Week 1 (09-15.03) VOD

Do you watch TV series? I do. Surprisingly I almost never watch them on TV. I watch them online, sometimes on YouTube or Dailymotion.

Recently I've discovered a whole new world of possibility to keep up with my favorites. I'm talking about online streaming, specifically about hulu (hulu.com) which can be used for free. The first problem one might encounter after clicking the link is the message: 'Sorry, currently our video library can only be watched within the United States' which is due to copyrights and all other legal stuff. How to solve such a problem? Move to US... or use a proxy (e.g. ZenMate) service to get public US IP address.

Such a system is called Video On Demand (VOD) and depending on the provider allows you to either download (useful if your connection is too slow for comfortable streaming) or stream the content.
http://www.thetvaddict.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/netflix.jpg
Most of the services are subscription-based (netflix.com, hbogo.com), some allow you to buy or rent movies (amazon.com) and some will provide you content if you are o.k. with watching some ADs (mentioned earlier hulu.com). With different pricing comes different qualities of streaming (from SD to ultra HD) and a different range of movies. From what I know the biggest database belongs to Amazon, but their subscription (Amazon Prime) is 99$/year which at first glance is a lot. On the other hand, Netflix, which has most of the TV series I watch starts from 8$/month. The industry is also present in Poland. VOD.pl, Google Play or iTunes offer a wide range of movies without the need of using proxy. Sadly, the foreign offer is simply better both in terms of pricing and the library's size.

Is this the way of the future? I mean, is the standard TV going extinct? Or it is just a matter of perception and the digital television taking over the analog one is the same as the internet television taking down the cable TV? Many modern TV screens (Smart TV?) have the internet connection so it seems only natural that at some point the television we used to know from our childhood will simply become a story of 'old times' that we may tell our children...

Do you often watch movies/TV series?
If so, on what platforms? Do you use VOD? Which provider?
If not, is VOD something more to your liking compared to normal TV?

I think the standard TV is going to stay for some time because it requires very small input from the user to actually watch something and it never breaks down. Comapring computer to a TV, for a "basic" user computer may be too hard to learn. For a TV all you need to do is switch it on and use the pilot to switch the channels.

Using computer just for watching TV is like using a car just to sit in one. You don't do just that because it's not the main purpose of this thing.

I don't often watch movies/series using TV. Most of the time if I watch, then I watch youtube's short amateur videos, documentaries, entertainment, scientific, etc... Companies set up their channels there and put the 'TV' term in their channel name often. It creates illusion as they would have set up their own television channel. A couple of years ago yes, I did watch TV, but I was slowly progressing towards using internet and other services more than TV. Eventually watching yourube completely displaced my TV habits for watching movies or series. From time to time, occasionally I watch a movie or series in a TV, but very rarely.

I do not use VOD because it is not free and sooner or later any media posted on the internet will make their way out to be free.

I believe that there is a difference in our watching preferences/habits that makes me like VOD more. I watch specific series that are only available on paid cable/satellite TV or via VOD. The second option is cheaper and allows more flexibility which is very important to me. If you mostly watch amateur video then YouTube is the perfect place for you :)

I don't even own a tv so I don't watch it at all. However I watch a lot of tv shows and programs. I also watch a lot of things on youtube (there are some really good programs/podcasts). Anyway I haven't felt a need to watch tv for years and even when I had one (when I was living with my parents) I didn't use it.

I don't use vod, because I feel that I can download everything that I want from the Internet in good quality and without any ads. Maybe if we would have Netflix in Poland perhaps I would consider paying for it. I love their show "House of Cards" and actually I'm in the middle of the new season. The huge difference between the internet and television is that I can choose what I want to watch and when I want it. Even when I'm in the mood to watch something silly to relax I would much rather watch something specific of my choosing then mindlessly serf through television channels (I never had cable so I wouldn't take long). I think that the Internet is much better than television, especially in Poland (at least here I know what kind of programs there are in tv). The Internet offers much better quality and I feel like deletion only invests their money into really stupid programs (like Dancing with the Stars and similar things) or buy foreign programs and airs the first season when everybody are watching the 4th one.

In my opinion people no longer have time or need to wait every week for their favorite programs at a specific hour especially when everything is available at any time you want.

I love to watch movies and TV series only at my PC. When I watching TV I have to wait for my favorite movie because a lot of time there are annoying advertisement. More over when I want to do something else I can't press pause to stop my movie.
I usually use websites such as watchseries or eKino. I don't need to watch in HD quality because I don’t mind quality that much. The only exception that I have is for TV shows which are on TVN.

Your presentation reminds me mine, from last term: http://konwersatorium1-ms-pjwstk.blogspot.com/2014/12/week-9-internet-television.html so I think it's hot topic ;)

Mine was more about generaly speaking 'Internet television' rather than VOD. I like that you focused on this branch. I was working for company serving biggest polish TV companies with VOD. Amount of people watching it - is crazy.

