Week 4 (30.03-12.04) - Vegan Restaurants in Warsaw

Veganism has  become more and more popular over the last years. Everyone wants to eat healthy and lead a lifestyle that doesn't t harm animals. So in order to meet those needs there were opened vegan restaurants. A few years ago they weren't so popular as these days. If you go, for example, to Krowarzywa at lunch time, there will be a queue of 15 people waiting for their burgers. So be careful in picking your eating time in this restaurant. A few years ago people who went vegan and love fast food like hot dogs or pizzas were disappointed because there weren't vegan places to eat those dishes. But in the last few years there has been opened many places with vegan pizzas, hot dogs, burgers, etc. Now I'd like to introduce to you some of these places.

Krowarzywa

It's one of the most popular vegan slow food restaurants in Warsaw. Burgers are its specialty. They have about 6 kinds of them with different kinds of bread, even gluten-free. They also have delicious sauces. The price range is about 15 zloty for a burger. My girlfriend and I are vegans so every time we take our friends there they are surprised how good vegan burgers are. The spot is quite small and austerely furnished but there is a great atmosphere. It's open until 11 pm, and what is more interesting you can meet there a lot of people at this time, not only at the weekend.

Vegemiasto

In contrast to Krowarzywa it's a typical restaurant and it's quite big. There are  about 10 tables and as opposed to Krowarzywa there is a toilet. They have delicious dishes, especially cakes. Sometimes you can even eat there a cake made from only raw ingredients. If you want to spend some time with your mates, it's an ideal place for you. They have also special offer for Christmas, you can buy vegan traditional dishes for example pie or mayo. A month ago they added alcohol to their offer.

Vegan pizza

If you love pizzas, it's the best place for you. There is about 30 kinds of pizza with vegan cheese! The service is very nice and fast. The prize range is about 24 zlotys. My favorite pizza there is “Śródziemnomorskie tofu” on a thick crust. They have got great meat replacements like vegan ham or tuna, but for me it's superfluous. Maybe it will convince someone who eats meat. There are many pictures of a local artist on sale.

There are certainly more vegan restaurants; e.g.  Jamniczek or Marrakesh Cafe, the last one is near the PJATK in the Millennium building.

Questions:
1. Do you eat in one of those restaurants?
2. Do you like vegan food?
3. What's your attitude to eating animals?

Oh I simply love Krowarzywa, it's one of my favorite places.

I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian but I eat meat occasionally and I never make it at home myself. My mother and sister are vegetarians (because they just don't like meat) and I think I could stop eating meat at all but I could never give up cheese, milk or eggs. I hope one day people will be able to create artificial meat with the same flavor and nutrition so people who like meat could eat it without killing animals.

If someone wants to try some vegan food I highly recommend a book with recipes "Jadłonomia".

I've never tried any of these places, but maybe some day... I tried few vegetarian and vegan dishes in an Indian restaurant and I cannot say it was something special. I heard a lot of positive things about Krowarzywa though and I would like to taste their speciality :)

I cosider myself very connected to nature and I respect it greatly. Above all, humans are omnivores. Eating meat is as natural for us as sleeping and I definitely don't think about changing my diet to vegetarian/vegan.
I love to cook and prepare meat, mostly beef, veal, venison and turkey. I also like fish and I try to buy these caught in the open ocean. I usually don't eat pork.

People don't need a lot of meat in their diet. It's the best to eat small amounts of it, but what's most important, only from good source! There is nothing healthy in eating apples covered in pesticides or chicken saturated with antibiotics.

For me vegetarianism/veganism in most of cases is only a trend, a fashion. It's like one of these 1st world problems - people are comfortable and they can afford to be picky :)
Very often inconsistency goes along with this kind of ideologies. A lot of people who call themselves (proudly) vegetarians/vegans buy laether shoes when winter comes. On the other hand there are also vegetarian fundamentalists with 'us against them' mentality. Well... I wish people are reasonable and don't look for another idea to artificially divide the society.

In fact, I like some vegetarian dishes that are not normally called in that fancy manner, for example russian dumplings! They are 'vegetarian', right? :)

I am not vegan and I will never be. Although they sound delicious and may be, in my opinion they can't beat meals containing all sorts of ingredients including proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables. For me the best meal is such blending all the spices together and connecting different types of food together.

