Week 2 (16-22.03) BODY LANGUAGE

Body language

Hey guys, we’ve already discussed a pretty serious topic concerning capital punishment, so it is a good idea to have something not that serious and more positive. I have been interested in the body language for a long period of time, but to develop this topic into something more organized and logical I have decided right now.

Recently I have found a video made by Amy Cuddy ‘Your body language shapes who you are’. A pretty interesting, informative and easy to comprehend video, if you are interested in the body language as me – please, look at the video. You will find some funny moments and interesting information about that topic. For those who are not that interested and hates to watch long videos, please, look here

Well, guys, if you’re bored of watching videos or you just got curious of it, here are a few body language facts that would come useful and probably will help you during your conversations with people.
Direct eye contact means that your listener is interested in you and what you are talking; however, don’t forget about cultural differences as in some cultures direct eye contact could be offensive.
Shaking your legs means that you are impatient, nervous or even scared in some situations. It could be irritating for the others, so try to control that thing, if you care of course.

Arms crossed means that you are trying to defend yourself or at least you feel uncomfortable, but sometimes crossed arms just mean just crossed arms and nothing more.

Smiling, well, here everything is obvious – you feel comfortable; however, sometimes it also depends on the type of smile. We all know different types of smile and definitely can understand when a smile looks more like an evil grin

  1.    Do you believe that it is possible to understand a man by his gestures and movements?
  2.    Is it hard for you to keep your gestures under control?
  3.    Do you have some specific movements or gestures that are irritating you?
  4.    Come up with your own question if you want and spread the topic =)

Although there is no one single template fitting every single one of us, there are behaviors which we share and which occur in everyone. It definitely helps us to understand others though I wouldn't rely on it too much. It is easy to be mislead by some gestures that we think are a particular sign of emotion, because everyone is different and we also tend to control it.

No I don't think it is hard for me to keep my body under control. Honestly I am trying to express myself in a way helping others understand my intentions and I do it under full control of my body.

I don't have any specific irritating gestures but I don't like it if some of them are occuring too often. Any gesture is good in a form of improvisation but it's irritating to see them becoming a habit.

What kind of gestures do you think you have?
Unknown said…
I think that it may be possible to get an inside of somebody's fillings by observing their movements but as you said, crossed arms can mean something or absolutely nothing, so I wouldn't read too much into it all. Only if I know someone very well I'm able to recognize their feelings by gestures and my boyfriend is really good at that and can always see if something is wrong.

I don't think that it's hard for me to keep my gestures under control. I'm a pretty calm person. I also don't have any specific movements that irritate me.

There was an interesting series called "Lie to me" where a guy is "reading" people's gestures and mimicry. It's fiction of course but some of the techniques that they're using in the series might be true. Check it out if you are interested in the topic.

I am of the opinion that body language is very important and helpful in life. It is necessary to know it when you want to be successful. Body language can help you achieve your goals because you can have control over how you want to be perceived. I agree with Amy Cuddy that your body language shapes who you are. Another plus is that you also can understand people better.
Unknown said…
It is not only about the men but women too. You can easily say what someone has on their mind by looking at body language. I think that we just cant not use gestures because it is subconscious and part of our human non-verbal communication.
I'm not the type of person who gets irritated by gestures.
Reading your presentation reminds me of one guy who can get easily into your mind. By looking at you he can easily read important information from your “mind”. It was an experiment in which they asked people to give their credit card and think about their card password. They did what they were asked to do and the mentalist went with them to the ATM and typed their password showing them that he easily guessed their thoughts.

Body language is soo important, it is almost like universal language. Everyone understand certain amount of movements automatically, subconsciously. It can be very helpful, because it is almost impossible to fool your body language, sometimes it is really hard to control yoursefl....I always try to realy on body language, sometimes even more that the actual words someone is saying to me. I can see if somebody's body movement does not match with his/her words. It is good both in professional and provate life. When you understand people better you can communicate with them better and sometimes people won't say sameting because of the culture or they are simply telling lies...
Unknown said…
I don't think it is about gestures that someone has, it is about how the body reacts to certain words/situations....I don't think I have any specific gescure, which I do often but I must admit that it is really hard to hide astonishement for example...
Unknown said…
Wow, I also remember this guy, I think we are talking about the same one, but I don't remember his name :(
It's really amazing when you can read person this way.
Unknown said…
I agree that it shapes you because in a way body language is you, the real you. Without words, which are usually carefully selected....
Unknown said…
I agree with you, that body language is very helpful when you want to be successful. You should know how to behave yourself with different important partners in business and so on.