There is still one thing that is not regulated: in USA there are 1.7 bilion people using up to 10 ISPs (Internet Service Providers). In Europe - there are 500 milion people using several dozen ISPs.
If these companies wouldn't invest money in the infrastructure - Internet Televisions wouldn't exist. Now, most of the money paid for transfering data are not sufficient to improve the infrastructure and I'm not suprised that ISPs want TV companies to pay them for eg. better transfer - and it's happening even in Poland.
For example: Google has to pay UPC to transfer Youtube content faster.

I've read an article where it was written that law has to be changed to unify the market of internet television and internet providers so it would be obligatory to share their incomes.
What do you think about this idea? Wouldn't it kill the Internet freedom? So for example if you would use 1 ISP you can watch youtube and with another you can't but you have access to Netflix (and price is covered by your Internet bill).

I really like watching tv shows on my PC. I can easily download a whole season of my favourite show and watch 5 or 6 episodes a day, without waiting a week for another episode. Online streaming applications makes it really easy. Applications like that also allows you to find similar shows, so you don't need to worry if your favourite show ends.
I would be really interested in using hulu or netflix, unfortunately all those copyright laws, that doesn't allow to watch movies in Poland, makes it impossible.

In my opinion a lot of people don't have time to watch television so they watch TV series on internet in free time. It's better way because they don't have to watch TV commercials. For example, if you watch the movie on Polsat the ads are longer than the film itself.

One of disadvantages is that the series are published later than the television. And often the newest are paid.
I really like to watch TV shows. The problem is that I'm usually interested in only one or two shows at any given time. Most of other stuff on TV is just boring for me.
That's why VOD seems to be a very good option for me. I already wanted to give it a shoot last year with HBO GO. Unfortunately it's impossible to subscribe to HBO GO on its own, it's just an addon (costing 10 PLN extra) to regular HBO subscription and I could buy it only from a TV provider. I would gladly pay even 30 or 40 PLN for this service standalone. It was a real deal breaker for me since I don't have a regular TV subscription (for the reasons I mentioned before). Most of people in Poland don't even know that you actually can set up a proxy and use Netflix and other amazing VOD services available in the US.
Maybe HBO's policy originates from their wrong assumption that everyone interested in TV shows already has traditional TV but in my opinion it's just their way to force people to buy even the cheapest subscription to their traditional channels which are bound to lose to a superior medium which is the Internet.
What do you think?
Exactly! The commercials not only waste your time but also knock you out of immersion to the show you are watching. Imagine you are experiencing a very exciting moment in a movie and then all of the sudden... a Media Expert commercial.

I know that it might seems weird, but I don't like to watch anything (except snowboard movies :D). I don't like movies, I don't fancy watching series (except some classics like "how I met your mother" or Gossip girl haha). I simply don't have time to do so. I mean you need lots of time in a row for watching a movie - 2 hour minimum :/ And with the series it is 20 or 40 minutes, but come on, who watches one episode only? When I watch series I watch it aaaalll the time :D I never start when the whole season is not out, but when it is I spend few days to watch everything, because I get so gripped into it :P
But I think VOD is really cool option to reduce piracy in internet. It is quite unnatural to go to the shop if you want to watch something – you want it NOW, you don't think about going out anywhere. Many series are not even available in our stores when they are hot in Poland. So this kind of is very convenient – and it's quite similar to TV, except the fact that you watch what you want whenever you want :) cool stuff

I'm totally busy so I don't watch TV at all, including any of the TV series. Besides that I think that watching them online is much more comfortable, as we don't have to adjust to the displaying hours but simply choose the right timing. Someone above said that it also lets us avoid the advertisements - I can't agree with that statement, the advertisers have already detected the power of the Internet so even here we've got them, so long they're fortunately much shorter than the ones in the TV. Anyway, I still can't understand the latest popularity of the TV series, it's a complete waste of time, I'd rather do something useful instead of mindless looking at the screen for hours (as it's not posibble to finish watching after just one episode, is it? :) ).

I don't think I watch movies or TV series often but I do. And if I do then I'll wacth it only on the Internet, cause I don't have TV(student :)). I've never heard about VOD before, but thanks you, now I know anout this pretty interesting opportunity to watch favourite movies or series online. There are many different platforms in Ukraine, so I prefer watch everything I want there.
I stopped watching TV a long time ago, because in my opinion it's only waste of time and money. Most of the TV programs are really boring and almost the same, especially in polish TV and even if you want to watch some movie with duration around 100 min you must spent twice as much time to watch it, because TV stations want to also earn money on adverts. Also on TV you can watch movie/program only on designated by TV station emission time which is also really big disadvantage of television. To watch something I rather prefer to use Internet, because I can watch anything at anytime.