For me experiencing eating fully also means trying out everything nature has to offer. The truth is humans are designed to eat food and will never stop. Eating meat was crucial for our generation to survive, stay healthy and strong and develop our brains.

In the near future though (10 years), there is a chance that people will develop cheap ways of "growing" meat from a single meat cells. What this means is that the grown meat will be as good as the traditional one, and no animals will suffer. Would you, vegans and vegetarians try eating some meat if this was possible?

I like vegan food. Vegan are potatoes, tomatoes, onions, pastas... i like that! But I also like cheese and meat and milk and eggs... so I can't imagine myself living without eating those.

My attitude towards eating animals is that the only thing that I am against of is animal cruelty and suffering. I wish all animals could have the best possible environment to live a healthy and happy life.
I'm not a vegan, but a pescetarian - this means I don't eat meat except fish (other types of meat simply disgust me - I get nausea every time I see a piece of gristle, fat, skin or other thing like that). That's why I often eat vegetarian or vegan food.

I've already tried vegan burgers, not in Krowarzywa, but in Chwast Food near Metro Politechnika - they're delicious, although really big and therefore hard to eat :) There are also vegan hot-dogs in a place called Jamniczek near plac Konstytucji.

Other place I like eating in is a place called Loving Hut, also near Metro Politechnika. It's Asian cuisine, but 100% vegan. My non-vegetarian friends who were there with me claimed some of the saitan "meat" resembled real meat very much. And I'm in love with their pandanus cake!
I would try "growing" meat - though my problem with meat is the disgust it causes in me, so it would have to be non-griste, non-fat etc. to make me eat it :)

I think this is the first time when I heard about vegan restaurants. I don’t eat in such places because I’m not a vegan person, I’m more of a traditional type. I like eating all kinds of food and I love trying something new. I find some food disgusting and strange to eat like for example in china people don’t hesitate eating a dog or a horse and I would definitely not try them. In Warsaw there is a controversial restaurant called “Co To To Je” where you can try insects. I wish I would go there some day to see with my own eyes how it looks like and how they taste.

I have heard about KroWarzywa and after reading your good recommendation (that I have heard plenty of times) I simply MUST give it a try :D I am not vegan nor vegetarian nor allergic to gluten, but it might be interesting experience :D

I have met a girl that is vegan and allergic to gluten and I can see how extremely hard it is to eat out... I didn't have an idea how inconvinient it might be. That's why I am really happy to see how many new places are opening nowadays.
Have you heard about Kik fit bar on ursynów?
http://www.kikfitbar.pl/
I never been there, but I have heard it is amazing! The best thing is that you can eat there REALLY healthy :) And they have choice of vegan/vegetarian/ gluten free products as well :) Quite expensive tho, but I think that possibility of eating healthy recompenses it :D
I'm not a vegan and I think that there is really no way to live through life without causing harm directly or indirectly to animals. Just to make one thing clear - I think that everyone is free to have their own opinion about almost everything and I respect that if someone wants to be a vegan. In my personal opinion though well... even if you eat only plants then what? Where do those plants grow? On fields? Do you know what people did to whole ecosystem of animals living there to make room for fields? Nevermind, if someone wants to believe that he/she is not harming animals by their very existence, that's ok. The only thing I don't tolerate about some of the vegans is that some of them force even their carnivourus pets to eat vegan food instead of meet. On the other hand I am very happy that there are more and more vegan restaurants. It gives people wider choice of food. I tried some vegan and vegetarian meals some time ago and unfortunately I didn't like most of them. Perhaps after reading this presentation I will give it another shot - if it is that healthy then why not?

1. Do you eat in one of those restaurants?
No, I don't but if one was close to my place I would try it.

2. Do you like vegan food?
I like food, any food which is tasty and healthy.

3. What's your attitude to eating animals?
My attitude is that I need to eat them, I don't like vegans who are fanatics. I might have change my diet to eat only seafood.