I was going to mention this TV show:P I was qiute upset that they didn't create more episodes. Situations in the show are definately exaggerated but I agree that a lot of it is ture...

I totaly agree with you, body language is very important in daily life.

I was thinking about DYNAMO :)

Thank you Svitlana for the article. I think I will use some of these advices.
P.S. I love „Though of the day” at the beginning of the website :)

I think it is possible to understand person by gestures and movement. It is not difficult to recognise someone's emotional state with obvious behaviours e.g. when someone is wriggling or does not want to maintain eye contact. But I think there are only a small group of people who can precisely analyse subtle muscle movements and face mimics.

When it comes to me, in some kind of awkward situations I look like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mng516txzYE =D

Reference to your first question that do I believe that it is possible to understand a man by his gestures I think yes it’s possible but it isn’t a rule. Many people during moving don’t think about what they want to show and their movements becomes action of subconsciousness. Some gestures are generalized to worldwide and popular symbols for easier communications between people, but we should to know that’s only kind of generalization, stereotype.
For example for me it’s not hard to keep my gestures under control if I’m not under pressure or I’m not stressed. But if I turn off my mind I don’t control my gestures or control less and I don’t think about what I want to show.
For me irritating is blinking too much, because then I see that my interlocutor is stressed or anxious. It’s not comfortable situation, because I feel not good when I see that the other person feel uncomfortable spending time or discuss with me.
Of course, body language is very important in communication; it's called 'language' for a reason! :) However, some people tend to overrate or wrongly read the signals other people give. Just like you stated: crossed arms can mean defending yourself, but maybe your cold and want to warm yourself up, or you're just comfortable this way, or... There are hundreds of explanations and you need to be really good at reading other people's signs to know what they really mean. Besides, there are lots and lots of popular myths considering body language, like 'blinking means lying' - some people take them too seriously and draw wrong conclusions.

Personally, I'm very sceptical about tricks like girls mentioned in the comments, about knowing one's pin code from just looking at them. You would need some high-tech equipment to do this, in my opinion.

However, the topic surely is interesting, especially if you're a business person or a lecturer - it's not only useful to know how to read body signals, but also how to show them to achieve good effects :)
Unknown said…
Reading people basing on their body language is possible. I think that generally is very intuitive, like you feel that someone feels awkward or that they don't particularly enjoy your company. But sometimes it may be done knowingly, analysed and used afterwards (e.g. when lawyers do their tricks to expose you - yeah, no more dramatic American series for me...). And if we are talking about understanding someone just basing on their body language - I'd say yes to that as well. It is not uncommon that you know the intentions of your interlocutor before they actually speak. You can get it from their posture, gestures, face. And even if you don't see someone's face (because you watch someone from the distance), you can still tell some of the general emotions that they have.

When I know about a body gesture that happens beyond my "decision", I try to tell myself that I can control it. I tend to cross my arms and legs in a "deffensive/uncomfortable" pose, but since I know what it means, I try to stop myself from doing that - not to send some bad signals to the people I'm talking to.

The other thing is that I wear glasses and I have been wearing them for about 15 years now. When they slide down my nose, I push them back in place. Some time ago I decided to get myself some contact lenses and I kept catching myself on pushing my imaginary glasses up. At first I thought that it was a normal habit because I was so used to glasses, but then I associated it with feeling uncomfortable and awkward, like when I couldn't come up with what to say. In such situations I would adjust my "glasses" just to do something with my hands! It was an interesting discovery. As the matter of fact, discovering anything your body does beyond your mind's control is pretty weird, don't you think?
Unknown said…
Do you really think that you do everything under full control of your body? Recently I've read a very interesting book called "The Power of Habit" (Charles Duhigg) and there was a part about controlling human's movements. It was saying that some gestures, when repeated many times, turn into reflexes not to occupy your brair. For example, when you tie your shoes, you don't really think and choose on which knee are you going to go down on first or something - and it all happens just because we've developed these reflexes. Don't you think that sometimes you just don't control your gestures because they've already turned into reflexes - like opening your eyes widely when seing something surprising or crossing youe legs when you sit down?