From TV series I really like two of them: arrow and supernatural.

Well, what you're pointing at is a great strength of VOD - the purpose to serve content according to the demand. What you mentioned in the end of your 2nd paragraph is something that also results from the demand. A demographic TV watcher really likes his 'Gwiazdy tańczą...' or 'Ojciec Mateusz'. Somehow I can't imagine a typical pole watching 'Breaking Bad', simply because they can't relate (or can they? lol).
rf. said…
Yeah, the possibility to pause is really great. Isn't nc+ (TV provider) allowing just that (and it also provides VOD)? It's more expensive than monthly VOD subscription but it's available without the internet connection.

I don't watch television anymore. The exception are the most essential tv programs like the News. From time to time I might watch it with friends when there is something really interesting or simply out of boredom. But for the rest I prefer the Internet and video sharing platforms like Youtube. This is where I watch my tv series and interesting podcasts. It's just comfortable enough for me so I don't need to use any VOD platform. Most of the shows I'm interested in are free and I can watch them whenever I please and e.g. I don't have to wait a whole week for a new show. Some of the series' episodes I follow can be found on the offical pages, so the access is easy. And when it comes to movies, I prefer to watch them in cinema.

Yeah, I've remembered that there was something on the topic, but I've searched for 'VOD' and couldn't relate... guess you've looked at the subject in a wider spectrum.
What you're saying about deals between content service providers and ISPs is astonishing... and after a while seems kinda reasonable. At least for Poland - I mean... this a country of better deals and hard competition, guess it's hard to be surprised by anything if you're in Poland :)
rf. said…
If you read some news on the topic you can see that VOD providers from US are aware of people using their services from abroad (using proxy for example) and they won't do anything about it... simply 'cause that would be only harming their income. It's also interesting then how 'downloading the whole season' is less illegal than using hulu...

I totally agree with what you said. Also if you look at the problem from the HBO perspective... such a policy is great for maximizing their profits. Is winter coming by any chance? :)
rf. said…
I'm confused. How many series do you (did you) watch? You claimed that you don't watch too often, but then again you describe this 'watching series in one go' phenomena... it might lead to thinking, that you're more into the movies than you'd like to admit you are... ^^
rf. said…
I'd like to disagree. Sometimes I pause int the middle of a movie to finish some important stuff and get back to watching it in the evening or maybe even another day.
Aaaand sometimes one episode is just not enough and I can deal with one less hour of sleep. Haha.
rf. said…
That's interesting. What language are the series in on this platforms? Do you have subtitles? Or is the pricing more to your liking? :)

Have you been to imax? It's really good if you prefer cinemas for movies.
Like most of the people say, I also think television in its current form will extinct in the near future. Right now you pay for the programs you don't want to watch at all - even if you have personalized set of channels, you always end up having dozens of channels you don't ever watch. I definately prefer watching TV series and movies online - however, if I found a good VOD system with reasonable prices and terms in Poland, I'd gladly pay for hi-quality TV series and movies - I think the producers and directors deserve to have money for what they do.
rf. said…
That's a great posture. If you want quality and big offer Amazon seems the correct choice, though if you're more into TV series rather than movies Netflix may be preferable. Oh, and Hollywood ain't going bankrupt anytime soon :)

Since I've moved out from my family house, I've got no TV in my flat so honestly saying, TV is already dead for me. I find all these TV shows totally stupid, the movies are divided into milions of parts by the advertisements so it's not possible to watch it at once, until you've got couple of hours to waste. I was totally against that kind of spending spare time until I've accidentally watched one episode of 'Friends' with my girlfriend. She's a total TV series' freak, which was always a reason to make fun of her, and now I'm the one who spends every free minute watching another episode. Anyway, I'm still not a huge fan of TV, and this one exception just let me look more indulgently at TV maniacs. However, I'm really keen on going to the cinemas, but not the popular ones, just this with low-budget/one-reel movies. The discussions that are taking place after the projections always make it worth watching.

I don't have much time to watch movies or tv shows, so when I finally do find some I want to watch exactly what's on my waiting list. That's why I don't really watch normal TV any more. If Netflix or Hulu were available in Poland, I'm sure I would use them to catch up with movies and various shows.

That's a nice experience to share with us :) and be cautious with taking up new series - there will be many more you're going to like so keep your timetable in check ;)

I turn on TV once for a few months. I don't like TV's content from TV shows to poorly chosen movies, I don't want to waste my time on watching commercials, I also don't use any VOD service at the moment, but I used Netflix in the past and I am grateful for their great work. I love House of Cards which is their own series.

I won't subscribe to any VOD in near future because now my hosting plan is much more important than entertainment.