I have never eaten in a vegan restaurant but I would love to try Krowarzywa and Vegan pizza. It must be delicious! I eat vegan food very rarely probably because no one I know is vegan. However I know a great vegan blog Jadłonomia (http://www.jadlonomia.com/ ) I like food that is healthy, lean, clean and tasty and Jadłonomia’s recipes combine it all.
I do not eat a lot of meat because I do not like its taste so much. But I do not have problem with people who like to eat it.

I love Krowarzywa, since I've been there first time it became one of my favourites place in Warsaw. Every time when I'm on a walk I step into for Tofex or Cieciorex. I've heard about other places
with vegan slow food, latest is Mango, I haven't been there, yet. I like vegetarian and vegan food, I find it quite healthy. I'm not vegan neither vegetarian, but I try to eat as little meat as it is possible.
I think I'll become a pescetarian or even vegetarian one day, but I can't imagine myself without cheese or eggs. Being vegan is too much for me, but I admire such people. I would recommend you this blog with delicious vegan recipes: http://wegannerd.blogspot.com/

I was in Vegemiasto couple years ago and I ordered vegan ice cream. I eat sometimes in Marrakesh - they have great soups. My favourite vegan restaurant is Loving Hut. Dish called “golden tofu” tastes amazing.

I like vegan food. My diet is mostly based on plant ingredients. When it comes to animal products I eat eggs only.

I don't mind people who eat animals. I can fully understand carnivores and their desire to devour meat. I chose to refrain from eating the flesh of animals simply because I do not find it tasty.

I know a person who goes to vegan after trying some recipes from Jadłonomia book.

Yes they are vegetarin but not vegan :) I would say more, people don't need meat in they diet!

You should try burgers in Krowarzywa, people say that they are better then in Chwast Food! I have been in Jamniczek, but their hot-dogs are not so good.

Ohh, I don't want event see insects dish. You should go and try some vegan food!

Pay more for food and less for doctors, this is my motto! I'm allegric to coat, but vegan/witarian diet help me a lot and now i don't have any symptoms of the disease.

You should definitely read about paleo diet!

I approve your choice, Cieciorex is the best!

I have never been in Loving Hut, but after all this good comments I think, I should go there!

Good one! Like it :D

Why not ? You should try something new ;)

I think that this kind of food looks really tasty. I like eating hummus and generally a lot of vegetables and fruits. It has a lot of vitamins and nutritional value. I haven't been in vegan restaurant. I heard about krowarzywa from my friends. They recommended me this place. Maybe I didn't eat in vegan restaurant because I don't imagine word without meat. although meat sometimes is high-calorie for example pork. That's why I cook mainly chicken and turkey- lean meat. Moreover I don't imagine life without fish in particular salmon. I love this fish in every form.
Unknown said…
No, I don't specifically eat in such restaurants because I'm not vegan, but after reading your article and some of the comments here I feel I absolutely need to visit Krowarzywa.

As for vegan food, I think it's great! It can be really tasty, it's definitely healthy and, judging from the photos in your article, can look gorgeous! ;) I don't eat meat often (for no specific reason, I guess I simply don't need much), but I have nothing against it in general. However, just like Paulina, I could not give up milk, eggs, cheese and other dairy products, and I love fish.

I ate meal only in Krowarzywa. For me it's good restaurant with simply dishes and pleasant service. I'm not a vegan, but I know a lot of people who are vegans because of healthy lifestyle (e.g. healthy diet or they must to eat dishes without meat which makes them allergy) or because of their beliefs. First of all I underline that I love all animals, but I think that I could not exist without meat on my daily diet. I understand all of arguments for not eating meat and I'm tollerant person, but I think that meat in daily diet is necessery for human organism. People for a long time eat meat. According to nutritionists meat are necessery but only in small quantities and not every type. Meat is the best source of balanced protein. It contains all the essential aminoacids, which the body can not produce and which are needed to build tissues. Next advantage is that it is better digestible protein than the vegetable protein. More you can check here: http://authoritynutrition.com/7-evidence-based-health-reasons-to-eat-meat/.