I've recently seen a scene in the show "Grey's Anatomy", where a surgeon was standing in a "Superman pose". When asked, she explained that standing in this specific pose may increase your self confidence and it is scientifically proven that this excercise increase a success rate in many undertakings - like job interviews, presentations, etc. I know that this was just a TV show, but I find this idea pretty interesting. Do you think that this kind of "auto body language" really works?

I believe it is possible to understand a man by his gestures or movements when he shares the same culture. It's more difficult if we go abroad, especially to some distant parts of the world.

I think I can keep my gestures under control when I focus on them. The situation changes when I get distracted and when the focus changes to some other thing. Then what my body does is all automatic.

For me body language is very important and recently I could see the difference in difficulty of conversation via teleconferences. No body language means you have to learn how to get all information and 'feel' other people just by their tone of voice :)
I think that If you can read body language you can learn a lot more about other person, because people share more information by non-verbal form of communication than verbal. Most of politics and public figures try to control their body language and by doing it they are trying to create appointed views of themselves and thanks to that they can manipulate others people. But not everything in our body language can be controlled for example there is something called micro expression and even if you are good in controlling of your body micro expression can reveal your hidden intention, because you cannot control it. Here you can find interesting documentary about body language and micro expression.

If you want to learn something more about body language I would recommend Alan Pease "Body Language - How To Read Others Thoughts By Their Gestures", you can find there a lot useful information about decoding body language in different situations. Here you can read it. You can also read his other books about psychology.
I think that language is a very important way of communication. I can see it especially when writing to someone on chat or via e-mail. There is no way to pass your body language this way and it may lead to misunderstandings - someone may find your statements offensive when not intended for example. It is also much easier to lie to a person this way.

However, it is not a good idea to try to use body language on a conscious level after reading an article or reading a short article. There are people who try to detect lying for example after watching a video. It may lead to a lot of false accusations. Body language depends not only on the culture, but also on physical and emotional state of the person. It is hard to smile when you are very sad or in pain. It may have nothing to do with the conversation.

On the other hand, trying too hard to use some gestures may lead to irritating exaggeration.

It is based on the book? I had no idea:P Is it under the same title?

Yes I've noticed that it is from it and I was supposed to metion this series but paulina was faster:P

Nice example, I think it can really work...If you show that you can be open and confident by your body languagne after a while you become like this, step by step...Do you agree with it?

In what situations you take advantage from being aware of body language?

Do you believe that it is possible to understand a man by his gestures and movements?

Unless he quotes Shakespeare I'll probably get the meaning.

Is it hard for you to keep your gestures under control?

Until I don't think about my gestures It's easy peasy, problems arise when I get nervous.

Do you have some specific movements or gestures that are irritating you?

No, not really.
Unknown said…
Agreed. Body language can really change what others think about you, especially when meeting new people and on job interviews when you're being observed very carefully. If you want to be successful you need to show your confidence.
Unknown said…
I agree about the gestures, their meaning can change drastically when you travel and it's good to learn about this in advance. There a lot of articles talking about this issue. I've recently saw a nice infographic showing a few examples: http://www.thecultureist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/global-guide-to-hand-gestures.jpg

Haha)) funny video, I think I look the same)

I agree with you girls, very nice example, thanks Paulina!