Did you use Netflix from within Poland?

In the past I couldn't imagine flat without regular TV subscription, living without television was insane. Nowadays I don't need typical subscription for TV because my TV is used like a bigger screen to watch films. My dreamed subscription would be one when I could have a possibility to choose only few TV channels that I'm interested in. I regret to say, most of movies or TV series I watch, I download from the Internet. Sometimes I use Amazon Instant Video platform or Netflix via US proxy.

I don't have time to watch TV on a regular basis and what's more I really hate the translation of the majority of the TV series. The jokes are far better in original than in the Polish language version. That's why I usually watch my favourite TV series on the Internet using international platforms.

If you download movies from hosting, not via torrent (so u don't host/share them yourself) it's not illegal... :)

Yeah, basically most of the art (like movies) is better in the original language. There are some exceptions like Madagascar (it's awesome in all languages actually):
MUST SEE

I don't watch regular TV. When I'll find some free time I usually watch a movie or an episode or two of some of my favourite series (e.g. Arrow, Gotham, House of Cards...). I already used hulu and I really liked it. The quality of the video is good and there is no problem with the streaming. I can safely recommend it :)

I watch television rarely, because most of the content is not interesting for me. What is more adds are really frustrating to me. That’s why I chose YouTube. There is a bunch of scientific channels with a great stuff e.g. SciShow, Numberphile, Periodic Videos or Vsauce. Some time ago I found channel with all(or almost all) series of Sonda. It’s really charming watching technological programme from ‘70 and ’80.

Usually it's original version or a version translated to russian or ukrainian. Yeah, there are subtitles as well, so it's pretty cool while learning other language.

I stopped watching normal TV about 2 years ago. I need TV only to watch sporting events. Currently I don't have much time to watch TV series, but when I find some free time I watch my favourite TV series like 'The Big Bang Theory' or 'Better Call Saul' on the Internet.
The use of normal TV is not very comfortable because of schedule and commercials. VOD is more flexible. Video On Demand allows us to see what we want and when we want.
As for me i don’t watch TV too much and prefer to use the lap top for watching serials and movies. Using online services for it is not good idea, my best software is one program which looking for all torrents in the internet with name of series, movie or film I want. You just need to enter the title and download it. The quality of files is seen in information. Actually it’s better for me to download file and use it later whatever I want even without internet for example in the train. I always watch films in nice quality what you would never find online.

I used Hulu and Netflix few years ago during visit in US. After that I missed it a lot here in Poland. I searched for some proxy service but most of them are expensive or poor quality. For sure I'll check out ZenMate recommended by you.

I love watching TV series at my laptop. I am addictet to House of Cards and Better Call Saul. I can watch HoC all day and all night, when I have enough time of course :) Formerly I spent free time watching True Detective and Braking Bad. It gets to be addective. I usually use netflix.com it is my favourite service. There are a lot of fantastic movies and Tv series. In my opinion normal Tv is good but people prefer to watch their tv series when they want it and when they have time for this pleasure. I think that people are used to watch their favourite news broadcast at specified time. I can say that this is their habit but on the other hand internet television will displace normal Tv.

Week 11 [03-09.06.2019] The problem with ecological cars emission in UK

The problem with ecological cars emission in UK Since the adoption of the European Emission Allowance Directive in the European Parliament, all car makers have tried to submit. Since 1992, the Euro I standard has been in force, which limited the emission of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. The Euro VI standard currently applies, which limits the series of exhaust gases. These include: hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides, and dust.   The most significant change was brought by the Euro IV standard. For the first time it introduced the limitation of nitrogen oxides, which are responsible for the harmful compounds of smog.   What is smog?   Smog consists of sulfur oxides, nitrogen and carbon. In addition, solid substances such as suspended dust (PM). Dust suspend in atmospheric aerosols may be in liquid and solid form. These can be particles of sea salt, clouds from the Sahara and artificial compounds made by people. These compounds often come fr

Week 12 (12.01-18.01.15) Are you an early bird or a night owl ?

Owls are nocturnal creatures. They’re wide awake at night and they sleep during the day. If this sounds like bliss to you, then, like about 20 percent of the population who find themselves most active at around 9 pm, you may fall into the same category as our feathered friend. Night owls often have difficulty waking up in the morning, and like to be up late at night.  Studies of animal behaviour indicate that being a night owl may actually be built into some people’s genes. This would explain why those late-to-bed, late-to-rise people find it so difficult to change their behaviour. The trouble for night owls is that they just have to be at places such as work and school far too early. This is when the alarm clock becomes the night owl’s most important survival tool. Experts say that one way for a night owl to beat their dependence on their alarm clocks is to sleep with the curtains open. The Theory is that if they do so, the morning sunlight will awaken them gently and naturally.