I have to admit that I'm a huge fan of meat. My daily diet consists mostly of chickens with rice and I can't imagine myself giving up on that. For me it's natural that the stronger individuals (humans) kill the weaker ones (animals), but the way we do that matters. I mean that I always buy my food from the eco farms, for example I always pay attention on the origin of the eggs I buy, I don't want the ones from the tiny cages but these from the free-range. I know a lot of vegetarians, my sister is one of them and she always try to encourage me to change my diet. She has took me to the Krowarzywa and I have to admit - the burgers there are totally delicious! Nevertheless I'm not going to stop eating meat, it's too effortful for me to prepare meals that are filling and nutrious.

I'm not a vegetarian at all, but I'm always curious about new things, also when it comes about food. Currently in my hometown is lasting the week of veganism so my girlfriend who is really really into new eating trends (she has just stopped talking about gluten-free diet and already fell in love with diet without meat.....) took me to some vegan restaurants and lectures encouraging to the change of the lifestyle. That's really interesting but I'm still not going to give up on meat. I can reduce the amount of it but not cut down to the level of 0. I think that it's not necessary and it will change nothing except the fact that I'll have to spend more time preparing my meals.
I have never been in any of those restaurants.I am not a vegetarian and I will definitely never be. However I do like some recipes that might be considered as vegetarian dishes. Of course I like dairy products like milk and cheese as well as eggs and vegetables. Nonetheless they are not enough for me, I have to add meat to my nutrition plan.
I am not agains eating animals. The most important factor is health. It is hard to change eating habits and develop balanced eating plan. In my opinion the absorption of iron is not that same from plants and from animal products. Surely we can satisfy all needs by taking vitamin supplements, but in the same time we can avoid taking pills.
Being vegetarian brings a lot of inconvenience and problems with satisfying nutrition of proteins, iron, vitamin B12, calcium and many many more. It seems reasonable only in term of vegetarianism and religion aspect.

I have never eaten in a vegan restaurant. I have never heard about this places, but I’m not interested in restaurants. I’m not a vegan, so this is the second argument why I’ve never heard about it :D I’m ordinary man who usually prepare my food at home. I usually cook dinner. I don’t eat in the restaurants. By the way I love name KroWarzywa :D Maybe I will try their food :D I eat meat and I don’t imagine my life without meat. I don’t eat every kind of meat. I usually eat meat from the rubbit the turkey and beef.
I know only krowarzywa restaurant, but I never been there . My sister is vegetarian, so heard sometimes about vegenews. Personally I love meat, so I avoid vegan restaurant. I was in Marrakesh in Millenium Plaza once, but it’s not my taste area. I left this place hungry. I prefer junk food :D I don’t have any problem with eating animals, I’m carnivore and It’s not my fault.

I keep on planning to go to KroWarzywa but I never get to it. I have to make it up soon because I see that there are many more vegan/vegetarian places worth visiting. I'm not on a meat-free diet myself, but I do enjoy the dishes served in places with this cuisine. From the restaurants that you've mentioned, I visited only Marrakesh. From what I heard, they seem to have a fairly positive opinion, but my visit left me unsatisfied - probably due to the clash of real Moroccan cooking and what is available here.

warning for vegetarians: If you are avowed vegetarian who believes that people should stop killing animals for food.. for your good sake please stop reading my post righ here :-).
For me idea of not eating meat is so terrifying.. I even cant imagine that i wont eat meat (in any form) at least once per day! Vegan food is realy good, but it would be much better with a big, juicy cutlet :) And, as you probable guessed, i'm ok with killing animals - but without cruelity, animals should be killed fast and as much painless as possible. And regarding to VeganRestaurants - i've never been in such places, but i would like to give it a try :)

I really can understand people who decided to give up with eating meat. Many times I had the dillemas around this subject. The meat productions is not as good as it should be. Mass productions in slaughterhouses looks good as long as this is done in a humane manner. In many cases it looks differrent, cause production is profit-oriented.
Personally, my diet contains everything :) I like many tastes, meat is one of them, but I really enjoy vegan propositions - these dishes are very filling and healthy. Menu in restaurants always contains creative propositions for meal. I like it. I must visit Krowarzywa, I heard lots of positive opinion about this place. Your presentation confirmed that :)
I love vegan restaurants I gave up meat about 3 months ago. Not completley though. I used to eat it almost everyday, now I do it once a week. And I have to be honest I feel way better. It wasn't too good for me. And my iron value have improved - I had to much of it in my blood, that's why I decided to reduce the amunt of meat in the first place. I really like the first restaurant you've mentioned. Food is good but there is not enought place to eat it so I always order for takeaway. I really have to check out the rest of restaurants. I myslef can recommend "Tel - Awiv". Great hummus, falafelle and lovely soups like carrot soup with chilli...The more vegetables we eat the healthier we are;)
I agree that giving meat can be caused by moral arguments but it's not the only one. When you eat a lot of meat you can easily become acidulated...so it's not always good. I agree that the best way is to keep balance and ear evereything resonably....
I love hummus, did you know that recently there was a hummus event in Warsaw?:D Check out Tel-Awiv restaurant:)

Recently I switched from salmon to tuna. It seems that it is healthier because it is not grown, it only lives in the wild...What do you think about it?
I love that blog, not only for recepies but also for great pictures of dishes. Girl from that blog have recently published a book. Have you seen it?

Only I had the opportunity to eat at Krowarzywo. Several times I was there, and the food was weary good. Personally I like to sometimes eat something without meat. I really like vegan food and sometimes I even that food cooks.
I understand people who do not eat meat and I have nothing against it. I even have some friends vegans. For me to start a vegan diet would be very difficult. In my opinion, (as already said several people) eating / not eating meat is morally difficult subject.

Thanks for your article! I'd love to visit some vegan places that are actually recommended by vegans and frequent visitors;) am really curious about this vegan pizza place!

Speaking of vegan burgers - I've recently come across a great and very simple recipe for carrot/millet (? - kasza jaglana) burgers, you can find it here: www.jadlonomia.com/2012/03/najlepsze-wegeburgery-na-swiecie.html I love jadlonomia blog and I own the book written by it's author Marta Dymek. I have cooked countless things from her blog and the recipes always work. I love her bean/pear pâté, lentil pâté, vegan smalec, sweets etc.

Vegan food is very healthy! I cook frequently and I try out a lot of new recipes. Currently I am fascinated by vegan cuisine and I constantly discover something new, some new uses for everyday fruits vegetables. Even though I mix vegan food with meat, I consider myself more aware of what I eat and how it influences me.

For cooking at home, I recommend jadlonomia.com (also the book!) and kwestiasmaku.pl (zielony środek). I've also got a Paul McCartney book - "Meat Free Monday Cookbook". McCartney persuades people to eat less meat: "global livestock industry is responsible for up to a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions, either through nitrous oxide from animal slurry, methane from animals’ rears and carbon dioxide from crops to feed farmed animals.
In the book’s foreword, Sir Paul explains how by going vegetarian for just one day a week, people can 'make a huge difference for the better and set a new pattern for the future of this beautiful planet that we all inhabit'." I like the idea behind this book and also that it is divided into chapters referring to the four seasons - it teaches how to eat seasonal ingredients. There are five recipes for meals for each Monday of the year.

I've never eaten it in Warsaw, but I've eaten it in Odessa, Ukraine very often.

I've never been in any of mentioned restaurants. I am not a vegetarian and I don't imagine I'll ever give up eating meat.
I don't mind vegan foods, but I'm not a big fan of these types of diets. Rather, I am a person who can't imagine a diet without meat. Of course I love eating fruits and vegetables, however, I believe that a meal without meat is not a full-fledged.

I've already been to Vegan Pizza with my friend last month. I have to admitt we were a bit frightened but we took that risk and it was definitely worth it. That pizza have become my second favourite pizza in whole Warsaw, but in fact it was the first vegan pizza I've ever tried. There were a lot, and I mean A LOT of vegetables in it, that were tender and crisp in the same time. Even "cheese" was made of coconut but what absolutely blew my mind was the vegan "cake" - tough and sweetish - just perfect. I will definitely annex this place to my lunch-list.

I am also a regular in Marrakesh near our school. The food is really fresh and I am crazy about their specific, intensive, robust flavour. They have also very attractive lunch offer, but mostly I choose just the main dish just for 15 pln. I recommend this place for everyone who is into eastern cuisine.
