addictive. Fortunately I prefer stories told from beginning to end at once.
Nowadays there are a lot of great productions with amazing plot, cast and budget of course but it does not change the fact you still got to track each and every epizode or at least most of them to not
lose the thread. Good thriller movies is definitely my thing, movies not series : )

For sure I am. I subscribe to Netflix and Hulu for two years now. There is no day I don't watch at least one episode of some tv series. I usually do this during breakfast or just before bed time. Life would be so easier if humankind wasn't so creative and didn't invent TV. Like movies in cinema wasn't enough...
Unknown said…
:D I will try, thanks!

Oh that's not true I'm not addicted ... i will only watch new episodes of House of Cards, Game of thrones and breaking bad and i will finish this comment.

3 hours later

Back to the topic :) I believe that because of this article i would have less time for learning as I need to check two new series. As a conclusion, if you don't want to get addicted- do not even start watching tv series.
I enjoy watching TV series, I practice my English by watching without translations. There are compelling and interesting. I use Netflix and can recommend it for others. My favorite series is House of Cards because it shows the audience the dark side of politics. Kevin Spacey is an experienced Oscar winning actor who is now playing a big role of being candidate of President of America.

From this list you prepared I watched House of Cards, Sherlock, and Game of Thrones. Of course I look forward to next seasons. TV series today are prepared often much better than movies, great scenarios, excellent ensemble cast, and a good director - success is guaranteed.
If only there was more time for such pleasures...

Sometimes it is fun to watch something on TV, but I am not a big fan of TV series. I mean that sometimes I can find some series that are interesting to me, but only when I have enough time and not much to do.

I'm not a fan of TV series. I tried a few (Sons of Anarchy remains being my favorite one), but I always felt like I had to somehow force myself to sit in front of a screen just to watch something that takes hours and I had some trouble with finishing even this one. I don't have a TV at all, and I rarely watch anything on my computer, and it's not like I have anything in particular against it, I just find it personally very hard to focus on something like that. I always tend to just start doing something else after fifteen minutes or so, because I've got this very annoying feeling that I should be doing something else instead. Movies work better for me, but I still prefer doing other things instead.

I'm not particularly keen on TV Series but my girlfriend is. One day she was watching Game of thrones episode and asked me to join. When i saw
one episode i couldn't stop watching. I spent whole weekend striving to make up for all the previous seasons. In my opinion this TV series was perfomed better
than the most of high-budget hollywood movies. I'm a bit afraid to start any other TV series (I heard that Breaking Bad is really good!) because
after one episode I would have to take a holiday in job and watch the whole series!

I have watched some of TV series you presented (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones). Im about to start watching House of Cards, but i cant say im addicted to watching TV series, because they arent so involving like e.x books.. But if you are a big fan of "series" i recommend you to watch "Rome" series (It's about ancient Rome) and BBC Planet Earth series (from 2006 by David Attenborough).

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of series because for me it is a waste of time which at mode work-school I've got very little. Moreover, I prefer a good movie or going to the theater. I heard about Netflixi I am very pleased that finally have provided something like that in Poland, certainly many people are happy because of that.

I watch at least one episode every day, it's disturbing how easly we can be addicted to something not knowing about it. But it also have bright sides, i watch tv series in english sometimes with english subtitles.
Everyone will find something for himself becouse there are so many different kinds of topics
I think that they made a tv series about every possible story.

It's great that Netflix is now available in Poland. I watched all mentioned series except for "Suits" - and I'm not sure whether it's good or bad, because all those series are great, but it's a lot of "wasted time" :)
The best made series I have seen would be "Breaking Bad". It's not light watch, but it has it's funny moments. I would recommend it to anyone because it's really really good.
My favourite serial is "House of Cards" and I just can't wait for the new season. Maybe it's not as phenomenal as "Breaking Bad" but I still had a lot of fun with it, and I love the characters, especially Clair Underwood (and everything she's wearing). If I were to recommend something light and funny my choice would be "Sherlock". It's executed in an interesting way and it's leading Freeman-Cumberbatch duo is its best part.
In my opinion the worst made (but apparently most popular) series I watch is Game of Thrones. It's definitely engaging, but from what I heard it really differs from the source material and has a lot of unnecessary scenes just to attract more viewers. If you're new to the whole "Game of Thrones" thing, I'd recommend reading the book first.

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr
