Week 9 (18.05-24.05) Three Worst Aviation Disasters In History

Airplane accidents somehow attract public attention with their drama and destruction. Any car accident doesn’t equal the size of air disaster. Comparable could be possibly train or ship crashes like Titanic . Below you have three largest plane catastrophes in history.

1.  Tenerife Airport Disaster, 27 March 1977

http://randomstory.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/14.jpg

It is the worst accident in the history of commercial aviation. 583 people died after two Boeing 747s (KLM – Dutch airlines and Pan Am) collided on a runway in Tenerife at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport). This case is classic miscommunication, human failure. The following series of circumstances contributed to the sad end. First of all, it was very foggy. The KLM flight was in a hurry because of strict Dutch regulations of flying quota. They fueled the plane in Tenerife instead of Gran Canaria to save time. This caused that the plane was heavier and it’s contributed to a bigger explosion. Finally the cause was a human failure. Detailed communication errors you can find at the official report or Wikipedia article:

2. Japan Airlines Flight 123, 12 August 1985

This was a flight from Tokyo to Osaka. A plane crashed into Mount Takamagahara. 520 people died in Boeing 747 and 4 people survived. It’s the worst single-aircraft disaster in history. Several minutes after take off, the rear bulkhead (area between cabin and tail) failed, tearing off the rudder and simultaneously destroying all four hydraulic systems. The pilot lost control of the plane. The cause of the accident was tracked back to a tailstrike during a landing seven years before, which badly scratched the bottom of the plane. The repairs couldn’t possibly survive so many flights.

3.  Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision, 12 November 1996

Source: http://im.rediff.com/news/2011/aug/03sli5.jpg

This disaster occurred when a Saudi Arabian Airline Flight 763 (Boeing 747-168B) collided with the Kazakhstani Airline Flight 1907 (Il-76) over the village of Charkhi Dadri in Haryana. All of passengers and crew died – 349 people. The commission determined that collision had been the fault of Kazakh pilot who descended from the assigned altitude of 15,000 to 14,500 feet and subsequently 14,000 feet and even lower. The report ascribed the cause to the lack of English language skills. Kazakh pilots sometimes confused calculation because they using meters altitudes and kilometer distance, while other countries miles and feet.

I've heard about the first one, but never about the other two. Aviation disasters are always on the front pages of all newspapers and all over the internet because they cause more fatalities (in one event) than other, more common, accidents. One big issue is always more visible than many small ones.

Here you can find some really interesting statistical data on the topic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_safety#Comparison_to_other_modes_of_travel
Plane crashes are actually able to surrender our doubts boarding the plane, but we are not ever be able to predict when it could come to a tragedy. Nowadays thankfully such incidents are declining, far more often they are the terrorist attacks than any other reason. Situations that cause the death of hundreds of people can not get around without any comment. It is important to mention also the subject of another tragedy that took from this world far more people, I mean catastrophe of 9/11.
Yeah, I know that plane is very safety type of transport, but you don't have control and you must trust the pilot :) Statistic from your link show me that I'm in very very high-risk group, because I ride a motorcycle.

I like plains.
I've traveled by planes and I'm really fond of this method of travelling. I've heard about some accidents concerning planes, but they happen rarely nowadays. For me it's quite reassuring that the risk of getting seriously injured is comparatively low; if a plane crashes, it's almost a certain and rather a quick death.

Crashes like that make me think about the responsibility lying on the constructors, engineers, technicians and other people involved in constructing and maintaing a plane. If any of them fails, it can lead to death of hundreds of people.
Thanks. The September attacks were definitely the most terrible disaster in history, nearly 3000 people died. I thinking about it and In my opinion this is terroristic attack, so it's the different category of my three worst aviation disaster.

In the previous year the lowest number of aviation accidents was documented. Despite the tragedy of the Airbus in the French Alps, the year 2015 still has a chance to maintain this trend. For 40 years fatalities in air accidents are steadily decreasing.

At the same time the plane remains the safest means of transportation. Moreover, despite the rapid development of air transport decade by decade, the number of fatalities is decreasing in passenger aircrafts.

I also recommend looking into some charts:

Plane accidents are rare, but they create a much bigger impact on us because they are catastrophic and almost always lead to death of everyone onboard. Flying in a plane is actually safer than driving a car or riding a bike but car (and bike) accidents are less noticeable because they happen everyday. You could say that people are used to them. And the number of fatalities is not as shocking as in the case of a plane crash.

I've travelled by plane many many times and I love that means of transport. I like the atmosphere of airports, the start and landing (the moments which most people are afraid of I believe).
I was flying exactly 24 times and I have never gotten used to it. I sometimes have a nightmare where I find myself in the USA and I am scared of coming back by plane : P

On the other hand I would like to fly a jet fighter very much, take control over it. I don't like passenger planes because they are piloted by someone I can't even see and there are too many things that can go wrong.

Like in every mean of transportation, accidents happen also in aviation. However, they are rare and travelling by plane is still the safest way of travelling. I think planes are a great and efficient way of travelling. Thanks to development of technology, number of accidents is also dropping every year.
The most I afraid of plane starting. Then is propbably the greatest chance to failure. The view from sky often are breathtaking, in especially when I flew over the Alps.
I agree with you that technoogy help to reduce aviation accident. On the other hand technology gives new space to threat. I heard one week ago that passenger Chris Roberts - IT specialist, hacked the plane devices and he can changed the flight parameters.

I love flying despite of my fear of heihgts. I admire an pilots for their responsibility. According to me the most terrible plane tragedy is Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya 571 which was happened in Andy. People who was flying this plane crushed in mountains. A lot of their was alived but they must fight for survivals because they did not have food and water. They were forced to cannibalism. More you can read here: http://www.viven.com.uy/571/eng/historia.asp

I am not afraid of flying but I do not like it. I am always very tired after a long flight. However, my best friend is a fight attendant in Gulf Air airlines so I would prefer not to think about the worst aviation disasters in the history because honestly I cannot imagine my life without her.

You’re totally right when you talk: “Airplane accidents somehow attract public attention “. It’s horrible but it’s true :/ You show us only world plane catastrophes. Also history of Poland have a few similar stories. It may be a good topic for the next presentation.
It is horrible for me how many people die in the same moment.
Although airplane is one of the most safe means of transport, I'm a little afraid of fllying. I don’t fly very often and I’m glad for it. I don’t like fly in view of pressure.
Planes accidents are so terryfing because a lot of people dies at the same time, but actualy I think that being in the car is far more dangerous than being on the plane. Do you agree?
As I recall correctly her airlines are pretty cool? Can you say something more abut it?
You said that you are not very keen on flying, so what is your favourite kind of transport?
I have to admit that starting is the best part for me:P Some adrealine, becasue the whole flight can be rather boring, there is not enought space to walk freely like on the train and landing can my pretty hurtful for my ears....

I’ve never flown by plane. I am a person who Is afraid of planes. Some people said that the planes are the most safest machines in the world. In media you can hear really rarely about plane catastrophes. I wonder what happened to Malaysian Airlines because this plane has never been found. It is so sad and awful to not to be able to find anybody from your family and that you can’t burry them and for the last time to see them. People learn a little bit more about how to make this kind of transport safer thanks to all of the accidents . It is sad that a lot of people died because of people mistakes.

Most of aircraft catastrophes are caused by human failure and we can’t protect ourselves from them until it happens. But the good side of them is they happen rarely and casualties don’t suffer for a long period of time.

Although I'm aware that planes are said to be the safest means of transport, I'm still afraid of air travels. Car accidents do happen more often but people have greatest chances of surviving them that victims of plane crashes. What's more, we have to trust the pilots and in the past 15 years there have been some cases of terrorist plane attacks, which is even more terrifying. Nevertheless, even taking into account the aforementioned facts, I know that planes are the most convenient means of transport and they're simply worth the risk.
Yes, you're right. I think that statistic don't lie, but in the World are more cars than plane :)
Unfortunately, people mistakes are the most frequent cause of plane accident. Did you hear about aviation disaster, when crazy pilot, closed door to the cabin and crashed the plane ?
Unknown said…
I can’t read about plane crashes. It causes that I begin to be afraid to fly airplanes. I know that on the road are happen more accidents, but these accidents aren’t synonymous people death but when something goes wrong with planes it can be dangerous for all people who travel this plane.
Aviation Disasters are really bloodcurdling.

All these catastrophes make me very sad and afraid of flying. The more I hear about this stuff, the more afraid I am. When I was younger I loved flying, watching clouds and tiny houses, but now I am all very nervous and I get this funny feeling in my stomach, like in these very fast elevators.

I would like to mention one of the most recent aviation disasters - the one in which a pilot commited suiscide and took 500 people with him. It makes me furious - ok, if he wanted to end his life so be it, some people don't have better option, but why take so many lives away?

The other thing is that almost-disaster that happened a couple of years ago, when an airplane flying from USA had to land in Okęcie airport without the landing gear. I find the pilot's focus, professionalism and skills very inspiring. My friends were on this plane and they said that nobody told them nothing to avoid the panic. They started to feel that something was wrong when the plane was making circles above the airport for some time. Then suddenly they started landing and it was a little bit harder than usually. They had to evacuate the plane sliding from these pontoons. They are not traumatized at all and they haven't stopped travelling by planes:) However I have other friends that always travel separately in case that if something happened their children would have one parent to take care over them.

You mean this accident with Germanwings? I heard about it and also that after the crash they wantet to change the law concerning planes.
Unknown said…
Even though those catastrophes look terrible and tragic, however, it must be mentioned that there are much more people die in the car accidents. At least I will prefer to fly. Airplanes are considered as one of the most safest kind of transport (despite the situations when some guys from non-existing state are firing down civil planes in the name of the freedom, prosperity, recognition and of course self-defense, you know, those damn civil planes are real danger for every ninny who byes anti-air weapon on the local market).
It's a well known fact that the risk of dying from a car accident is far bigger than dying from a plane crush. However, when the plane is crushing then there is a moment when you know you are about to die and you can do nothing about it. That's what makes this cause of death that much more terrifying.
Plane travel fright in my opinion in significantly more prevalent than ever before because of many factors.
But mainly after 9/11 the terrorist attack paranoia has been elevated to atrocious levels (even if there weren't that many successful plane captures since then).
Also flying in a giant metal tube might scare some people simply because it's the most unnatural transportation on earth for humans - after all we aren't suppose to fly :)

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...

Week 4 [06-12.11.2017] This is what happens when you reply to spam email.

James Veitch is a British comedian. In today’s Ted Talk James with characteristic for himself a sense of humor shows how he deals with spam emails and why responding to junk messages may be sometimes dangerous. Questions: What do you think about James’s  way of dealing with spam? Why are junk messages legal, even though it sometimes may be a fraud? Dou you have a problem with spam? How do you deal with with it?