Dominika I love them too, there are interesting ones evry time)

It is under the same title. I'm not sure it is based on book or not, I think the book was published after the series just to earn more money :D
Cause the book cover's image was from the series and there are a lot of examples from the series, just more detailed)

I believe that it is possible to understand the other person who performs the gestures during a conversation. Non-verbal communication carries a lot of useful information. Often people who are familiar with each other can communicate only through gestures.
The interpretation of gestures can be problematic. Especially if you're talking to someone for the first time. Specific gestures can mean something completely different in different situations, or don'o't mean anything. Wrong interpretation of non-verbal communication can lead to misunderstandings.

Personally, I have no problems with controlling my gestures. But certainly there have been situations where I was not even aware that I was doing annoying gestures :)

Sometimes it is annoying to me when I am talking to a person who chews gum or holding his hands in pocket, but it depends on situation.

I agree with you, that most of politics try to controle themselves, it's really important in their job, cause everything depens on their behavior in public and of course while meetings.

Thanks for the recommendation, I've herad about this book a lot and even read it. So, I can recommend it to the others too :)
Unknown said…
Definitely agree with you about same culture, I forgot to mention this in my presentation, but it's really important, cause different cultures have their own basic behavior.

Katarzyna thanks for interesting infographic!

Very interesting discover, I've had such habits too, but I cannot remember now, maybe something connected with bags, cause I didn;t know where to put my hands when I am without any bag.

Amy Cuddy talk was very inspirating. Thanks to it I realized that I practice power poses on meetups in work or in home in daily conversations. It exerts a stron impact on our confidence and raise self-esteem. It helped me many times! So everyone should try it! I found out a lot of inspirational talks on TED(Youtube channel), so I spent my whole Saturday afternoon on watching them.
Unknown said…
This is the essence, that a person doesn't think about what they want to show or express by gestures, cause then you can see the truth, you can mention some small details, that can say you a lot about this person.

Unknown said…
Thank you :)
Yeah, I agree with you that there are also a lot of myths about body language and some people can wrong or just seriously comprehend some gestures. This can lead to confusion.
Unknown said…
I totaly agree with you that it is not enough just to watch some videos or to read some articles to start analizing someone's behavior. It requires additional studying such kind of science. Because you can understand a person wrong and then it can lead to the unpleasant situation.
Unknown said…
I'm glad you found it intersting :)

I think that it is possible to understand a man by his gestures and movements otherwise body language will not exist. particularly easy to see the body language when people are emotional. They quickly react to uncomfortable situations for example when they are embarrassed, scared, nervous or intimidated. It also happens to people who are thought to be confident, bold. some situations are very unpredictable and it is really difficult to abstain from the react. Everyone has moments when something increases blood preassures and it’s hard to not react. Body language is caused by extremely good as well as bad emotions.
I've read the book "Lie to me" and watched the serial based on this book.
In my opinnion body language is the true and some phycologists proved it.
Claver man would lern basic gestures, their meaning and use it in life
to understend people better, specially in some importent situations.
For instance during interview u can use such skills to gat a job.
I teached myself to keep my gestures under control to be protected.
Some times i can't control my food. It beating different music beats alot of
people hate it. On the other hand i dont like people show their authority using
gestures by eyes. Its called microexpressions.

I have seen that video before and it really has impressed me. I personally think, that body language is extremely important, and as I heard soo many times before – when we speak 30% of impression is WHAT we actually say, and 70% is about our body language. The funny fact I have read recently was quite interesting :) It was about seeing people being interested to each other. When you start to observing group of people, you might even not know, after few minutes you will clearly realise who is into whom, who is friended and so one. You don't really to hear anything, you can say it only by observing their behaviour. Since I have read this I was kinda trying in the real world, during parties with new group of people, and god it is so true! You can say so much about someones relationship when you observe how people are looking at each other and so on :) I know that I touched quite specific aspect, but in my opinion it is a pith and marrow of weightiness of body language :))
Unknown said…
I think that’s possible. I think the body language is very important in our communication, but I also thing this could be disastrous. Everyone is other so we can’t understand everyone. It’s simple. Everything is very relative. Unfortunatelly relative. I don’t like this word. I think it’s very hard for me to keep my gestures under control. I do many things mechanically, so it’s totally under control. Oh, I have many that’s movements and gestures: scratching, nail biting, strange faces, etc.
I’ve heard that businessmen learn special body code, which can help them to do better business. In my opinion it’s very poor. They manipulate their customer.
Michal Kulesza said…
Body language is really important communication factor but don't you think that is getting more and more marginalized? We are communicating throught text and voice chats and we are loosing this important factor. Working remotely I learned to 'read' people emotions and sometimes to detect lies through some other factors: like voice modulation and tone, speed of their speech etc.

Do you think that in 5, 10 or 20 years we will forget about body language?

On the other hand when traveling abroad body language and hand gestures can help to communicate if we don't know the language of foreigners.
Julia Osiak said…
Body language is very powerful. As Natalia mentioned it conveys more than the actual words spoken out loud. Looking closely at people, their gestures and reactions we can really learn much more than from mere listening. Not everyone is aware of the signal that they are sending through their body language so it is a very interesting experience to open your eyes wider and take in this new information. I know that I'm not good with controlling my gestures, especially in stressful situations and I've been planning to work on that. Hopefully someday I'll be in better control of my body language.
In my opinion body language is very important, both in everyday life and business/work situations.
Such things as good posture or keeping a confident eye contact can make a huge difference as to how other people perceive us.
Body language is one of the main factors that contribute to a first impression of someone, for example, it may be a crucial component to a successful job interview (of course skills and knowledge aside).
Usually you can easily tell apart a shy person from a confident one.
Also, I think you can and you should work on your body language, especially if you are aware of your bad habits (or if you want to present yourself in a more confident/relaxed way).

As to reading people intentions based on their body language - I think it's possible, but as others have mentioned one person's gesture may mean something totally different from another.
Having said that, I think that if you know someone (even for a short time) you can successfully read their body language and meaning behind it, although I think it's very subtle and situational.

In the era of Facebook, WhatsApp and other text messaging and communication services in era when most of communication between people (even if they are a family) is happening via digital means (from SMS to video chats and conferences) we start to forget how to speak with others not to mention the body language. Most of our contact with it is via watching in TV this few individuals trained in this ancient art. I mean politics and some other public figures. The way they speak and how they move is sometimes very different then what we're used to in our day to day small talk. By simple gestures statements are emphasized and aura of authority is built. In contrast to that most of common people who hasn't been trained in body language is able just to read it because it's based in our nature and subconsciousness but they can't consciously create body language acts of themselves. I think it's a shame and everybody should learn how to read and use it.
Unknown said…
Of course, it is possible to understand a human gestures. Some people are like "open books", their emotions, feelings cannot be hidden and they can't control body moves. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it may be domain of girls, boys are more reserved. Some other people can make poker face in every situation. I really wish I was that person, especially when I'm stressed - stressful situations changes my moves and I can't control it.

I do believe that the body language is an important factor in communication. I believe that if I have some subconscious gestures that are visible when I'm in distress it would be very hard to control them. When it comes to others, I am quite irritated by people chewing gum with an open mouth. It's not a gesture or body language, it's more of a bad habit or lack of... brain? (yeah, it really annoys me)...
Mateusz Frycie said…
In order to fully understand a man by his body movements, one has to share cultural background with this person, as many gestures mean totally different things in various countries. Of course there are some universal body movements the meaning of which is the same all over the world. In stressful situations I sometimes have problems to keep my gestures under control. I do not know what to do with my hands or how to maintain the same facial expression.
Unknown said…
The body language is a really important way of expressing not only our current mood, but also generally the character. It can really say a lot about the person so I'm pretty glad that people pay more attention on that topic (however I think that this field is still pretty much unappreciated by the majority). I always pay attention at the way I sit, the way I hold my hands etc. - it's kind of my obsession. I don't really like to express my feeling, I like to always look calm, so I really do pay attention at my gestures and movements, but I still find it really hard in for example stressful situations - my body is agaist me then and it's not always possible to control it. However I'm really into learning 'body language', it's really cool to know how to behave to be perceived in the way that we want to be. Nowadays it's particulary significant to know how to present ourselves and forming proper manners and gestures will surely pay off.

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and natura...

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds...
